Mega Man X

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mega Man X with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Mega Man

X is a Maverick Hunter created by Dr. Light, and the main character of the Mega Man X side series. He is a Reploid and defends the world from Mavericks. Though he fights as hard as he can, he does so reluctantly, as X is a pacifist at heart.

Thanks to Bombermanp for the sound clips.

Mark Gatha was the best. Mike Donovan was okay, but too deep. Ruth Shiraishi sounded too girlish, and doesn't really suit X's appearance or personality. Peter von Gomm spoke slowly, sounding awkward and thuggish. It's a shame; he has a strong, youthful sounding voice ordinarily, and could've been exceptional with better direction. Mark is the only one who I feel really nails the character, knocking it out of the park with his hot-blooded, committed, and strong-willed performance.

Ted Sroka's really underwhelming here. He lacks any sort of authority the character normally has and sounds too young for the role.

I'll still take young sounding X over too girly sounding X though since Ruth Shirashi barely even fits the design at all. I've no clue what the voice director was thinking on that decision.

Michael Donovan sounds rather odd but he fits that version of the character well and Peter Von Gomm's alright but gets some weird deliveries at times.

Mark Gatha wins this one since he gets the commanding presence down well and has some fantastic acting for some of the more serious and darker moments.

Ted's alright, second place, Mark is still the man, Mike Donovan is good but a better fit for Zero, Ruth acting is good but that voice for that version? No thanks though Peter sounds far too whiny

VC thoughts update

Ted Sroka is my favorite here. I like how youthful and energetic he sounds in the role. Quite possibly one of the better performances in that game.

Mike Donovan is a good choice on paper (especially if you listen to his Sage from Ronin Warriors), and he does play the role well, but it's kinda odd to have X sounding like this.

Peter Von Gomm sounds good, but his delivery could be better.

Mark Gatha has some good energy and delivery, but sometimes, his delivery is kinda weak (that last "Sig... ma..." sounded a bit odd to me).

Ruth Shiraishi doesn't fit the design. Some of her delivery does sound good, but seeing X with a little kid's voice is kinda... bizarre.

I like all of his VAs expect Ted and Ruth. Ruth sounded way to girly and Ted...I'm sorry who decided casting Dan Hibiki as X was a good idea? He doesn't work in the slightest. It's to rough and the direction and material doesn't do him any favors either.

Michael Donovan worked for how X was in that show, bu he still wasn't ideal.

Ruth Shiraishi was a huge miscast.I feel like her voice wouldn't even fit for original Mega Man, but for X, she's even worse. I've always pictured X as being biologically older, like around teenage years. She just doesn't work for him.

Peter Von Goom COULD'VE worked, I agree, but he strikes a weird balance between trying too hard and not trying hard enough. He sounds melodramatic, yet bored.

Mark Gatha nails X. He can do him during his more emotional moments, and when it's time to get serious. It's a shame that he retired from voice acting, because he was the ideal voice for X.

Overall, I go with Mark Gatha. All of the others are far from ideal.

I could also see Robbie Daymond voicing X in the future and doing a good job.

1. Mark Gatha:

His performance has the most depth and presence to it: he also emotes with the most passion and energy, so I'm going with him on this one.

2. Michael Donovan:

He does a pretty good job as well, though I feel he sounds a bit too old at times.

3. Peter Von Gomm:

He's just a bit too flat in his delivery and a bit too stiff, despite his voice being tolerable.

4: Ruth Shiraishi:

She's clearly miscast in the role- too effeminate and soft.

i actually liked ruth shirashi's voice because Meagan X was younger in megaman X4 than in X7 or X8. Meagan X was likely supposed to be a boy around 12-15 years old.

@Winspector There's really no basis for that. X has already been active for years in X4, particularly with the implication of a time skip between it and X3. And ya know, there's the whole robot thing.

Even if X was intended to sound like that, there's no way Ruth Shirashi's voice would pass for a pubescent boy.

Mark Gatha is the only one here who really fits Mega Man X so for that I give my vote to him. Though I don't think he's perfect. Personally I think he's kind of whiny sounding.

Michael Donovan sounds way too deep for X. It's good voice just not fitting for this version of the blue bomber.

Peter Von Gomm is a more whinier and annoying version of Gatha's take so yeah I don't like it.

Ruth Shiraishi.....what on Earth WERE THEY THINKING! They must have thought X is still the same Mega Man which he's not. Mega Man X has always had a male actor in the Japanese version so why did they think a female actress would have worked in the first place?

While Domon Kasshu will always be my favorite role of his, Mark Gatha's X still manages to be a great performance on its own. The raw intensity of his voice really sells the character at his strongest and he does a great job with X in his moments of self doubt.

Michael Donovan is pretty much just doing a generic hero type voice.
Nothing about it says anything about
the character.

The slow, sluggish delivery makes Peter Von Gomm sound drunk. It doesn't help that X spends most of X7 sitting on his ass and whining.

Ruth Shiraishi voice is too monotone and flat at the best of times, and too loud and obnoxious at the worst of times. I can only imagine the decision to cast her came from pure laziness, taking the same person who played original Mega Man and just slapping them on X without a care. They're two completely different characters, damn it!

Mark Gatha is the only one I like of the group, honestly, Donovan in second but he sounds a bit deep, Gomm sounds too old and stilted in delivery, and Shiraishi seems badly miscast and overly feminine here.

