Voice Compare » Pokemon » Giovanni

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Giovanni with sound clips and images.
Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket and he was once the Gym Leader of Viridian City. His favorite Pokemon is his Persain and through his funding was the creation of Mewtwo possible. Giovanni's goals are to capture rare and strong Pokemon to sell for profit and use for personal gain. His ultimate goal to take over the world using Pokemon.

In the English dub version of the Pokemon anime by 4Kids Entertainment Giovanni was first voiced by Ted Lewis. When Pokemon USA dubbed the anime after 4Kids lost the license, Giovanni was recast and Craig Blair voiced the character.

However Ted Lewis eventually returned to the role and currently voices Giovanni once again.

In the Pokemon Origins TV Special Giovanni was voiced by Jamieson Price.

Craig Blair was one of the better replacement voices in the new dub, but IMO Ted Lewis has a much better voice for Giovanni.

Jamieson Price's voice for Giovanni is much different than both of the others and I personally love it. In some ways I think he's even better than Ted Lewis. His voice is perfect for a man of authority.

Jamieson Price is the best Giovanni! dont really care about the other two

I honestly can't choose between Ted and Jamieson. Both Giovannis are fairly different interpretations, so I think they both fit in their own way.

I'll think of Ted as the hammy, orange-suit wearing Giovanni, and Jamieson as the calculating and wanting something more Giovanni.

1-Jamieson Price: He sounds Perfect for Giovanni!.How a team leader should sound.Serious, cold and authoritive

2-Ted Lewis-He sounds pretty great but the accent he is doing(british),IMO sounds completly unffiting for giovanni.

3-Craig Blair-No,just no.He sounds too campy for giovanni.

3 Craig- However this one is really mediocore

@HienFan I love the main version of Giovanni in the Kanto and Unova arcs, but he's just kinda there in all the other arcs.
said at 12:10 AM on Wed Dec 10 2014
@Galactic_Cyrus I never seen the episodes on Kanto with him other than the time the team got stranded yet so...

Though I did see Hoenn's Giovanni and he was duuuullll
said at 1:42 PM on Wed Dec 10 2014
@Galactic_Cyrus In Kanto he was built up by being kept in shadows with his voice altered before we finally saw him in person, after which we learned of his involvement in Mewtwo's creation, which led to both the first movie and the "Mewtwo Returns" special, the latter of which featured Giovanni as the main villain. In Unova he was an outright villain as well, leading Team Rocket in a conspiracy to take over the region, the climax of which finally brought he and Ash face to face.

He did nothing much in Johto, but Hoenn was when he really started becoming this dull recurring character used as the butt of jokes.

If you were to ask me a few years ago who the better Giovanni was, I clearly would have said Ted. He brings much to the role.

And yet, I really like Jamieson Price's take on Giovanni. While he doesn't get the funny material, (well, Origins Giovanni was meant to be a more likeable yet untrusting than funny) he really played the part well. Whenever I play the games, I can just hear his voice in everything Giovanni says.

Ted is the best for his performance working as both the evil leader of TR, but also as the leader who gets upset and frustrated with JJM/KMN as well. 10/10

Jamieson is second best with his performance exuding an excellent man of authority vibe as well as a very serious vibe, but Ted takes it for me as I don't think Price could pull off the more comedic scenes with Giovanni as well, honestly. 9/10

Craig was just...no, absolutely not. Very forced, awkward, and just plain unfitting, sorry. 1/10

Nostalgia has nothing to do with why I picked Ted Lewis, personally, but I do think Price fits MUCH better than Craig Blair ever did.

@Shiny Raticate
I would have to disagree: while Jamieson works for the serious, dignified leader Giovanni, he wouldn't work so well with Giovanni's comedic scenes where he gets upset or frustrated-- Ted still wins it. The clear worst is Craig Blair, though, I'll give you that.

First place for me goes to Ted Lewis who has this very awesome superiority in his voice for Giovanni and it fits the character very well. It was a very distinct and unique performance on his part, and even though his Yami Bakura slipped in at times, it really wasn't a big deal as he dropped that tone with the character. He's the funniest as well, and he had the most charisma in his voice for Giovanni. I have to give it to him: he's fantastic-- he has shown the most range and potential with the character.

