Franchise: Rankin Bass Classics

King Moonracer is a character from the original Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special made by Rankin Bass productions from 1964. King Moonracer is a winged lion whom is the Monarch of the Island of Misfit Toys whom goes around the world finding strange toys that children do not want and take them into his island until he can find them a new home. Moonracer genuinely cares for his subjects and is a benevolent and reasonable ruler whom is willing to aid those in his island whom are of need. In the 1964 TV special Moonracer was a reasonable authority figure who did aid Rudolph and friends but in the 2001 DTV movie that was based off of the Rankin Bass classics he was the one who needed some help.

Today on the Rankin Bass VC section we take a look at the king of the Island of Misfit Toys... KING MOONRACER! We shall begin with the 1964 classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in which Stan Francis was the voice of King Moonracer. Stan's voice and performance for the role was rather suiting as it did have a regal and majestic feel to it (and suiting Moonracer's benevolent persona). So in other words Stan's work as King Moonracer was another classic example of the voice acting in this classic TV special if I do say so myself.

In the 2001 DTV film Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys, King Moonracer appeared and was voiced by Colin Murdock. While there are those whom were bothered by how Moonracer was basically a cameo whom was having some bad dental problems. But Colin's voice work for the role did genuinely suit on how Moonracer was depicted in the film as Colin's voice and performance still sounded rather regal for the role even if Moonracer pretty much spent his screentime having a terrible toothache. While Colin ends up playing Moonracer rather differently from his 1964 counterpart it is still a good performance nevertheless and an alright example of his work. Overall I will say that Stan's work on the role is classic but Colin's wasn't too bad either.

1. Stan Francis- He created the role of the majestic lion and it fits the character perfectly
2. Colin Murdock- He has a good voice, but he doesn't really get much of a chance to sound like a king.

I don't find either voice very fitting.

Colin Murdock does a good voice match, but he doesn't get to play the more regal king aspect. Voting for Stan Francis.

Stan Francis had much more majesty in his voice. Though to be fair to Colin, the movie completely changed Moonraiser's character.
