Sailor Moon

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Sailor Moon with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon, also known as Usagi Tsukino, is the main character of the mega hit series Sailor Moon. She can sometimes be a lazy school girl who's always late for class or a whiny cry baby, but she can also be very sweet and heroic as well, though she does struggle to get used to her new found powers. She is also very loyal to her friends, Tuxedo Mask and Chibiusa, and will bravely fight evil when those she cares about are on the line.

When the original edited English version from DiC and Optimum Productions premiered in 1995, "Serena" was first voiced by Tracey Moore, who played the role for the first 11 episodes, before leaving to focus more on her theater workandwas officially phased out of the character by episode 22 after returning to voice the role for episodes 15 and 21. However, she did remain a member of the show's overall talent pool and notably voiced one of the Doom and Gloom Girls in episode 40. A few of the Sailor Says segments she recorded during her run were also recycled for the second season.

Tracey Moore's replacement was Terri Hawkes, who was introduced to the role in episode 12, and was officially phased in the character by episode 22. She played the role for the rest of Season 1, as well as Season 2 (Sailor Moon R), and all 3 movies. However, Hawkes went on maternity leave when production of Season 3 began, and declined to reprise her role.

Hawkes's replacement was Linda Ballentyne, who voiced the role for the last two seasons of the English run (Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS).

Sailor Moon's singing voice was supplied by Jennifer Cihi for Kid Rhino Records. Cihi was asked to imitate Terri Hawkes' Sailor Moon voice as best she could because all the songs for the series were recorded in Los Angeles, wheres the actual dialogue was recorded in Toronto

In Sailor Moon Crystal and the uncut redub of the original anime franchise from Viz Media and Studiopolis, Usagi/Sailor Moon is voiced by Stephanie Sheh.

Stephanie Sheh. She brings out all of the right amount of silliness and charm to play the character. She honestly sounds like Kotono Mitsuishi speaking English with an American accent IMO.

Stephanie Sheh. Tracey Moore is OK, and Jennfer Cihi actually would've done a good job if she was allowed to voice-act the role. I can't stand Terri Hawkes and Linda Ballantyne's performances.

It's a tie between Stephanie and Tracey to me.

 2 Shout Outs!
1. Stephanie Sheh- My favorite Usagi voice (behind Kotono of course!). She sounds very clumsy, lazy, and innocent, but is also able to sound serious and mature when the scene calls for it. My only complaint for her would be that she gets shrill when she screams.
2. Tracey Moore- My favorite "Serena" voice. She sounds closest to a klutzy teenager out of the three voices. However, her voice sounds rather off for the "crybaby" scenes. I would have loved to hear how she would have sounded once the more serious scenes came around.
3. Terri Hawkes- She gives off a larger variety of emotions and is really good at the comical parts of Serena, but she sounds too silly for most of the serious scenes. Regardless, she makes me laugh a lot and it is also a shame that she left the show as well, because I am curious to know what Cloverway would have done with her.
4. Linda Ballantyne- She has a nice voice, but she sounds a little too old and throaty for a teenager (though I don't blame her because she was told to imitate Terri). This does kill some of the comedy moments, but she makes up for it during the serious moments. She sounds absolutely broken during the battle with Pharaoh 90 and in the last episode, she uses a more natural voice as Neo-Queen Serenity begging Rini to wake up. If the Cloverway dub wasn't rushed, and Linda was allowed to do something else with the voice, I think she could have done a great job.
5. Jennifer Cihi- She is pretty good at imitating Terri and has a nice singing voice. Can't really comment on acting though.

I'm not sure if I should post it here for Princess Serenity but both Terri and Linda actually did really good I think for the more mature take, Stephanie was good for the most part as well but sometimes slip into her Sailor Moon voice

1. Stephanie Sheh/Tracey Moore (tie) - Both use voices that fit Serena very well, and make her sound cute, earnest, and innocent. I suppose Tracey Moore's take edges out for me slightly because it isn't quite as shrill.

2. Teri Hawkes - I actually rather like the voice itself tbh. It's definitely rather distinctive but her acting sounds a bit off to me. Still I like her take too!

3. Linda Ballantyne - Decent enough I guess. But I think she sounds a tad too old for the part, but her performance is still good for what it's worth!

4. Jennifer Cihi - She has a lovely singing voice definitely! But I'm not sure how she would've done as the character outside of that though...

