Howard the Duck

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Howard the Duck with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Marvel Universe

Howard the Duck is a comical hero from Marvel Comics whose  comic book debut was in Adventure into Fear #19 in December of 1973. Howard the Duck is a anthropomorphic duck who is from another planet who was abducted and is dropped into Earth and has had several adventures (that are often highly satirical) and has worked with various Marvel Superheroes. Howard is a cigar-smoking crude mannered duck whom is quite strong and a master in the art of Quack Fu in which he was known for wanting to get back to his home world (and is rather unsuccessful at that) but over the years he seems to be content on Earth. Howard was the first Marvel comics character to received a Movie Adaptation (unfortunately it became a highly infamous critical and commercial bomb when it was released).

Today on the Marvel Universe VC section we take a look at one of Marvel's most infamous comical heroes... HOWARD THE DUCK!

Chip Zien- Yes I know the movie was very despised back then (and unlike other 80's movies the consensus for the movie is still not all that good) but I actually kind of liked Chip's work as Howard. Chip's somewhat nasally voice suited the role well as his performance does suit Howard's comical nature well. Say what you will about the movie but Chip's work on the role was not that bad really.

Kevin Michael Richardson
- I actually rather liked KMR's voice for the role as his somewhat nasally voice with the New York accent does work with the role rather well. The only problem here is that Howard has a brief cameo but Kevin's voice and performance do fit Howard rather well.

Overall both of these guys did well with the role in their own way, while Chip had way more material to work with Kevin did some rather stellar work with what little material he had.

Seth Green is perfect for the role despite not getting all that much. The personality really flows outta his performance.

Kevin Michael Richardson is also a surprising fit and gets to do a pitch he normally doesn't do which is pretty great.

Chip Zien was fine but now how I'd imagine Howard to sound, not helping the fact he was trapped in an abysmal film to begin with.

Sean Gurnsey sounds like he's trying way too hard and also has incredibly awkward and obnoxious delivery. Sounds too young for the role too.

I like the idea of Sean Gurnsey but the performance is so bland

Chip Zien is exactly how I imagine Howard to sound like. He has a great aggressive attitude and his performance is quite solid.

Kevin Michael Richardson sounds incredibly similar to Chip.

Seth Green is good, but kinda lacking compared to the others.

Sean Gurnsey is pretty forced.

Sean sounds way too young for the character I feel. It also doesn't help that his delivery feels incredibly awkward, like he's forcing something he can't do.

Sean sounds way too young imo and his delivery seems pretty obnoxious.

Sticking with Seth

Howard the Duck isn't even a bad character but that movie really did a number to his reputation didn't it? It's a real shame.

Chip Zien's performance isn't terrible, there isn't inherently wrong with his acting, he voiced him well but it doesn't really fit the character at all.

Kevin Michael Richardson surprisingly fits Howard well. He sounds dry and witting and he gets to use a pitch of voice he normally doesn't use which is great. Too bad hasn't done much else with the role since.

Seth Green only has a few lines too but I think he's actually perfect in the role, his gruff voice and almost uninterested voice just gives him the most personality and fits the character the most. I hope he gets to reprise again in the future.

My vote goes to Seth Green.

BONUS: I'd love to see Charlie Adler voice Howard the Duck. Imagine a more cynical Chicken from Cow and Chicken and I think he'd nail it. I could also see him being voiced by Tom Kenny, Rob Paulsen, Steve Blum, Eric Vale, Sonny Straight, Vincent Tong or Brian Drummond.

Seth Green sounds likes the best fit for the sarcastic dry-witted Howard the Duck I'm used to seeing in the comics. Even though it's just a few lines, the personality flows out of his performance the best.

Kevin Michael Richardson is a close second, and even though it's just one's almost TOO cartoony of a voice. Also, I don't know if I'm a big fan of the nasily voice.

Chip Zien is just mediocre. Bad movie aside, his character really has no personality outside of a few duck puns.

