Pokemon Pokemon

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Giovanni with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Pokemon

Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket and he was once the Gym Leader of Viridian City. His favorite Pokemon is his Persain and through his funding was the creation of Mewtwo possible. Giovanni's goals are to capture rare and strong Pokemon to sell for profit and use for personal gain. His ultimate goal to take over the world using Pokemon.

In the English dub version of the Pokemon anime by 4Kids Entertainment Giovanni was first voiced by Ted Lewis. When Pokemon USA dubbed the anime after 4Kids lost the license, Giovanni was recast and Craig Blair voiced the character.

However Ted Lewis eventually returned to the role and currently voices Giovanni once again.

In the Pokemon Origins TV Special Giovanni was voiced by Jamieson Price.

In the Pokemon Generations shorts Giovanni was voiced by Richard Epcar.

I love Ted Lewis' Bond villain take the most, although Jamieson Price's suave version is great too. Epcar and Blair lack any charisma in the role.

Ted Lewis and Jamieson Price both tie as my favourite... both of them are very boss-like and Jamieson a little more experienced.

Richard Epcar was okay for the most part but Giovanni didn't do all that much in Generations. His first appearance was basically a cameo and his second was in a argument with Silver. He did pretty decent in that episode.

And not too much of a fan of Craig Blair's performance. He sounds off and rather growly at points.

I'm sticking with Ted Lewis, really, he makes Giovanni sound very eloquent, dignified, but yet also very merciless and cunning all at the same time. Here's a better example of his performance, though, I must say it's impressive how boss-like he sounds:

Of the other three, Jamieson Price is the only one who I feel doesn't come off as either completely wooden or stiff in the part (context or no context, I feel Richard Epcar frankly can do much better than this rather rigid take- his Myotismon voice would've absolutely fit the part more, as it's also considerably less gruff/more smooth) or an almost caricatured hit and miss impression of Lewis' performance (Craig Blair), but I just find the accent Ted's has to make him stand out a bit more from the crowd. Price would be my second favorite, though, it's a close call between Price & Lewis in the end to me.

It's a Pity that David Kaye doesn't work on Canadian sourced anime Dubs, especially since if he was working with Ocean Group on a Dub of a Pokemon Anime, he would be my first choice for a new Giovanni voice.

I think my two favorite portrayals are Jamieson Price and Richard Epcar, and they're tied for me. Ted Lewis and Craig Blair did fine in the role, but I like Jamieson and Richards portrayals more because to me they make Giovanni sound more experienced and authoritative (in a couple of different ways of course). That's not to say that Ted and Craig don't sound experienced and/or authoritative, but they make him sound more like a lower commander of Team Rocket rather than Giovanni himself.

With the addition of Richard Epcar, I'd like to update my thoughts:
Personally, he would be 3rd place (with Ted Lewis as 1st; Jamieson Price as 2nd and Craig Blair as 4th). Epcar...was a bit underwhelming. While it is true that he didn't have much screen time, he could do much better. His acting was stilted and I found his voice a tad too rough for the character. Honestly I would not have minded if he reused his Myotismon voice.

(Side note: Am I the only one who realises that Richard Epcar and Jamieson Price, who both played Digimon villains [Etemon & Myotismon for Epcar; Yukio Oikawa for Price], played Giovanni as well?)

Giovanni doesn't get to actually do much in Generations. He's basically a cameo in his first appearance and the next time we see him is an argument with Silver where he's deliberately supposed to be portrayed as detached and distant. I don't think that's any fault of Richard's. Stuff like that is really important to keep in mind when judging an actor's portrayal of a character - the actual context behind what they're doing and why they are acting the way they are.
said at 11:59 AM on Wed Mar 15 2017
To be fair, Richard's acting did get better in his second appearance, but I feel like Ted & Jamieson just had more to work with in the end, and offered two pretty equally valid takes, that work well in very different ways (still have a soft spot for Ted's myself, though).

At any rate, I feel Richard's take is a better fit than Craig's was, if that helps- at least he wasn't doing a hit-or-miss impression of another VA, and tried to make the role his own of sorts.

Personally, I still think Ted is the best, myself- there's just something very interesting about his Mafia Boss like portrayal with the cultured accents he used that seems to fit Giovanni so perfectly to me. I don't think it sounds fake at all, either, it just sounds so...menacing and intelligent, personally. Although honestly, I think Lewis peaked with his Giovanni in "Mewtwo Returns," so I feel the clip he has now doesn't show him at his best.

