Voice Compare » Mega Man » Mega Man X

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mega Man X with sound clips and images.
X is a Maverick Hunter created by Dr. Light, and the main character of the Mega Man X side series. He is a Reploid and defends the world from Mavericks. Though he fights as hard as he can, he does so reluctantly, as X is a pacifist at heart.

Thanks to Bombermanp for the sound clips.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Mark Gatha was the best. Mike Donovan was okay, but too deep. Ruth Shiraishi sounded too girlish, and doesn't really suit X's appearance or personality. Peter von Gomm spoke slowly, sounding awkward and thuggish. It's a shame; he has a strong, youthful sounding voice ordinarily, and could've been exceptional with better direction. Mark is the only one who I feel really nails the character, knocking it out of the park with his hot-blooded, committed, and strong-willed performance.

Gatha, FTW. NOBODY gets close to matching him. I love on the sample when he shouts out, "SIGMA!"
As for the rest, I don't believe Ruth to be the worst, because Peter Von Gomm has terrible line delivery whereas at least Ruth sounds natural and I'm not laughing my ass off whenever she is talking.
As for Donovan, eh, it's ok I guess. Passable.

After listening closely, I'm pretty sure Ian Corlett was NOT X in the episode of the Ruby-Spears cartoon. I'm fairly certain it's Michael Donovan, after comparing it to some of his other work at the time.

@Kirbopher Having a listen to some of Corlett's other voice work, I can at least agree that that doesn't really sound like Corlett.

@CatsTuxedo
I can also see that as problematic. Donovan was all over 90s animated action heroes and was indeed credited in the show's credits (though from what I've seen he's been associated with Ring Man, which I do not know the validity of). The closest X sounds to say, Guile, is the line "I must capture Mavericks at all costs!", though lines like "Let's just hope she still works." can understandingly throw someone off that trail.

Corlett seems to be pinned to this role if for no other reason than the mindset that 'a new age Mega Man has to have the same voice actor but be more serious.'

Good intentions, horrible execution.

@rosebr10 I'm also willing to chalk it up to people simply having no clue as to what Vancouver voice actors sound like, which is a pretty big reason why I've been focusing my voice clip efforts on that area.

You know, I think you're right. It wasn't me who came up with the idea of Corlett being X, but I'll take the blame for not looking more into it at the time.

On the bright side, all the other Corlett-Donovan relationships (Roshi and Jusenkyo Guide) make a lot more relative sense now than ever before.

4 Peter Von Gomm- I dunno what is this voice but it's the worst voice in X7

My favorite is definitely Mark Gatha. I think he probably did his best work as X in "MegaMan X: Command Mission".

Mark Gathat's the best. It fits the character and universe.

Ruth Shiraishi is way too high and girly, Ian James Corlett is too deep, and Peter Von Gomm...No...just...no.

Can we have Chris Cason as X someday? He played "a" version of Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken. I think he'd fit X.

@VGAfanatic How about if Jason Spisak voice X?
TrueMyriad

@UltimateSSJ4GokouEX Jason Spisak is good, but he only did a good voice for Kid Flash, Bartz, and Geo Stelar, but would be too high pitched and young to voice X.

Ok, here's my opinion:
Ian James - I agree, his acting is great but his voice does not match the character on screen. That's a miscast in my opinion.

Ruth Shiraishi - Traditional higher-toned Japanese voice acting for a male character. For a western audience I don't think matched. So agreed - the pitch was just too high. Also, the acting was so-so - with words coming out at an awkward pace.

Peter Von Gomm - I also must agree here. His delivery of the lines were too slow. I also couldn't believe him as X.

Mark Gatha - Perfect.

I thought I was going to be able to give you a conflicting opinion but no... you're spot on on all of these.

Ian james Corlett: just ok.

Ruth Shirashi: I'm sorry, but this voice does not fit X at all. She makes him sound WAY too much like a girl.

Peter Von Gomm: I don't know who to blame for this, but why does he speak in such a flat and slow voice?

