Samus Aran

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Samus Aran with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Metroid

Samus Aran is a freelance bounty hunter and former space marine. As a child, her planet was raided and destroyed by the Space Pirates and her colony, along with her parents, was killed by the Space Pirate leader Ridley. Samus was then found and adopted by the bird-like Chozo race of the planet Zebes. Infused with Chozo DNA and trained as a warrior, Samus was given a powerful suit of armor that would enable her to hunt down the Space Pirates and exact her revenge on Ridley.

Alesia Glidewell is (as of right now) the definitive Samus voice sounding very mature and husky.

Jessica Martin's chances of a great performance was blown to bits by the poor voice direction. She just sounds too emotionless and the character destroying disaster of a script did her no favors either,

Alesia is my favorite. She sounds fun, serious and down to earth.
Side note: Either Brina Palencina or Elizabeth Maxwell would be great choices if casted.

Alesia Glidewell easily takes this. Her voice is definitely pretty fitting, and is always the voice for Samus I hear in my head when I read her dialogue in "Metroid Fusion"

I actually do like Jessica Martin's voice as well. It's just that the script/direction she's working with... wasn't ideal unfortunately. A shame because she probably could've done a MUCH better job honestly.

Alesia Glidewell nuff said. No offence to Jessica Martin but she was pretty bad, I mean she shows no range or emotion, I wish they had Jennifer Hale voicing her.

Definitely Alesia Glidewell for me. Honestly I would love it if she ever got the chance to voice Samus in a main Metroid game. She brings a nice mature, husky voice and I'd love to see what else she could bring to the table.

Jessica Martin...... she got the short of the stick in terms of direction.

Honestly I kinda hope Jennifer Hale never voices Samus, I mean she's already Commander Shepard she doesn't really need to be Samus.

If they do another game, I hope they either bring back Alesia or go find an unknown talent but one that actually fits the role really well.

@Autovolt Pretty much agree with you 100% on Alesia's voice for Samus, and yeah. I feel really bad for Jessica. I mean she could have been pretty good but unfortunately the script she had to work with was absolutely horrendous.
said at 11:32 AM on Wed May 4 2016
@Autovolt Totally agreed, Alesia is what we would see for her take on Samus in the next new main metroid game.

A newcomer voice actress that never been in video games and other types of media might sound cool too.

And Jennifer Hale that people see that she'll voice Samus, it felt like a rumor and she never recalls that she voices Samus which I could understand here.

And as for Jessica Martin, I honestly think she's better off voicing new female protagonist that isn't Samus.

@Autovolt "Honestly I kinda hope Jennifer Hale never voices Samus, I mean she's already Commander Shepard she doesn't really need to be Samus. "

So what if she played Shepard, she can't play another tough female protagonist in space? Cause she did in Star Wars to.

And even though, think of the character as a more, family friendly version of Shepard, so I'd say it would suffice well.

@Troodon2 There are some of us who aren't at all fond of typecasting that doesn't bring anything fresh to the VA's resume, and that's what's being spoken out against. If any new VA is going to voice Samus, it should be someone who hasn't played this character type at all yet.
said at 11:07 AM on Wed May 11 2016
@CatsTuxedo I'm well aware of that!

Alright i'm gonna say this in a honest way of saying this, i find Alesia Glidewell's take on Samus is quite foxy in a manner of speaking and her grunts and quotes are strongly cold, silent, with hints of vigilante-like which i can appreciate.

Jessica's on the other hand, sounds dully emotional and soft at best with no cold, silent yet emotive with the hint of vigilante-like what Alesia had to offer no offense to her.

So yeah my vote still goes for Alesia herself.

@SteelEthlan That I meant rather dull, with some emotions.
said at 2:15 PM on Fri Jun 24 2016
@SteelEthlan I know it's the direction, but still she didn't capture the strongly, silent emotive character she seems to be.

I know this is somewhat of a type cast but whenever I think of Samus, Kathleen Zuelch (Tex from Red vs Blue) comes to mind. I think she she has a cold and serious attitude but can still emotive.
said at 1:37 AM on Fri Feb 27 2015
@Music Meister I agree. Now I'm going to throw you through a loop; Yvonne Strahovski. Not for Miranda Lawson, but for Aya Brea. In that game she had some moments where her energy just reminded me of Tex; a real heroic you're not stopping me attitude. I could hardly believe the same actress played Mass Effect's winner of the Miss Butt Cleavage competition.

Jennifer Hale is my perfect imagined voice for how Samus should sound, but I would have no qualms with Alesia Glidewell ever possibly returning to do the role, should Samus ever speak again.

You should add an entry for Jennifer Hale and include the Lost Archive Narration that can now be found on YouTube. Thank you, internet.

@VGAfanatic That's a generic narrator, not Samus.

