Captain James Hook

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Captain James Hook with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Peter Pan

Captain James Hook is the main antagonist of J.M. Barrie's play "Peter Pan" and its various adaptions. He is the captain of the Jolly Roger, a vessel that he sails throughout the seas of Neverland. He holds a strong grudge against Peter Pan that stems from an incident in which Pan removed Hook's right hand and fed it to a crocodile, a beast that stalks and torments Hook to this day.

Conreid can sound appropriately hammy and intimidating when he need be, but he can just as well become hysterically panicked and provide welcome comic relief. Burton does a pretty good vocal impression of Conreid, but given what he has to work with he never really gets the chance to give a performance as entertaining or potentially surpassing Conreid's. As for Curry, the different tone of the television series from Disney's adaptions means that Curry's performance lacks the comic edge of Conreid's, but he does sound suitably fierce as the more villainous Hook and hams it up quite nicely. While both Conreid and Curry play their versions of Hook well (with Burton doing a decent enough impression of Conreid), I'm leaning towards Conreid just a little more because his is simply the more fun performance.

In a panel, Matt Mercer said he was originally the voice for Captain Hook, he even recorded most of his lines before being replaced by Tom Hiddleston

Hans Conried's performance as Captain Hook is really classic. He strikes a great balance of gleeful hamminess and being sinister.

Corey Burton really does an excellent impression of Hans voice and performance.

Tim Curry is excellent for his take on Hook. He's a bit more villainous and menacing but he still brings a nice bit of comedy and hamminess in the role as he usually does with his roles.

Tom Hiddleston is sadly the weakest. He's a bit too plain sounding, I get that he's a younger Hook but I dunno he's missing the attitude the rest all had or at least should have some spades of the character he will eventually become. Still it's not a bad performance at all, it's really good in fact.

I'm going with Hans Conried but everyone else here is pretty good and enjoyable in the role too.

My vote goes to Tim Curry.

Hans Conried is decent, but while I usually prefer the original voices, Corey Burton gets my vote. He sounds absolutely sinister as Hook in this video, and I think I'm more used to hearing him as Hook since he's been voicing Hook in so many projects.

Tom Hiddleston is great as younger Hook, though he doesn't sound much like the older counterpart voiced by Conried and Burton.

I have mixed feelings towards Tim Curry's voice, so I can't say whether it's good or not.

Hans for sure. He conveys Hook's sinister, comical, and idiotic aspects all to perfection. As for the others, going strictly by those clips, it's had to make any definitive judgments, but Hans's first place position is safe with me.

Hans Conried for me.

Corey does a very good impression but I'd like to see the writers let him unleash Hook's darker side a bit more

Is that really Captain Hook(the 2014 dude)? that looks more like a glorified pretty fanart than a menacing pirate

Sorry but the other three are better

I'm disappointed with Tom, this is Tom "Loki" Hiddleton how is he not matching the energy of Hans or Curry?
It's not a bad villain voice but I can't listen to it and get hooked.

I agree with VctrBnsn that they are great at voicing Captain Hook.

I'm going with Hans since he made Captain Hook what he is: A menacing, iconic & memorable villain.

Tim is 2nd, Corey is 3rd & Tom is 4th. I seem to agree with the poll in this case.

@Ross123 Welp looks like ole Tim is third now...

Although in this case it's more like agree with which is older for now

@HienFan I don't think much of the ranks on the polls but sometimes I end up agreeing with the order of things.

But that's not the case here.

All four are great, and all in different ways. Hans is iconic, and Corey is a perfect replacement. Tim sounds like a more traditional pirate and it works very well, and Tom is always entertaining.

I love Tom Hiddleston and he is clearly having fun, but I can't help but to feel that he was miscast. Sure, this is younger version of the character, but there should still be something that reminds you about Conried (or even Burton) in his voice and/orspeech pattern.

I've always thought of Corey Burton as a perfect successor to Hans Conried as Captain Hook. However, I do think he should play Hook in a movie where the writing is willing to give him a much better chance to exploit his true potential to the character. It doesn't show much here, but with the right script, I believe he could go to great lengths with the role.

With that said, I do LOVE all three performances. Although for me, I think the one that stands out best for me [by mere inches] is Conried. I guess I'd say that Burton and Curry would tie for the runners-up.

My gosh, both Hans Conried and Tim Curry are positively brilliant. I haven't enough of Tim Curry to fairly judge, but I think I will go with Hans Conried because he could sound imposing himself as well as comical. Tim Curry is truly great was well, but from what I heard here his performance is a little more limited to being angry and menacing while Hans Conried does a little more.

Why isn't/aren't the Shrek version(s) of Captain Hook here? Too different?
said at 4:27 AM on Mon Jan 28 2013
@Dogman15 The Shrek version isn't considered an official incarnation of the character (even if he's included in the Character Generation page).

@CatsTuxedo And yet the Captain Hook of the Shrek universe gets different voices in each film. Oh well.

@Dogman15 He'd go in the Shrek VC then.

Hans Conried is absolute perfection! Tim Curry makes a GREAT villainous Hook as well. Burton did an OK impression of Conried, but it's not the "best" I've heard from him.

Hans Conried was brilliant as Hook and Corey Burton is equally brilliant in imitating him; that honestly has to be one of Burton's best vocal impressions ever.

Tim Curry is also one of the best Hooks ever, though.

Corey Burton does a great job as Captain Hook, both performance-wise and as a Hans Conried-sound-alike.
