Marvel Universe Marvel Universe

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Hawkeye with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Marvel Universe

Hawkeye is one of the various Marvel Superheroes whom is mainly known as a member of the Avengers in which he made his comic book debut in Tales of Suspense #57 back in September of 1964. Hawkeye's real name is Clint Barton and he was originally a criminal (though often a reluctant one) but has seen the light and is nowadays a fully established crime-fighter. Hawkeye is a normal human whom happens to be a very well trained acrobat and archer in which his main weapon is the various trick arrows that he has. While Hawkeye is normally depicted with a rather abrasive personality (especially if his criminal past is not forgotten about) there are still a pretty good amount of stories that show on how he is a genuinely good guy despite his abrasive smart-alec persona.

Alright folks today on the Marvel Universe VC section we take a look at Marvel's most prominent archer... HAWKEYE! And since this is a rather large VC I must say that none of these guys are really all that bad for the role. The weakest ones here would probably be Tony Daniels and Nolan North but even then their performances were still pretty good. (Though is it just me or does Tony Daniel's voice for Hawkeye sound like Steve Blum trying to sound like Scott McNeil?) Though if I must choose I believe I shall go for Chris Wiggins, Chris Cox and Andrew Francis the most out of all of these guys as the best for Hawkeye here.

Cox is the absolute best with Pasdar as second.

Francis is pretty good though I can't see that voice working well for an older version, also liked North, Baker (even if the writing and his personality isn't all that great in AA), Mercer and Reilly.

The Canadian VA's sound rather bland and I've got no clue what's going on with Gus's voice.

I think my favorite has to be Chris Cox. He really makes Hawkeye a likable character.

Adrian Pasdar is my second favorite. I'd love if he reprised the role one day.

Nolan North is a great casting choice, but he needs more material. If he had more material, then he'd be just as good as Cox and Pasdar, maybe even better.

My vote goes to Chris.

Chris Cox nails Hawkeye's personality and is one of the reasons why he is my favorite character in EMH. My vote goes to him.

Troy Baker is good too. A bit lacking in humor at times, but he does good with what he has.

"I mean, I can't miss... I'm on a team with super-humans. And one god, in case you've forgotten. Even you... well, you climb walls really well. The training is the only thing that makes me special. And if I'm not special, then none of this is worth it. I gave up a lot for this life. I could have been happy with Mockingbir-- Bobbi. We could have had a good, simple life. But I wanted to play with the big boys. And if I miss, it means I'm just another dude with a bow. It means I've been fooling myself this whole time. And that's why I never miss."

Not Much To say; Here are my Top Five Favourite Hawkeye Voices:

4. Andrew Francis
3. Nolan North
2. Adrian Pasdar
1. Chris Cox

Future VA Suggestions:

Sonny Strait would be Excellent as Hawkeye. I imagine a slightly deeper version of his Lupin III voice would be a solid fit.

If he he made his Kanan voice sound more Smug and Sarcastic, I also think Freddie Prinze Jr. would be a natural fit for voicing Clint Barton.

I also recommend Jeff Nimoy, Chris Pine, Jason Cottle and Sean Astin.

Let's get started. I'm gonna go through these voices by the oldest ones first then work my way down.

So for the Marvel Super Heroes show in the 60's both Paul Soles & Chris Wiggins are nothing special but Chris has much more energy than Paul does. Chris is the better one when it comes down to him & Paul

John Reilly sounds decent, but whatever context that scene has, he sounds more like a villain than a good guy.

Tony Daniels has similar problems. Also he sounds way too gruff. Much better as Gambit than Hawkeye.

Nolan North is the perfect guy to cast in this role yet he's completely wasted here. If Ultimate Alliance got to flesh out Hawkeye character, he'd have my vote on this compare.

Andrew Francis. Is this supposed to be a teen Hawkeye? If so, it works for a younger Hawkeye but for an older Hawkeye, doesn't work very well.

Adrian Pasdar is good here. Much better than his Iron Man & Tony Stark

Chris Cox combines all the things that make Hawkeye great. He can be abrasive, a smartass & cocky, but he also makes him likeable. The acting feels very genuine. A huge standout from Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Amanda Celine Miller is perfect as the female Hawkeye. She's on par with Chris in this role.

