Monkey D. Luffy

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Monkey D. Luffy with sound clips and images.
Franchise: One Piece

Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece anime & manga, Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Devil Fruit user of the Gum-Gum Fruit and the man who wants to be King of the Pirates.

Luffy isn't very intelligent but is very brave and views the world in a straightforward and simple manner. He has the highest bounty of the Straw Hat crew.

Luffy was first voiced by 4Kids voice actor Erica Schroeder. Next we have Colleen Clinkenbeard from Funimation Entertainment. Then there's the rare lesser known performance by Chuck Powers who was part of an English dub version by Odex Ltd.

I can't stand the character but regardless my vote goes to Colleen. Erica also did a great job with Luffy, despite the bad material and how infamous the 4Kids dub is. Chuck is a complete miscast.

I wouldn't vote for any of them. Yes, I'm probably one of the few people that would actually prefer an actual male to voice as Luffy, but seriously - Chuck's awful take is completely NOT how I would envision Luffy would sound if he were to be voiced by a male. Sean Michael Teague would be my pick, actually.

Both Erica and Colleen sounded way too raspy as Luffy - which seems to be resemblant of female performances on older males (like Shippuden Naruto).

I guess Colleen is the least worst take on Luffy out of the three, but she is far from being a favorite of mine. I honestly prefer her as younger male kids or adult women.

@MizukaS Very few male voices can match Luffy.
said at 7:58 AM on Sun Jan 14 2018
Not in my book. The ideal Luffy voice to me would be a tenor voice like Goku's.
said at 9:35 PM on Mon Jan 15 2018
@MizukaS I'm pretty sure Sean Schemmel's a baritone.
said at 1:26 AM on Tue Jan 16 2018
His Goku voice is tenor. Doesn't matter what his natural voice is. Not my point.

@MizukaS Fair enough. I'm sorry if I appeared unnecessarily dense.
said at 2:21 AM on Tue Jan 16 2018
It's fine. Sean's voice could drop to baritone though, as heard from his Lucario and Nail voices.

Out of these three, I think I like Clinkenbeard's performance the most, but I have to say that she can be a bit raspy to me.

I've been re-watching One Piece lately, so I think I will provide my thoughts on this comparison.

1. Colleen Clinkenbeard: Colleen is no doubt the best English voice for Luffy all things considered. Her performance fits the character's personality very well and her line delivery is usually top notch. At times the voice can sound very hoarse when she's shouting, but I'm sure it's not easy to emote like that while staying in character, so I can usually tolerate it. So that aside, she's nailed the role very well.

2. Erica Schroeder: Erica was not really a good fit for the character in general. She made Luffy sound like he's a few years younger than 17 (when the series started out), which is a bit of a downside in general. Performance-wise, she started out okay in the early episodes of the 4Kids dub, but as time went on, she became very grating to the ears with her obnoxious shouting and over-acting. At least when Colleen shouts, it is not over-the-top and forced like Erica did it. I know Erica is a good voice actress in general, but this is not one of her better roles.

3. Chuck Powers: Yeah...a pretty weak voice from the Singapore dub, which is to be expected in the case of their approach to One Piece. The voice itself could have been worse, however, so I won't be too critical on that. But Chuck's acting is pretty lifeless and awkward, so that is enough for me to put him at the bottom of my list.

 3 Shout Outs!
1. Colleen Clinkenbeard - She's by FAR the best english Luffy. She nails the emotional moments, the comedy moments. You name it. She's absolutely perfect in the role IMO.

2. Erica Schoeder - She was a great choice for Luffy too, and actually started out okay in the beginning of the show. But unfortunately her performance got worse as the dub went on. Due to other factors obviously. That being said I still think she's better than the other three though...

3. Andrew Francis - Out of the male VAs for Luffy? he's easily the best really. But weirdly enough, Luffy is one of the few times where I DO actually agree with the "this character shouldn't be voiced by a man" sentiment. That being said I suppose his voice was fitting enough, and perhaps could've worked out in the long run? We'll never know really.