My second favorite is actually Jamieson Price now. He was THE standout from the English dub of The Origin, and he gave Giovanni this very professional, authoritative, head of authority voice that others have mentioned that really complements Giovanni perfectly. I have to say it is very similar to his Oikawa voice, though, but he really won me over here, and he's a very close second. I'm really torn between him and Lewis for my favorite, but for some reason I feel like if Jamieson Price played Giovanni in sillier moments, it wouldn't have worked as well as Ted Lewis did. He is still exceptional, though!

Craig Blair is in a very distant third place. He...was very forced most of the time in the role, and I can't say he did a good impression of Ted Lewis at all. This clip from DP002 is honestly hands down his best performance as Giovanni. The rest of the time, especially in "Malice in Wonderland!"...Craig Blair's impression was downright horrendous and sounded nothing like Ted Lewis' Giovanni: I didn't like him in the role.

Talk about Digimon Pokemon crossover. Giovanni's voice actor for Pokemon the Origins also played as Oikawa from Digimon Adventure 02. I knew I recognized that voice tone from somewhere.

Ted - Hammy, but love it!
Craig - Identical to Ted's.
Jamieson - I quite like his Giovanni voice!
said at 1:13 PM on Fri Dec 6 2013
@voicefan945 Craig is in no way identical to Ted. He barks and snarls every one of his lines, not sounding nearly as smooth as Ted's voice. And the attempt at imitating Lewis' fancy diction was WAY off - the way he talks like "I have wanted to set up shop there for a very long time. Do your best! THAT is what I was aFraid of!" just sounds really really forced.

I forgot how good Ted was, a somewhat subtle performance that's also entertaining.

Jamieson was also good, he's more likable while still having a certain untrusting air to him.

Don't know who to go with.

Ted Lewis is very entertaining and memorable. I'm glad that he came back to the show. Despite this, he never really got to be anything other than the bad guy in charge of other bad guys. For what little he had, Jamieson Price got to show a greater character range and I'm changing votes to him.

I like that Origins humanized Giovanni while Ted Lewis just plays him as being evil for the sake of it.
said at 7:50 AM on Thu Dec 5 2013
@pete Not really "evil for the sake of it" so much as being a diabolical Bond Villain-esque criminal mastermind and reveling in it, whereas Price plays him more like an evil businessman, which is how that version was written as.

Ted Lewis is a good pick for Giovanni. He's menacing, but can be comedic if the situation calls for it, which thankfully is very rarely.

Craig Blair...just forgettable.

My favorite, though, is Jamieson Price. Yes, I've heard it in other productions, but here, it fits extraordinarily well. His voice is perfect for heads of authority, and he did give dimension to the character that I rarely got from Lewis.

In the end, I'm going for Price, but Lewis is still very close.

Jamieson Price is very good, but not nearly as memorable and entertaining as Ted Lewis. As bad as 4Kids was with other things, they WERE consistently good with casting "memorable" voices for their shows, and Pokemon is definitely the best example. With that said, Jameison is one of the better voices in Origins, and he does sound more distinct than the rest. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed his performance, even it's a little generic. Craig Blar's Lewis imitation was very good, but still missing a lot of what makes Lewis' voice so powerful and entertaining to listen to, and maybe a tad amateurish and "light" in a couple spots.
said at 7:59 AM on Thu Dec 5 2013
@PurpleWarrior13 The main thing that's distracting about Price is that it's Oikawa from Digimon Adventure 02. I have a hard time getting that other "mon" series out of my head when I listen to it. Ted Lewis was more distinctive as the character.
said at 4:41 AM on Wed Jul 9 2014
@PurpleWarrior13 Say that to some of the Funimation fan(memorable voices)

I personally find that they are pretty good at coming up with voices

That said Jamieson is that voice that will always stick on my head
said at 8:55 PM on Sun Dec 1 2013
I personally enjoy the much more serious voice acting of Pokemon Origins much more than the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" style of the main series. I'm glad it lasted as long as it did, mainly to serve as a brief change of pace to throw back to the original Game Boy games (and promote X and Y at the end). Basically, I like Jamieson Price best because he seems more like a guy doing evil as a business rather than because it's what bad guys do.