Now that Stephanie's up, I figured I might as well give some updated thoughts.

Stephanie Sheh: Still my overall favorite of Sailor Moon's English voices. She's a great actress and manages to nail all the aspects of Usagi's character that Kotono did. In fact, she even shares one complaint I have of Kotono's take: She can get a bit too shrill sometimes. As an anime fan/fan of Kotono's take it doesn't bug me too much, but it does make her take YMMV.

Tracey Moore: The best of the Serenas, and she's tied with Stephanie for my favorite English voice. I like to describe her as the best localized voice for Sailor Moon. She sounds cute, innocent, and youthful, but lacks the shrillness that turns some English-speaking fans off of Stephanie/Kotono's take. It's such a shame she was in so few episodes of the old dub. I would have LOVED to have seen how she would have done in one of the more serious episodes.

Terri Hawkes: I grew up with the DiC Sailor Moon dub like a lot of fans did, but I never cared much for Terri's take. Her voice is charming, but she usually ruined any serious or emotional scene. Her performance in general tended to grate on me.

Linda Ballantyne: I think she gets a bit too much hate. Once she stopped trying to imitate Terri Hawkes, her performance improved a lot. She still sounded miscast as far as age went, but her acting was actually really good. She's the best actress of all of Serena's.

Jennifer Cihi is N/A since she didn't actually act as Serena, but she was a nice singing voice for her.

@1dbad Surprised you noticed that of Linda, I had enjoyed her later take more but I think a lot of people remember her more for the Terri imitation I didn't like SuperS but Linda's voice was one of the best things there
said at 9:33 PM on Thu Mar 9 2017
@HienFan Linda's work in SuperS blew me away! it makes me sad people are so quick to write off Linda based on her first few episodes. She grows into the role the more you watch.
said at 7:24 AM on Tue Mar 14 2017
@1dbad You could say that for most dub especially if they are not popular I get it and it's alright but some do tend to go out of their way to just dismiss things

But that line in the end of Super S before saving Chibi Moon though it was perfect
said at 3:50 PM on Sun Mar 26 2017
@HienFan Very true! Pretty much every dub is a bit shaky at first. That's why I always watch a few episodes before I make any judgments on it or its VAs.

It was! Stephanie Sheh is a good actress, but I doubt even she'll be able to deliver it as well.
said at 6:37 PM on Mon Jun 19 2017
@1dbad I always felt she sounded much better at the conventions I've seen, including the one I've been to, than what I've heard in the show. Although to be fair I haven't seen some of the later episodes, so maybe she did get better in the show itself for all I know.
said at 12:30 AM on Tue Jun 20 2017
@Metabad Agreed! Her con performance are great, and make me think it was the voice director that held her back in the series But she does improve in later episodes. Compare any of the SuperS episodes to the early S episodes and there's a noticeable difference in her performance quality.

Im from Latin America , and i feel blessed that back in the day we had Sailor Moon mostly faithful to what the JP version was , unlike the American version , without mentioning the huge blessing of having Patricia Acevedo as Sailor Moon for all South America.

That being said , however , i have actually watched many many episodes of the english dub , both originals and Viz considering that many fans treat the former 2 as the biggest joke ever , and i can see why BUT I must say that out of all the 3 ladies behind the original english Series , i will favor Tracey Moore the most. She was just so good! Her voice naturally fit the character and her speeches were on point , and while i love Terri , it AMAZES me how people refer to her as the favorite ... To me she is nice but too goofy and many of the delivered lines are just a big no.

The series originally in English was censored enough , so having an Off sounding voice from the MC just puts the final nail in the coffin .

''He is tuxedo mask , i dont believe it''

And many others are examples in which i dont like Terri's take. And dont get me started at Linda , she was a plain miscast , but i do feel for her since she was on preassure because they wanted her to sound like Terri and she just couldnt and the final product came out as awkward.

From these 3 ladies , i will go with Tracy and Terri as a close second and sadly Linda in 3rd place.

In the end , My ultimate vote needs to go to the one and only Stephanie Sheh , She nails this crybaby , funny but heroic and pure hearted character. Perfect decision to cast her as Sailor Moon!

