Voice Compare » Sabrina: The Teenage Witch » Salem Saberhagen

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Salem Saberhagen with sound clips and images.
Salem is one of the secondary protagonists of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series as he lives with the Spellman family namely Hilda, Zelda and of course Sabrina Spellman. Salem is known as a talking cat whom while he has a highly sarcastic sense of humor but despite of that he does genuinely help the Spellmans that he is living with whenever he can. Salem is generally referred to as Salem Saberhagen as he was once a warlock whom once aspired to take over the world but as punishment he was turned into a talking cat for a hundred years (but there were different reasons why he was turned into a cat in the past). But in the past Salem has been depicted as a relatively normal cat whom only meows (which is why the old Filmation series is excluded from this Voice Compare).

EDITOR'S OPINION

Today on the Sabrina The Teenage Witch VC section we have a little something from Sabrina's wise-cracking kitty... SALEM SABERHAGEN! We shall actually begin with the mid 90's live action sitcom of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in which Nick Bakay voiced the role of Salem. While Salem was not the only popular aspect of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom he was easily quite a fan favorite and Nick's performance for the role was a good reason why. Nick's performance for the role definitely suited Salem's Sardonic wit but does also suit on how Salem is not truly a bad guy in the series either. But still lets just say I can understand why Salem was always quite a fan favorite in the show and Nick Bakay's work on the role is a definite reason why.

While Nick Bakay did reprise the role as Salem in DiC's initial Sabrina the Animated series which was made back when DiC was owned by Disney and the show was on ABC. However in the early 2000's when DiC was still able to make Sabrina the Teenage Witch productions but no longer have Disney involved there was a bit of a VA cast change. So in the 2002 movie Sabrina Friends Forever, Louis Chirillo gets to take over the role here. While fans have complained that Louis' voice for the role  was a bit too different from Nick's lets just say but I thought it was decent enough. Louis' performance as Salem did have a fairly good amount of snark for the role which needless to say does work. Granted when it comes to Vancouver voice talent Louis Chirillo may not have been the best choice for Salem but he was a decent substitute nevertheless.

Now for the 2nd Sabrina animated series from DiC namely Sabrina's Secret Life in which surprisingly enough Veteran VA Maurice LaMarche got to take over the role here. While yes it was indeed nice that Maurice's Salem voice sounded more like Nick's Salem voice then Louis' but still Maurice does play the role of Salem as a Snarky aid to Sabrina rather well enough. While Maurice's work as Salem is not one of his most memorable performances but it is a good example of why he can play a comedic character rather well. Overall yes I would of course deem Nick Bakay's work to be the most memorable but Maurice LaMarche was a very close second with Louis Chirillo being a decent third.

(Update: Ian James Cortlett voices Salem in Sabrina: Secrets of the Teenage Witch. Ian's work is rather good as while unlike his early 2000s counterparts instead of trying to imitate Nick Bakay he does his own take on the role in which it is pretty good. Ian's performance does have a very good sense of energy as Ian does seem to be trying to channel the late Paul Lynde in which he does pretty well at that. So while I admit I am going with Nick Bakay the most but Ian along with Maurice are very close seconds.)

I dunno about you, but that 3D Salem design looks ugly.

This is really no contest for me. Nick is a really funny take, and Maurice does a great job impersonating him, despite sounding a tad bit more deadpan.

Not sure how to feel about Ian. It's way different, but works and fits well enough. And I'm going to agree, Louis just sounds like Roger from American Dad. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but that doesn't make it any less distracting XD.

Nick>Maurice>Ian>Louis.

Ian sounds like he's doing a bit of a Paul Lynde impression.

I'm still sticking with Bakay, I just love his voice. Although Maurice's impression of him is quite impressive.

BTW is that new Sabrina show any good?

Oh wow, the night I add the Ian clip is exactly three years after this compare was made!

Anyway, as difficult as it is to unhear Bakay as the character, Corlett's got some pretty good comic delivery going on. Makes me think of Paul Lynde a bit.

Nick Bakay is the one and only here. Maurice is the better impression between the two others. Louis's take sounds a bit like Roger Smith from "American Dad", IMO.

@Galactic_Cyrus

I agree. While Maurice is a very talented VA, no one can pull of those witty comments and that famous sob like Nick.

Nick Bakay is halarious. I know I spelt that wrong, so don't bother correcting me. I wonder what he's doing right now. If he's still acting, I know what type of character he could play as.

Nick Bakay- He was alot better when he voiced Salem than Maurice and Louis combined. His voice matched Salem.

Louis Chirillo- He sounded well he sounds like a rapper and thats all im going to say XD

Mauriche LaMarche-He did a good job voicing Salem in Sabrina's Secret Life but Nick Bakay was so much better and he almost sounded like Salem but Bakay was better

1. Nick Bakay - He captures Salem's smart-aleck wise-cracking personality
2. Maurice LaMarche - He flawlessly copied Bakay's voice
3. Louis Chirillo - Sorry but it just screams Dukey Test

I gotta go with Nick. He brings more the the character and has the best range as he could go from silly to kinda a jerk to being kind. Plus his delivery to some jokes were hilarious.

Louis is...alright. Grated his voice is a little higher than I would like for Salem but he did capture the sarcastic yet kind side of him.

Maurice does a good imitation of Nick's. Though anyone could tell it wasn't Nick but still good. One major problem I had with Maurice's take is he sounded a little bit too calm for Salem.
So basicly Nick all the way :D

There was also a British Salem voice in the STTW TV movie, but I guess it's unknown who voiced him there.