Troy Baker's problem isn't actually the voice itself, but rather the material he's given. The one liners are cringy and the jokes are really unfunny. They also made Hawkeye very obnoxious. AA Hawkeye is probably my least favorite versions of Hawkeye. It's a shame because Troy Baker's voice is a natural fit for Hawkeye.

Matthew Mercer as you can tell was brought in to imitate Troy Baker, but he has even less to work with than Nolan does.

Chris Cox gets my vote on this VC.

There are a few VC that deal with multiple incarnations of a character, including the Batman one (which has Terry McGinnis, the Red Son Batman, and Dick Grayson), Clayface, Crimson Dynamo, and Hawkman.

VC thoughts update

Chris Cox is just amazing as Hawkeye. He sounds like an abrasive smart-aleck, yet he also manages to sound friendly.

Amanda Celine Miller fits the Kate Bishop version perfectly. She's just so energetic and hilarious in the role.

Troy Baker is also great in the role. He sounds like a smart-aleck and he does seem to be having fun with delivering the quips.

Chris Wiggins is pretty awesome too. He does sound abrasive and smug and his delivery is pretty solid.

Paul Soles nails the smart-aleck side of Hawkeye quite well. He has some pretty well delivered lines, and I find it really interesting that he makes Hawkeye sound more intellectual.

I also enjoyed Tony Daniels, Nolan North, Andrew Francis, Adrian Pasdar and Matthew Mercer in the role.

John Reilly is okay, but he makes Hawkeye sound too much like a jerk.

@Troodon2 I'd also like to see him voice Booker DeWitt, maybe if he ever makes an anime appearance.

Conversely, I'd also like to hear Troy as Iron Man. It helps that the Japanese voice of Iron Man (which Matt dubbed over in the animated features) is Keiji Fujiwara...

...who is the most consistent Iron Man, Booker DeWItt, & current Joker.

So, yeah...their fates are intertwined.

Chris Cox really shined as Hawkeye, he has a great young adult type of voice, one that was great at being funny, sarcastic with quips and still manage to make him really likeable too. I wish he'd reprise more often. He nailed it!

Troy Baker is a decent second, the biggest problem with his take is just how painfully unlikable and unfunny his Hawkeye can be and it hurts since he is a natural fit for a role like Hawkeye. He did the role better in some of the other non-Loeb cartoons but I prefer Cox more.

Adrian Pasdar...finally an Avenger who he actually fits as. He sorts cocky and arrogant and yet still likeable enough. Honestly Loeb should have cast him as Hawkeye in the current cartoons instead of Baker and as Iron Man.

Nolan North is a natural fit for the role of Hawkeye but he doesn't have much else to work with which is a shame.

John Reilly isn't too bad actually, he has some humour and charm but is kind of annoying too.

Between the two voices from the sixties, Paul Soles was way more fitting than Chris Wiggins. Paul has more of a cocky marksman type of voice Hawkeye should have that Wiggins lacks.

Tony Daniels sounds too gruff and Wolverine like.

Andrew Francis works well for a younger version of Hawkeye, he could work for an older version.

Amanda Celine Miller is hilarious as the Kate Bishop Hawkeye. I think she's perfect for that role actually.

Chris Cox gets my vote.

BONUS: Considering the fact both he and Chris Cox voiced Peter Corbeau....how about Alex Zahara as Hawkeye? It'd be a bit of a casting gag since he's Lockon Stratos another marksman. I could also see someone like Will Friedle or Eric Vale being great as Hawkeye too.

@Autovolt If Nolan North ever got to reprise Hawkeye he'd probably give a performance on par with Chris Cox. And based off of his various performances in his VA'ing career, playing the the sarcastic character with a bit of charm, is right up Nolan's alley.

