Lion King Lion King

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Scar with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Lion King

(Note: While some clips claimed that James Avery voiced Scar in the 1995 CD-Rom game "Disney's Animated Storybook The Lion King", after finding a couple of vids on it online this is confirmed to be false.)

Ah yes Scar, one of Disney's most renowned villains whom is often considered to be a classic example of a sinister manipulator (with an more than occasional troublesome ego).

In the classic 1994 film "The Lion King" he was voiced by known British actor Jeremy Irons. Jeremy is fairly well known for being a character actor and this is a fairly good reason why and lets just say I can understand why its one of Jeremy Irons' most renowned performances as it was a perfectly suitable for Scar's personality.

Though for a little bit of trivial info, Jeremy Irons temporarily damaged his vocal cords so at least for the latter portion of the highly renowned Villain song "Be Prepared", VA Jim Cummings took over and lets just say he was a definitely suitable replacement even if it is only brief. (Oh yes and Jim also voiced Scar in his cameo in the Lion King II, heck some people couldn't even tell that Jim Cummings did the last part of the song "Be Prepared".)

A little over a decade later in Kingdom Hearts II, while there were role reprisals in that game for Disney Characters Scar wasn't one of them in which he was voiced by James Horan. I will say this much that James did certainly try to sound like Jeremy Irons' Scar voice but it came off as an average at best impression. (And KH2 probably should have just used Jim Cummings I mean he was definitely already in the game.)

I am going with Jeremy Irons and Jim Cummings the most and James Horan at a semi-distant 2nd place.

Here's David Oyelowo as Scar in a clip from The Lion Guard:

I feel like it sounds like a halfway point between Keith David and Jim Cummings. It works, I definitely don't mind it.

In the Lion Guard they got David Oyelowo to voice Scar. and he does a good job. ofcourse with an actor with his calibre u can expect that.

Once he is added to this compare he will easily get 3rd place that i know for sure

Well, I think all I can add to this at this point is that James isn't...*as* bad as I remember him being? His impression of Jeremy is still very sub par and they could've probably benefited greatly from just having Jim do the lines, but could've been worse. I guess.

Also, it's a bit amusing how all of their names start with J.

Jeremy Irons MADE Scar the compelling and interesting villain that we all know and love. His voice and performance just screams that shady uncle you shouldn't trust but end up doing so anyways why because he just oozes charisma, he's able play him up as a comically serious character always "surrounded by idiots" and when it comes for him to finally to take over, he's downright diabolical and chilling.

Jim Cummings is as most of the time an amazing voice match. Holy Crap I can't believe that for the longest time that between voicing Ed the Hyena he also filled in for Jeremy towards the end of Be Prepared. Like wow I mean nowadays I can totally hear Cumming's voice print in it but the way he got the exact tone and delivery of Irons is incredible. This is another example of why Jim's one of the all-time best in the business.

James Horan is a good VA but he just lacks the passion and charisma that Scar needs, they really should have brought Jim back for Kingdom Hearts but I guess they thought he'd already done enough characters in that game.

I have to give this to Jeremy Irons but Jim Cummings is also a great substitute in the role.

Hmm, who else is hearing a lighter version of James Horan's Smaug voice when he's voicing Scar (especially when he says "no prey")?

Tom Kane did the voice of Scar in the "Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom" game at Walt Disney World.

I'm going with Jeremy Irons. With Jim Cummings as a close second.

Jeremy, definitely, but Jim did a fantastic impression. James was quite nice, but I would've preferred it if Jim voiced Scar in KH 2 instead. I think Ron Perlman would also make for a great voice for Scar.

What if Maurice LaMarche voiced Scar?
said at 5:01 PM on Tue Dec 9 2014
@Bauglir100 Sorry, he's a great actor, but I can't see it working all that well.
said at 4:26 PM on Wed Dec 10 2014
@Metabad I guess it would depend on what kind of voice he gives him. I think I could see Maurice using a rough, but not too gravelly or guttural, version of his voice for The Brain.
said at 8:48 PM on Wed Dec 10 2014
@Bauglir100 Ehhh...that's the one voice I think really wouldn't work at all for Scar.

I could see maybe something like his Dr. Doom working if he deepened it a bit, but I'm still not really crazy over the idea.
said at 2:33 PM on Wed Jan 7 2015
@Bauglir100 I'm trying to imagine that, he could come close but I don't think he would be the best fit.

Jeremy Irons IS Scar to me, but Jim did a pretty spot on impression. Seriously, I could never tell it was 2 people playing the role at once as a kid, and it took me until doing the research myself to find out.