As for the others, I understand the appeal of Jamieson as a man of authority with a suave, deep voice for his take on Giovanni, and I would argue his take on the character is easily the strongest performance in the English dub of Pokemon Origins for characters with previous English voices, but I just feel like it's not as...interesting to listen to as Ted- something about it is lacking distinctiveness to me.

Richard Epcar...rather stiff acting and delivery here in his first episode with Giovanni, and even though the acting improves in his second appearance as the character, I still feel the voice is just too deep as well as gruff for the part, he was a bit off here.

Craig this clip from DP002, he was okay at impersonating Lewis, but in the actual show...he was very, very off, sometimes sounding very growly, rough, and almost agitated at times.

In the end, I still have to side with the majority here, but again my ranking is:

1. Ted Lewis
2. Jamieson Price
3. Richard Epcar
4. Craig Blair

Richard was well cast, but the direction wasn't on his side, at least at first, but he got much better by the end of the clip.

It's close between three of them (Craig could've been better with decent direction), but I still think Jamieson owns this role

1. Ted Lewis - His voice for Giovanni has the most flavour and character, IMO. He strikes a nice balance between intimidating and comical, and the english accent he does is also a rather nice touch! (Although he toned it down in the later seasons IIRC)

2. Jamieson Price - He sounds awesome as usual. Giving him a naturally authoritative "businessman" voice. I just ultimately prefer Ted's take on the character for being more "distinctive" like Galactic_Cyrus said.

3. Craig Blair - I remember kind of writing his take off completely in my other comment. But listening to it again, he isn't AS bad in the role as I remember. He certainly sounds rather close to Lewis, and who knows? Perhaps with more time in the role and better voice direction he could've truly nailed it. But alas his performances in the few episodes he did play Giovanni in are rather weird-sounding...
said at 6:37 PM on Fri Mar 10 2017
Actually, Ted's accent in the later seasons was English (including his TPCi Era stuff), initially it was Italian in earlier seasons (either way, he's more unique and distinctive so that gives him the edge for me over Jamieson, too).

@WrightWay I think you're right there actually. But yes, I ultimately feel feel the same. He gives the a certain "posh" sound that just can't be beat IMO.

3. Craig Blair/Richard Epcar - Epcar is a FANTASTIC casting choice on paper. Unfortunately he didn't receive the best direction however. I still enjoyed his take for what it was, but like Craig Blair's, it definitely could've been better. I

I'm gonna post about the 4Kids voice here as it's been quite a while I said anything, I do not really like anime Giovanni at all but Ted did his best and he had a decent voice, Craig was kinda miscasted from what I heard of his work that he is more comfortable with softer voices(and again direction at that time also probably worsen it)

1. Ted Lewis
Ted Lewis nails the intimidating personality and even without the "demonic filter" that he had in the earlier episodes, he still sounds like someone you don't want to mess with. I'm kind of sad that he dropped the accent after a while, but then I realised that would make his voice too similar to Yami Bakura.
2. Jamieson Price
He sounds more collected and serious and has an "affable evil" tone to his voice to match his characterisation in Origins. I'd say he was super close to tying with Ted Lewis.
3. Craig Blair
Very bland and he sounds more disinterested than evil. Again, the voice direction likely killed the performance.

1. Ted Lewis = Jamieson Price:

This is a tough comparison since on the one hand, you have Ted Lewis, who nails the role of the Anime Giovanni, sounding very sinister and slick, as well as like what you'd expect a crime boss to sound like, and his accent actually makes his performance unique.

On the other hand, you have Jamieson Price, who nails Origins Giovanni being the suave, charismatic crime boss who mends his ways at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, I'll call it a tie between Lewis and Price, but give my vote to Lewis as I slightly prefer the accent he gives the character: I feel it makes him stand out and sounds really unique. Whatever the case, both are fantastic performances in my book.

2. Craig Blair:

This was very inconsistent. Sometimes (like in the clip) you have him doing a pretty seamless imitation of Ted Lewis, but other times, he did this very stilted young man putting on a gruff voice take, and it was jarring.