I vote Seth Green.

Right now, I call tie between Kevin and Seth. Both manage to capture how Howard is unfazed by his own unusual status in the thick of things.

Seth sounds kinda average, not to mention Howard was only a cameo in GotG.

My vote stays with Chip.

I wonder if Marvel will actually make another Howard the Duck movie after phase 3.

Marvel said no to a Howard movie and it was just a small joke.

@Music Meister Ha Ha! It's just that I've heard people I know getting excited about Howard coming back for another film.

Good thing it's only joke. Cause Marvel should know that they were never going to make a single penny off a reboot. XD

@Ross123 Guaranteed that there won't be a Howard the Duck movie. At least not in Marvel's current planned films.

At most, I see him being an in-joke for fans that shows up in blink-and-you'll-miss-him cameos. Like, if he's a bartender at a space bar in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" or a brief shot of him looking at the darkening skies as Thanos approaches Earth (or whatever). He's more of a joke than an actual, relevant character.
said at 12:44 PM on Tue Jan 27 2015
@TylerMirage Yeah I get you. Hopefully we'll see him in later Marvel movies like GotG2 as you just mentioned where he's nothing but comedic relief.

Oh those poor people who got so excited for another Howard film will be crying their eyes out. :D

I honestly think I'm gonna change my vote to Seth. For such few lines (though having more than Kevin) I think Seth really got how I think Howard should sound. He has just the right amount of dryness in the way he talks and it makes the moment all the funnier I think.

I liked Kevin's Howard voice in Ultimate Spider-Man. But I think if they do an episode of Avengers Assemble starring this character, they should cast Jim Cummings to audition for him. I loved hearing Jim as both Darkwing Duck & Negaduck when I was a wee lad & he should defiantly voice Howard.

I have 2 be different & go with Chip Zien despite the fact that the Howard the Duck film sucked, I haven't seen it but it is 1 of "The Worst Movies Of All Time" so I don't plan on seeing it any time soon + that put me off from ever watching it in the 1st place.

Kevin only had 1 line so there's not really much 2 it.

Also, Howard looks a bit like Donald & since Disney own Marvel they should think about bringing those 2 together & make it they're long lost cousins.

It's too bad the Howard the Duck movie was such a huge flop. : / It didn't follow the comics closely enough, that's what the problem was.

@HyperVoiceActing It shows how terrible the movie was.

@VctrBnsn - Well yeah, that's obvious. But it's not like Chip was horrendous as Howard. It's just that the script didn't give him any good material to work with
said at 9:40 PM on Mon Sep 30 2013
@VctrBnsn I fail to see how that has anything to do with why Chip's performance has less votes.
said at 7:01 AM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@CatsTuxedo I'm saying that the movie left such a bad taste in many peoples mouth that they'd rather vote for the voice with only one line and from a mediocre series. I would lean toward that because nothing is technically wrong with Chip's take. Or maybe people were impressed by KMR's show of range in this instance. Or they didn't listen to any of the clips and only went with the more familiar VA. I try to have more faith in people, but these kind of things happen, especially in comic book compares. I'll admit I was a bit like that when I first joined, but have since tried to be more open minded with all performances.

On a side not, I think Jess Harnell or Ian James Cortlett could do a good Howard.

Well Chip Zien's voice wasn't bad it isn't the voice Howard should have. It would be better for a Ninja Turtle if Chip had been in the 90's movie. That being said I had a brief discussion on Howard's voice in the forums and apparently he's supposed to sound like Burgess Meredith as The Penguin and KMR captures that nicley and I consider that episdoe one of his best performances and hope Howard gets an episode in the future.

That being said I always thought he sounded more like Donald Duck(he's even dressed like him in KMR's pick for him) or Huey, Dewie, or Louie, or maybe Daffy Duck but Kevin really captures ho he should sound either way but I'll give my vote Chip Zien for effort..