My favorite out of them is Stephanie Sheh; I think she fits Usagi's youthful personality the most, and she has the best acting out of all of them. Tracey Moore is at a close second and Terri Hawkes is probably at a third, but by no means bad; they both fit the character decently well. Linda Ballantyne... she seems like a very nice lady, and she's actually quite funny as Sailor Moon (if sometimes for the wrong reasons), but her voice sounds way too old and goofy. XD Jennifer Chi I don't really have much to say about because she was just the singing voice, but... she's a good singer. And she sounded close enough to Terri Hawkes, I guess.

None of them are perfect to me, but I'd ideally have liked Tracey Moore's voice combined with Stephanie Sheh's voice acting for an English take on Sailor Moon, but since we don't have that, I'd go with Stephanie Sheh for the best of the group.

Terri Hawkes is alright, but could get a bit snooty at times. Jennifer Cihi sang well, but otherwise, is forgettable is best.

The only one that really bothered me was Linda Ballantyne, though, she's actually a nice woman...but her take on the character just sounded too old and nasally for me.

Okay okay okay. I just realized that they had a voice actor change and I have literally been watching SM for like forever XD. My whole childhood basically!
I had took a break from Sailor moon when I was 9 because I couldn't stand when the voice actor changed in episode 83, now I know about voice actors and stuff.
I just recently got back into Sailor Moon so I was watching it in Sub (because I hate most anime dub) and decided to listen to my favorite obnoxious voice, which I now know as Terri Hawkes. I really disliked Linda's voice acting I hated it so much I couldn't watch Sailor Moon anymore.
I am watching the sailor moon dub on hulu which I think uses Stephanie Sheh. But I feel like Terri kinda fits Sailor Moon' know...self? It's not only because I only remember her voice after not watching Sailor Moon so long- it's just that- I know her voice is kinda...nasally? (is that right? XD) I just, in my personal opinion love Terri Hawkes as Serena. It makes me happy to hear Terri play as Serena because that was the first anime I ever watched. I am literally crying right now because of how much I've missed the Sailor Moon dub.
Linda actually does sound similar to Terri but I just disliked it and I don't know why. As for Tracey, yeah she sounds like a freaking teenager but everyone has their own opinion and I just love Terri's voice acting the most.

That Terri Hawkes is the lead in the poll is proof that the nostalgia filter is a powerful thing indeed. Terri actually started off decently enough, even if she was a disappointing step-down from Tracey Moore, but after the Nephlite arc she started to suck regularly, with some exceptions (mainly the serious scenes, she actually did well with them...that is, when she knew it was supposed to BE serious, as opposed to ruining serious moments with silliness.) The biggest issue I have with Terri is not only was the acting bad, but the style just wasn't Usagi. Usagi is supposed to be an innocent child-like character...immature and flawed, yes, but not mean. Terri's Serena was often a rude, sarcastic, valley girl of a teenager whose ditziness was most often blown into full-blown airheaded stupidity that her friends regularly mocked her for. Linda Ballantyne was exactly the same, but up to 11 and with an inappropriately deep voice as well. Honestly, Jennifer Chi (judging from her speaking part in "Who Do You Think You Are?") was not ideal either, but she would have been better than either Terri or Linda.

Tracey Moore and Stephanie Sheh, however, are both perfect English-language Usagis. I actually prefer them to Kotono Mitsuishi (whose high pitch could get really grating), they both capture the essence of the character and make her really entertaining to listen to.
said at 10:52 PM on Sun Mar 6 2016
@Boss_Giovanni The poll has been running since long before Sheh was added. When she was finally added, her tally started at zero while everyone else kept their old votes. The fact that she's now tied with Tracey and close to catching up with Terri is actually pretty impressive.

Tracey Moore is hands down, the best English voice for Sailor Moon. Ever. She fit the character perfectly, and she has a lot of energy and spunk to her voice. The fact she only voiced "Serena" for a mere 15 episodes is a crime against humanity.

Terri is okay. She's probably my least favorite, simply because she just makes Serena sound so goofy. I think she did a good job with the 17 Lost Episodes and the R movie, but overall she was kinda bad. Overacted way too much, didn't sound like a teenager, and killed any serious scenes.

Linda gets way too much hate. She played "Serena" much closer to Tracey, and how Kotono voiced the character. She's a really good actress, and was brilliant with serious scenes (something Terri sucked at) but her voice was just too deep. She can't pass off as a 15 year old. She would've been perfect as Queen Serenity.

Stephanie... eh, she gets the job done. She's not the best voice, but she isn't bad. She's just there.