Mark Gatha: Out of all the voices for X, this guy suited him the best. He will truly be missed and I declare him as the winner!

@Silence I'm gonna say direction is the blame. Peter has a good, youthful-sounding voice. He actually could've been pretty impressive with the right direction.

@NCZ Agreed. Peter can give very energetic and lively performances and his talent was sadly wasted in what could have been a breakthrough role for him.

@Silence To be fair I heard some pretty good voices from Peter(and the others in X7) like the Zoids clip

These voice actors living in Japan were pretty good in Tekken 5 as well

If X makes a future appearance *coughUMvC3cough*
Who would voice him now? If heard people say Yuri Lowenthal, but who could out do Mark Gatha!?
Ninjaman15
said at 4:24 PM on Tue Sep 20 2011
@SM Scorx I wouldn't consider any form of Megaman in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to begin with, since Keiji Inafune already left Capcom and the company itself cancelled two of the franchise's titles. There's always some hidden hope, but then again, it might not come to be.

As for who could voice X in the possible future, I was thinking Yuri too, but for some reason, I can't help but either picture Vic Mignogna or Sam Riegel as well. Ehh...

@Ninjaman15 the thing is keiji really has nothing to do with megamans cancelation... in fact its capcoms own damn fault for screwing us over... keiji actually offered to finish the canceled megaman games.. sadly capcom said no >_

#1 Mark Gatha
As usual, I'm with NCZ all the way for this VC. Mark was the definitely the best one out of the four here. He was the only one who sounded like a real teenage reploid with lots of internal conflicts yet dutiful leadership. More importantly, his performances in X8, CM, and MHX felt very lifelike and realistic, bringing out X's main virtues without any sort of problem doing so.

#2 Ian James Corlett
Yes, he's too deep, but not bad at all. It's a good voice, has some of X's vibes, and one of the better voices in that show. There's really no big problem here, just the pitch of Montel Williams needs to be adjusted.

#3 Peter Von Gomm
For the most part, I agree with both NintendoNate25 and Ninjaman15. Peter's voice wasn't quite as horrid as Metabad said. It's just that Peter sounded drunk in X7. It's a normal problem with a lot of teens, so I kinda get what Capcom was going for here. Still, it could've been much better.

#4 Ruth Shiraishi
I know for sure that ninjinister is right; Ruth's voice for a teenage boy was girly, which obviously does not work out at all. She was definitely the worst miscast here.

I'm with everyone else here, Mark Gatha really was the best actor for X. A shame he won't be voicing the character any more.

Peter Von Gomm, to me, was so bad he was good. I couldn't help but laugh every time he fired a charge shot and yelled "STOP IT!"

Ruth was horrible, X should not sound like a girl.

I have never heard Ian James Corlett's X voice until now, not my ideal X voice, but not the worst. Sounds a little wooden in the role though, at least to me.

@Metabad Those are some good points you made.

I wouldn't worry about Mark having left voice acting though, as I doubt there will be another voice-acted X series game. I think that a possible X9 in the future would be made like the first three games.

1. Mark Gatha - I can see why many people wanted Gatha as X in the first place... He is perfect, to be honest; SHINING FINGER!!!
2. Ian James Corlett - The more mature voice isn't as well-made as what the VA did for the original incarnation; in my opinion, it's still good
3. Peter Von Gomm - To me, he made X sound a little blasphemic and awkward sounding... But technically blame Capcom, as they hired the VAs, and most people did find X7 to be the worst of the series... I can simply agree to a fault... And even X's character was a bit wimpy, here.
4. Ruth Shiraishi - Her voice could fit for the original, but not for X... I guess Capcom USA saw Megaman X as the same of his original version at the time.

I agree with everyone Mark is the best but to be fair is there a role where Mark Gatha doesn't nail? I wish Ian used his Megaman voice for X, would have fit more (Though I understand he needed to differ his voice and sound like a mature Megaman but still). Peter and Ruth are easily the worst. I don't even know which is worst that's how bad they both are.

While she could be a fine actress in her own right, Shiraishi was horribly miscast in this role.