4. Eric Vale - He sounds like he's trying to initiate Sean Schemmel's Goku. I... get what they were going for I guess. But it's for the best they went with Colleen once they got the rights to dub the series after 4Kids lost the license. Not a big fan of this take unfortunately.

5. Chuck Powers - To be fair though... I'd rather have Eric's take than this. I like the voice itself don't get me wrong, but even with better acting I don't think Chuck's voice would work for Luffy at ALL.

I heard his Funimation test dub voice somewhere, absolutely horrible, men should not voice Luffy EVER and not just Odex(though I thought Chuck was better of the two), Colleen was a much better fit(though still not super ideal to my ears)
said at 12:33 PM on Tue Feb 21 2017
The Ocean test dub voice was also pretty bad, but I agree, Eric Vale did not fit Luffy & neither did Andrew Francis- I can't believe both companies completely miscast those actors back then. This is why I'm glad the infamous 4Kids dub (as much as I think its hatred is deserved in every form in this particular case) came about first because whether I like it or not, Bella Hudson/Erica Schroeder's performance there allowed Colleen Clinkenbeard's to eventually show up with the rest of the current FUNi dub cast in 2007.
said at 4:32 AM on Sat Mar 4 2017
@WrightWay I don't think that dub was that bad, certainly better than Funimation test(Andrew did not fit either but at least it was a decent voice on it's own)
said at 1:33 AM on Mon Mar 6 2017
Well, if I was forced to choose, I would pick Andrew between those two as well like you, but like you said it's a decent voice...but on the wrong character.

Erica & Colleen were clearly better casting choices, so I feel like things worked out in the end for the best.

Colleen Clinkenbeard: It took me a few episodes to get used to Colleen's take, but once I did, it grew on me fast. It's a great voice for Luffy, and she never fails to deliver on the acting side of things either.
Erica Schroeder: I...actually like her Luffy voice. But I think it would fit better for kid! Luffy in a flashback. It's a bit too young-sounding.
Chuck Powers: It's interesting hearing Luffy voiced by a man. I've heard worse performances from him, but it's not that great either.

I actually sort of agree with TEOL for the character: none of Luffy's dub voices really do it for me the way Mayumi Tanaka does.

That being said, Colleen's clearly the best dub equivalent we've gotten so far, so I'll give my vote to her: if only she wasn't so raspy at times, then she'd really be a lot better.

Erica sounded too young and struggled with the screams as well, but at least she could've had a decent performance under better direction.

Chuck doesn't have the energy or voice for the part: I'd never guess that was Luffy listening to him, period.

I vote none. Japanese with English subs are best on One Peice for me.

Odex and 4Kids (2002 Dubs Non listed) I vote the worst though out of the bad bunch of English actors and Colleen I suppose was the best although still rubbish compareed to the Japanese one.

One Peice is a rare case where I just can't watch an English one because the original was that good voice acting wise that it makes these look like all jokers in comparision.

I don't think any of them are perfect but Colleen Clinkenbeard is the closest.

Colleen's take is a bit too gruff and raspy however her acting is great and gets all the emotions down nicely.

Erica Shroeder, her take had potential. Though it was very forced in many parts and her performance took a turn for the worst. It's a shame really.

Chuck Powers - There's a reason why Luffy is usually voiced by a woman. The voice doesn't work at all.

I've never watched the show in Japanese but I assume Mayumi Tanaka blows everyone right out of the water. Still Colleen is the closest to getting it right so I place my vote on her.

Personally if I had to pick a new voice for Luffy, I'd probably go with Debi Derryberry, I find Debi and Mayumi Tanaka sound rather similar, based off on Tanaka's other roles like her Koenma for example.

also I still find it mind-blowing that in the original test dub FUNimation did for One Piece, Eric Vale was Luffy. That just seems too out there of a casting choice.
said at 7:45 AM on Mon Jul 17 2017
@Autovolt Now that you mention it, had One Piece been dubbed in LA instead of Funimation, I could see Debi being the voice of Luffy.