1. Chris Cox
Sorry Jeremy Renner, but Chris is the definitive Hawkeye. He is cocky, arrogant and fast with his mouth, but he manages to keep all those traits likeable and charming (not an easy task). Plus, his chemistry with Fred Tatasciore's Hulk was just pure gold. I still would love to see them get their own spin-off show XD

2. Adrian Pasdar
See casting people? Is not so hard to find comic book characters for Pasdar that he is actually fit to play. Pasdar naturally arrogant and care-free voice fits Hawkeye perfectly. One of the very few TSHSS performances/voices that I could see work in more serious/comic-accurate show.

3. Nolan North
Nolan was born to play this part, but sadly to this date he has only played the character in small DLC. Nolan's charm and charisma are doing their best to elevate the role, but he unfortunately simply has too little to work with. Please Marvel, let him reprise the role in something!

4. Chris Wiggins/Paul Soles
Their acting is little clunky and I'm not really sold on the voices, but they do have certain charm to them. I could see them work as any other superhero than Hawkeye.

5. John Reilly
I like on paper what he is attempting with the role, but he goes little bit too far and just becomes annoying. Very least he should have been less nasally.

6. Troy Baker
Oh Troy, what have they done to you?! This should have been spot-on casting choice! Troy could easily nominate this poll, but strangely they went to completely wrong direction with this character. Yes, Hawkeye can be quite comical and sometimes even little goofy. I'm not criticizing that. But dear God, AA-Hawkeye is more like exaggeration of people's criticism of Hawkeye after the first Avengers movie (= useless loser, who shouldn't even be part of the team), rather than actual human being. I'm not blaming Troy, since he has arguably the worst material to work with from all of the main cast of AA (and that's saying a lot). If you want to see this version of Hawkeye done right, read some Matt Fraction's Hawkeye comics.

Sadly, I don't feel that any of the Troy's reprises redeem him, since outside of AA (for example, The Rise of the Technovore) Hawkeye is pretty much just impersonal SHIELD agent, so Troy really doesn't have anything to work with in those projects either. Hopefully Troy can someday truly showcase his range and bring Hawkeye from the comics to life.

7. Tony Daniels
Generic "gruff-tough-guy-voice!, but then again, Hawkeye was written as such in the show.

8. Andrew Francis
Ugh! Have I mentioned lately how much I disliked de-aging characters? I admit, this is more my personal bias than any objective fault in Andrew's performance, but this was always my own subjective list, so who cares.

Not rating Amanda Miller, since I don't think that she should be in this compare. Kate Bishop is completely her own character like how Wally West is different character from Barry Allen.

I like Adrian's take too. It is too bad he hasn't had the chance to reprise. His performance really works for Hawkeye's personality.

A shout out to Amanda Celine Miller too. Her voice is exactly how I imagined Kate Bishop to sound.

1-: Chris Cox and Troy Baker (Tie): Both actors are a perfect fit for the character. Their voices are kind of similar, but they both deliver Clint's spunk and snarkiness perfectly. I think if Troy got much better material, he would be my favorite. As of now, they're both great, and I don't know if I should change my vote to Troy or stick with Chris.
2-: Andrew Francis: The voice sounds a little too cocky, and he kind of sounds like a jock at points, but that seems to be with the way Hawkeye is written here. I think he would excel if he voiced the main version.
3-:Adrian Pasdar: I'm a little mixed on his take, but overall, it's fairly enjoyable. The voice is a little inconsistent, but Adrian seems to be a much better fit for Hawkeye over Iron Man.
4-: Nolan North: Disappointing, to say the least. Nolan sounds way too deep and forced here. If Nolan got much better voice direction, he would probably be my favorite, I know the guy can fit Hawkeye like a glove if given another chance.
5-:Paul Soles: Again, way too deep, but the delivery is pretty good so I'll give him a pass.
6-:John Reilly: He sounds way too old. That combined with poor writing makes this depiction of Hawkeye get on my nerves.
7-: Chris Wiggins: Just plain miscast.
8-: Tony Daniels: I don't fully blame him, as I'm sure the voice directors had a hand in it too, but did anyone think trying to make Hawkeye sound growly and intimidating would work?

I like Amanda Celine Miller as Kate Bishop, but I'm sure there's tons of other actresses that could do better in the role, and it isn't fair to compare her with everyone else.

