Pokemon Pokemon

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Lucario with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Pokemon

Lucario is a jackal-like Fighting/Steel Pokemon with the ability to detect Aura, the life essence of all living things. This allows it to read their thoughts and see them from afar. It is the evolved form of Riolu.

While most Lucarios cannot speak, a talking Lucario has appeared twice. In the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, it was voiced by Sean Schemmel. Despite common belief, he did not reprise the role for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Instead, Bill Rogers provided its voice. However, Sean Schemmel returned to voice Lucario in 2014's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Bill wasn't too bad, and his more aggressive voice did work (Brawl is a fighter, after all). My vote goes to Sean, because even though he could be a bit too gruff, his voice was a little less forced.

Sean Schemmel for the win.

Bill Rogers sounds like he's really straining himself to do the voice and it sounds so gruff and forced.

I'm going to have to disagree with the minority here, and vote for Sean here. His voice is much less gruff and forced than Bill's is here- Bills take sounds like your generic, deep, constipated voice to me, whereas Sean sounds natural in voicing Lucario and is smoother.

Goku is the best Lucario (also it's pretty cool that Goku was in Smash the entire time!)

Sean Schemmel obviously has the bigger advantage here. Getting to play Lucario in the movie itself and thus, got a chance to truly flesh out the character a lot more. And while his performance in SSB4 wasn't quite as enjoyable, it was still pretty nice to hear him in the role again and I still thought he did a nice job there too.

Bill Rogers only voiced the character in Brawl, and he was serviceable all things considered. But he overdid it with the gruffness I feel.

Definately Sean Schemmel. I understand Brawl is a fighting game, but Bill Rogers' Lucario is honestly not far off of Batman....Which, in this case, is not a good thing.

For once, I can genuinely get behind your opinion on this one: Sean gave such a weight & sheer presence to Lucario, and I feel that was lost entirely in Bill's performance- they're both similarly gruff, but Sean could emote in a way that didn't make him sound angry all the time or agitated: namely, in a sincere way.

I seem to be in the minority in the comments for this one, yet with the majority vote, but I go with Sean Schemmel because he actually brought some humanity and depth to the role beyond "insert generic fighting gruff, deep, burly voice #576" in the role, though I'll concede the one I prefer is the Movie 8 take, not the SSB4 one.

In that Movie, Sean managed to make Lucario seem like a real character full of grief for being betrayed and being unable to trust anyone, but also nailed the parts when he was dying after reuniting with his master after years had passed.

Bill Rogers just doesn't do a thing for me, since it's just like his Brock, except even more constipated in my eyes.
said at 10:31 PM on Sun Mar 26 2017
Well Bill never got to express any depth or humanity since he didn't play that version of Lucario. If he lightened the voice and received some good direction, he could pull it off.

He can get a little gruff in the speaking voice, but I think his yells sounded pretty spot-on.
said at 10:39 PM on Sun Mar 26 2017
I still don't feel Bill was a good fit for Lucario, personally, his rendition of the role is just to gravelly and monster-like for me to connect with it, in any way. As for his yells, they sound a lot more rough and gruff than Sean's ever did to me, but I can see your point in receiving better direction, would've led to a more tolerable performance from him.

For me, though, this is Sean Schemmel's best role in the Pokemon franchise, and he brought a depth and sincerity that Bill Rogers' simply failed to deliver in his portrayal.

Changing to Bill he was better in the anime also Sean wasn't that great it was sorta okay here if very stereotypical loner voice but in Smash 4 when he has to be more aggressive it's very forced wherelse Bill in general is more natural

I really blame Tom Wayland's direction (or rather, lack thereof) for what happened to Sean's take in Smash 4, honestly. As we saw in the Movie, Sean is capable of much better as Lucario (then again, that goes back to (imo) better voice direction given to him by a different staff altogether).

That said, I'd rather Smash 4 Sean Lucario, than Brawl Bill Lucario, despite that, because when I compare the two clips there, Bill just goes overly gruff and deep with the voice. Sean is still a bit gruff admittedly, but he's not to the point of severe constipation, which is where I feel Bill goes with the character.

1. Bill Rogers
2. Sean Schemmel

Sean was decent in his movie, but he seemed unfitting in Smash 4.

Sean in the Movie is better than Bill or himself in the game, imo, he got to flesh out Lucario more beyond simply a warrior type of character, but as they say, to each their own.
said at 5:43 PM on Sun Mar 27 2016
I personally haven't seen the movie, while I played Brawl a LOT. I'm more used to Bill. I agree he's a little forced, but his screams (I.e. not talking) are exactly how I picture Lucario sounding like. But, I completely understand preferring Sean.
said at 6:41 PM on Sun Mar 27 2016
I definitely recommend checking out the Movie: Sean's a lot better in that as Lucario than he was in SSB4, to say the least.

