Shaggy Rogers

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Shaggy Rogers with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Scooby-Doo

Shaggy Rogers is the main human protagonist in the Scooby-Doo Franchise. He is best friends with his pet Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. Tall and lanky in appearance, Shaggy scares very easily and usually wants nothing to do with attempting to solve the different mysteries the gang find themselves getting into. He has an enormous appetite that is seems to be never satisfied. His trademark line is 'Zoinks' and he usually refers to Scooby-Doo as 'Scoob'. He is usually, along with Scoob, portrayed as the 'comic relief' for the shows. Shaggy has been entertaining audiences for more than 40 years. Casey Kasem voiced him for all television series from 1970-2009 except for when Scott Menville took the role for the show "Shaggy & Scooby-Doo: Get a Clue!" When Casey Kasem retired in 2009 Matthew Lillard inherited the role. As we all know there have been dozens of direct-to-vhs or dvd movies based on the Scooby franchise. For these movies both Billy West and Scott Innes have voiced the forever hungry and scared Shaggy Rogers.

Defiantly Kasem for my top 40. The others are okay replacements, and Lillard holds the distinction of being Shaggy in multiple formats and getting a stern talking to Kasem's Shaggy in Looney Tunes Back in Action.

One thing I know for certain is that Duncan Robertson and the unnamed actor from "Scooby Doo and the Snowmen" are terrible. Which are both surprisingly absent from this page.

My opinions on Shaggy's voice actors:

5. Scott Menville - Yeeaaaahhh, I really have nothing to say here since other people have said it.

4. Matthew Lillard - I get he played Shaggy in the live action films but here it's too low pitched and he sounds more like a random surfer guy even though Shaggy isn't.

3. Billy West - I had NO idea Billy had played Shaggy in Zombie Island! Looking back he does a good job capturing the voice though it does sound recognisable in some places.

2. Scott Innes - Another great performance from this guy (not to mention my favourite Scooby voice)! Just like with Scooby he captured the personality right but also made it his own. In some ways he actually could be my favourite Shaggy voice, but of course there's one who still remains king in the role.

1. Casey Kasem - Shaggy just wouldn't be Shaggy without the iconic voice and the humour Casey gave him. For that reason alone I can't NOT vote for him.

1. Casey Kasem: He created Shaggy's iconic voice and set the precedent for the other actors to follow in that regard, and was dedicated to the role for many years, so for that, he's the best to me.
2. Scott Innes: Does a pretty spot on imitation of Casey Kasem, if not a bit higher pitched at times, but I couldn't even tell the difference as a boy.
3. Matthew Lillard: He's okay, but I feel he can get a bit stiff at times and lacks energy in his delivery.
4. Billy West: Sounds okay as well, but a bit low pitched and hoarse.
5. Scott Menville: Too high pitched and doesn't sound anything like Shaggy should, really.

1. Casey Kasem: Kasem is the most iconic one of these five men. His take will always be memorable and enjoyable.
2. Billy West: West does an admirable job as Shaggy, his imitation of Kasem is remarkable but there are traces of Fry and Doug in his voice.
3. Matthew Lillard: Lillard is a bit on the raspy side, but nevertheless he is fitting and a worthy successor.
4. Scott Innes: Innes is okay in official material but in things like "Harvey Birdman" he is way off.

Casey did set the slandered that everyone else afterwords would try to recapture, so it's a no brainier that I go with the man who created the voice.

Now I do find Matthew to be a very good replacement, sure he doesn't sound like Casey but he still captures the character very well. I can easily say he's my second favorite, mostly because he was able to do his own thing and still make it work.

Now for those who went for proper impressions, in terms of pitch and mannerisms I would say Scott INNES (not Menville) sounded the closest to Casey. He does faultier a little here and there but for sure telling the difference between him and Kasem would be tricky for those who didn't know their tells.

Last but not least is Billy West. He like Matthew went for more doing his own thing rather then trying to do a straight impression. Its a good performance, but may take some getting use to for some.

No comment on Scott Menville xD

Casey Kasem was Shaggy, he pretty much made Shaggy the character he was, I've always considered Shaggy to be his definitive best role. His voice just fits a hippie looking teen called Shaggy and it was pretty awesome that he had been voicing him up until 2009. RIP Casey Kasem you will be missed.

Of the replacement voices that succeeded Kasem I've always like Matthew Lillard the most. Sure he doesn't sound like a 100% spot on voice match but I feel he captures the spirit of Shaggy far better than anyone else here. I was never much of a fan of the live-action movies though the casting of Lillard was spot on. I can totally see why Casey picked Matthew to be the current voice of Shaggy. He homages Kasem but also makes Shaggy his own role which I think is important in the long run.