3. Richard Epcar (Not here yet, but he voiced him in Generations Episode 2):

I've honestly never seen a more wooden and flat performance from him in my life, which is a shame, since he's actually a great voice actor. Granted, he only said two lines, those being, "Team Rocket will never fall. All Pok-uh-mon exist solely for the use of Team Rocket," but he says it in the most monotone way imaginable. His voice is OK, but the acting behind his performance could not be more stiff.
said at 11:15 AM on Fri Oct 7 2016
I'm going to bump Richard Epcar up a slot now, since I think he sounds better in Episode 5 than he did in Episode 2, but my vote stays with Ted Lewis (I'm not sure why I like the accented Giovanni most, but I do). Richard is still too gruff & deep relative to Ted & Jamieson, though, but at least he's not completely monotone like earlier.

My new opinion is now:

1. Ted Lewis
2. Jamieson Price
3. Richard Epcar
4. Craig Blair

I didn't know Ted came back to Giovanni?
said at 2:47 PM on Thu Mar 10 2016
I can answer this.

Yes, Ted came back as Giovanni in Season 11 in the DP episode, "The Thief That Keeps on Thieving" in the English dub. TPCi/DuArt really only let Ted Lewis reprise Giovanni, Mike Pollock reprise Contesta, and Sean Schemmel reprise Lucario (in SSB4 only, NOT in the Anime, where they kept Bill as him). If you want to get REALLY technical about it, they did let Erica Schroeder voice an Older Joy in 1 filler episode of BW: Adventures in Unova, but NOT the younger Joy on a daily basis, like she did in the 4Kids dub in the last few seasons (due to Megan Hollingshead moving to Los Angeles at the time in 4Kids' case).

Everyone else did not get the same opportunity to reprise their roles, unlike these four, who did. They were/are either essentially blacklisted from the dub (for no real reason if you ask me), were not asked to do so (as is evident with Darren Dunstan as Sukizo), and/or flat-out told "no" when asking to reprise their roles (as evident by Stuart Zagnit asking to voice Professor Oak again during the BW dub or Maddie Blaustein asking about voicing Meowth again, before her untimely death during the DP dub when she voiced a Chatot once in a Mystery Dungeon Special).

Oh this is a tough one.

Both Ted Lewis and Jamieson Price bring an excellent amount of charisma and presence to Giovanni.

Ted Lewis's Giovanni is basically the untouchable James Bond villain, despite mentioned so much he's rarely seen and when he does appear, it's a big freaking deal. I think the accents Ted used for Giovanni give him a lot of class and sophistication while still sounding diabolical. While I feel the anime Giovanni is way too underutilized, I still feel his voice and presence is still memorable.

Jamieson Price's Giovanni is basically the original games Giovanni but could also work for the Adventures Manga just the same. He does sound like a charismatic villain leader and the passion he had in the role was excellent, I didn't like the Origins dub much but Price was the major standout of the dub as Jamieson usually is in most dubs. Though I've always imagined Jamieson Price voicing Byron in D/P/Pt personally myself.

Craig Blair lacks any class or sophistication that Giovanni needs, his voice is goofy even for TCPI's dub.

Luckily that recast was temporary and they brought Ted back.

In the end I'm going to give it to Ted since he's what I'm more used to but Jamieson is still phenomenal in the role.

Outside of Ted and Jamieson I think Graham McTavish could also make for an excellent Giovanni.

It's a tie between Lewis and Price, though I picked Lewis, only because I really think he's not getting enough credibility nowadays, but he sounded better in the 4Kids dub than TPCi's, he's sort of lost it since XY003.

As for Blair, he's really a poor man's Lewis, enough said.

1) Jamieson Price = Ted Lewis (4Kids)
2) Ted Lewis (TPCi)
3) Craig Blair

Can't vote on this one: Ted and Jamieson are tied in first for me, with Craig at an okay second. Ted brings one portrayal that's very interesting to the role: like some Italian Mafia Boss, which fits pretty well for the character, while Jameison brings a Yakuza Boss type portrayal.

Ted Lewis' Giovanni from that second Mewtwo Movie NCZ mentioned was probably at his peak, and I think that voice was an equivalent for Jamieson Price's take on Giovanni (Why is it wrong to have an accent, though? James has a British accent in both English dubs, and that worked perfectly for him).

However, in the recent XY Series (namely the third episode), Ted Lewis' Giovanni now sounds very stilted and forced and his performance has declined in quality (though to be fair that's been a problem since the switch).

