Voice Compare » Lord of the Rings » Gollum / Smeagol

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Gollum / Smeagol with sound clips and images.
Smeagol was an ordinary Hobbit who came into possession of the One Ring and deteriorated into the being now known as Gollum (named after his habit of making a throaty swallowing noise on occasion). After losing the One Ring to Bilbo Baggins, he would pursue the One Ring for the rest of his unnaturally extended life. Smeagol and Gollum exist as two personalities in the same being and often quarrel with each other when they are alone.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Brother Theodore's rendition is very convincing, not to mention fun to listen to.

Peter Woodthrope's acting is pretty solid, but his voice lacks the creaturesque quality that makes the character.

Andy Serkis does a good job at making Gollum sound vicious and ill-tempered and Smeagol sound pitiful and benign, but what is more impressive is that both voices never sound like they're coming from completely different people, which captures the duality of the character nicely.

Quinton Flynn sounds like he has potential, but he has too minor of a role to really show the audience what he can do.

Daran Norris, while having the voice down-pat, isn't quite strong enough ("My riiing" is particularly weak).

In the end, I'm going with Serkis, with Brother Theodore a close second.

I'm surprised, I didn't know the voice of Kakashi and Gaara voiced Gollum o.o i'm voting for Andy Serkis because in the trilogy it's for sure his best, they really brought out Gollum as a devious creature. But i'm going to give Liam O'Brien a lot of credit as well, he did a VERY good job voicing Gollum

Liam is by far the Troy Baker's Joker to Andy Serkis's Mark Hamill Joker.

And while there are spots that sounds a tad americanized Liam does solid job capturing Andy Serkis as Gollum for the most part.

I think Scott McNeil would do a great voice for Gollum/Smeaton, but Andy Serbis would always be my favourite actor to voice Gollum/Smeagol in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001, 2002 & 2003) as I'm pleased Andy's in first place with 86.4% (70 votes).

Liam O'Brien's Gollum is spot-on. Most Serkis impressions I've heard sound more like an evil version of Stitch rather than Gollum, but Liam's impression is so thorough and natural that it's identical to the original. I need to play this game eventually and see more of his performance.

At the moment, I'm having a hard time deciding who I like better between Andy Serkis and Brother Theodore.

Wow Liam is doing a great at voicing Gollum.

It's neck & neck between him and Andy for me I think.

Though I think my vote will stay with Andy since he made Gollum as we know him but it's still tough to call.

Andy of course, but Liam is a dang good replacement. A lot of actors can imitate Gollum, but Liam seems to capture a lot of the subtle things Andy had that others couldn't quite get. I love in the game when Gollum starts singing to himself, and it was that moment when I realized that Liam was doing more than a Serkis impression, he was doing the performance just as great.

Wooooooah! Another reason why Liam is one of my favourite voice actors working today! Stellar work as Gollum! In fact the only reason I'm putting him behind Serkis is because it was, sadly, just an impersonation and it didn't feel like he made it his own take.

1. Andy
1.5. Liam
2. Brother
3. Daran
4. Peter & Quinton

Have to give this one to Andy Serkis. He was so creepy and deranged in that part. And he pulled off the "sweeter" Smeagol aspect of the character very nicely, too.

Brother Theodore is also very good. A properly deranged voice. Gollum doesn't look all that frightening in that film, but that voice is.

Quinton Flynn is too brief to really judge and Daran Norris is too deep.

Man, Liam O'Brien sounds almost exactly like Andy! If I didn't know I'd probably think it was Andy again.

Andy Serkis is Hands Down the best as Gollum.

Brother Theodore is 2nd while Daran is 3rd.

Quinton only had a line or 2 so it was too brief to be considered better than the others.

Peter was just using a normal voice making his performance weak.

@Ross123 Yes, he dotes an awesome job as Gollum.

Both the Bakshi film and the radio drama have the best casting choices of all LOTR adaptations, IMHO.

The 1981 drama has two actors from the Bakshi films: Peter Woodthorpe (Gollum) and Michael Graham Cox (Boromir).

The radio drama also features a casting choice that most live-action LOTR fans like you will find ironic and interesting: Ian Holm as Frodo.

@Polyester Funk My favorite part is when Bilbo remembers his encounter with Gollum. Woodthorpe was quite funny when the memory begins and when he tries to guess the answer of the riddle, but quite desperate and insane when he finds out the ring is gone:

The memory begins at 3:04 in this clip.

There's actually a point in the FOTR game where Gollum has a conversation with Aragorn and gives him a swordfish (!?!?!) to use as a weapon. No, I'm not making this up.

It's pretty secret, but it happens during the Amon Hen level. I know it's for real and gone through and done it several times, but I unfortunately don't have the proper equipment to record it, let alone put it on this site.

Maybe someone else with more time on their hands could track this secret down with the intent of recording it? Because just using his one line from the opening video just seems wrong.

Number 3: Daran Norris - Good voice, good acting.
Number 4: Quinton Flynn - The clip is too short, I can't judge it properly.

Andy Serkis : For me, he nailed the role, he IS Gollum/Smeagol.

Brother Theodore : A good performance, really creepy, despite the appearance of Gollum in this cartoon, he looks like a big frog.

Quiton Flynn : Too short, I can't juge his performance.

Daran Norris : He's fine but a little too deep.

Peter Woodthorpe : His acting is fine but he sounds too......I don't know. Normal ? And kinda forgettable.