I will obviously and gladly vote for Mark Gatha because he isn't just vocalizing X, he is X. Michael Donovan is quite alright, but the way he voiced is just too deep for my liking, Peter Van Gomm...ugh he doesn't voice nor feel like he was performing as X which he potentially got screwed over by a voice director know what you get the idea. And finally, Ruth Shiraishi her performance for X wasn't much better than she did for Mega Man but i'll do admit she sounds more expressive than what Peter has.

So far for my results i'm going to choose here:

#1) Mark Gatha

#2) Michael Donovan

#3) Ruth Shiraishi (Like i said not better than her mega man sorta, but still more expressive)

#4) Peter Von Gomm.

@Starscreamsfan I don't normally say stuff like this, but I'm honestly baffled as to why you feel Mark Gatha is the worst. Ruth Shiraishi doesn't fit at all and Peter Von Gomm has a good voice but extremely awkward acting. Mark Gatha is the only one of the four who manages to combine a fitting voice, good acting, and the hot-blooded passion X needs.

1. Mark Gatha: People have said it enough, but I feel the need to drive it home as Mark IS X. He nails X's doubtful and reluctant yet heroic personality to a T, and he sends shivers down my spine whenever he's angry. I always get hyped for the final battle in Maverick Hunter X because he delivers "I'm going to finish this, right here, right now. I WILL DEFEAT YOU, SIGMA!" perfectly.

2. Michael Donovan: I can see what they wanted Mike to do with X, make him sound tougher and older than the current Mega Man. However, his voice sounds too deep and as a result comes off as unintentionally intimidating at times. Still, for the first voice of X he isn't horrible or anything, but he's merely decent with a lot of room for improvement.

3. Peter Von Gomm: Peter has an awesome name... but a not-so-awesome X voice. His delivery is incredibly slurred, whiny, and all around bad and non-emotive. He's still better than Ruth though.

4. Ruth Shiraishi: Completely and utterly unfitting for X. The high-pitched girl voice worked a bit for Mega Man, but it doesn't work AT ALL for X who is designed to look like an adult. I'd say that this is pretty much the western equivalent to adult Goku's infamous Japanese voice.

Ok, here's my opinion:
Ian James - I agree, his acting is great but his voice does not match the character on screen. That's a miscast in my opinion.

Ruth Shiraishi - Traditional higher-toned Japanese voice acting for a male character. For a western audience I don't think matched. So agreed - the pitch was just too high. Also, the acting was so-so - with words coming out at an awkward pace.

Peter Von Gomm - I also must agree here. His delivery of the lines were too slow. I also couldn't believe him as X.

Mark Gatha - Perfect.

I thought I was going to be able to give you a conflicting opinion but no... you're spot on on all of these.

Who would voice him now? If heard people say Yuri Lowenthal, but who could out do Mark Gatha!?
said at 4:24 PM on Tue Sep 20 2011
@SM Scorx I wouldn't consider any form of Megaman in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to begin with, since Keiji Inafune already left Capcom and the company itself cancelled two of the franchise's titles. There's always some hidden hope, but then again, it might not come to be.

As for who could voice X in the possible future, I was thinking Yuri too, but for some reason, I can't help but either picture Vic Mignogna or Sam Riegel as well. Ehh...

#1 Mark Gatha
As usual, I'm with NCZ all the way for this VC. Mark was the definitely the best one out of the four here. He was the only one who sounded like a real teenage reploid with lots of internal conflicts yet dutiful leadership. More importantly, his performances in X8, CM, and MHX felt very lifelike and realistic, bringing out X's main virtues without any sort of problem doing so.

#2 Ian James Corlett
Yes, he's too deep, but not bad at all. It's a good voice, has some of X's vibes, and one of the better voices in that show. There's really no big problem here, just the pitch of Montel Williams needs to be adjusted.

#3 Peter Von Gomm
For the most part, I agree with both NintendoNate25 and Ninjaman15. Peter's voice wasn't quite as horrid as Metabad said. It's just that Peter sounded drunk in X7. It's a normal problem with a lot of teens, so I kinda get what Capcom was going for here. Still, it could've been much better.

#4 Ruth Shiraishi
I know for sure that ninjinister is right; Ruth's voice for a teenage boy was girly, which obviously does not work out at all. She was definitely the worst miscast here.

I'm with everyone else here, Mark Gatha really was the best actor for X. A shame he won't be voicing the character any more.

Peter Von Gomm, to me, was so bad he was good. I couldn't help but laugh every time he fired a charge shot and yelled "STOP IT!"

Ruth was horrible, X should not sound like a girl.

I have never heard Ian James Corlett's X voice until now, not my ideal X voice, but not the worst. Sounds a little wooden in the role though, at least to me.
said at 7:31 PM on Tue Jul 19 2011
@Metabad Those are some good points you made.

I wouldn't worry about Mark having left voice acting though, as I doubt there will be another voice-acted X series game. I think that a possible X9 in the future would be made like the first three games.

1. Mark Gatha - I can see why many people wanted Gatha as X in the first place... He is perfect, to be honest; SHINING FINGER!!!
2. Ian James Corlett - The more mature voice isn't as well-made as what the VA did for the original incarnation; in my opinion, it's still good
3. Peter Von Gomm - To me, he made X sound a little blasphemic and awkward sounding... But technically blame Capcom, as they hired the VAs, and most people did find X7 to be the worst of the series... I can simply agree to a fault... And even X's character was a bit wimpy, here.
4. Ruth Shiraishi - Her voice could fit for the original, but not for X... I guess Capcom USA saw Megaman X as the same of his original version at the time.

I agree with everyone Mark is the best but to be fair is there a role where Mark Gatha doesn't nail?
