Fred Jones

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Fred Jones with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Scooby-Doo

Fred is usually depicted as the leader of the Mystery Gang. The brave and athletic sportsman of the group and driver of the Mystery Machine, Fred Jones is basically the polar opposite of Shaggy Rogers. His trademark line is 'Let's Split up, Gang' or anything else that includes the word 'gang' as he doles out instructions to the rest of the group as they try to solve the latest mystery. He is usually looked at as the one in charge and the amateur sleuth of the group.

Regular Fred:

1. Frank Welker:

Arguably his most famous role, and for good reason, he's always made Fred sound like that everyday teenager who serves as a leader of his group.

2. Chris Cox:

Eh, he's a little too light and generic, really: nothing terrible, but he's just OK.

Child Fred:

1. Carl Stevens: He did a great job as kid Fred, RIP.

Frank: his first and one of his most memorable roles

1. Frank Welker: Welker's Fred was his very first voice role, and it's amazing how long he has stayed with the character even if you can tell Fred sounds a bit aged.
2. Chris Cox: A decent impression of Freddie Prinze, Jr.
3. Carl Stevens: Admirable voice, perfect for kid Fred.

1) Frank Welker - No Duh it's Frank. He IS Fred.

2) Chris Cox - He's trying to impersonate Fred from the live-action movies. Not the cartoons

3) Carl Stevens - There's no point including the kid because he's just playing as Fred when he was a kid.

Frank Welker. Not even close.

Frank Welker IS Fred. This was practically his first major role and the fact he continues to voice him to this day is nothing short of incredible. I'm still amazed that how well he can sound like a teen/young adult even as his begins his early seventies. That's awesome. I like how he's practically voiced Fred in all but two animated projects. I admire this level of devotion and dedication. Whenever he uses this voice for any other character all I hear is Fred, that can be a bit of a bad thing but it also shows how memorable he is as Fred.

Chris Cox is really good at voice matching Freddie Prinze, Jr. I kinda wonder if he'd be able to voice match Frank Welker when he inevitably steps down from Fred?

Carl Stevens is fine for a young Fred. Not much else to say.

This is Frank Welker's role! So for that he gets my vote.

Easily one of Frank's more iconic roles. And the fact that he's still voicing him is just astounding. My vote goes to him

Frank Welker has a really distinctive voice that really makes the character stand out, and he still does it well at almost 70. Chris was a good substitute for Freddie Prinze though. It's not fair to compare Carl to either of them since he played a very different version of the character.

Frank Welker is the best here, hands down, no comparison. It's one of his career defining roles(other than Megatron) and he's been doing it for 46 years. He is Fred Jones.
Carl Steven's is playing the kid version so he's at a slight disadvantage here. It's OK.
Chris Cox does a fairly good job, voice matching Freddie Prinze Jr in that game. So my ranking would have to be Frank in first, Chris in seconf & Carl at a distant third.

Don't really see how this is a fair comparison since Carl Stevens voiced the kid version of Fred...nevertheless, Frank Welker is classic, how can I not vote for him?

If Frank Welker were to retire from the role, I think Yuri Lowenthal or Jason Marsden should voice Fred.
said at 12:05 PM on Wed Jan 7 2015
@Bauglir100 Jason Marsden doesn't sound like him that much but he does have a very normal sounding voice, as opposed to an overly cartoonie one which fits for Fred.

Frank Welker. Not that Carl is bad, but he only played kid Fred so it's hard to compare the two.

Okay how many people would want to vote for the Young obnoxious Fred anyway? (sees one vote over ninety three)

Of course I would pick Frank he's been around for so long and I don't like the child Fred

@HienFan That one vote some silly reason, and now he has 0 cause I changed it.

Frank Welker is one of my all-time favorite voice actors. To me, Frank easily has earned the right to be listed amongst the elite voice actors, such as Mel Blanc, Don Messick, & Daws Butler, just to name a few.

Man, Scooby Doo started back in 1969. Frank is so close to being part of the 50th Anniversary cast in the year 2019. Only 6 coming on 5 more years to go. Come Scooby Doo & Frank, hang in there.

Not fair really but i'm going with Frank cause he has bein Fred since Scooby Doo started back in 1969 so that means every1 grew up with him. I hope he continues the role until he retires or dies but it wouldn't be the same without him.

Carl wasted his life really, got thrown in prison & then died of a drug overdose in 2011 aged 36. How sad but it was kinda his fault.

Frank Welker without a doubt, the originating and only true voice actor. Although, Carl Stevens did a great job as the younger, childish version of Freddy. I do not want to see the day Frank leaves the role of Fred. Maybe (notice how I said "maybe" people) Freddie Prinze, Jr. could come on.
said at 4:27 PM on Sun May 4 2014

Well it worked with Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. Zoinks!
said at 4:40 PM on Thu Aug 7 2014
@Daffyfan2014 it's possible that the live action cast is next in line, Marcy aka HDW was Linda Cardinelli so that would be one huge Jinkies! If Cardinelli takes over for Cohn. We'd have to hold the phone if Prinze Jr takes over.

I don't feel right voting for either since Carl is voicing a younger version of the character and Frank was the original. Both did great but it just doesn't feel like a fair comparison for either since they're both very diffrent takes on the characters in thier shows and are at diffrent stages of thier lives.

@OptimusSolo I hear both Fred and Velma were in the New Scooby-Doo Mysteries with cameo appearances. Marla Frumpkin reprised her role of Velma from The Scooby and Scrappy Show, but I hear Frank returned to do Fred. Why not? He voiced other characters in that series! XD

@PurpleWarrior13 I will have to check that out man, Thanks! A lot of the Scooby shows are missing the recurring/guests unfortunately :(
said at 11:06 AM on Wed Jul 18 2012
@OptimusSolo Anyway, I'm 100% sure Frank is the only one now. Fred and Velma were in a couple episodes of the New SD Mysteries, but not the New SD Show. And Frank did voice Fred in the New SD Mysteries. Sorry if I caused confusion before.