@UltimateCharm Yeah, but it's kind of like adding Lady Deadpool to Deadpool's compare. Though in hindsight that'd make sense, the Deadpool's are technically the same person form alternate universes.

My thoughts on this though this could be hairy since it could come down to people either not voting for her because she's not Clint, or voting for her because they like Kate more and not because they think Amanda is the best voice. Their will of course be middle ground to both extremes where she'll be fairly judged by both sides, I'm just saying that it may not lead to the fairest compare. Just one opinion though.

I didn't think Troy's performance was different enough to get a new clip, but I'm glad they did so. He's better now.

 2 Shout Outs!
1.Chris Cox. He fits the role fantastically well and is one of the best performances in a Marvel show. 9/10
2. Nolan North- Nolan doesn't have a lot to work with but he does make the role at least memorable and he does it well. 7.5

3. Andrew Francis- his voice sounds young but it fits well. 7/10

4. Adrian Pasdar. I think he does the role actually pretty good but it's not as great as a couple other performances. 6/10

5. John Reilly. He sounds pretty darn chipper for Hawkeye but I think he does a okay job. 5.5/10

6. Troy Baker. I'm sorry, I still don't like this performance. i don't know what it is it's just Troy rubs me the wrong way so much as Hawkeye. 4.5/10

7. Paul Soles. Somewhat the same on what I think of Chris. 4.5/10

8. Chris Wiggins. It almost sounds like a newscaster not fitting hawkeye that well. 4.5/10

9. Tony Daniels. I don't get why he even has this voice it sounds too raspy. 4/10

My view:

1. Chris Cox (No big surprise.)
2. Troy Baker (MUCH better in the Avengers TV series.)
3. Adrian Pasdar (Who knew?!)
4. Andrew Francis (I don't mind that he is portrayed younger than the rest.)
5. Nolan North (Alright.)
6. John Reilly (Ok.)
7. Chris W/Paul Soles (Not bad.)
8. Tony Daniels (Bit of a miscast. He's pretty much using his Wolverine voice here.)

Chris Cox - THE BEST. Put so much personality in that role.
Adrian Pasdar - Better than his Iron Man and MUCH better than his Captain America. Would like to see him do it again.
Andrew Francis - Good for the series.
Troy Baker - I know he could do better. Lets see what he brings in Avengers Assemble.
Chris Wiggins/Paul Soles - Pretty good.
John Reilly - Entertaining.
Nolan North - Not a whole lot, really. He could do better.
Tony Daniels - Really?

Am I the only one who likes Troy Baker's Hawkeye?

I mean, sure it's not the best voice work he's ever done, but it's certainly not the worst.

@MilanTheVillain01 He sounds better than he did on the episode after hearing him again.
said at 11:53 PM on Wed Feb 13 2013
@MilanTheVillain01 He did okay, there just wasn't much to his Hawkeye's character which is were the performance took the biggest hit. It just did have the energy or edge that previous hawkeye's had.

I was hoping that Troy's performance wouldn't be added, at least not yet. Troy sounded terrible, voice wise he was okay he gave a good deep but not too deep. However performance he sounded wooden and even bored at times only when he yelled did he show any emotion.
I'm hoping Troy is better in Avengers Assemble, he can't be worst...

@Music Meister I agree, however don't blame him, blame the USM director for making him look bad. :/ He should be bettter in Avengers Assemble I hope...

MoA? Do you have a source? Even so it's a fair possiblity. :P
Either way, theres a wasted potential (Baker) for possibly a great Hawkeye performance. :/

It mentions MoA talking about AA, which makes me think they're in charge of it.

man for once there is a role Nolan north did bad in! well ok its not really bad.. but more....EXTREAMLY CORNY... when i think of Hawkeye i think of him as a cocky superhero with a hard core attitude. but Nolan is acting like a stereotypical superhero..and it stinks! going with Chris and Adrin.. such a shame tho.. Nolan should have done this role flawlessly

My ranks:

