Franchise: Lord of the Rings

Bilbo Baggins is a hill-dwelling, easily-flustered hobbit who lived a peaceful life until Gandalf and thirteen dwarves come along and hire him as a burglar in their quest to reclaim the kingdom of Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug. During this journey, Bilbo manages to steal a magical ring from the humanoid creature Gollum. Following the fall of Smaug, Bilbo becomes wealthy and lives an enlongated life thanks to the ring's powers. Eventually, the ring begins to prey on Bilbo's well-being and he is reluctant to relinquish its possession. Ultimately, he leaves the ring with his nephew Frodo Baggins upon setting out to live in retirement in Rivendell.

For me Orson is the winner. His voice seems most fitting for Bilbo, and he does a more than credible job aging his voice for "Return of the King". Jim is not far behind, however. He's quite good too. Orson just outdoes him due to his two different Bilbo voices. As for the other two, they're not as good. Norman gives him a decent voice, but his performance is mildly bland. Michael, on the other hand, has the right amount of energy, but something in his accent just doesn't sound quite right to me, though I'm quite sure what I base that on.

I go with Orson Bean. He gives Bilbo the sense of humor, and that makes you feel like he's gradually taking charge of everything.
"Stop complaining - I never promised to burgle you first-class accommodations!"
But he also has that wistful feeling - he is innocent, but he's not naive.
If there were an American Hobbit, I think he would definitely sound like Orson.

@Starscreamsfan Where would you rank Bernard Cribbins' Bilbo Voice?

@EPA Deane I would rank him in-between Paul Daneman and Jim Piddock. He was pretty enjoyable in the role.

@Starscreamsfan I honestly prefer his Bilbo to Paul Daneman's Bilbo voice. Daneman, to me, sounded far too old for the Bilbo in that story (IMO he would have better fit the Elderly Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Yes, I have Listened to the 1968 Radio Drama.

@EPA Deane You know, I never noticed that, but now that you mention it, yes, Daneman did sound a little bit older, but still, I think it was a really nice and fun performance. So yeah, kinda hard to choose between Bernard and Paul, since both were fun in the role.

I like both Orson Bean and Michael Beattie, but for me, I'm giving the edge to Beattie. From what I've seen of The Hobbit animated, there are parts where Orson Bean sounds too casual. His voice for the part is excellent though.

Michael Beattie gives a slightly more enthusiastic performance and succeeds at making the character sound energetic and curious. Plus the voice is pretty much a perfect fit, if perhaps a tiny bit too young sounding.

In the end Orson Bean is great, but Michael Beattie's acting is a bit sharper, IMO.

Orson voiced both young & old Bilbo. Therefore he gets my vote and special credit as it's not everyday you see a VA doing both incarnations.

Michael is 2nd while Jim is 3rd.

Norman sounds confused at times and feels forced on certain lines.

I choose Orson Bean, he sounds right for the young Bilbo and aged his voice very well for the old. Michael Beattie and Jim Piddock are alright but Norman Bird is irritating.

However, my preference is for the movies actors, Ian Holm is perfect for the old Bilbo and Martin Freeman for the youg Bilbo.

If Martin Freeman voiced Bilbo in something rather than just acted his part, he'd be on here and there'd be no question in regards to the young version of Bilbo.

Actually, we'd better separate these depending on the age of the Bilbo these actors played. Anyone agree?

Orson Bean, Jim Piddock, and Michael Beattie all sound remarkably similar, so Norman Bird is kind of out of place. I'm going with Orson Bean 'cause he's the first one I ever heard.