1. Colleen Clinkenbeard: Colleen's Luffy is a wonderful performance, when she screams "I SLEPT SO GREAT!" I laugh my head off. Her performance is so full of life, at first in the cut dub and Romance Dawn arc she sounds a little raspy and throaty but by the Arlong arc she greatly improved.
2. Erica Schroeder: The voice isn't bad it is just affected by bad writing a lack of vocal direction. It starts out decent but by the Alabasta arc it is literally Schroeder shouting all her lines.
3. Chuck Powers: This rendition is very bad. For starters Luffy is supposed to sound like a 17 year old boy not a middle aged man and the script is not as good as it could be.

Colleen is the only one who managed to provide a good voice to the character while also having a balance with her acting.

Erica had a decent voice for the character, but her acting was just awful later on, and got really obnoxious as time went on.

Chuck Powers' voice is too reserved and subdued for the character, plus his acting is awful, too: the worst of both worlds.

 1 Shout Out!
1. Colleen Clinkenbeard: Granted her original work in the cut dub and "Romance Dawn" arc is a little throaty but by the "Arlong arc" she got into the character and she made him her own. She manages to capture Mayumi Tanaka's performance and give Luffy the right amount of energy without sounding like a hyperactive child.
2. Erica Schroeder: Schroeder started out okay but as the 4Kids dub progressed she took a massive nosedive and ended up shouting her lines and sounding incredibly throaty.
3. Chuck Powers: Umm. How can I put this positively? While I think Luffy being voiced by a male doesn't seem right he is a good voice but he lacks the energy of Clinkenbeard.

I saw more of Erica's performance recently,'s...not as bad as some of the other voices were in the 4Kids dub of One Piece to me, I'll say that much, but I think it really lacked range in emotion and sounded a bit too young.

It's better than Chuck, though, I'll say that.

I like Colleen Clinkenbeard the best, she fits the character's design and personality very well. Erica Schroeder was definitely not bad, she sounded fairly decent, but there were points where her voice got pretty annoying. And as for Chuck Powers, his voice is pretty meh, I don't honestly think it's bad in fact I actually like hearing Luffy with a man's voice, but he doesn't really sound hyperactive enough for the character.

I would actually like to hear the performance Eric Vale did for the character that he recorded for FUNimation's original test pilot.

Unlike 99% of One Piece fans(There is the 1% that agrees with me, but 1% is very small), I prefer Erica Schroeder's Luffy. It's more energetic when it needs to be and generally fits the character. Colleen Clinkenbeard is a close second. It was okay, but it was too deep and shrill(The latter of which people say about Erica's Luffy) to me. Chuck Powers' take didn't fit. Using that quiet, timid voice worked when Chuck voiced Yugi Moto, because Yugi was shy and timid. Using a voice like that for a character like Luffy doesn't work at all. If I over explained, this is my opinion in a nutshell:

#1: Erica Schroeder.

#2: Colleen Clinkenbeard.

#3: Chuck Powers.

1: Colleen Clinkenbeard: She IS this character. She sounds funny, cute, boyish but also furious and bone-chilling in the screaming. After seeing how she handled the jet gatling scene, I must confess that I love her Luffy more than Mayumi Tanaka's. Before you shoot me, I love Tanaka's Luffy as well, but Colleen just destroyed that scene and this performance is what made her my second favorite female VA behind Laura Bailey.
2: Erica Schroeder. Her voice is actually quite fitting for Luffy, and if she was given better direction, it could've been great, but the massive nail in the coffin for her Luffy is the acting. She sounds incredibly stiff and wooden, and at best, very cheesy. Her laugh sounds like Woody Woodpecker, and it got consistently worse over time. It made me want to smack Luffy in his rubber face and he was my favorite character.
3: Chuck Powers. Pretty much horrendous. Luffy is one of those characters that just isn't meant to be voiced by a man. His voice is just very forced, and his acting is just atrocious. A terrible performance in a dub that makes 4kids look professional.
said at 6:27 PM on Fri May 1 2015
Erica Schroeder was way too shrill and obnoxious when shouting, not to mention the Woody Woodpecker laugh, but her voice was okay.

Colleen Clinkenbeard is still a little strained with her voice but she still does the best job of the group while also giving Luffy a lot of character.