I'm in the camp that would prefer it if Samus stayed in the role of the silent protagonist, not only because it best suits her persona as a strong and reserved explorer, but because it compliments the series' atmosphere, by far its strongest attribute. That and Other M kind of turned me off to the concept of a talking Samus. Not that it can't be done right, of course, but I just think the series needs to work on cleaning up after Sakamoto's fan-fiction and redeeming Samus's character before it earns that privilege again.

I'm hearing everyone clamoring left and right about how Hale needs to voice Samus for real, but she was already Commander Shepard; having her voice another one would just be spoiling us, not to mention be a generally uninspired casting choice.

When or if Samus is ever allowed to talk again, I nominate Kira Tozer, in spite of the overwhelming unlikelihood of Nintendo ever going to Vancouver for their voice-acting needs. Next to nobody's heard of her, but she has genuine acting ability and versatility, and pulling off such a high-profile role would undoubtedly give her exposure and assuage all of us who are yearning for a popular voice-acted depiction of the character.

@CatsTuxedo I like what they did in Metroid Fusion. Samus didn't speak out loud, but we did get to hear her inner thoughts.

I will also mention that Next Level Games were working on a new Metroid game a few years ago. They're based in Vancouver and even hired local talent for their Punch-Out Wii game. Unfortunately it was cancelled during the concept stage so they could work on Luigi's Mansion 2, but since they have a deal to work exclusively with Nintendo, there's always the possibility they could get a second chance with the franchise.

Between these two Alesia is the best. She sounded pretty badass, serious, and sexy, just how the character should sound, even if she basically just sounded like a generic action girl. Jessica was horridly miscast. Other than her voice sounding extremely boring, a piece of cardboard could act better than that.

But Jennifer Hale seriously needs to return as Samus. I wonder why she didn't voice her in Brawl and Other M. Her voice was a perfect fit in every way.

One interesting tidbit: Ai Kobayashi was the Japanese voice of Samus in Other M. She also voiced Electra in Cowboy Bebop: The Movie in Japan. Guess who voiced Electra in English? You guessed it! Jennifer Hale...

Alesia Glidewell fits WAAAY better. Other M's writing and voice direction ruined Jessica Martin's shot at a good Samus.

Would LOVE to have Jennifer Hale return to the role, if they make another Metroid game with voice acting in the future... or maybe Ali Hillis (Lightning Farron, Liara T'Soni) could take over the role.

@chaosincarnate Is this what you're talking about?

That is Jennifer Hale's voice, but it's not Samus, just a generic narrator (note that she refers to Samus in the third person).
said at 1:55 PM on Thu Jun 27 2013
@NCZ my bad. I heard that cut intro a couple weeks ago, and forgot that Samus was referred to in third person. Shame, I wish they rehired her for Other M. She would've fit Samus in that game better than Jessica.

Alesia should have reprised the role in Other M. It would have sounded better than Jessica.
said at 4:44 PM on Wed Mar 13 2013
@pete Oh some of her delivery like "You're mine" sounds a bit sexy which if I'm gonna take a shot in the dark at since I only played a Gameboy Advance game and the original Super Smash Bros. and Brawl t and say it doesn't fit the character. Maria Canals would work.
said at 6:41 AM on Thu Mar 14 2013
@pete I think most of the problems in Jessica Martin's acting was more the director's fault, since Sakamoto directed her despite English not being his first language.

That's just what I've heard anyways, but if that's the case even if Alesia reprised her role in Other M, the direction and writing would've most likely prevented her from being as good as she was in Brawl.

@pokemastanumba1 I'd assume you're talking about Jennifer voicing Samus in a future game. Right now she hasn't had actual dialogue.
said at 10:18 PM on Fri Jul 27 2012
@NCZ that really true? Because it seems really strange to me that they'd cast such a well-reowned actress as the lead of one of a company's most critically-acclaimed franchises, only to have her do grunts. Admittedly I only played the first entry in the Prime series, so I'm not sure myself.

I do believe that Jennifer may reprise the role sometime though.

@pokemastanumba1 Yes, it's true. I have an issue of Nintendo Power from a couple years back where they interview Jennifer Hale and they discuss her work as Samus.
said at 10:35 PM on Fri Jul 27 2012
@NCZ Thanks for clearing that up. I probably should rephrase what I said though: Alesia is actually very good, it's just that I really really like Jennifer Hale.

But I do have to agree with some of the others that Jessica's clip should be more than just the narration though.

Jessica Martin was very "meh". She wasn't terrible, but she sounded too weak and almost kinda emo. Alesia Glidewell sounds too seductive for Samus but she's still a much better overall fit. I understand that Jennifer Hale never had a speaking role, so I know why she's not here, but I think that she would get my vote and would be a good choice for a voiced Samus as well. Her Jean Grey voice would work.

The main problem is that she made Samus sound like a rookie when she's suppose to sound like a veteran.