Jamieson Price's Giovanni has a nice cold air of authority around it while also sounding very commanding and smooth as well, so he gets my vote, but I'd like to see Jamieson get the chance to voice Giovanni in the main Anime in comedic scenes just to see how that contrasts with Ted Lewis' take.

As for Craig Blair, he sounded nothing like Ted Lewis as Giovanni to me, so he's in dead last place.

said at 1:42 PM on Wed Dec 10 2014
@Galactic_Cyrus In Kanto he was built up by being kept in shadows with his voice altered before we finally saw him in person, after which we learned of his involvement in Mewtwo's creation, which led to both the first movie and the "Mewtwo Returns" special, the latter of which featured Giovanni as the main villain. In Unova he was an outright villain as well, leading Team Rocket in a conspiracy to take over the region, the climax of which finally brought he and Ash face to face.

He did nothing much in Johto, but Hoenn was when he really started becoming this dull recurring character used as the butt of jokes.

First place for me goes to Ted Lewis who has this very awesome superiority in his voice for Giovanni and it fits the character very well. It was a very distinct and unique performance on his part, and even though his Yami Bakura slipped in at times, it really wasn't a big deal as he dropped that tone with the character. He's the funniest as well, and he had the most charisma in his voice for Giovanni. I have to give it to him: he's fantastic-- he has shown the most range and potential with the character.

My second favorite is actually Jamieson Price now. He was THE standout from the English dub of The Origin, and he gave Giovanni this very professional, authoritative, head of authority voice that others have mentioned that really complements Giovanni perfectly. I have to say it is very similar to his Oikawa voice, though, but he really won me over here, and he's a very close second. I'm really torn between him and Lewis for my favorite, but for some reason I feel like if Jamieson Price played Giovanni in sillier moments, it wouldn't have worked as well as Ted Lewis did. He is still exceptional, though!

Craig Blair is in a very distant third place. He...was very forced most of the time in the role, and I can't say he did a good impression of Ted Lewis at all. This clip from DP002 is honestly hands down his best performance as Giovanni. The rest of the time, especially in "Malice in Wonderland!"...Craig Blair's impression was downright horrendous and sounded nothing like Ted Lewis' Giovanni: I didn't like him in the role.

Wow! All I have to say is that Jamieson Price is easily one of the best performances from Origins, sounding a bit generic but still intimidating! Still prefer Ted though for sounding more memorable and more refined. :-)

As much as they're essentially different characters at heart, I'm going to give it to Jamieson Price.

Jamieson Price is very good, but not nearly as memorable and entertaining as Ted Lewis. As bad as 4Kids was with other things, they WERE consistently good with casting "memorable" voices for their shows, and Pokemon is definitely the best example. With that said, Jameison is one of the better voices in Origins, and he does sound more distinct than the rest. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed his performance, even it's a little generic. Craig Blar's Lewis imitation was very good, but still missing a lot of what makes Lewis' voice so powerful and entertaining to listen to, and maybe a tad amateurish and "light" in a couple spots.

@PurpleWarrior13 The main thing that's distracting about Price is that it's Oikawa from Digimon Adventure 02. I have a hard time getting that other "mon" series out of my head when I listen to it. Ted Lewis was more distinctive as the character.

@PurpleWarrior13 Say that to some of the Funimation fan(memorable voices)

I personally find that they are pretty good at coming up with voices

That said Jamieson is that voice that will always stick on my head

Honestly, I'd even say 4Kids' dub of Pokemon was much better than TPCi's in general. 4Kids surprisingly kept more of the Japanese BGM score intact than TPCi has, didn't have Team Rocket speaking in rhymes/alliteration or Ash in slang on a daily basis like TPCi does, and their openings were a lot longer and better composed to me. As things are nowadays, I can't even watch the dub without cringing at the sheer apathy and lack of effort put into its production.

I personally enjoy the much more serious voice acting of Pokemon Origins much more than the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" style of the main series. I'm glad it lasted as long as it did, mainly to serve as a brief change of pace to throw back to the original Game Boy games (and promote X and Y at the end). Basically, I like Jamieson Price best because he seems more like a guy doing evil as a business rather than because it's what bad guys do.

