Chef Kawasaki

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Chef Kawasaki with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Kirby

Though he was actually a mid-boss when he first appeared in Kirby Super Star, the anime depicts Kawasaki as a friendly, if bumbling, chef who owns the only restaurant in town, and always serves up the citizens with a smile. His voice seems to be based on Ed Wynn, and he grants Kirby the rare Cook copy ability.

Maddie's Ed Wynn impression does a fantastic job at making Chef Kawasaki sound amicable, kind, somewhat clumsy, and sincere. It's a great showcase of her range. Ted Lewis's voice isn't a straight impression, but his delivery is very similar, so he nails that aspect. But at the end of the day, the high-pitched, somewhat clownlike texture of Maddie's voice is the personal touch that really gives her the edge to me.

On a side note, Chef Kawasaki is my personal favourite Kirby character.

Both are good, although I think I prefer Maddie Blaustein a bit more.

By the way NCZ, why is Kawasaki your favorite Kirby character?

I just think he's funny.

Him and Mr. Frosty.

1. Maddie Blaustein
Excellent portrayal! She sounded so goofy and charming, which was one of the reasons why I remembered the episodes with Chef Kawasaki so fondly when I watched them as a child. One of my favourite roles from her besides Meowth from Pokemon.

2. Ted Lewis
Unfortunately Maddie is no longer with us, so Ted took over the role. I can see he retained some aspects from her performance and overall did a pretty good impression.

(Side note: it's very amusing to know that Chef Kawasaki's voice is based off Ed Wynn, mainly because another famous 4Kids actor who worked with both Ted and Maddie also took cues from Wynn...)

I had no idea Kawaski was voiced by a women. She definitely did an amazing job.

@Soul-dragon That's because, although Maddie was born intersex & was later able to transition somewhat to female, she was raised as male & had a pretty deep voice originally. She lost quite a bit of it as she took the estrogen to really "think & feel female" so to speak, but her voice had definitely a lot more natural range & size than most cis-born women.

While at the same time her voice was not so low that they'd rather get a woman to do many of her parts (although she did tend to lean towards male voices). I think that's a very cool rarity in voice-over & I think more trans VAs would be awesome.

Maddie's just so funny and likeable in this role, I love the high voice as well as the slight lisp she adds. It sounded like she really had a lot of fun voicing the character and it would've been great to hear her reprise it someday. Really wish she was still with us, it's one of the most unique voices to come out of Right Back At Ya.

Ted Lewis is actually pretty good all things considered. He took a similar approach ot the character which I appreciate, he's noticably deeper and a little raspier, and I think maybe even a little goofier sounding, but I can still tell it's the same character.

Both are good, but I definitely have to go with Maddie. She originated the role and gave him so much personality. Ted's a pretty dang good replacement. That said, I do kind of wonder how Michael Sinterniklaas or Wayne Grayson would sound in the role. Heck maybe even Sam Riegal if he were still working in New York.

The late Maddie's performance is pretty amusing, so I think I'm going with her, although it's something different to come from her...which can be a good or bad thing, depending on opinion.

Ted's take is a pretty good impression, but it's a bit raspier.

Chef Kawasaki is one of my favourite Maddie Blaustein roles. And you can tell she loved playing him as well. It's such a lovable voice haha.

Ted Lewis also is pretty good, his voice isn't quite as fitting. But hey you can't fault him for trying his own thing with it. Either way he nails the acting itself and he wasn't a bad choice for a replacement at all really.

So yes, I'm most certainly voting for Maddie here!

Never knew this character spoke tbh , but from what i hear Maddie is my favorite because her version sounds just funny and has personality on it. Ted's sounds like character is just dumb and has no idea what is going on and its not as fun as Maddie. Both work but Maddie is better in my opinion.

That actually sounds pretty different from her(Maddie) many carbon copy voices in Pokemon(Seymour, AJ, Damien, Bill, Melvin the weirdo magician with too much of a fixation on Execute...)

Ted meanwhile sounds a lot like his Chumley just less of that strong rasp

They are both alright but you know what... I'm gonna go with Ted

You know, I never watched Right Back at Ya, and I'd always seen her listed as KAwasaki, so I always assumed that the voice was something like a less raspy Bruno from Pokemon or something, but hearing this voice was a really nice surprise. The Ed Wynn impression is great and she sounds like she was having a ton of fun playing this character. It's one of those voices that brings a smile to my face when I hear it.

Ted is also very good at both sounding very close to Maddie but also able to do his own thing, and like Maddie, he sounds like he's having a lot of fun in the role. Though I have to give this to Maddie since I think her delivery is a teeny bit better and for her having more to work with

In all seriousness:

Oh man, I haven't seen that Kirby episode in a while (actually I've annotated it a year ago I believe). Maddie really nails Kawasaki's hilariously pathetic clown personality, he was probably my favorite next to Dedede and Escargoon. I really wish Maddie was still here. In this day and age of social media, she would've fit in perfectly.

Ted Lewis was great as Dedede, but I really don't get why he didn't go with the Mad Hatter voice. The acting's fine, but the voice just sounds kinda grating to me, like an annoying Escargoon.. maybe Wayne Grayson could've subbed in, like Solomon Muto.

@Ghosty404 Looking back.. this is probably one of those rare occasions where I think James Carter Cathcart could suitably fill in for Maddie.

See, he does a near-spot-on Kawasaki impression in an episode where Kawa's old friend comes into town for a visit. He voices the friend, and I swear to god I thought it was Maddie talking to herself at first.

Kirby, Tiff, and Tuff all allowed it to happen because they thought he was an imposter. They're abetters.