Chuck Powers sounds extremely generic.

1. Colleen Clinkenbeard: I'll be honest, I'm not super big on ANY of Luffy's voices, but Colleen does the best job regardless. She sounds great during fight scenes, hilarious during Luffy's comedic moments, and absolutely great during emotional ones. It's her voice that I'm not a fan of, but the delivery is great.

2. Chuck Powers: Now this is a case where I like the voice, but the delivery... yeah, it leaves a LOT to be desired.

3. Erica Schroder: This seems to be more of the 4Kids voice director's fault, but I flat out can't STAND her Luffy. It's basically what would happen if Colleen's Luffy voice was made higher pitched and completely unbearable. It doesn't help that a lot of her writing was trash as well.

Personally, I really wish Funimation got a guy to voice Luffy. I know I'm going to sound sexist for saying this, but given that Luffy is in his late teens, he really shouldn't sound like an obvious woman trying to pass as a man.

Colleen Clinkenbeard is a great Luffy, and definitely the English dub's best actress for him: she always puts so much emotion into him and so much passion/life when she acts. I seriously cried when Luffy said he would take care of Arlong when Nami was going insane because Colleen's acting touched me that much-- she embodies Luffy in the dub.

Erica Schroeder...her voice was fine and I get the feeling Colleen tried to keep consistency with her take when the FUNimation dub started in terms of her vocal pitch, but her acting got dreadful as time passed, most of which I feel is due to inept, bad voice direction. She's...meh, I guess, but not the worst one here.

The worst is...Chuck Powers. His voice is alright, but that acting is dreadful and that laugh is way too fake...he's the weakest of the bunch here, IMO.

But yes, according to what you said Marcus, her voice is deeper and gruffer compared to her voice back in 2004. Following Enies Lobby... just... poor Colleen, probably destroyed her voice for all the screaming, ESPECIALLY Gum-Gum Jet Gatling. Honestly she can sound really scary (in a good way) as Luffy. While she can sound annoying talking normally on some of the reads, she's otherwise awesome on stuff like Jet Gatling, when the gravelly tone adds lots to it.

Listen to Colleen's voice when Luffy declares war on the World Government. It's my favourite scene when she voices him.
said at 11:34 AM on Sun Oct 6 2013
Repeating what I said before: Chuck Powers is my favorite Luffy voice (I always pictured Luffy with a "MasakoX" type voice), but his performance is forced and lacking in energy. Erica Schroeder was horrendous as the character: so obnoxious and grating. Colleen easily gives the best performance, but I don't quite agree with the voice. She's kind of forcing it in order to sound more boyish, though it's improved alot as she went on.

None of them are as good as the original Japanese voice, though.

@Galactic_Cyrus in the beginning I would agree that colleen sounded a bit forced although now she sounds way more natural if were comparing her to her seiyuu I prefer colleen for comedy mayumi for fight scenes and I love them both when it comes to serious and emotional moments. It also seems like during those type scenes she doesnt use her raspy voice for luffy

I'm sure Srica would've done better with better direction. She's not a bad actress, but when every actor in a show is hard to stand, that's usually an obvious sign of bad difrecting. Giving it to Colleen. She gets a lot of crap, but she really is a good english voice for Luffy, plus being able to do those screams? Woo, c'mon now. So yeah, Colleen.
said at 4:51 PM on Tue Aug 20 2013
I'm sorry, normally I quite enjoyed some of 4Kids' dubs (gets mauled by angry anime purists and the numerous 4Kids haters), but this is one of the few exceptions. I absolutely detested their dub of One Piece, for numerous reasons.

Colleen Clinkenbeard is definitely the best actor for Luffy in English. She sounds a lot like Erica Schroeder, but she can actually act, and her voice doesn't grate on my ears when Luffy yells.

Erica didn't start off that bad in the first few 4Kids dub episodes, but as the 4Kids dub progressed she actually got worse and worse. Luffy sounded awful half the time whenever he was yelling or screaming. "Zolo, what's all that noise!"

