Samurai Jack Samurai Jack

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Aku with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Samurai Jack

Aku is the main antagonist of the TV series Samurai Jack and Samurai Jack's arch-nemesis. Aku is a powerful wizard demon capable of shape-shifting and sorcery. Aku first clashed with Samurai Jack when it went on a rampage of destruction, ultimately taking over the empire of Samurai Jack's father. During their first fight, Aku used a time portal to send him forward in time. When Samurai Jack reappears, Aku had already overtaken the world with his darkness. While Aku is treated as a truly serious, dangerous foe, he has shown to be snarky and over-the-top at times.

Mako's the best, but I'm giving my vote to Greg Baldwin as a reward for how excellently he improved throughout his run in the show's final season. By the last episode, he literally shared a scene with archived audio of Mako and it felt totally natural.

Mako Iwamatsu: What is there to be said that hasnt already been said? Mako is Aku. Aku is such an amazing character for any actor to play. Mako makes him so over the top hammy, energetic hilarious, and on rare occasion genuinely intimidating. he pretty much stole every scene he was in and was a great contrast to Samurai Jacks rather quiet nature.

Greg Baldwin: I pretty much knew if anyone could be a worthy successor to the late Mako Iwamatsu it would be Greg. and in season 5 he finally got the chance to play Aku. Unfortunately his Aku voice did not quite sound right at first. It was rather odd most notably when he shouted his volumes felt inconsistent and awkward at times.

the most notable being in episode XCIII where he starts freaking out at the mud monsters messing up his floor which he had just had vacuumed "Stop! [Stammers] Look at what you're doing! You're getting yourselves all over the floor.
- Uh - I just had it vacuumed.
Out! Get out!"

his yelling just felt awkward and at times the tone was off. on a massive... massive flip side though, he improved dramatically starting in episode XCVIII and beyond not only did he really get into the swing of things (sounding alot more consistent in tone) but he really started to become more energetic and sounding alot like Mako. my favorite episode with him speaking is episode C where he gets to be angry funny over the top and even a little intimidating. The Episode also has the best Aku quote ever "I mean, you try and raise them right, then they run off with your mortal enemy. What's a dad to do?" Overall while it took Greg longer to get into the swing of things he truly became the next best thing for Aku.

Fred Tatasciore: usually Fred is a really good sound alike being able to mimic a lot of actors and even other voice actors but here he really falls flat. he sounds pretty much like a stereotypical Japanese man with a deep voice. hes not very charismatic intimidating or even funny. its a shame really. i blame voice direction on that one. maybe someday he could get the chance to have another shot.

So ranking is

Mako IS Aku, no question about it.

But, Greg Baldwin did an admirable job in season 5.

It took him a while, but holy crap did he really kill it as Aku. He managed to grab nearly everything Mako put down for his role, and channel it in the new season. He really does deserve a close second place, or even share first place with him.

I know I voted for Mako ages ago when I visited this voice compare, but I have to give props to Greg in Season 5. He's gotten much better over the course of this new season of Samurai Jack. He's definitely a worthy successor to Mako Iwamatsu.

I wasn't a big fan of Greg Baldwin's Aku voice, at first. His first appearance on the show. I was kinda surprised how off it sounded. Especially after seeing how well Greg did as Mako's replacement as Iroh in The Last Airbender. I guess I'm just so used to hearing Mako's voice on Aku I was picking up the difference more. Like how Mako pronounced it "Sam-Moo-Ri" but Greg pronounced it "Sam-Mer-I"

But after watching episode 5 and seeing a bit more of Aku, I definitely think he's a worthy successor. There were still some lines where it sounded off, but the one line "I am sorry old man, I think you are lost" sounded so much like Mako is honestly kinda gave me nostalgic goosebumps.

Honestly Mako is such a tough act to top, and he's pretty difficult to replace. Especially on a role like this where he completely made it his own. But I definitely now think Greg Baldwin is doing a great job carrying the torch.

@DeadpoolFool I thought I was the only person who noticed that line sounded really close to Mako's voice, glad to know someone else caught it too.
Given time, I think Baldwin will start cultivating the voice a little more. It's one thing to portray an actor's specific portrayal of a character, but to switch to a different character with the same actor's gotta be hard.

@Shiny Raticate Greg may not always hit the right spots when he's doing his imitation, but when he hits it....he REALLY hits it.

I agree. I think they may have changed up Aku's personality and make him more depressed, for Greg's sake. So it was easier for him to kind of make the character his own....But like you said, it's gotta be difficult for him, because he's not playing Mako's Aku, he's play Mako's Aku acting a different way then we're used to seeing him. That can't be easy.

I'm willing to bet, that by the end of the series. Greg will absolutely nail it.

@Shiny Raticate Just watched Episode 7, and behold we were right. Greg finally got to play The Aku we're more familiar with in the beginning flashback, and not the depressed Aku we've been seeing in other episodes.....and he nails it.

@DeadpoolFool Woo, so angry. Be careful, samurai, so much stress will give you a heart attack. Oh, what am I saying? Please continue, never mind what I say.

Oddly enough I feel like there are moments in episode 2 where Greg Baldwin's deep voice reminds me more of Fred Tatasciore's normal voice than Fred Tatasciore himself here does.

It's a very surreal feeling.

Mako Iwamatsu was fantastic as Aku and Greg Baldwin is doing a fantastic job carrying on his legacy in Season 5.

Fred was pretty good too.

Watched last night's episode. Baldwin wasn't that bad, not his best take on a Mako character but still way better than Fred.

1. Mako Iwamatsu
2. Greg Baldwin
3. Fred Tatasciore

The late, great Mako Iwamatsu just had the ability to make characters shine through under the proper vocal direction: would you ever guess the kindly, gentle, yet tea-loving Uncle Iroh would share the same voice actor as the evil, malicious, devious Aku? Mako was great here, too, he could sound threatening, intimidating, comedic, chilling, you name it (the clip used to represent his performance showcasing how funny he could be in particular)- just a memorable performance by & large that still holds up very well today.

As for the others...Greg Baldwin's impression, like with Iroh, is very good and just a slightly bit lighter in tone & delivery, but he still does his predecessor justice, and I'm sure he will (and has already) in the new season of Samurai Jack, too.

Fred Tatasciore's take is really the only weak one in the bunch here- he sounds very off from Aku's menacing performance and makes him sound a bit too goofy, as well as like a Caucasian male trying to imitate a Japanese man's performance, at several points.

Mako Iwamatsu easily! Although out of the two replacements, I'd say Greg Baldwin is easily the better one.

@HylianBelmont Ditto, though I do think Fred could pull off a pretty good Aku with a different approach. But Genndy said it himself no one can replace Mako RIP.

I hope once the new season premiere's Baldwin's Fusionfall clip will be replaced by the new season dialogue, Greg got so little material in Fusionfall I can't wait to hear him. He can do any Mako character, He did a good Master Splinter, He did a good Iroh and Im sure he will do a wondeful Aku, but no one can truly replace Mako 100%.

Mako is so definitive in the role. His energy is amazing, his delivery is fantastic, even his snark is really funny when he was.

Greg and Fred are decent replacements that both kind of lump together for me. They both come pretty close to sounding to Mako, they have the rasp and the energy, but I feel they don't really have the charm (or the material) to match.

I'd say if Greg or Fred isn't playing Aku in the final season, I think Mark Hamill or Eric Bauza would be perfect.

Mako is definitely my pick. Greg's an alright replacement though and Fred's average at best.

But I had an odd idea earlier: Does anyone think Brian Doyle-Murray could potentially be a decent Mako replacement?
