Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Genma Saotome with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINIONAlright folks today on the Ranma 1/2 VC section we have Ranma Saotome's not-so dear father GENMA SAOTOME! In the English dub of the Ranma 1/2 series that was released in North America by Viz ever since the 90s Genma was voiced by the late great Robert O. Smith in one of his earliest and most known roles and performances and its not too hard to see why. Robert is definitely able to sound like a fairly large middle aged father (though the fact that he was a middle aged father when the dub for the show first began does kind of help) and his performance for Genma was by all means just fine. While Genma himself is rarely ever considered to be good father material, Robert's performance does still have a fatherly feel for it in its own way and it was definitely suiting the role for Genma's various comical and occasionally serious moments. Basically its one of the best performances in the Ranma 1/2 dub and is one of the late great Robert O. Smith's best performances.
Over the course of the 2000s there was a HK-made dub for Animax in which he was voiced by Dave Bridges whom I was fairly pleasantly surprised with. I did like on how Dave does do a pretty good attempt at sounding like a big middle aged father (though granted unlike the late Robert Smith, Dave Bridges is only about a couple years older than me not that big a deal but I just thought I point that out). But still Dave does give a very good attempt as well as his performance does do a pretty good job being suiting for Genma Saotome all around and is probably one of the better performances in that dub. Overall yes once I again I admit I am going with the Viz dub again but both of these guys did really well with this role here.