Chuck Powers' voice doesn't fit at all, and the "Luffi" pronounciation doesn't help his performance at all. He's the weakest link here.

After listening to them with eyes closed, picturing Luffy and then reading the editor's opinion I agree with you.
Colleen's acting, while I don't necessarily like her voice, shines. It made it believable for me to hear Luffy talking to Coby while he was on Alvida's ship.
Erica's acting didn't sell it for me. It was a bit of a...stretch.. (pun somewhat intended) to believe that was Luffy. I think you're right about my displeasure being misdirected. 4Kids I think doesn't have that great of a reputation on picking and directing voice actors. Though at the moment I'm still working on giving the American VA a chance on JP produced material.
Lastly Chuck... I am a bit dissapointed. Maybe the blurb that was given was pretty poor because I can see where it was going with the voice but he is indeed the weakest of the 3. Maybe he'll have potential in other lines but that's a bit frustrating...

Colleen hands down. Erica is decent, but can get very grating on the ears, and do I really have to comment on Chuck?

 7 Shout Outs!
I'm not really all that familiar with this series aside from what I've read on the wiki...buuuut I have been interested in the show for a while, so I guess I'll give my two cents on the voices.

Erica Schroeder was the only reason I didn't originally watch the 4kids dub (I didn't know about the censorship and the major edits until much later), during the commercials shown I noticed how she YELLED ALL THE TIME and it just sounded INCREDIBLY annoying and grating. Granted, in the clip shown she sounded alright if only a little stilted and off at times, but the acting does get better by the end of the clip. So I guess she had her moments, but from what I've heard she just yells into the microphone way too much.

For Colleen Clinkenbeard...I don't notice much of a difference, but I do like the slight gruffness she adds to the character. The acting is a little better too, however I've seen some scenes of her yelling on YouTube and I think it sounds just as annoying as the 4kids voice when she yells...I can only hope she yelled less than the 4kids voice...but overall she's alright.

Now for Chuck Powers...I do give them some credit for having a guy Luffy, but on the other hand the recording quality is so bad that it sounds like it came from my old microphone and it seems like he's really forcing the high tone of the voice. That, and it sounds like he's high all the time.

So I guess I'll go with Colleen, I don't think she's perfect but she does a much better job at voicing Luffy than both Erica and Chuck.

@Metabad I couldn't agree more, you pretty much spoke my mind! :)

@Metabad Colleen Clinkenbeard shouting while trying to sound boyish is... yeah, it's not one of the most pleasant sounds I've ever heard.

@Metabad Agreed completely!

@Galactic_Cyrus Cool! Admittedly I was sort of worried at first that I'd get flamed for critiquing Colleen's Luffy at all, but it turns out a good amount of people seem to think exactly what I was thinking about this comparison, it's actually a bit of a relief in all honesty.

@Metabad I'll always say that if we took Chuck Powers' voice and combined it with Colleen's performance, it'd be the perfect Luffy. Erica Schroeder's take can rot in bad dub Hell. XD

@Metabad her screaming definitely got better over time although early on it was very forced which made sense because it was her first boy role. But over time colleen has shown to be a great luffy imo

The Odex Luffy sounds like he has Down Syndrome. XD

@Fulgore2005 and the 4Kids Luffy sounds like he has ADHD
said at 9:16 AM on Sun Jul 1 2012
@MatthewC17 I don't think he sounds like he has ADHD, he just sounds like he's yelling all the time, making for a really annoying performance.

Its actually the only reason as to why I originally didn't watch the 4kids dub.

Erica had an fair base to work from, but Colleen, like other Funimation pro's, is on a whole other level. There's more "meat" in her portrayal which suits Luffy just fine.

Anybody else think the lines in 4Kids' dub was kinda cheesy?

@MatthewC17 No kidding.

@NCZ Great. You just put the 4kids rap back into my head. XD

@Fulgore2005 "Well now that I'm totally full, it's time to say my good-byes" (4Kids)

"Alright now that my belly's full I'm gonna go get me a brand new boat" (FUNimation)

FUNimation actually followed the script unlike 4Kids' hog-wash
said at 1:09 AM on Sat Apr 14 2012
@MatthewC17 To be honest, that's kind of why I want to watch it, what can I say? Its sort of a combination of "bile fascination" and "so bad its good"

Although I'm also interested in watching the Funimation version too, for a more serious take on One Piece.

