I like both of the women. But the dude sounds really not like Luffy at all.

After listening to them with eyes closed, picturing Luffy and then reading the editor's opinion I agree with you.
Colleen's acting, while I don't necessarily like her voice, shines. It made it believable for me to hear Luffy talking to Coby while he was on Alvida's ship.
Erica's acting didn't sell it for me. It was a bit of a...stretch.. (pun somewhat intended) to believe that was Luffy. I think you're right about my displeasure being misdirected. 4Kids I think doesn't have that great of a reputation on picking and directing voice actors. Though at the moment I'm still working on giving the American VA a chance on JP produced material.
Lastly Chuck... I am a bit dissapointed. Maybe the blurb that was given was pretty poor because I can see where it was going with the voice but he is indeed the weakest of the 3. Maybe he'll have potential in other lines but that's a bit frustrating...

Erica is decent but I feel that the direction was bad. If she had better guidance, she might have been just as good as Colleen.

Colleen did an excellent job. She has better direction and she is not as loud as Erica.

Chuck is a joke, I could probably do a better job than him and I know I suck at voice acting.

Colleen hands down. Erica is decent, but can get very grating on the ears, and do I really have to comment on Chuck?

I'm not really all that familiar with this series aside from what I've read on the wiki...buuuut I have been interested in the show for a while, so I guess I'll give my two cents on the voices.

Erica Schroeder was the only reason I didn't originally watch the 4kids dub (I didn't know about the censorship and the major edits until much later), during the commercials shown I noticed how she YELLED ALL THE TIME and it just sounded INCREDIBLY annoying and grating. Granted, in the clip shown she sounded alright if only a little stilted and off at times, but the acting does get better by the end of the clip. So I guess she had her moments, but from what I've heard she just yells into the microphone way too much.

For Colleen Clinkenbeard...I don't notice much of a difference, but I do like the slight gruffness she adds to the character. The acting is a little better too, however I've seen some scenes of her yelling on YouTube and I think it sounds just as annoying as the 4kids voice when she yells...I can only hope she yelled less than the 4kids voice...but overall she's alright.

Now for Chuck Powers...I do give them some credit for having a guy Luffy, but on the other hand the recording quality is so bad that it sounds like it came from my old microphone and it seems like he's really forcing the high tone of the voice. That, and it sounds like he's high all the time.

So I guess I'll go with Colleen, I don't think she's perfect but she does a much better job at voicing Luffy than both Erica and Chuck.

The Odex Luffy sounds like he has Down Syndrome. XD

Erica had an fair base to work from, but Colleen, like other Funimation pro's, is on a whole other level. There's more "meat" in her portrayal which suits Luffy just fine.

Chuck Powers had the best voice for Luffy but Colleen Clikenbeard defenitely had the better performance.

IMHO, Erica Schroeder is the weakest of the three. Way too girly and a poor performance.

Colleen is obviously the best of the bunch. It's a lot looser and she brings out the best out of Luffy.

Erica (bella) did great , but I think they told her to make sure to add in that pointless chuckle which was a turn off for fans and why many would choose colleen over her. I like Colleen's but come on give Erica a lil more credit than that

I really do not like any of the choices. The women do amuch better job than the man. He can't even pronounce Luffy right. Something is off.... I think it's because no matter how much they make their voices manly, they forgot not to make it sound like a show for 6yr olds. There is a Seasame Street vibe to the quality of the speaking. I know these women can do better, I've heard them with other characters/anime. English dubs sometimes forget to listen for that pre-school tone that isn't supposed to be there. Occassionally they get it right, but for One Piece, they failed.

I've definitely got to go with Colleen. The Funimation voices are the ones I hear in my head whenever I read a One Piece comic. Erica's was pretty good too, but Colleen had better direction and sounded more like a convincing boy.

Erica was pretty good in the early episode of the 4kids dub, but her performance got worse and worse in the later episodes. Colleen captures Luffy's can sound goofy without over doing it, and makes Luffy sound serious when hes meant to be taking seriously. And then there's Chuck.........

I do think that Colleen nails the personality the best, and understands the character very well, and thus gives a remarkable performance.