Kotono Mitsuishi IS Sailor Moon. She just nails every aspect of the character, she sounds like big cry baby, she gets very over-emotional, she can be petty and jealous and very childish yet she has the biggest heart you could imagine, she's sweet, compassionate and in the end will fit for the truth, love, honour and justice. I'm glad that there if there had to be only one reprisal from the original anime for the Crystal remake it would be Kotono. Because of Sailor Moon, Kotono Mitsuishi is my favourite female seiyuu in all of Japan. Keeping all that in mind which of these dub voices does Usagi Tsukino and Kotono's original performance justice......Stephanie Sheh!

Seriously Stephanie Sheh sounds almost spot on to Kotono in every way, she has a very cute high pitch voice and brings so much energy and love to the role. The thing that really impresses me is her battle cries...why because she actually sounds almost identical to Kotono. It just blows my mind how spot on this casting is. I believe the original creator Naoko Takeuchi hand picked Stephanie Sheh for the role and it's really not hard to see why she picked her because as far as I'm concerned she is the English Sailor Moon and this is without a doubt my favourite role of hers.

I could just stop here and call it a day but I might as well talk about the other original dub voices.

Tracey Moore was a decent fit for Usagi Tsukino/Serena though there was something a bit off with her performance, I can't quite place it but she definitely sounded the most like a crybaby teenage girl.

Terri Hawkes sounds kinda bit more mature but she unfortunately started speaking in a valley girl accent and sounds a bit too goofy but I can understand why she is a favourite to many people who grew up with it but to myself I don't think she fits that well.

Linda Ballantyne was terribly cast as Sailor Moon. She didn't sound like a teen at all, she sounded like a drunk mid-30's/40 year old floozy which is ironic since she was younger than Tracey or Terri. Her voice just fluctuates all over the place and sounds ridiculous and not in a good way. I mean no disrespect to Lina but she was just a poor fit for the character altogether.

Jennifer Cihi was a good signing voice in fact I'd say she was more pleasant to listen to than most of the other older dub voices.

With that said, Stephanie Sheh In The Name Of The Moon! I'm Voting For You!

I will say, and I'm not sure if this counts, but Linda was TERRIFIC as Princess Serenity in Rini's flashbacks, etc. Her mature voice worked very well with that kind of part, and she sounded very lovely. I will say this that Stephanie is better than some of the older actresses, she sounded closer to the original Japanese version and she sounded geniune while Tracey could get too whiney and Terri was too valleygirl and wasn't very natural when she had to emote

Linda Ballantyne is so annoying although you get use to her voice. She also learned how to carry Serena's/Usagi Tsukino's cut of her jib.I learned to put those feelings aside and just focus on what a masterpiece Sailor Moon is!! favorite is defiantly Tracey Moore, she does put more emotion into Serena/Usagi Tsukino. Terri Hawkes version is a little more matured and reasoning it does show how she made Serena/Usagi Tsukino more of a mother figure to rini and more of a leader although whiny cry baby and hungry sweet tooth Serena/Usagi Tsukino is still there.

Tracey Moore sounded the best to me...smooth, clear, and like a teenager.

I'd go with Stephanie Sheh in second, but to me, she sounds way too high pitched for her age and can't really do.

Terri Hawkes has a good voice, but this awkward accent slipped out a bit, and her delivery got stilted a few times.

Jennifer had a nice singing voice.

The worst to me is Linda Ballantyne as she sounded way too deep and rough as well as old for a teenage girl.

@Galactic_Cyrus Oh I can tell she sounds similar to Terri but there is something I really don't like from Terri's take that Linda doesn't have- That damn Cowgirl Yoller

Tracey Moore is the only one that actually fit the age Usagi was supposed to be while also potraying that whiny yet naively innocent side to what the character itself is marketed on. Tracey is probably the only actress that can portray "Usagi" as a cute 14 year old girl. She was supposed to be.

Terri Hawkes does deserve her credit for her experience and happened to be the most professional of the entire cast as "Sailormoon" and "serena" which were potrayed very well in terms of presentation. She knows how to put variety on her emotions and how to correctly emphasize the moods shes supposed to be in.. and her signature yodelling for "Serena's" clumsy side is in fact a signature for the western side of the character. She knows how to make Serena sound confident and head-strong wether it be against the monsters or Rei.