Scott Innes does a really great spot on impression, an easy third.

Billy West is decent but he sounds way too high pitch and kinda almost like Tom Kenny's Rabbit. O_O

Scott Menville was really miscast, the less said the better.

In the end I'm going with the late Casey Kasem on this one but I also really like Matthew Lillard in the role.

Casey Kasem is the most memorable, and pretty much a classic, though Scott Innes was the closest sound-alike to him to me, and was a pretty good substitute.

Billy West did a good job making Shaggy his own, though you can hear Fry at times, Matthew Lillard...I think he's OK, but he still sounds a bit stoned at times, and Scott Menville...well, he's miscast, easily the weakest of the group.

The ONE complaint I have about Matthew and Billy's performances is that they're a bit high-pitched, other than that, they're both pretty darn good (though Matthew is the better soundalike of the two).

1.Casey Kasem was the best Shaggy Rogers. His performance was timeless. It was also good that he got the chance to reprise the role in later years. While not as stellar as his earlier performance, it still holds up pretty well

2.Scott Innes. Does an almost flawless impersonation of Casey's Shaggy. His performances in the moives were great.

3. Billy West- Another good impression of Casey's Shaggy. The only issue with it which makes me put it lower on the list is that it slips out of the impression at times

4. Matthew Lillard. He was definitely the upside to the terrible live action movies of Scooby Doo. Not only that but it translates pretty well to the cartoon series as well.

5. Scott Menville. Right off the bat, he is awful.

Scott Innes did a near spot on imitation of Kasem while keeping the spirit of the character intact.

Casey Kasem is the best Shaggy Rogers, and it was his definitive role in my book: his voice perfectly matched the character, his acting was superb and he was just hilarious in the role as well as enjoyable throughout his run: R.I.P.

Honestly, my second favorite is Scott Innes: he does a pretty good imitation of Casey Kasem while also acting really well.

Matthew Lillard...honestly, I don't like his voice for Shaggy: I loved him in the live action movies, but here, it doesn't seem to fit as well...he's a little flat in pitch for me and dull sounding, though he does a decent job.

Billy West is okay, but sounds a little off to me compared to the other three.

Scott Menville is clearly the worst here and the voice doesn't fit the character at all.

1-:Casey Kasem: This is his defining role, and he nailed Shaggy's personality, defining what the character's voice should sound like.
2-:Mathew Lillard: You can tell he sounds slightly younger, but he's definitely the most worthy successor to Casey. Best casting in the live action films, hands down, and it reflects well enough in animated form :)
3-: Billy West: Almost as good, if not better than Matt. I have a hard time placing him. His voice for the character is slightly inconsistent, but if he had been given another chance after Zombie Island, I think he would of more naturally grew into it. Overall, a satisfying performance that I have little to no qualms with, as the first successor to Casey.
4-: Scott Innes: I never had a problem with how he delivered his lines, he got the mannerisms and speaking tone down fine. I just don't think his voice is really a good fit, it's too scratchy and deep to work.
5-: Scott Menville: It's fine if you want to make the role sound more unique this time around, and I'm sure direction plays a part in it, but did Shaggy really have to sound so high pitched and grating in this show?
said at 7:59 AM on Sun Oct 5 2014
@chaosincarnate Billy West did an audition for Shaggy after Casey retired but he lost the role to Matthew Lillard.
said at 9:28 PM on Sun Apr 6 2014
Really, Kasem needs to be on this list twice, because his second, 21st century tenure as Shaggy was not good. His age was clearly going against him, and the character sounded tired and forced. Pre-90s Kasem will always be the best, but I've developed a soft spot for West's portrayal in recent years. It's far superior to Innes', but I know I'm in a minority.
said at 5:53 PM on Fri Jan 3 2014
Guys, when you think (and listen) about it, Kasem and his voice acting imitators, they all have a very southern take on the character, which I find enjoyable, but what I find even more enjoyable and pleasing to the ear is Matthew Lillard's shaggy!!! It suits the goofball character! I know Casey Kasem's the original and he created the voice and all, but that's not the point of the Voice Compare, the point is the best voice and sound.

Matthew came back from the films which is normally a good sign. It is also noted that he will continue 2 voice Shaggy for a while.