James Horan isn't bad, but I'm honestly confused as to why they didn't have Jim voice him in the Kingdom Hearts games, I mean he already had a few roles in there (Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Pete), so it just confuses me as to why he didn't get that role as well.
said at 12:28 PM on Thu Jan 22 2015
@Zillah Horan's problem is that the voice is too deep and throaty, and the delivery is all wrong. He sounds so preening and laid back, and the scene where he's accusing Simba of being responsible for Mufasa's death wasn't anywhere CLOSE to being as epic as in the movie due to such wooden delivery.

Surprised that Tony Jay never voiced Scar, having a Similar Sort of Voice to Shere Khan the Tiger.

said at 6:56 PM on Sun Nov 16 2014
@CuriousUserX90 And if he did, then that probably would've been the only time where James Earl Jones and Tony Jay (my two most favorite actors/voice actors ever [Tony Jay at #01 and James Earl Jones at #02]) are in some of the same scenes together! But the closest they ever came to being in the same media was the show "The Greatest Adventure: Stories From the Bible" (in separate episodes, but still).

Jeremey all the way.

Jim was good here and could have easily reprised his role in kh2, even if it was just his robotik voice.

James Horan...I dunno, when he's not doing the lines from the film and using the game dialogue as scars ghost, it was alright, but it just sounds like he's rushing it and lacks the energy and roughness Jeremy had. He's improved a bit on magical kingdom, but as a different character and not scar, I'd like to hear more of that voice

Jeremy Irons. No doubt. He simply IS Scar. I honestly didn't realize Jim Cummings did the second half of his song until after the fact. I DID recognize him slightly in the sequel thoguh. Horan, sorry to say, isn't very good. He lacks both the menace and the bite that Jeremy had. Jim did a good job, but Jeremy gets my vote. It's easily one of his best roles ever.

@GothamRed When I posted that comment I forgot about that. Mainly because Scar's appearance was pretty brief in that movie. I haven't seen The Lion King 2 in ages. Thanks for reminding me of that performance as it has brought back some childhood memories.

@Ross123 Jim also voiced Scar in a PS1 game I have called Simba's Pride

I have to wonder why did they hire someone else for Scar in KH2 instead of using Jim
said at 4:41 AM on Sat Jul 26 2014
@HienFan I wondered the same thing. The only answer that I can think of is Square Enix wanted to try something new with some of the Disney characters.

I also question Tress MacNeille as Kanga in KH 2 as well. Like Jim, Kath was also voicing characters in the game.

@Ross123 Or Square's history of choosing the worst possible voice actors/giving really weird directions
Monotone Aerith and Ansem/Xehanort heartless in 2, Terra and Aqua in Birth by sleep, Mickey in the remakes of Chain of memory and Coded(not like those two got much storywise anyway), Cloud's voice period(yeah I don't like his dub voice haw haw...)
said at 11:18 AM on Mon Jul 28 2014
@HienFan Disagree with Mickey & Ansem/Xehanort as I enjoy Bret & Richard's performances. If you don't like them more power to you.

As for the rest you just mentioned, I couldn't agree more.

Although, critics praise Square for their casting choices in the 2 main games. Critics do agree with Terra being terrible BBS.
said at 9:07 PM on Mon Jul 28 2014
@Ross123 I meant their voices in those games(I voted for Richard as Ansem/Xehanort) they sound okay in the other games

@HienFan Steve Burton I felt was a bit wooden on most of his lines. Also, the voice he gave Cloud I find to be very forgettable unlike the other characters. Guess he doesn't leave that much of an impression on me, huh?
said at 9:44 AM on Thu Jul 31 2014
@Ross123 Yeah I find it very forgettable and generic(and too monotone) but I guess that's what people like(considering I find some no.1 to be really generic maybe I'm onto something)

Yes everyone, Jeremy Irons was really good in this movie and Jim Cummings is a boss for singing the second half of this song while doing a great job of emulating Jeremy... but why is this such a popular compare? I know it's some cool trivia and it's one of the coolest things about the movie... but why does this make it continuously a top ten compare? :P

Oh yeah, James Horan gives a passable impression, but it's lacking.

Jim Cummings did an amazing job covering the end of that song, I've known for a few years now about that and I still can't hear it change. It's kinda creepy to think the finale of the villain song to the most successful 2D animated film of all time is also the voice of the worlds most famous teddy bear.
But, let's be honest, Jeremy Irons wins, this doesn't even really count as a comparison when the others don't even have a dozen lines between them.