Terri nailed the typical, lazy 16 year old American 80's Teen but she didn't capture "Usagi" actual personality at all and by comparison is now a totally different character than what should have been intended.

HOWEVER as "Usagi" Terri just doesn't match the original character's personality at all. At times I think Terri could have tried to sound less snarky and sarcastic and more childlike if she raised her own pitch a bit and was less constantly hyperactive. The problem with Terri is that she sounds too goofy most of the time and doesnt naturally portray the character's leading traits as believable as Tracey did. I think if atleast if she was redirected by Funimation she could craft the character into an image a lot closer to the japanese Usagi which is the only thing she honestly lacked. She has the delivery but was moreso just misdirected.

Linda now was just a horrible miscast, not because of her preformance but by the direction she was told to take. Her immitation of Terri was bad in that aspect alone but for Usagi it was horrible. She sounded Way too old and shrill for the role and it shows because even she said herself she was only casted to mimic Terri who already didnt fit the role. She exaggerated everything Terri already over-emphasized.

I'll give it to Terri Hawkes. She got the most to work with, and she flet the most natural in the role. At least, for me, anyway. The over-the-top superhero, the emotional young woman; every angle of Usagi (I prefer to use the Japanese names...) was nailed.

As for this remake anime, if it is dubbed... I want to see Laura Bailey as Usagi myself, actually, for a new actress to take the mantle.
said at 6:46 PM on Wed Dec 25 2013
@Lion's Edge Nobody at Funimation is "New" in fact they recycle the same people for every dub they do and it drastically takes away from the individuality of the characters they play, especially the leads. I'd hate to hear another character overlap "Usagi's" body just because Funimation is too lazy to get new voices for an occasion like this. Though as long as Colleen Clinkenbeard and that annoying Emily Blau doesnt voice "Usagi" then whatever.... Laura DOES fit the role the best of what they have... but I'd hate to hear "Maka Albarn" the whole time... instead of a genuine Usagi.

@MicroPhoneBass ...You have misinterpreted what I meant by "new"... I meant a voice actress, who has not played the role before, taking over the role. A new voice actress for Sailor Moon, in the same way that Roger Craig Smith was a new voice actor for Batman in Arkham Origins, for example.
said at 8:37 AM on Thu Dec 26 2013
@Lion's Edge If there was an *edit* function here I could myself better.

I didnt misunderstand your point, I was thinking a bit further. Technically everyone at funimation counts as a new voice for the character specifically under funimation. What I was saying was that on a greater level I would prefer if they were to get a new voice entirely for this character exclusively. Laura Bailey is a "new" voice for Sailormoon but I'd only fear that she uses another character voice for Sailormoon herself. As I mentioned I don't want to hear Maka Albarn in Sailormoons body. I'd rather a new unidentifiable sound. Even if its someone they already have in their cast, I'd rather them not jump to their immediate first row of actors: Laura Bailey, Colleen Clinkenbeard... etc....

I'll repeat my earlier statements: Tracey Moore is the best English voice the character has ever had, and it's a downright travesty that she was the shortest lived. Her voice was very natural for Serena and the performance was just right in all the right areas.

Terri Hawkes had a great voice too and nailed both the hammy superhero parts of Sailor Moon and the serious emotional parts of Serena, but was terribly inconsistent and over-the-top for most of her performance. She forced this ditzy, Valley Girl-like inflection in her voice that went all over the place and made Serena come off as an unlikable flake far too often. Her shrill shouting and "yodel scream" were just awful. With better voice direction, she could have been truly awesome, but as it stands, her performance leaves alot to be desired.

Linda seemed intent on imitating Terri, only she did it FAR WORSE. The voice is not age appropriate and the acting is beyond over-the-top to the point where the character becomes unbearable and obnoxious. This voice actress sucks hard as both Serena and Sailor Moon. She's only tolerable in her Neo Queen Serenity form, or in the character's quieter and more serious moments in general, but the voice is still too deep for her. It's just a huge miscast.

ugh these voices.. like something from a dreamworld..
well, I gotta say Tracey, but I adore Terri's voice too.. both are homeruns for me, just wish Tracey stayed longer!
Linda was the worst thing to happen to a kids show ever back then.. its the most obnoxious voice I could ever pull from the lowest pit in the lowest corner of hell...
said at 8:28 PM on Sun Oct 6 2013
@sosoubi Agreed. Tracey was just so natural in the role. Terri's voice is great, but the performance was really off and often obnoxious. Linda...even worse. MUCH worse!