Of course Casey Kasem is the classic and best, and Scott Innes would have to be my second favorite--he nails the mannerisms that Casey gave Shaggy like it's nothing. I really wanted to comment most on Billy West's voice here, though. It's been a while since I last watched a Scooby production with Billy West as Shaggy, but if the clip here is good enough to go by, he seems to slip into his Fry voice really easily.

Shaggy was the most unique set of voice actors who portrayed him, all that fit the role in some special way.

If I was to make an order, it would be:

I guess if I had to pick an order it would be:

1) Casey Kasem - As the originating voice actor, Casey will always be the definitive Shaggy. His voice for the character is unique, and really captured Shaggy's comedic and beatnik personality.

2) Scott Innes - An absolute astounding substitute for Kasem. He captured everything about the character that made him great and recognizable.

3) Matthew Lillard - It's interesting seeing a live-action portrayer of a character return to voice the animated counterpart. Lillard suits the realistic Shaggy, while still interpreting a younger, more teenage Shaggy perfectly.

4) Billy West - Although he wasn't a perfect match, he still managed to get into character and provide a suitable voice.

5) Scott Menville - Just simply no. He sounded way too forced and completely out of character. He didn't capture any former personality aspect of Shaggy like the other voice actors did.

Casey Kasem - Yeah, he's great. A true classic and legend. my only problem is that in later work, I had a hard time buying that voice coming out of a teenager.
Matthew Lillard - He's a bit different, but he uses a voice and I can believe is coming out of a teen. I like him.
Scott Innes - Good replacement, his voice was a little grating for me at times though.
Billy West - Did an adequate job, don't think he can do the voice convincingly anymore.
Scott Menville - Remember guys, this is not supposed to be the classic Shaggy, and they weren't going to make him a permanent replacement. He was just for this show. But even keeping that in mind, he still sucks.

Casey Kasem IS Shaggy, Scott Innes is the runner up and Billy West comes in third.

I haven't heard much of Matthew Lillard at all and I hardly remember the movies... except that they were awful. He doesn't sound great here, but it's interesting that the live action actor of an established cartoon character went on to voice the character officially.

However, I bet he's improved in the last three years and if I catch some of his recent work I will update this comment.

said at 3:22 PM on Wed May 15 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy Evidently Matt is the most popular of the voices. His performance was highly praised by critics in the live-action films and when Casey retired fans had to vote on which actor reprised the role and fans chose Matt which Scott being a close 2nd. I'm not crazy about that decision either but that's the way it works.
said at 10:54 AM on Thu May 16 2013
@pete He's probably a little better than I give him credit for, but what I've heard from him so far doesn't have nearly as much life and charm as I'd expect from Shaggy. As far as making Shaggy sound more like a teenage, I think Billy West did that pretty well without making him sound boring.

I don't know, maybe once I actually sit through a full film with him voicing Shaggy I'll feel differently, but I can't remember a direct to video Scooby-Doo movie that was really worth watching other than Zombie Island. So, I'm not all that excited to watch the ones with Mathew Lillard because I think the writing in the movies' themselves are stale and rushed. -_-
said at 3:17 PM on Thu May 16 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy He's older in Zombie Island like college to mid 20's and Witches Ghost and Camp Scare and Big Top are the best ones Lillard made so far.

@pete Thanks. If I ever get around to watching any of the new Scooby movies I'll check those out.
said at 12:28 AM on Fri May 17 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy I meant to say I think Witches Ghost is on par with Zombie Island though lacking a few aspects. As far as Lillard's movies goes the first was nothing really special. Abracadabra Doo was a bit boring to me, Music Of The Vampire is terrible except for the opening song. I don't think the signing was a good idea for the whole movie. Legend Of The Phantosaur I don't remember too much to have an opinion, and Mask Of The Blue Falcon is an enjoyable one if you like the concept of mystery at a comic convention combined with corny yet enjoyable humor. Lillard doesn't too bad in it though. Camp Scare and Big Top are best so far to me especially writing wise, I say Camp Scare is my favorite so far for its setting, concept, and and animation. Same reason I enjoyed Zombie Island and Witches Ghost. I recommend that one more than the others with Big Top close behind. Just thought I'd clarify.

 1 Shout Out!
1) Scott Innes - I pretty much grew up with Scott Innes' version, so his voice is the most recognizable for me.

2) Matthew Lillard - I'm a huge fan of Mystery Incorporated, and I feel that Lillard feels very natural in the role.

3) Billy West - Although shifting into "Fry" territory for a couple lines, much like Innes, I first got into Scooby-Doo through Zombie Island. To this day, I feel that Zombie Island is still the best Scooby-Doo film.

