Sailor Venus

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Sailor Venus with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sailor Moon

Sailor Venus, also known as Minako Aino, is the fifth member of the Sailor Scouts, but the first to awaken her powers. She demonstrates love related powers to combat her enemies. She has dreams of becoming a star and is very cheerful.

For the entire first 2 seasons and all 3 movies of the DiC dub of the anime, "Mina" was voiced by Stephanie Morgenstern. However when the show returned for Seasons 3 and 4, Stephanie was unavailable and the director reevaluated the voice cast and recast several characters, and Stephanie Morgenstern was dropped as the voice of Sailor Venus. Emile Claire Barlow (who had previously stood in for Sailor Mars) was cast as her permanent replacement.

Cherami Leigh IS Minako to me. She brings out the character so well and her voice just matches the design to a T. I'll wait for her to be added before I make my vote.

Cherami Leigh, but until she's added here, Emilie Barlow.

Chaermi Leigh is the best Minako. She can make it cutesy and fun or serious and emotional whenever she needs to.

Stephanie Morgenstern- I personally like her voice better. She does a great job at balancing both the serious parts of Mina during fights as well as the funny scenes with her too. I would have loved to hear her voice in Crystal if she was ever offered the role again.
2. Emilie Barlow- She does a great job with the goofy side of Mina, but her acting is kind of bland. I prefer her Raye a little better.

Hmm... tough call here honestly. They both fit Mina fairly well but, I think Emilie Barlow's acting is a tad stronger though. So I'll give my vote to her!

I've heard some of Cherami Leigh's take, and honestly it didn't do much for me.

That "Hunkalicious" line of dialogue aside (Really, Cloverway?), I actually think Emilie Barlow did better with Sailor Venus' voice out of these two performances. To me, she sounds really intelligent, warm, and her delivery comes across as more natural.

Stephanie Morgenstern still did a decent job, though, but I feel her performance is just a little bit older sounding, and her delivery gets forced when she has to yell (examples in the clip being "Up here, guys!" and "Smash!").

I haven't heard Cherami Leigh's take, so I cannot comment on her performance.

Cherami Leigh (not listed here; she's the Viz dub VA for this production) is the best Sailor Venus. A cutesy sounding voice best suits Minako's design, and we all know that Cherami is mainly all about moe. :D

Sailor Moon was one of my first introductions to Anime, I have a fondness for the original cast (well, most of the cast). I really wasn't able to watch much past Sailor Moon R, because of airing and it being cancelled at one point in my area, so I'm more fond of Stephanie's Sailor Venus.

That being said, Emilie's isn't bad (It's very good). However, I liked the strength that came out in Stephanie's voice, because in my mind it suited Sailor Venus, who was the leader of the scouts before the Silver Millennium fell (If I'm remembering my facts right, it's been a while). Obviously, given the time, the original dub wasn't the best (although, I've seen far worse). That aside, it was still enjoyable to watch, and something I remember to this day even though I was no older than five when I first saw it.

I've seen a lot of comments about the viz dub (not just here), and while I haven't yet watched it through, I've watched enough to see it's not bad. Admittedly, it took me some time to adjust to the new voices, because they're certainly not the ones I grew up with, but I've become fond of them. In fact, I've come to enjoy them just as much.

That being said, I don't see a problem with Cherami's take on Minako, it reminds me a bit of both the original cast, though perhaps younger and softer. Given all this, I'd probably vote for either Cherami or Stephanie - I'll hold back my vote until Cherami's added and I've finished watching the viz dub through.

I think Emilie suited Mina best. Stephanie sounded more like I imagine Makato or maybe even Rei might than Mina.

Emilie Barlow was perfect as Venus. She was funny, silly, kinda ditzy, but still super determined and spunky. I'm upset CWI never dubbed Stars, just because I would've *loved* to hear her sing "Route Venus".

Stephanie Morgenstern is a great actress, but didn't fit Mina at all. I could see her better voicing Luna or Ms. Haruna.

Cherami sounds way too generic and bland for my liking.

@mosaic Understated comment of the year, yet I disagree.

You're clearly underestimating Cherami's acting, tone and performance that I heard more of.

@SteelEthlan Or maybe they HAVE heard just as much as Cherami's acting and just don't find her to be the best?

Nothing wrong with having that opinion.

2 Cherami
3 Emelie

@HienFan One thing I have to mention about Emelie is that her casual voice is good but when she yells she can get too girlie and weird sounding, she IS better as Minako than as Rei but still, Cherami also falls into that girlie part but it was surprisingly very solid and the best voice in the Viz dub(though it's kinda a rule for me to prefer Venus' voice out of everyone)

I still have a fondness for Emilie's take, but my vote will go to Cherami when she's added. She has the best qualities of both, while still doing her own thing.

Cherami's take is practically Stephanie's voice and Emilie's performance put together.

When she appears, I'll be voting for her.

@HienFan She sounds like she's going more for "surfer girl", actually. And I can see why that would work, but I think Emilie did better at capturing that character's off-the-wall personality.

Both voices are so beautiful, I love the original one but they are easily better

Stephanie all the way!
Emilie's was okay she did sound like how
I would imagine Minako chan would sound like.
But somehow I thought Stephanie did better.
Probably because I was more used to her.

@Misslolli Disagreed there. Emilie fits Minako's upbeat personality better than the more laid back Stephanie.

@Galactic_Cyrus I agree. I think The thing that the majority of the actors seemed to miss was the fact that these girls need to sound more youthful and invested into the moment they're in. I think Emelie captures that feel well, she dopunfs more invested into her dialogue than Stephanie is. Stephanie to me has that "Yeah, whatever" type feeling which is a tad bland.

*She SOUNDS more invested into her dialouge*
(I hate typos...)

i think emilie's is more simialr to the japanese, but stephanie's was better but emelie's did have some good moments though
said at 4:55 PM on Wed Dec 25 2013
@animenerd99 I think sounding as close to the japanese character as possible is more important than how you'd personally feel the character should be potrayed. I think Stephanie puts too much maturity in her tone and not enough emotion.
said at 3:59 AM on Fri Aug 1 2014
@MicroPhoneBass Well it backfired with that Jiang Wei dude in Dynasty Warriors with his new voice actor trying THAT for trying to sound like the Japanese VA
said at 6:23 PM on Fri Feb 22 2013
Stephanie. She was absolutely fantastic. She added a maturity to her voice that I adored. Yes, they're teenagers, but when I was little, all the DiC voices sounded like strong young women in their late teens, early 20s, and that's why Sailor Moon was more than just a kid's show.

Along with Katie Griffin, Terri Hawkes & Susan Roman, Stephanie was just the perfect Sailor Scout.

Emile, she's more Minako-chan then the Original based on these sound-bites. There should be both emotional, action type samples in my opinion. Since Stephanie's clip contains an action scene while Emilie has Minako's normal personality.

I have to say, I much prefer Emilie to Stephanie, simply because...well, I know Venus is a STRONG character but I feel like Steph's performance was too tomboyish and more fitting of Jupiter. It's really interesting to hear the difference.

Meh. My opinion's changed on this one. I think Emile fit the character slightly better than Stephanie. She sounded more age appropriate, funny, youthful, and energetic. She just sounded more believable as this character. That clip doesn't really do her justice to be honest. Stephanie sounded a tad too mature, and too sophisticated. Yeah, she sounded more chipper, but she also sounded like she was a young adult as opposed to a teenager that was reflected well in Emile's performance. Plus Emile could do the "boy crazy" side of Mina well. It's pretty clear that Emile's performance is more what the creator had in mind.