I've never really watched SM but isn't Usagi/Serena supposed to be teenager? They all sound MUCH older. And they don't even use their acting to try and transcend the age factor of their voice, all the performances sound like something you would give to the good witch from Wizard of Oz or the fairy god mother from Cinderella. That said Tracy Moore probably sounds the best of the four. Still if the rumours about Funimation getting SM are true I hope they get someone with a more younger sounding voice, maybe Cherami Leigh.
said at 8:01 PM on Wed Oct 16 2013
@Ringworm128 She's supposed to be 14 (later aged up to 16). Tracey sounds pretty age-appropriate, and Terri sometimes sounded like a teenager, but I think they stopped trying after a while.
said at 3:56 AM on Mon Jun 3 2013
When I was younger and watched Sailor Moon, it was with it being Tracey's voice and Terri's doesn't sound that bad but it still sounds odd compared to Tracey, who best fits the role of Serena. I know her voice is supposed to get deeper as she gets older but really they don't suit; none of them do except for Tracey who sounds more like a manga character. The others do not suit the role, especially Linda. Linda's voice for the role ruins it a little. Also you cannot even distinguish what Jennifer's voice actually sounds like for the character.

Overall, Tracey's voice suits best for the character Serena who is a whiny, melodramatic, crybaby.
said at 12:02 AM on Sat Jun 1 2013
Ok... This one is tough.. but here's my picks in order:

1. Terri Hawkes delivers the performance that best fits the role and gets my #1 pick. In the blurb she gives off a variety of emotion: confusion, humility, wonder (can humility be counted as an emotion?).

2. Tracey Moore definitely delivers the role as 'crybaby Serena'. Her voice didn't grate my nerves and her acting was believable for a teen girl...well.. that's debatable but still every good.

3. Jennifer Cihi - that voice when she's singing, that's so awesome that she can do that in character voice and I love that she could do that staying in character. Big points for that.

I cannot tell you how much I did NOT like Linda's voice. Did she have a cold when auditioning for the part? I don't know who to blame there but it did not fit. HOWEVER, she did deliver her lines very well. I enjoyed her trying to figure out dates and that sounded very believable for an airhead. Unfortunately she would be the last pick I could give of the 4.

Terri was my favourite, though Tracey did sound better when Serena was a crybaby. Terri sounds more mature, princess like and sophisticated....Linda on the other does not sound like sailor moon! She sounds weird to me. She sounds more like a Lita or a negamoon's heartbreaking for a moony fanT.T but I guess it is because I grew up with Terri's...Limda sounds a bit like she has a sore throat:(
said at 1:22 PM on Thu Mar 28 2013
I think the main reason people like Terri is the nostalgia, because I didn't grow up with her voice so I find it to be kind of odd and a little annoying. Maybe I would feel differently if I had watched Terri's Serena as a kid, but for me the best voice is Tracey because she sounds more like a real teenager. Also, people keep saying Terri made her more "mature" as Serena grew older, but her character only went from 14 to 16 throughout the entire series. I think Tracey was more than capable of capturing that essence if she'd been given the chance.
said at 8:30 PM on Sun Oct 6 2013
@bloop If anything, I think Terri sounded LESS mature.
said at 11:01 PM on Wed Dec 25 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus I kinda wish Terri wasn't so wavy with her pitch in some of her lines within mid sentence. I found it hard to follow. If she kept her tone consistant with the emotion she was trying to portray it would a bit easier to take her delivery seriously. I get its for humor but at often times it makes the comedy scenes feel forced rather than situational jokes.

Tracey seems more fitting for Serena. Terri still sounds good though, she kinda goes into a "Dorothy" voice sometimes. Linda makes Serena sound like she has a sinus infection, Girl needs to use a Neti Pot or something. I can't really say anything for Jennifer except that her singing voice for Serena is beautiful.

