Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Shan Yu with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINION
Alright folks for the 2nd Mulan VC we shall go over the main villain known as Shan Yu whom is known as probably one of Disney's more menacing villains. (While he lacks the over the top flamboyance and is the one of the uncommon Disney Villains to not have a song, but on the other hand he is not flat out stoic either.) In the movie Shan Yu was voiced by Miguel Ferrer whom was quite exceptional in this role. Miguel's voice for the role was moderately low & rough which blended well with his wonderful performance which did make Shan Yu menacing but also has a rather charismatic sinister tone as well. (Especially evident when Shan Yu occasionally shows his rather morbid sense of humor.) To make a long story short its quite possibly Miguel Ferrer's best performance IMO and is another fine example of the voice work in that movie. In Kingdom Hearts II Shan Yu made an appearance, while Disney and SquareEnix did manage to get certain original cast members to reprise their roles Miguel wasn't one of them so Corey Burton took over the role. As much as I like Corey Burton and he has done some very good stand-in performances before (heck Corey is practically the designated stand in for Christopher Lee) this isn't quite one of them. While Corey's overall performance is not REALLY bad but this is another case of a very average at best "Stand-in" performance in which Corey's voice was a bit too high for the role. Granted to be fair while Shan Yu was of course the main antagonist in Mulan's world in the game he barely said anything at all so in Corey's defense he barely had the time to get to work with the role here but it still does feel like a bit of a miscast. So overall I am definitely going with Miguel Ferrer here for sure.