Ted Lewis was BRILLIANT as Giovanni. He had this charismatic air of menace, so deep and smooth, that he truly brought the character to life, just like what he did with Yami Bakura... Craig Blair sounds too gruf, grouchy and thug-like. REALLY was elated when they brought back Ted Lewis to take over the role.

So... what did you guys think of Jamieson Price's rendition from Origins?
said at 7:52 AM on Thu Dec 5 2013
@Lion's Edge Jamieson Price was also fantastic as his Giovanni. Not Ted Lewis, but thankfully not Craig Blair either.

@Galactic_Cyrus I've personally gotta say that it is a tie for me between Jamieson Price and Ted Lewis. Both played different versions of Giovanni, and both did the job magnificently.

@Lion's Edge Same here. Ted and his voice will always BE Giovanni for me, but I'm starting to try hearing Jamieson Price in my head for the character too now whenever I play the games or read the "Pokemon Adventures" manga and it fits just as well.

@Galactic_Cyrus WOW... that is ironic, actually...

For me, Jamieson Price's Giovanni is best for the games and the "Special/Adventures" manga as well. Of course, Ted Lewis is the anime Giovanni, no doubt about it, though...

Speaking of which, an anime adaptation of one of the "Special/Adventures" installments would be pretty cool, thinking about it.

@Lion's Edge Well Ted Lewis is still my default Giovanni voice that I hear when I play his game dialogue and read the manga. I'm just saying that I can also try hearing Price's voice reading those lines and it also works. For Craig Blair, I only hear him as Petrel impersonating Giovanni. "What do you mean I don't sound like him?" XD

Craig was a complete miscast. Why they even replaced Ted in the first place, I have no idea. He is despicably excellent as Giovanni! :-)

This one is so one-sided it's sort of funny. Ted Lewis has a certain charm and elegance in his voice for Giovanni. The voice itself started off sounding exactly like how it does in the clip: deep, smooth, and with a faint posh Italian accent. It changed by "Mewtwo Returns" so that it's now more like his Yami Bakura voice, only less British. But either way, Ted Lewis puts calculating menace and sophistication into the performance. He sounds very naturally intimidating and villainous.

Craig Blair...sorry, but this was a horrendous attempt at an impression. He had none of the charm, menace, sophistication or nuance of Lewis' rendition. He just sounds like what the character had become at that point: a grouchy, thug-like employer. All the lines are laughably delivered too. Just awful. It's truly a blessing that he only voiced the character in two episodes before they got Ted Lewis back to do the character in his rightful voice.

Ted Lewis, no doubt, makes Giovanni sound like a real villain. Craig Blair makes him sound like an unpopular grump. Rehiring Ted Lewis for Giovanni was a wise move for Pokemon USA. If only they did that for the other originals.

Ted Lewis sounds colder and more intimidating so my vote goes for him. Craig Blair does a decent imitation but he sounded a bit rougher to me, which doesn't fit Giovanni so well in my opinion.

Ted Lewis sounds the best of the two. He also gives Giovanni a little bit an italien accent.

I have to admit, this one's actually pretty close to a tie. Craig Blair was definitely one of the better performances in the TPCi dub, sounding sinister yet silky smooth (gotta love alliteration!). Unfortunately, he does come off as rather generic for the most part, on top of not even bothering with the accent. Kind of a shame he didn't voice the character very long though, I'm sure he would've improved over time.

As for Ted Lewis, his accent IS quite inconsistent; sometimes it's Italian, other times it's American. In the end though, he still gets my vote, as he also sounds quite menacing, but a bit more natural than Craig.

@pokemastanumba1 I think Lewis was initially going for a fancy Italian accent for the character. But starting with "Mewtwo Returns", he changed the voice into a less British version of his Yami Bakura voice. Either way, I think he's fantastic in the role.

Both are pretty bad. I have always imagine Giovanni with voice of mafia boss (or something like that), not voice of Apu from Simpsons

Hmm, I don't remember Ted Lewis's Giovanni having that accent. Did he drop it after a while? It's been a while since I saw Mewtwo Returns, but I seem to recall he had an American accent in that movie.

You can always send a letter or leave a phone message.

They're harder to ignore than just emails which can be deleted easily.

I believe there's an organization called

"Save Ash Ketchum"

that can provide you with Pokemon USA contact info.

Hopefully with Best Wishes (Isshu region) Pokemon USA brings back as many former voice actors as possible.