@Metabad You will not be disappointed wait til Alabasta's story-arc Caitlin Glass' acting will blow your mind
said at 1:57 PM on Fri Apr 20 2012
@MatthewC17 Yeah. A shame, because the 4kids dub might have been better if their script didn't go overboard with silly lines. But I'm with Metabad on the "so bad it's downright hilarious" part. I will also admit that I find some of the voice acting in their dub to be underated.

Of course, the Funimation dub is a huge breath of fresh air. I love the acting of Nefertari Vivi and Portgas D. Ace with a passion.

It's hard to believe that 4Kids also did the original dub of Pokemon, the original dub of YGO, and the dub of Shaman King, all pretty decent dubs, but they also dubbed One Piece horribly.

FUNimation's dub of One Piece is much better in mostly every way, and this is coming from someone who was normally fine with 4Kids and thinks the hate they received was blown out of proportion most of the time due to the editing. I will say 4Kids' voices for Zoro and Chopper were pretty good though.

was the chuck powers one a joke?

I don't know. Colleen's voice isn't too bad.

@Celeste Wait, who said Colleen's voice was bad?
said at 2:36 AM on Fri Jun 24 2011
Yeah we have the wrong actress on the 4Kids clip Bella Hudson said she's not Erica Schroeder and her real name is Eva Kaminsky
She has a website too
NCZ (Admin)
said at 8:28 AM on Fri Jun 24 2011
@MatthewC17 Do you have a source? I checked Eva Kaminsky's website, and she doesn't sound like Bella Hudson at all to me. Erica Schroeder used to have a website, but it's down now and I can't access it.

Here's a source for Erica Schroeder being Bella Hudson.

@NCZ Bulbapedia lists them as two different people and Bulbapedia is never wrong
NCZ (Admin)
said at 3:44 PM on Fri Jun 24 2011
@MatthewC17 Bulbapedia is a wiki, meaning that anyone can edit it. It's not "never wrong". In general, yes it is an accurate website, but don't assume that everything there is correct. The source I provided is more solid than a wiki. Therefore, Erica Schroeder is Bella Hudson.

Plus, Bulbapedia itself even says "She [Bella] is sometimes credited as Erica Schroeder".

Chuck Powers had the best voice for Luffy but Colleen Clikenbeard defenitely had the better performance.

IMHO, Erica Schroeder is the weakest of the three. Way too girly and a poor performance.
said at 12:38 AM on Mon Jun 13 2011
Colleen is the best
Eva Kaminsky sounds like a 5 year old
Luffy is not supposed to have the voice of a man!

 1 Shout Out!
Colleen is obviously the best of the bunch. It's a lot looser and she brings out the best out of Luffy.

Erica's voice is good for Luffy, but her acting is just bad.

Chuck's voice works for Luffy, but his performance just makes him sound really bored.

Erica (bella) did great , but I think they told her to make sure to add in that pointless chuckle which was a turn off for fans and why many would choose colleen over her. I like Colleen's but come on give Erica a lil more credit than that

@TheSwedishElf well that wasn't in every episode but yeah I see your point as well.

I've definitely got to go with Colleen. The Funimation voices are the ones I hear in my head whenever I read a One Piece comic. Erica's was pretty good too, but Colleen had better direction and sounded more like a convincing boy.
said at 7:55 PM on Sat Jul 23 2011
@NCZ Yeah Bella made Luffy sound like a 5 year old and even when she did Young Luffy it was just as bad

Erica was pretty good in the early episode of the 4kids dub, but her performance got worse and worse in the later episodes. Colleen captures Luffy's can sound goofy without over doing it, and makes Luffy sound serious when hes meant to be taking seriously. And then there's Chuck.........

I do think that Colleen nails the personality the best, and understands the character very well, and thus gives a remarkable performance.
