EDITOR'S OPINIONToday on the Rankin Bass Classics VC section we take a look at Rudolph's love interest... CLARICE! In the original TV special of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Clarice was voiced by the late Janis Orenstein. As for Janis' voice I surprisingly have some slight mixed feelings here as while Janis' Clarice voice does sound nice and it does suit Clarice's friendly nature but in retrospection it seems to me that Janis' voice for Clarice does make her sound a bit older than Rudolph (when they are really about the same age). But in all fairness that is the only problem I have with Janis' work on the role as other than that her work as Clarice is pretty solid as her performance definitely suited Clarice's warm and kind persona very well.
About a decade ago in the 3-D film Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and The Island of Misfit Toys, while Janis did the speaking and signing voice of Clarice, Elizabeth Carol Savenkoff did the Speaking voice of Clarice in this movie. I must say I rather liked Elizabeth's work on this movie as for starters Elizabeth's voice for the role sounded a bit more youthful to me as she delivered a rather energetic performance for the role here. Elizabeth's work on the role suits on how Clarice deeply cares for Rudolph but does also have a life outside of him as she is learning how to fly so in other words Elizabeth's work as Clarice is probably one of her better performances. However as for Clarice's singing voice was done by Special Guest voice talent Shawn Southwick whom does some pretty good singing. (Granted she only does a little bit of singing at the very end of the movie though.) But still while its not hard to tell that Clarice's speaking and singing voices are different in this movie Shawn did a pretty good job singing for the role here. Overall I am going with Janis and Elizabeth here as Janis' work is pretty classic while Elizabeth's work on the role was very fitting with Shawn at a decent second.
