OTHER LUPIN THE 3RD COMPARES
Lupin the 3rd

Voice Compare » Lupin the 3rd » Inspector Koichi Zenigata

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Inspector Koichi Zenigata with sound clips and images.
Inspector Koichi Zenigata is an Interpol agent who's life mission is to capture Arsene Lupin III. He was originally a Tokyo Police Officer until he transferred to the ICPO so he could follow Lupin across any country.

Despite being enemies with Lupin they also seem to have a small friendship. There are numerous occasions where Zenigata has cried when he believes Lupin to be dead; often saying that if Lupin had let himself be arrested the death could've been prevented.

Zenigata is sometimes portrayed as a bumbling fool, but he is also very clever and can often see through Lupin's disguises. Even though Zenigata's life goal is to capture Lupin, a small part of him wants Lupin to escape on the rare occasions he succeeds; so he can further enjoy the thrill of the chase.

Inspector Koichi Zenigata was first voiced in an English dub for the JAL version of The Secret of Mamo. This is also known as the Toho or HK version. There are no official credits for this dub so the voice actor is unknown.

Zenigata was voiced by David Povall in the Streamline English dubs. David Povall voiced Zenigata in the original English dub of The Castle of Cagliostro, a new English dub of Secret of Mamo and 2 episodes of the Part II TV Series. These two episodes #145 "Albatross; The Wings of Death" and #155 "Farwell, Beloved Lupin" were directed by Anime Guru Hayao Miyazaki who also directed The Castle of Cagliostro. Streamline released these 2 episodes in 2 individuals releases called Tales of the Wolf: Volume 1 and Tales of the Wolf: Volume 2. It was also re-released as Lupin III: Greatest Capers.

AnimEigo's English dub of The Fuma Conspiracy had Zenigata voiced by Marc Matney. This was later re-released by Discotek.

For the MangaUK English dubs of Lupin III: Bye Bye Liberty Crisis (which isn't licensed for Region 1)  and Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo, Zenigata is voiced by Sean Barret.

Manga Entertainment created their own English dub for The Castle of Cagliostro and in this version Zenigata is voiced by Dougary Grant.

Geneon Entertainment (previously known as Pioneer Entertainment) created English dubs for the TV Series Part II (79 out of 155 episodes) and a brand new English dub for The Secret of Mamo. In the Geneon dubs Zenigata is voiced by Jake Martin (A.K.A. Dan Martin).

Funimation Entertainment licensed several Lupin III TV Specials and Movies, and in these English dubs Zenigata is voiced by Philip Wilburn.

*Special thanks to Satoshi who provided the JAL clip!

EDITOR'S OPINION

Although some of these voice actors had very different voices from each other I'd say they all were mostly fitting for this character.

My favorite voices for Zenigata are by Philip Wilburn and Dan Martin.

I have to with Dan Martin since Zenigata is suppose to be an over the top comedy relief. And Martin does this perfectly.

Though in all fairness Goro Naya himself hasn't been meeting his own standards as of late. Sadly his throat cancer has let to a very grating throaty performance. And like most of the original cast, he hasn't been showing the same level of enthusiasm as he used to. So in other words Goro Naya in his PRIME was by far the best Zenigata.

To brutally honest, I don't really think any of these voice actors do Zenigata justice. Matney and Martin sound riduculously overdone, the unknown voice actor sounds flat and generic, Povall and Barrett are mistcast, Willburn sounds ok I guess, though a bit dull. Grant is the only one that sounds half-way decent. He seems to be trying to imitate Goro Naya, but not as charming nor as funny. Or I might just be biased to the totally awesome Goro Naya:).

No one's ever going to be as funny as Goro Naya. Yamadera's pretty cool though.

That's Jack Grimes as so-called Ed Scott in the JAL dub.

Going with CAGLIOSRO, I really loved Doughary Grant's Zenigata. He was zany, funny, and obviously was having fun. He did sound considerably scratchy, but the exuberance he brings to the role was spot-on. His bad acting scene was a riot. Perhaps because of that, I found Povall's take very jarring. His delivery isn't bad at all, but there was something about his tone of voice that seemed very... strange, almost like Ernie/Kermit the Frog, which I found a bit odd. I'm not saying he did a bad job, but I personally found Doughary funnier.

@ig37

Zenigata's SUPPOSED to be over-the-top. Haven't you ever heard Goro Naya's performance?

They are all good, but Phillip Wilburn's was the most believable as a person. To often I think voice actors go to over the top for my taste.
