Voice Compare » Lupin the 3rd » Goemon Ishikawa XIII
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Goemon Ishikawa XIII with sound clips and images.
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation of the historical samurai of the same name.
He is a martial arts master and has displayed near superhuman abilities such as slicing bullets in half before they make contact and splitting a bolt of lightning. With his sword Zantetsuken he is nearly invincible in a fight.
Goemon is usually a quiet person and participates in Lupin's capers less frequently than Jigen and Fujiko. He does not take life unless challenged to a duel. He often meditates and trains to improve himself and eliminate any weaknesses.
Goemon Ishikawa XIII was first voiced in an English dub for the JAL version of The Secret of Mamo. This is also known as the Toho or HK version. There are no official credits for this dub so the voice actor is unknown.
Goemon was voiced by Steve Kramer in 2/3 Streamline Lupin III projects. Steve Kramer voiced Goemon in the original English dub of The Castle of Cagliostro and 2 episodes of the Part II TV Series. These two episodes #145 "Albatross; The Wings of Death" and #155 "Farwell, Beloved Lupin" were directed by Anime Guru Hayao Miyazaki who also directed The Castle of Cagliostro. Streamline released these 2 episodes in 2 individuals releases called Tales of the Wolf: Volume 1 and Tales of the Wolf: Volume 2. It was also re-released as Lupin III: Greatest Capers.
AnimEigo's English dub of The Fuma Conspiracy had Goemon voiced by Mark Franklin. This was later re-released by Discotek.
In Streamline's English dub of The Secret of Mamo Goemon was not voiced by Steve Kramer but by Kirk Thornton.
For the MangaUK English dubs of Lupin III: Bye Bye Liberty Crisis (which isn't licensed for Region 1) and Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo, Goemon is voiced by Garrick Hagon.
Manga Entertainment created their own English dub for The Castle of Cagliostro and in this version Goemon is voiced by Richard Epcar (who also played Jigen in the Geneon English dubs).
Geneon Entertainment (previously known as Pioneer Entertainment) created English dubs for the TV Series Part II (79 out of 155 episodes) and a brand new English dub for The Secret of Mamo. In the Geneon dubs Goemon is voiced by Lex Lang.
Funimation Entertainment licensed several Lupin III TV Specials and Movies, and in these English dubs Goemon is voiced by Mike McFarland.

Never liked Lex Lang, he sounds boring and generic, Steve Kramer is bland and uninspiring. Epcar was pretty good in Cagliostro, but I like McFarland(he's probubly the ONLY voice I really like in Funimation's dub) the best; I aways thought Goemon worked best with a little bit of addittue.

Goemon doesn't have much dialogue in THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, so it's a bit difficult to evaluate his overall performance. Under the circumstances, though, both Richard and Steve did pretty good, although I personally think I have to say I think Richard has the advantage because he actually sounds like a stoic warrior. Kramer is a bit too raspy sounding for my tastes, although he's not too bad considering the circumstances.

Kirk Thornton is just a perfect choice. "The serious Samurai" is just something hes good at, and the accent he gives helps to. Epcar and McFarland are both a close 2nd for me. I don't really like the others. I just don't feel like Lex Lang is truly Goemon. His voice really feels better for more rebellious characters, but hes not bad too bad compared to the others. The unknown voice actor is definitely my least favorite probably do to his scripting. The way he talks is so awkward and wordy and just feel incredibly unnatural.
Also I don't its really possible to get a longer Kramer clip. I have streamline dub of Castle of Cagliostro, but he hardly says much there so I don't think it would really help. He wasn't very good either
