Narnia Narnia

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Aslan with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Narnia

Aslan; also known as "The Great Lion" is the guardian and savior of the mystical realm of Narnia. He is a talking lion, the king of all beasts and a guide to all children who visit Narnia. He is wise, kind and loving but also dangerous, fearless and powerful. Aslan is a God and an alternate version of Jesus Christ.

Neeson: wise, powerful, royal.

I appreciate how Liam Neeson places the voice of Aslan low enough in his register that there's a bit of a growl there. He sounds just enough like a beast that it makes sense for the voice to come out of a lion, but he keeps it gentle and regal as well.

One of the easiest ones ever. One is too over-the-top, another is too underplayed, the last is just right for Lion Jesus. Liam Neeson FTW!

This is a tie between Stephen Thorne and Liam Neeson for me. Thorne has an appropriately booming voice and brings enough regality to the role. Neeson wasn't exactly my ideal choice to play Aslan, but he pulls it off surprisingly well. Both do great in their own way.

On the other hand, Pickup is another matter. He's not terrible, but he sounds a bit too wheezy and not quite as strong as he could be. Although I do partially blame the fact that the puppet wasn't so well synched to begin with on his sometimes stilted delivery.

I saw 1988 Narnia series first and I thought Ronald's voice was good but Liam's was better.

I like how all the clips are talking about the deep magic.

Liam Neeson reminds me to James Earl Jones preformance as Mufasa! Both have just the voice that fits those characters!

@Mrguy22594 Good question. I wouldn't know the answer.

ronald pickup makes aslan sound almost evil. stephen thorne makes him sound like a joke. liam neeson is just a beast and owns this character like his own pair of shoes.

This is hardly a comparison. Liam Neeson takes this one easily.

Qui-Gon Jinn FTW!!! Who else has the honor of voicing both the King of the Jungle AND the King of the Gods in the remake of Clash of the Titans!

it's MAYBE possible that you are thinking of a Narnia TV series in 1967. Only problem is it has never been released for home viewing.

aww man I didn't mean to crush your fond memories of the show or anything. If you can find a better clip for Ronald Pickup ask foxwolf to update it. :)

It could be that he was just inconsistent with his voice over the course of the series I guess :(

well here's the clips of Aslan for

Prince Caspian/Dawn Treader
(around 7 min)

Silver Chair (first couple seconds)

They sound similar to Ronald Pickup IMO

I am 100% sure on the William Todd Jones just being inside the suit. I am not 100% sure on the others...maybe the only way to tell is to listen to clips of him in all three original 'movies' to see if he sounds different. I could be wrong for sure but for some reason I remember a different voice than the one thats on here...more research needed on my part I guess

so William Todd Jones was just the suit actor like David Prowse for Darth Vader. Moved but didn't actually act. So don't include him?

Timothy Rose voiced in Prince Caspian

@Jackson_H So if he had different voices in those other productions, why aren't they here?

@Dogman15 Ailsa Berk and Timothy Rose were only the puppeteers, not the voice. For starters, Ailsa Berk is female.

Last post I promise. According to one site I checked...

William Todd Jones was only the actor inside and

Ronald Pickup did the voice in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe parts

Timothy M. Rose did the voice in Prince Caspian

Ailsa Berk did the voice in the Silver Chair

Was there more than one version of the original movie because that clip sounds nothing like I remember Aslan sounding like??
