OTHER KENICHI: THE MIGHTIEST DISCIPLE COMPARES
Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

Voice Compare » Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple » Hermit

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Hermit with sound clips and images.
Hermit also known as Natsu Tanimoto was one of the Eight Fists of Ragnarok; eight of the strongest members of that organization. Most of the Fists have adopted the names of legendary beings and figures from Norse mythology.

Natsu Tanimoto is a skilled, confident and powerful martial artist. In the English dub version of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple Hermit was originally voiced by Jason Liebrecht for season 1. For season 2 Hermit was voiced by Eric Vale.

Jason Liebrecht was unfortunately not able to record his lines for season 2 because of a motorcycle accident which put him out of commission for an entire year. Eric Vale was then brought in as his replacement.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Jason Liebrecht was pretty good in this role and it's a shame he never got the chance to continue. At the time I didn't even know Jason had been replaced so great work by Eric Vale who managed a fairly good imitation and then improved on it (IMO).

I suppose I slightly prefer Eric Vale's voice but Eric did have the advantage of working on more episodes and leaving a more significant impression, compared to Jason who only worked on a few episodes before his accident.

Jason Liebrecht's voice, in my opinion, is more distinct and interesting. His lower, softer voice fits the psychology of the character better; his somber moments, his "playing innocent" scenes, and his angry outbursts and speeches sound more convincingly emotional and slightly deranged. The one big problem I have with his performance is a couple of his speeches and exclamations during fight-scenes lacked the proper amount of power.

Eric Vale's voice is too clean, peppy, and youthful for this character, in my opinion. His inflection is often limited to just sounding irritated when he's supposed to sound REALLY angry or a bit depressed. I think that kinda sucks, though, because I know that he's capable of a more interesting, less cookie cutter voice since he played Kimblee, but I think his job as Hermit just sounds generic for the most part. I did like how he put a tad more force into his shouts, but they do sound spoken instead of felt a lot of the time.

Reading the description on this page is also the first time I've heard of Jason being in a motorcycle accident. I'm really glad that it wasn't fatal and that he's still here with us.

@PsychicVoiceSpy After finishing the entirety of the series, Eric Vale is a bit better than I gave him credit for. He settled into the role towards the end, but I still think Jason was a slightly better fit.

Its a rather mixed bag to me. On one hand, I think Jason's accent was a good fit for Tanimoto's "fake nice" persona, given he's an "actor" and all that, but not so much for his true colors. Eric on the other hand was a much better fit for Tanimoto's true persona; he had the right amount of anger, strength, and hatred needed for the character's true face. I think it would have added more flavor to the character if they'd brought in Eric from the start as "Hermit" while "Tanimoto" was only used for Jason, even if he did have an accident.

I don't know what it is but something seems to be missing with Jason's Hermit. He sort of sounds like he lost a few screws after he got into fighting.

Eric added a lot of depth to Hermit. He gave the character a feel of anger, frustration, resentment, and strength. Eric's Hermit doesn't sound like a fake or immitation, in fact it seems more realistic than Jason's Hermit.

Eric's Hermit wins hands down. This is one of the few times where I'll say that the replacement completely beat out the original.

Both were decent in their own ways, but I think I like Jason just a bit better.
