Voice Compare » Laputa Castle in the Sky » Shalulu / Charles
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Shalulu / Charles with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINION
Today on the latest VC based off of the Hayao Miyazaki classic "Laputa Castle in the Sky" we shall actually be doing a VC on one of Dola's 3 sons. Namely the eldest and wisest (well compared to the other two) of the 3 brothers namely none other than Shalulu A.K.A Charles! In the obscure Streamline dub that was made for Japan Airlines he was voiced by the late Barry Stigler. In which Barry's voice does seem fairly goofy but not too goofy and his performance did fairly suit the role in which its a fairly above average performance. In the more recent dub from Disney (in which he is known as Charles) he was voiced by Michael "UK Whose Line is it Anyway?" McShane in which his known skills as a comedic actor do work pretty well here. Michael voice and performance give a somewhat smugger tone and trying to sound a bit more intellectual but it does reflect well on the role is still goofy comedic relief here. Overall both performances did pretty well but I am going with Michael McShane a bit more.Pokejedservo

*sigh* Well, either way, again, we'll just agree to disagree. Mandy should seriously do more voice acting; it was a treat to hear him as a pirate. He definitely gives his character a lot more personality than Mallow--no fault of the latter's, of course.

Telling someone you disagree with him isn't trolling. Trolling is intentionally trying to anger somebody.

I dunno, I thought Mandy did a great job. He may not have done voice work prior to this dub, but I could tell he was really enjoying himself. And even if there may have been a few places that seemed off, it wasn't that bad and other than that I had no major qualms with him. I thought he was great, just like the others. At least he didn't sound so monodimensionally goofy and cartoonish like his JAL counterpart.
(And gsbr, as much as you're entitled to your opinion, please don't troll me on this. This is how I feel, even if we disagree.)

Yeah, it's actually Lui/Louie and I dislike both of the VAs. Mallow is too goofy sounding and Patinkin fails to match his voice up with the character's facial expressions.

I still insist (and I'm right) that this character is not Shalulu/Charles. That character is in fact Lui/Louie, voiced by Mallow in the original and Patinkin in the Disney dub!
This site should really fix this mess-up.

Mike McShane, hands down, for Shalulu. Ditto for Mandy as Louie. At least they bring more character to their roles than Dave or Barry (no offense to either).

I agree with those comments: that character is Louie (actually Louis) voiced by Dave Mallow in the original while the Disney dub, voiced Mandy Patinkin!

Online Ghibli is wrong. When one of the pirates finds Sheeta's dress, he calls the moustached brother Louie.

No this is Shalulu/Charles, I have seen the movie in question and even Online Ghibli confirms that this character is indeed Charles. Lui/Louie is the one with the blond beard and mustache.

A word of note: this isn't Charles or Shalulu; this is Louie, as voiced by Mandy Patinkin.
Anyway, I definitely prefer Michael McShane; he's just much more into the role and more entertaining than Stigler, who's just all "goofy-sounding" with no real character—the older dub was never very good to begin with, and as such, Stigler wasn't at his best. McShane is simply amazing. Plus, you can't go wrong with his "All good pirates listen to their mom!"
For Louie, I have to say Mandy Patinkin; I love how he handles Sheeta in the scene where he approaches Sheeta; the older guy has done far better in other dubs, and it shows, as his performance is just plain awful compared to Mandy.