1. Chris Cox- Nailed it! Love him in Avengers EMH
2. Andrew Francis- A little on the annoying side, but given the nature of that particular incarnation of Hawkeye, it's pretty good
3. Adrian Pasdar- Would love to see what he could do in a more "adult" oriented series!
4. Nolan North- Given that both MUA games had really cheesy dialogue to begin with, he wasn't half bad)
5 John Reilly- Hmmm, not quite how I remember him sounding when I watched Iron Man many years ago, but I like it!
6. Chris Wiggins/Paul Soles- I don't really like either of these guys. Granted, for the time, I'm sure it was considered top notch But they both sound too deep and hammy for my ears.
7. Tony Daniels- My least favorite of the pack. For one, his voice is waaay too deep and second, I don't like that he sounds so evil. Reminds me a little of Cal Dodd's Wolverine in the 1992 X-Men series.

1. Chris Cox- Chris' performace is one of my favorite in AEMH. He should off his cocky and stubborn side and his smart-ass side but was also fitting for his more serious scenes. He's a good example of the voice work in the show.

2. Andrew Francis- When I heard he would play Hawkeye I was a little bit worried and curious on how he would play the role (though to be fair at the time the only role of his I was familur with was Gil) but once I heard him all that worry was gone. He got the cocky and smart-ass side of Hawkeye but still worked in more serious moments (also his chemistry with Ball's Black Widow was good). Seriously if Andrew's Hawkeye didn't sound so young I would put him either as good or better then Chirs' Hawkeye (I know he was a teenager in the series)

3. Adrian Pasdar- I was so surprised with this one. For the kid shows version of Hawkeye he had most of the personality down to a T. I would like to hear more in a more mature show.

4. John Reilly- I feel his performace is underrated. For the first part of the season he played Hawkeye in a more relaxed and smart-ass and did show off his cocky and hot-head side but I felt his performace in the second season was so much better. We saw a darker side to Hawkeye as he was so angry at Ironman he even fought him a couple times and Johny did play his anger really well.

5. Chirs Wiggins/Paul Soles- I'll admit that I don't always like "golden age" voice actors (sometimes too hammy or just don't sound right) but I was pleasently surprised by these two. Chris played Hawkeye's more serious side while Paul played him more comicaly. Both did pretty well though I haven't seen the show so I haven't heard more then the clips provided.

6. Nolan North- His Hawkeye wasn't bad. It does sound a bit hammy but sounded like it had potential if given more lines. Also does anyone else think his voice sounds like Skip Stellrecht's Might Guy?

7. Tony Daniels- Okay who thought this voice fit Hawkeye, it's too deep and too raspy like it would fit Wolferine more. Heck Tony actually used this voice (or some variation) to play Wolferine (and i will agree with Pokejedservo that it does sound at times like Steven Blum trying to sound like Scott McNeil). Now his performace is better...to a degree. When it comes to Hawkeye's hot headed and stubborn side he fits but when it comes to more serious and dramatic scenes it's a little hard to take seriously.

@Music Meister I still want to ignore Troy as Hawkeye for now but I'd put his performance in Ultimate Spiderman in 6th, his uninteresting/wooden performance is boring tonlisten to and at least with the golden age voices they have rememberable performances. Still he's better than North just because his voice is more fitting then North's (who still sounds like Might Guy to me)

@Music Meister I've seen two episodes of Avengers Assembled and after seeing Troy there I will be moving him up.
Troy got the "balls of steel" that we love about Hawkeye and his one liners and sarcastic comments really bring personality to him and at the same time he sounded like a badass when he needed to get serious.
Troy is a very close second, Chris still fits more for Hawkeye and I prefer a slightly higher voice for Hawkeye and he just brings more to the character but if Troy keeps up the good work I might even move him up higher.

My vote's for Chris Cox, but Andrew Francis is a *very* close second. Adrian Pasdar's was quite good too, and could easily pass off as a more "mature"-er version/in a less-kid-oriented series.

I'm going with Andrew Francis but I find Chris Cox, Andrew Francis, and surprisingly Adrian Pasdar and Paul Soles to be the best voices. Nolan North is good but he only had a few lines and can't really be judged and I don't remember John Reily or Tony Daniels sounding so horrible.
