Voice Compare » Mobile Suit Gundam » Kira Yamato
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Kira Yamato with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINIONToday on the Mobile Suit Gundam VC section we shall do a VC for the Gundam SEED series and so the first Gundam SEED Voice Compare shall go to its male lead... KIRA YAMATO! We shall of course start off with the original Gundam SEED series in which in the English dub Matt Hill played the role of Kira Yamato. While this is not the first time Matt Hill has ever had a remotely serious role Kira is certainly one of his more dramatic roles and he does a suitably dramatic performance here. (For one thing Matt Hill even asked James Coringall the Voice Director of the series' English dub to kick him in the crotch so Matt can do Kira's "Crying Scenes", now that is showing some dedication.) Anyways Matt Hill does get to do a very emotional heroic performance for Kira as it does suit on how Kira like other Gundam Protagonists was a normal teenage boy whom somehow got himself into a war and ends up being the Hero of that War. Basically Matt Hill's work as Kira is lets just say a very good example of his voice work and is a somewhat interesting change of pace for him as well.
While Matt Hill has been voicing Kira for most of his English Dub appearances one exception would be for Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 in which Matt's nephew Simon Hill took over the role here. First of all I must say that Simon Hill did do an impeccable job trying to sound like his dear old uncle Matt as Kira here in this game (granted one could tell some slight difference in Simon's voice compared to Matt's but it is not at all obvious.) But still much like his uncle Simon was also able to do a pretty good performance as well that would suit Kira's rather melodramatic personality pretty well. Overall I must say Simon's performance as Kira Yamato is a fine example of the voice work in that game and is a great example of how to do a "Sound-a-like" performance. Overall both of these guys did well for the role so I am going with a tie here.