Okay Tracey is good for the first season yes, I do agree she has a GOOD voice for serena. But you have to remember that time goes by and serena gets older, so she has to sound a bit more "teenager" like, and thats why I think Terri Hawkes was the BEST AND MOST FITTING FOR THE ROLE. Linda, it sounded like she had something stuck up her nose and had a bad hangover.
said at 11:06 AM on Sat Dec 28 2013
@saylamoon Perhaps if she was better trained by the Funimation's director: Terri could fix up her voice. If she were to try and sound more like Tracey buy raising her pitch a bit and remove the bass in her voice and ditch the wierd wavering speech pattern she originally had... with a more consistant base tone (Like what Emilie does for Rei) she could craft a younger Serena for the first few episodes as required. ie. Like a 14 year old. Because she nails the older SM perfectly and that being the majority of her characer after season 1 its more logical.

Moore all the way. It's too bad for the series and for the vast majority who grew up with Sailor Moon not having to hear Tracey's voice instead of Hawkes. Not saying Hawkes was bad but my pleasure to my ears is well suited to Moore's portrayal not only to Kotono's Japanese voice but also Usagi does sound 14yrs old, comical, whiny, and courageous. She's perfect for the role. Hawkes is still good, spunky, not a fan of the many choice words in the English dubs but what can we do? They do this often anyways.

Tracey Moore = perfect voice and performance. Terri Hawkes = great voice with WAY too much overacting. Linda Ballantyne = TERRIBLE. Jennifer Chi = Shouldn't even qualify since Serena never actually sang that in the show: it was a background song.
said at 7:29 PM on Fri Mar 9 2012
@Galactic_Cyrus It was still from Sailor Moon's perspective, and played in the background as if she were singing it. Also, the fact that Cihi was chosen as a voice match for Hawkes, and the fact that several other Scouts had official singing voices (including some where the singing voice was actually used for characters actually giving singing performances).

Mercury's singing voice will be added eventually, and Jupiter's would mean creating a whole new VC because of it. I wouldn't do that unless there's a redub or something (god, I hope so) and the character is recast, I'll make a VC and include her DiC/Rhino singing voice.
said at 12:59 AM on Tue Jan 3 2012
I'm sorry, but I'm very opinionated on this ... Tracey did good, Terri did so much better and is my favorite. But then we come to Super S and I just had to stop watching .. because of two things. 1. Linda's voice makes me want to get violent, it's just THAT bad. You do NOT get used to it .. it's like they picked someone up off of the Super Short Bus and said 'hey we have a job for you, but it may ruin your reputation forever'.

Second was the transformation scene change from DiC to s3. While the original anime had the same change, I find that it sounds like a stinking soap opera intro and it just makes me want to vomit. I liked Season 1 and 2 ... even being a male fan (straight mind you, don't think I haven't been given a lot of crap to the contrary for liking sailor moon). I just don't know if I can stomach the remaining seasons. I might have to watch the japanese originals just to avoid that god aweful voice over though, if I'm going to watch them at all.
said at 3:49 PM on Tue Jan 10 2012
Hey I feel exactly the same way and share the exact same circumstance as you (male fan)! I loved Terri's work and I couldnt stand Linda's work so much so I stopped watching. I thought for all these years I was just being fussy fool, but it's good to see others share my opinion. It's a real shame cause I really enjoyed the show, but I never watched past season 2. I wish they would re-voice the whole series with some one good.

said at 1:24 AM on Sun Nov 6 2011
well, its just my opinion, for some sort of reason, Mrs. Terri performed a lot more "real" and I felt drawn towards her voice. She has really took out her own personality and protrayed Serena's , drama queen, sillly to goofy, to teasy sassy girl, and stuck out . I can see why the cast producers or director chosen her to portray Serena, its bc she was able to be flexible in Serena's character. of being hyperover actively teenaged her of loving food to guys ,, she seemed as if she was 100% serena, a crybaby, that showed a lot of different emotions of how a teenaged girl would feel about having the attraction against the opposite gender. I was very stunned , on how Terri really pulled out different sound tones of Serena and Sailor moon. now thats not easy to do. at all...... it takes a lot of training to just know how to "act" and sound believable within an character that you must portray. that is why my heart goes to Terri. She has very much inspired me to do something that I like to do for a living. I'm sorry for my messy wordy sentences for those who are reading my comments about Terri Hawks. Not to be soo defensive of who fits the character for serena or sailormoon.. but I had just don't see any interest in the other actors that also portrayed Serena/Sailormoon that heart throbbing performance as Terri H. has. For instance, Tracey's voice was.. somewhat... too original for me, if feels as if I've heard of other female actors portraying on a different character role as well. I do apologize for not enjoying the rest of the actor 's performances on Serena/Sailor Moon besides Terri Hawkes. I wonder why she's retired from v.o. . . .
said at 1:13 AM on Wed Sep 28 2011
It's hard to pick, Tracey sounded more like i would have imagined the character in the beginning of the series, young and kind of a whiny spaz. I really like the silliness in her voice so I'm picking her as my favorite. Yet at the same time, I think Terri's version of her was great when she was taking on the more mature mother and leader responsibilities so i cant complain either way. :)

