Voice Compare » One Piece » Miss Valentine

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Miss Valentine with sound clips and images.
Seems like forever since I last did a Voice Compare, but with a new year and still being the holiday season here's a holiday character, Miss Valentine!

Miss Valentine is an agent of Baroque Works and is partnered with Mr. 5 for various missions.

She is a devil fruit user of the Kilo Kilo Fruit which allows her to decrease and increase her weight from 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs) to 10,000 kilograms (22,000 lbs) without changing her body size.

With this dangerous ability she can crush her opponents to death with intense force and also escape situations by floating on the wind with an umbrella.

Miss Valentine usually doesn't take her work very seriously; often laughing at her opponents. She is a very confident person, enjoys tormenting her opponents but dislikes being ignored.

In the original English dub of the One Piece anime series by 4Kids Entertainment, Miss Valentine was voiced by Amy Palant.

When Funimation got the license for the One Piece anime series after 4Kids dropped it, Jamie Marchi voiced Miss Valentine in the uncut re-dubbed episodes.

*Chio Su Ping voiced Miss Valentine in the Odex dub.

I'm sure many Sonic fans know that Amy Palant at one point voiced Tails in various video games and the voice for Miss Valentine is pretty similar.

While some of you may think the voice is great, I personally think it's very unfitting for THIS character.

IMO Amy Palant's voice doesn't match Miss Valentine's personality, age or appearance very well.

However I'm sure if Amy Palant had a better script to work with (one that wasn't toned down for 4Kids' children target audience) she might've done better (voice direction could've affected the outcome too).

4Kids also made the strange decision to skip several episodes (an entire mini story arc) which reduced the episodes Miss Valentine appeared in.

I think Jamie Marchi did a much better job voicing this character, so my vote goes to her.

Amy Palant sounds WAY too much like a boy here, which is strange since I always thought she sounded WAY too much like a girl as Tails. She really should've switched those two voices around, although the voice direction could easily be at fault here. Still, it's not all that bad of a performance I guess, but the voice itself sounds awkward coming out of Miss Valentine.

Chio Su Ping is just way too annoying and grating. I'll give her points for sounding more feminine than Amy and she does sound a bit more unique in the role, but she almost makes her sound like a little girl as it's way too high pitched. Plus the recording quality literally hurts my ears.

Jamie Marchi sounds a tiny bit generic, but the performance itself is fantastic, she sounds both sultry and sarcastic and after reading about her personality in the description, I could perfectly imagine that voice coming out of Miss Valentine. Her performance at the beginning amuses me and at the end it even kind of scares me!

Jamie Marchi is a perfect match for the character, Amy Palant and Chio Su Ping were completely misdirected and miscast.

Still far prefer Jamie, but Chio wasn't bad. Her voice was interesting, and surprisingly works well with the character, even if she sounds a little fandubby (probably because of the recording quality).
While Jamie's VOICE is similar to her other roles, her overall performance is interesting. She's still perfect as this character. Yes she sounds sexy and all, but also very evil and condescending, not to mention, very threatening.
Amy is still really bad (too masculine and over-the-top. She sounds like a boy), probably because of the weird way that dub was handled. I don't really blame her at all.

I agree Chio is better than Amy, but I still find her too shrill like HienFan said, and as you said, fandubby due to the recording quality: out of these three, I'm definitely sticking with Jamie, though. Amy is way, way too masculine here, but of course, coming from this dub you can't blame her.

@HienFan Listening again Jamie sounds a lot better, Amy sounds more like Kate Higgins(and her lines are awful [AND HEAVIER AND HEAVIER AND HEAVIER!])

I can't be the only person who thinks Chio is the worst though

Amy is...a miscast or at least misdirected. Too gruff and boy-ish (I agree with almost everyone that she sounds too much like her Tails).

Jamie is a little better but she is playing Miss Valentine as a typical Jamie role, there is no distinction in the voice and doesn't stand out at all.

Surprisingly, I like Chio the most. Don't get me wrong, her voice could get a little too high and even grating at times and not the most constant. However it does stand out a little more and the higher almost cutesy voice works for Miss Valentine.

None are perfect but this is the one time I think te Singapore handled he character better.

Maybe typical Jamie role is the wrong wording, I meant its just her normal voice.

Am I the only one who thinks that Amy Palant's Miss Valentine sounds exactly like Kate Higgins' Tails voice?

This one couldn't be more obvious in my eyes. Jamie Marchi completely nailed Miss Valentine's personality and her voice fit the character pretty well.

Amy Palant completely blew it. I mean, her voice doesn't fit the character at all. Again this goes back to bad vocal direction because I've seen what 4Kids could do at their best, and this is certainly not it. Amy made her sound too boyish and really it's a total miscast in every way imaginable.

@OldSchoolFTW As said before, Amy Palant's Miss Valentine sounds like Kayzie Roger's Coby or even Erica Schroeder's Luffy. That is COMPLETELY wrong.

It sounds like Erica Schroeder's Luffy more than anything else, so I couldn't agree more with you. It's totally off base for Ms. Valentine.

Now that I think about it, I don't like Amy Palant at all. Can you imagine a more unfitting voice for this character? It was way too masculine, and very, very bizarre to listen to (like I said earlier, she actually sounded more like a boy as this character than Tails, who I always thought sounded too feminine with her voice).

Jamie Marchi was perfect for this role every way.

Amy would have been better off voicing either Luffy or Coby

If Amy's voice was this boyish when she was playing Tails I probably wouldn't have hated her so much. But hearing it on Valentine, a woman, is really freaking annoying. I'm gonna go Jaime for sure.

WoW! why does 4kids choose poor voice actors. i din't like amy. It's like they don't have souls.

@Gekko_Amario 4Kids were not bad voice actors, in fact I suggest watching the dub for Berserk. The biggest misconception of 4Kids was that they had bad acting when it was just bad direction and GOD AWFUL localization.
said at 3:05 PM on Thu Aug 22 2013
I actually disagree on the vocal direction. I've seen the 4Kids actors pull off GREAT performances in some 4Kids dubs, actually. It depends on the voice director to be honest.

As for localization...well, that depends what 4Kids dub we're talking about in my eyes. Sometimes it worked, and other times it didn't. Not that I liked the idea of "Americanization" myself, but sometimes they had to make edits to comply with the FCC's standards. Stupid, but it wasn't all their fault.

1. Jamie Marchi - She sounds more natural and fits the character better
2. Amy Palant - She sounds like a young boy I'd say she almost sounds like Tara Strong doing Timmy

Wow, Palant's Valentine voice is a better boy's voice than her Tails was!

Marchi nailed it. Palant's read sounded a like she was trying to voice a young boy. (yup. same conclusion as everyone else)

Jamie Marchi wins, hands down.

Amy Palant's take sounds far too boyish. (That's right! I said "BOYISH!")

Wow, who says Amy Palant sounds too much like a girl! At least we know her Tails could sound even better than before! That tails voice is perfect! But I have to give this to Jamie. Her voice indeed fit the character better by just appearance alone.

@AMT Yeah it's strange... but Amy Palant actually sounded MORE like a boy as Ms. Valentine than as Tails!

I agree that Tails' voice is highly unfitting for Miss Valentine. Jamie Marchi, on the other hand, is a perfect fit.