Ted Lewis was BRILLIANT as Giovanni. He had this charismatic air of menace, so deep and smooth, that he truly brought the character to life, just like what he did with Yami Bakura... Craig Blair sounds too gruf, grouchy and thug-like. REALLY was elated when they brought back Ted Lewis to take over the role.

So... what did you guys think of Jamieson Price's rendition from Origins?

@Lion's Edge Same here. Ted and his voice will always BE Giovanni for me, but I'm starting to try hearing Jamieson Price in my head for the character too now whenever I play the games or read the "Pokemon Adventures" manga and it fits just as well.

@Galactic_Cyrus WOW... that is ironic, actually...

For me, Jamieson Price's Giovanni is best for the games and the "Special/Adventures" manga as well. Of course, Ted Lewis is the anime Giovanni, no doubt about it, though...

Speaking of which, an anime adaptation of one of the "Special/Adventures" installments would be pretty cool, thinking about it.
said at 9:54 AM on Sun Dec 8 2013
@Lion's Edge Well Ted Lewis is still my default Giovanni voice that I hear when I play his game dialogue and read the manga. I'm just saying that I can also try hearing Price's voice reading those lines and it also works. For Craig Blair, I only hear him as Petrel impersonating Giovanni. "What do you mean I don't sound like him?" XD
said at 8:35 AM on Mon Nov 25 2013
Craig was a complete miscast. Why they even replaced Ted in the first place, I have no idea. He is despicably excellent as Giovanni! :-)

This one is so one-sided it's sort of funny. Ted Lewis has a certain charm and elegance in his voice for Giovanni. The voice itself started off sounding exactly like how it does in the clip: deep, smooth, and with a faint posh Italian accent. It changed by "Mewtwo Returns" so that it's now more like his Yami Bakura voice, only less British. But either way, Ted Lewis puts calculating menace and sophistication into the performance. He sounds very naturally intimidating and villainous.

Craig Blair...sorry, but this was a horrendous attempt at an impression. He had none of the charm, menace, sophistication or nuance of Lewis' rendition. He just sounds like what the character had become at that point: a grouchy, thug-like employer. All the lines are laughably delivered too. Just awful. It's truly a blessing that he only voiced the character in two episodes before they got Ted Lewis back to do the character in his rightful voice.
said at 10:42 PM on Sat Jul 27 2013
Ted Lewis, no doubt, makes Giovanni sound like a real villain. Craig Blair makes him sound like an unpopular grump. Rehiring Ted Lewis for Giovanni was a wise move for Pokemon USA. If only they did that for the other originals.
said at 3:37 PM on Sat Jun 8 2013
Ted Lewis sounds colder and more intimidating so my vote goes for him. Craig Blair does a decent imitation but he sounded a bit rougher to me, which doesn't fit Giovanni so well in my opinion.

I have to admit, this one's actually pretty close to a tie. Craig Blair was definitely one of the better performances in the TPCi dub, sounding sinister yet silky smooth (gotta love alliteration!). Unfortunately, he does come off as rather generic for the most part, on top of not even bothering with the accent. Kind of a shame he didn't voice the character very long though, I'm sure he would've improved over time.

As for Ted Lewis, his accent IS quite inconsistent; sometimes it's Italian, other times it's American. In the end though, he still gets my vote, as he also sounds quite menacing, but a bit more natural than Craig.
said at 1:24 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@pokemastanumba1 I think Lewis was initially going for a fancy Italian accent for the character. But starting with "Mewtwo Returns", he changed the voice into a less British version of his Yami Bakura voice. Either way, I think he's fantastic in the role.

Hopefully with Best Wishes (Isshu region) Pokemon USA brings back as many former voice actors as possible.
