Voice Compare » Mobile Suit Gundam » Char Aznable
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Char Aznable with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINION
Well folks for today's VC we have the original antagonistic rival of the Mobile Suit Gundam series namely Char Aznable! (In fact pretty much anyone else who wears a Mask in this franchise is often deemed a "Char Clone" though usually there is a reason why.)And believe it or not we will actually start this with well known VA Steve Blum. For those who don't already know that while Bandai generally uses Canadian Voice talent for their handiwork on Gundam they actually used Californian VA talent for their old dub of the Gundam movies back in the late 90's. Namely this was back when Bandai was new at dubbing their handiwork and it sometimes it shows. But while their old Gundam movie dub was way better than the English release of Dragon Ball GT Final Bout for the PS1 back then I found this dub to be above average at best. Though I will say that Blum did deliver one of the better performances in the old Gundam movies as Char as his voice and performance was pretty natural.
In the early 2000's the original Mobile Suit Gundam series was given an English dub in which Char is voiced by Ocean Group VA Michael Kopsa (whom for the most part is his current English VA). Alike the old Gundam movies I found the dub of the original series to be above average as well. (But then again while I do not dislike the original series I never thought it really aged that well.) Anyways Michael Kopsa did a nice calm classy but not too over-the-up voice and performance for the Red Comet in which to me it worked pretty well. And last but not least while Michael Kopsa has (and still) been voicing Char ever since the dub of the original series the only exception would be in the dub of Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta in which Ocean Studio's Calgary-based counterpart Blue Water did the voice work.
Anyways in the English dub of Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta VA Tom Edwards voiced Char, I know very little about Tom Edwards' work but he is not too bad as Char. While Char seems to be having a bit of a different role in this series Tom's Char voice does have a calm cool voice and his performance does seem to fit Char's persona fairly well.
Overall I am not quite sure which one to pick here this time around, all 3 of these performances did work pretty well.

'I find it weird that they messed on Zeta Gundam but they did so well on G Gundam.'
Wrong. Blue Water don't produce good dubs. Blue Water and good dubs are best mutually exclusive.

Kospa was good in Counterattack, but he sounds like he's phoning it in for most of the TV series honestly. Its a shame.
I heard Blum first I will always like his version more.

I actually don't mind any of their voices. They all sound pretty decent when I listen to them.
The first time I ever heard Tom's voice. He was Kyral in G Gundam.
I find it weird that they messed on Zeta Gundam but they did so well on G Gundam.

Char Aznable is one of my favorite anime characters, so I have a definite opinion here.
As much as I love Steven Blum's work, I'm going to say that Michael Kopsa is the superior Char here. He has this confident, but bemused sound to him. Blum's sounds annoyed most of the time.
Edwards is doing an impression of Kopsa, but it's not quite making it for me. He's at least one of the better performances in the awful Zeta Gundam dub.