Understandable: I suppose it depends on if you're looking for more of a fighter or a more faceted character in Lucario's case here where your preference lies on this compare.

Sean Schemmel's Lucario sounds deep, mysterious and badass. Like a nice mix of his Batman and Nobody voices. It just fits Lucario's personality to a tee.

Bill Rogers has a disadvantage since he voices Lucario in a fighting game, it sort of worked for in Brawl but I'm really glad Sean reprise for Smash 4. Bill works far better as the non-English speaking Lucarios that appear every so often in the anime.

My vote goes to Sean.

This one goes to Schemmel seeing as the movie fleshes out the character alot more, expressing the various different emotions. The performance itself has a mysterious feel to it(basing that off f his sound clip)

1. Sean Schemmel: Schemmel was the most distinct sounding and was pretty good with his emotions.
2. Bill Rogers: Sounds lforced and angry and also sounds like he needs to drink some prune juice. I prefer he voice a non-speaking Lucario.

Sean Schemmel- Sean gave Lucario a lot of depth, expressing a variety of emotions while also sounding mysterious and weathered as the character, and I'm really glad he's been allowed to reprise the role recently.

Bill Rogers- Bill just comes off as constantly angry and one dimensional as Lucario, even sounding pretty constipated at times, though to be fair he was voicing him in a fighter, but the execution was pretty bad.

Sean was more memorable and less rough and deep sounding: had a gruff tone but was smooth with it. His Lucario voice works for both a Movie and a fighter like SSB4, to me.

Bill was too deep and rough sounding, on the other hand: works for a fighter I guess, but can't picture that working with Lucario in that Movie at all.

@HeroRises143 To put some context on it, though, there's a lot more of an intense situation in Smash than in the 8th movie. Most of the situations Lucario was in were non-action mellow situations. Smash features him constantly grunting and roaring since he's fighting.

@HeroRises143 Forgot to mention, Bill's voiced all Lucarios in the anime as well since DP, they might be better references for his calmer voice. And... He doesn't get to fully talk as much, so maybe with some practice he could have been better.

But yeah, still going with Sean on this one.

I wouldn't Sean Schemell's voice to be EXACTLY the same after 9 years. It sounds better if you listen to it from the SSB4 sound test, where nothing drowns it out. At least he's back.

Sean Schemmel: he actually made Lucario sound like something more than a gangster that's constipated and is going to beat you up for your change, unlike Bill Rogers, while also bringing actual humanity to the role and making you feel pity for Lucario in the 8th Movie, as opposed to thinking of Lucario as a dumb thuggish grunt.

I'm glad Sean's reprising the role in the next SSB installment: Bill was awful in this role (he was no better in the actual Anime with his "RAH-RAGH-UGH") and it's for the best Sean is taking over again in the next SSB Video Game.

Obviously Sean is the best, he sounds serious yet can be light-hearted also which is fitting considering Lucario is not only a wise warrior but a protector too. A perfect balance.

Needless to say I like Bill Rogers's voice and it works for a fighting game, but it sounds too gruff and more like a thug, like someone who would rather "take" a life rather then protect a live, which is the whole point of Lucario's character. At least in my opinion. :-)

@Torak To be fair, I can't see where the light-hearted part comes into play. I completely agree that Sean was better than Bill, but Lucario was never "light-hearted"; if anything, he was arrogant, condescending, and had a terrible temper.

It's really weird that they're comparing two different voice actors when one has had a larger speaking role, and the other one has not.
Still, Sean Schemmel all the way. He did great as Lucario; got the cold tone in his voice down perfectly, and I never could have guessed that he had voiced Lucario.

I think Sean Schemmel fits the role of Lucario best. It seems to be so much more relatable and down-to-Earth than what Bill Rogers' take seems like it does.

Sean Schemmel just seems more...evocative. Like he has more range to capture more emotions as opposed to being relegated to being adept at one emotion like Bill seems to be here.

I guess what I'll say is:

1- Sean Schemmel
2- Bill Rogers

Sean is much more natural, and brought a certain touch of humanity that really stands out. It's as if Lucario was more of a real person than a Pokemon, which reflects how the events of M08 had taken place before Poke Balls were invented (so that they were treated more as equals instead of confining them into those cramped capsules).

In stark contrast, Bill doesn't sound anything human. In fact, after listening closely to him some more, I think his voice was sfx-modified to sound like that. Regardless, he's a decent replacement I suppose.