4) Casey Kasem - It is obvious he originated the role, but his EXTREMELY hoarse voice in What's New Scooby-Doo?, and his insistence that Shaggy MUST be vegetarian... Left a bitterness in my hear.

5) Scott Menville - Clip speaks for itself xD

1. Casey Kasem- obviously the original voice, but I didn't really like him as much until his work on the character in the 2000s, like he was really trying to win his character back instead of just coasting in his past actions.

2. Matthew Lillard - Honestly he was one of the only things the live action movies has going for them. He actually felt and sounded like Shaggy as opposed to the rest of the cast who just looked like there respective roles. His work on mystery Inc is pretty good as well, actually making the character feel like he's in high school, which sadly Frank, Grey, and Mindy tried to do, but couldn't do it as well.

3. Scott Innes - He was a good stand in for Casey, but his voice always sounded off to me, like he was trying to hard to sound nasally. He's not bad. Just not my Cup of Tea.

4. Billy West - He did fine, but he really just comes off as Fry doing a Shaggy impression.

5. Scott Menville - Yeah, it's not great, in fact it seems like they just got the first person to come in to replace Casey who tried out, since they wouldn't have Shaggy be vegetarian in get a clue so Casey passed. But yeah I'm glad they got casey back, then passed the torch to matt instead.

1. Casey Kasem-Obviously. He was the original and has portrayed him for over 40 years with no realy equal.
2. Scott Innes-A good replacement
3. Matthew Lillard-Makes a good young Shaggy
4. Billy West-Does a good job but is a bit too high pitched for me.
5. Scott Menville-A deffinate miss cast.

This one is a no-brainer
1. Casey Kasem - His voice is just too classic to pass up
2. Scott Innes - Suitable replacement
3. Billy West - Pretty good, but you can hear the Fry in his voice
4. Matthew Lillard - I have to say decent replacement, but he makes Shaggy sound like a smoker
5. Scott Menville - What the heck is this?!

Obviously, Casey Kasem was instantly iconic and perfect in the role, and he certainly got some of the longest sustained time periods to play around with it. But many of the other actors are quite good, although poor Scott Menville had the misfortune to be both miscast and in a crappy show.

I'm still not sure WHY they had Billy West and Scott Innes alternate on the first few DTV movies, especially since Casey came right back for What's New and the films in that continuity, but both are quite excellent in the role. If you're a nerd like me, you can tell it's Billy, but his impersonation is otherwise spot-on and the actual acting is great, as we should expect from Billy. Innes kind of dropped off the face of the Earth after being in those films, but he was rather good from an acting and impersonation perspective as well.

And then we have Matthew Lillard. I think he's actually grown into the role quite nicely, especially on Mystery, Incorporated. He and Linda Cardellini's Velma were the best things about the live-action Scooby films, so I'm honestly glad he got another crack at the character. He sounds a little younger, sure, but his acting and comic timing meshes quite well with the rest of the cast.

And come on, they cast Casey as his dad! That's just great.

@SpiderDreamer There was a brief period where Casey refused to voice the character after a fallout over a Burger King commercial (Kasem's an avid vegetarian), so Billy and Scott filled in. I'm not sure why Billy left the role, but I personally think Scott's voice is a slight improvement (though I couldn't tell the difference as a kid. I knew they were different from Casey, but I didn't know Shaggy's voice changed between Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost).

@PurpleWarrior13 Because Scott offered to do Shaggy, so they didn't need Billy. He was just Scooby in Zombie Island.

The new shows should've used Billy West instead of Matthew Lillard IMO.

@TheVengeanceKnight I think they should have used Scott Innes instead of Matthew Lillard for Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.

Casey . But Scott does a wonderful imitation of Casey! I would never be able to tell them apart! They are so extremely similar. West is ok, he is more recognizable and I can tell him apart from the others a bit.

Menville and Lillard sound really wrong to me. Lillard is more tolerable though

I guess if I had to pick an order it would be:

1. Kasem - He'll always be the definitive Shaggy. His voice for the character is unique, and really captured Shaggy's goofball personality.

2. Innes - A GREAT substitute for Kasem. He captured everything about the character that made him great.

3. West - While he wasn't a perfect match, he still managed to get into character and be a suitable voice for the character.

4. Lillard - Sounds a little stoned, but I guess he gets the job done. He's better as the realistic, more natural Shaggy in the live action movies.

5. Menville - Just... no. He sounded way too forced, and totally out of character and over-the-top. It's painful to listen to.
