Goemon Ishikawa XIII

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Goemon Ishikawa XIII with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Lupin the 3rd

Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation of the historical samurai of the same name.

He is a martial arts master and has displayed near superhuman abilities such as slicing bullets in half before they make contact and splitting a bolt of lightning. With his sword Zantetsuken he is nearly invincible in a fight.

Goemon is usually a quiet person and participates in Lupin's capers less frequently than Jigen and Fujiko. He does not take another' life unless challenged to a duel. He often meditates and trains to improve himself and eliminate any weaknesses.

Goemon Ishikawa XIII was first voiced in an English dub for the JAL version of The Secret of Mamo. This is also known as the Toho or HK version. There are no official credits for this dub so the voice actor is unknown.

Goemon was voiced by Steve Kramer in 2/3 Streamline Lupin III projects. Steve Kramer voiced Goemon in the original English dub of The Castle of Cagliostro and 2 episodes of the Part II TV Series. Streamline released these 2 episodes in 2 individuals releases called Tales of the Wolf: Volume 1 and Tales of the Wolf: Volume 2. It was also re-released as Lupin III: Greatest Capers.

AnimEigo's English dub of The Fuma Conspiracy had Goemon voiced by Mark Franklin. This was later re-released by Discotek Media.

In Streamline's English dub for The Secret of Mamo Goemon was not voiced by Steve Kramer but by Kirk Thornton.

For the MangaUK English dubs of Lupin III: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty and Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo, Goemon is voiced by Garrick Hagon.

Manga Entertainment created their own English dub for The Castle of Cagliostro and in this version Goemon is voiced by Michael Gregory.

Geneon Entertainment (previously known as Pioneer Entertainment) created English dubs for the TV Series Part II (79 out of 155 episodes) and a brand new English dub for The Secret of Mamo. In the Geneon dubs Goemon is voiced by Lex Lang.

Funimation Entertainment licensed several Lupin III TV Specials and Movies, and in these English dubs Goemon is voiced by Mike McFarland. McFarland reprises the role in Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.

As much as I love Lex Lang, I'm really not a fan of his voice for Goemon. It's too...."loud" for the character and not nearly stoic enough. Just doesn't have that "samurai" feel to it. Though half of that I feel was more of the script's fault than the voice direction.

I honestly loved Michael Gregory's performance in Castle of Cagliostro the best, being very deep and stoic. Really wish we could have heard more of it.

I also loved Kirk Thornton and Mike McFarland's performances for the same reason (though their voices weren't as deep).

Steve Kramer I found to be awful, though just like with Lex it was really more of the script's fault. Should have worn an asbestos SUIT!

I don't really get what people see in Steve Kramer's Goemon. He sounds way too high and throaty for the character.

The Streamline guys must not have thought him that fitting either, considering they replaced him with Ardwight Chamberlain in "Mamo".

Let's see...!

1) Kirk Thornton
2) Mike McFarland
3) Lex Lang
4) Michael Gregory
5) Steve Kramer
6) Mark Franklin
7) Garret Hagon
8) UVA (said to be William Ross)

Some users did some sleuthing a while back and got it confirmed that Michael Gregory was Goemon in the Castle of Cagliostro, and not Epcar. Discotek's upcoming release is said to confirm it for their credits. Still, regardless of who it was, they were good in the role. I'm just used to Thornton and some other takes before that.

The UVA is likely to be William Ross going by the sample, though like with his other cameos in Frontier dubs, sometimes having the voice director fill in for a role doesn't always work.

Kirk Thornton reeks awesomeness in this role

I'll compare the actors here a little differently to what I did for the other Lupin characters:

1. Kirk Thornton - He's the perfect stoic, quiet, straight forward and serious Sumarai. The performance and accent is perfect. That's all I can say.

2. Mike McFarland - If only the voice director of he (whichever) decided to keep the Japanese accent he used for some of the movies because he defiantly would've been my favourite, but I really enjoy his performances as they are.

3. Steve Kramer - It is only one line but... it's a damn good one line!

4. Lex Lang - Overrated in this role. He has the serious demeanour but his performance and voice is just so generic if he was using the voice for a different character I wouldn't tell he difference.

The rest have decent performances but odd deliveries and voices for Goemon.

Oops, forgot Richard Epcar. I'll put him above Lex, I liked the performance but its a little weird hearing him as Jigen and Goemon too.

1. (Tie) Lex Lang & Kirk Thornton- Both were wonderfully natural choices for the role here as they suited the stoic swordsman rather well. Sure Lex had a bit more material to work with but Kirk's work was really good too.

2. Richard Epcar- Not as good as the previous two but it does work with the role fairly well by its own merits. I mean yes Richard did voice Goemon first but its a little odd to hear him as Goemon since he is more known for voicing Jigen.

3. Mike McFarland- Mike's performance is pretty good but he does lose some points on how inconsistent his voice can be as sometimes it sounds like he is doing a Japanese accent and sometimes it doesn't.

4. (Tie) UVA & Mark Franklin- They do sound like they are from an old english dub of a Martial Arts movie but their voices are actually not bad and do kind of work with the role in a way.

5. Steve Kramer- Kind of generic but decent

6. Garrick Hagon- His voice sounds a bit strange and his performance sounds like he is trying a little too hard to act like an old fashioned Samurai.

Kirk Thornton is definitely my pic. He's the only one who actually sounded like a samurai. The rest didn't sound memorable or interesting. I guess Mike McFarland would be a fairly distant second though.

Never liked Lex Lang, he sounds boring and generic, Steve Kramer is bland and uninspiring. Epcar was pretty good in Cagliostro, but I like McFarland(he's probubly the ONLY voice I really like in Funimation's dub) the best; I aways thought Goemon worked best with a little bit of addittue.

Goemon doesn't have much dialogue in THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, so it's a bit difficult to evaluate his overall performance. Under the circumstances, though, both Richard and Steve did pretty good, although I personally think I have to say I think Richard has the advantage because he actually sounds like a stoic warrior. Kramer is a bit too raspy sounding for my tastes, although he's not too bad considering the circumstances.

Kirk Thornton is just a perfect choice. "The serious Samurai" is just something hes good at, and the accent he gives helps to. Epcar and McFarland are both a close 2nd for me. I don't really like the others. I just don't feel like Lex Lang is truly Goemon. His voice really feels better for more rebellious characters, but hes not bad too bad compared to the others. The unknown voice actor is definitely my least favorite probably do to his scripting. The way he talks is so awkward and wordy and just feel incredibly unnatural.

Also I don't its really possible to get a longer Kramer clip. I have streamline dub of Castle of Cagliostro, but he hardly says much there so I don't think it would really help. He wasn't very good either