wow... im disappointed, a lot of reviews here say.. tracey moore perfect for sailor moon role.. i was.... getting tired of.. hearing her.. young.. voice.. and i wanted someone who can do both young side and serious mature side. Terri H. did perfect. i don't understand why some would pick Tracey over more than Terri. Tracey, i can see her doing some other lead role character from other animes. but.. this is. a all to go Terri! sorry. Tracey and other female eng-dub sound very common voices.. for anime dubbing.. and.. the only one i hear that i thought was or is sophisticated is Terri H. Outstanding performance! 10 out of 10! Perfect Heroic/childish/princess voice over acting! And she has done OVA for Interlude! if anyone doesn't know about it. Terri's other leading role for Aya character in Interlude! watch it. but I'm so fixated on her voice performance for Serena/Sailormoon. < I can probably learn a lot from her from voice lip syncing! GOSH.
said at 5:43 PM on Sat Sep 10 2011
Well first of all, not to sound rude or anything, Terri Hawkes has a very heroic voice and she was perfect to bring out the goofy/sassy/crybaby/whine of side of Serea/Princess all at the same time. I can't believe the producers or whoever rejected her for the 3rd season. Tracey on the other hand, felt like she did great for Serena's puberty stage voice. And then, while the days of Serena's development of becoming who's she destined to be, and really showed how much Serena matured from Terri's voice!!!!!!And you can discern on how much Serena became more fearless during the Rini's eps too. A mother-like-role. Terri has a talent where she can draw you into Serena's aspect of her emotional traumas, I felt very drawn from her voice tones and techniques that she pulled off from the role of being a normal teenage high school girl to a super hero/queen of the moon role. Although Terri Hawke's performance was one of the best i've seen so far, sadly she seemed as if she retired from role playing for animes. which i wish she continues. After her first child was born during the last eps of 2nd season of Sailor Moon, she just had to step out of the role.. and was never re hired. It's not fair. Over all, If I was a sponsor for some eng-dub co. I 'd always recommend Terri Hawkes for heroic or princess like roles! She has a magnificent voice! Very rare voice for female acting. It's a pure touching voice that reaches many fans; including myself. I try imaging Terri voicing out Serena’s character on the shows.. But.. I always.. Imagine Serena’s face instead. That’s how much Terri makes Serena seem as if she’s a real human girl!

@K-eeitah Terri was asked to come back for the S and SuperS seasons, but she declined her role because of pregnancy leave (she ended up having twins). Because those last 77 episodes were recorded in such a short time frame (only a couple of months), Terri never had any opportunity to come back, and Linda kinda became her permanent replacement.

I think both Terri and Tracey are perfectly fitting. But Linda Ballantyne was absolutely TERRIBLE. Seriously, how the hell did she get paid to talk like that? Why did they pick an actress with a voice like that? I bought the Sailor Moon DVDs up until the end of Sailor Moon R, and stopped. There is no point in watching Sailor Moon S if I have to listen to this GOD AWFUL voice.

@rhapsody24 Her line readings came out VERY awkward, as if she sounded more like she was doing a terrible Ms. Frizzle impression rather than actually being Usagi. I don't understand why they would give Serena such a shrill, scratchy voice.. Terri didnt sound THAT disjointed.

All others were good, but as far as dubs go, Terri is my favorite 'cause that's who I grew up with. I don't really get how some can say she sounded 20. I just don't hear it. Now I really loved subbed SM and Kotono Mitsushi's voice is so cute it makes my ears wanna bleed sugar!
Especially when she says 'I will punish you' (Oh-show-ki-yo) in Japanese. Amazing VA-ing there. Cute, cute, cute!!

Never seen this show but wow lots of VA for the main character.

Lots of rumors somehow Funimation must rescue the license.

Since the old version was edited I guess it would be very likely to have a completely new dub if Funimation did get it.

Good for the fans of the show that they can listen to the old voices here. :P
