Voice Compare » Ranma 1/2 » Soun Tendo
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Soun Tendo with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINIONAh yes the father of the Tendo family namely Soun Tendo is the subject of this Ranma 1/2 VC. And first of all we have Viz's English dub of the show that has been around since the early 90's in North America in which he is voiced by David Kaye. In which Soun is his earliest known role in anime and David did pretty well here. David Kaye's performance was quite fitting for the role whether its well-meaning middle aged father and also a bit more hammy when Soun lets just say gets a bit over-dramatic. Its not one of my absolute favorite performances from David Kaye its a great example of his work nevertheless.
And during the 2000's there was a Hong Kong dub of the series done for Animax in which Russell Wait voiced him in this dub. And I will admit to you all right now that Russell's performance in this dub is a bit of a mixed bag. First of all the biggest problem I have is that compared to David Kaye's work Russell's voice for the role is not quite as suitable namely on how David's voice did suit Soun's age in which to make a long story short Russell sounds a bit too young for the role. But to be fair in Russell's defense his performance wasn't bad as he does give a good attempt at a spirited performance for this role. Overall its okay but when it comes to Russell's work in the Animax Ranma 1/2 dub he is better as Tatewaki Kuno but that's for another VC for another time. Overall both are good but I am certainly going for David Kaye this time around.
