Jungle Book Jungle Book

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Baloo with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Jungle Book

Baloo is a sleepy brown bear who plays a part in salvaging Mowgli from Shere Khan's clutches and educating him on the Law of the Jungle. In certain adaptations, he is a laid-back sloth bear who lives by the "bare necessities" philosophy and survives by living off the land. He grows attached to Mowgli and does all in his power to keep him in the jungle and away from the man-village.

I'm not good at judging things... Can anyone give me their thoughts on Joel McCrary as Baloo?

 3 Shout Outs!
I gotta say, Robert Ridgely did a pretty good job as Baloo without impersonating Phil Harris.

Robert was more similar to Phil than Ed and John were surprisingly

Boy, Robert Ridgely really fits the role surprisingly well. Who would have thought that the loud and blustery General Ross could manage to sound so laidback and cool??? That's range.

Phil Harris for me, he wasn't just Baloo, he was pretty much born to play Baloo. Ed Gilbert's a very good impersonator so he did well with what he was given.

Bill Murray's third and AJ Henderson for me is fourth though his voice reminds me of those two Arthur characters he played.

John Goodman is last, he was just not right for the role. He started okay but later on just turned into another typical John Goodman role.

Well i'll be damned Robert Ridgerly did really good as Baloo. Sounds familiar to Baloo than Goodman ever tried.

Phil Harris & Ed Gilbert did the best performances as Baloo for me, but the edge goes to Harris to me for originating that lovable, goofy, yet distinct voice for him.

Joel mcCary sounds a little like Patrick warburton.

I think out of all of the casting choices in the new movie, Bill Murray as Baloo is my favorite.

Whoa, that's a lot of additions. XD

I'll admit some of these additions come off as odd to me since I'm so use to the characterization from the original Disney version. So I'm gonna be biased and day Phil Harris, I just enjoy that deep relaxed tone of his. As far as replacements go, Ed Gilbert is pretty good.

@Kioea Roddy McDowell sounds to me like he's doing a Winston Churchill impression. At least in the second half of that clip.

Thurl Ravenscroft also voiced Baloo for his appearance in the stage show "Disney on Parade":

I don't think John Goodman's Baloo is THAT bad...

But I'll go with Phil. Ed's good too.
said at 10:42 PM on Sun Feb 15 2015
Phil easily wins. He IS Baloo all over. I'd almost say Ed and John joint second place because they both come fairly close to matching the way Phil did it in different ways. But I think Ed scores a smidge higher with me because John sort of turned Baloo into John Goodman. Pamela comes in last place for obvious reasons.

You know who should voice Baloo? Ron Perlman. He even sounds a lot like Phil Harris.

Who voiced the Adult Baloo in the DVD Cutscenes. Jim Cummings? He did all other Adults apart from Shere Khan.

I never commented on this?
Phil Harris was the original Baloo, gave him his wonderful laid-back and easy tone. He holds a spot in my heart for Baloo forever.
Ed Gilbert does a fantastic sound-alike job of Phil Harris as well! It's incredibly well matched.
Unfortunately, as much as I love John Goodman, he just doesn't sound much like Phil.
said at 7:52 AM on Sun Oct 5 2014
@Shiny Raticate Does anyone know why the man behind Monsters Inc.'s Top Scarer has hired to do Baloo, instead of the one who did his Adult self in Jungle Cubs/TaleSpin? His performance is not at all like Phil Harris (might he even do Little John and O'Malley).

@CuriousUserX90 It could have been problems contacting the former actor, or if he denied wanting to ork in the movie.

@CuriousUserX90 Ed Gilbert died before Junlge Book 2 was made so that's why he wasn't in it. If that's what you're asking.
said at 12:38 AM on Tue Nov 11 2014
@Polyester Funk The One who voiced his Adult self in the Jungle Cubs DVD didn't voice Baloo in the Jungle Book 2 either. Same with Bagheera, probably to keep the Cast Consistent (Not sure if they'd let Cummings handle that much in a film like that, 3 was probably enough for him).

@CuriousUserX90 The one who voiced Baloo in the dvd cutscenes is Ed... he died before Jungle Book 2 that's why they choose John

Pamella is the young version so she doesn't count for me.

Phil is the best as he was very funny & created a character that I sometimes find hard 2 get out my head which is good when I get bored.

Ed did an average impression as did John.
said at 9:26 PM on Tue Feb 10 2015
@Ross123 I'll skip Pam because of what you said since I was never big on 'kids' edition. The sad thing is even though I like the voice cast in the sequel(especially Mowgli, Bagheera and Sher Khan) but for this case I have to agree, both of the impression are just okay, doesn't exceed
said at 8:17 AM on Wed Feb 11 2015
@HienFan While I did find John's impression average. It's pretty much him being himself at times throughout the movie.

Which makes me question if he was even doing an impression at all.
said at 11:42 PM on Thu Feb 12 2015
@Ross123 Which makes me question if he even tried his best for this character, Bob Joles tried, Tony Jay tried, Hayley Joel tried, Mae Whitman tried even though they were working on a sequel meant for a quick buck but I don't think John Goodman was trying at all, it doesn't have the heartfelt performance Phil has and it certainly is nowhere near his Sullivan
said at 12:39 PM on Sun Feb 15 2015
@HienFan Well you're right, every1 did try their best to sound like the characters.

I really can't tell if John tried to do a good Baloo or not. Even though his voice doesn't fit, he does have some energy coming from him during the performance.
said at 2:53 AM on Tue Feb 17 2015
@Ross123 Which is for the best, better effort than no effort(ANYTHING by Dingo Pictures is as bored as cardboard with no emotion) no matter what

Well John was a lot goofier than Phil is that's for sure still better than when his own origination voice James Sullivan got replaced with a more brutish voice in the Monster Inc game
said at 3:38 PM on Thu Mar 21 2013
Too bad there aren't any clips of Baloo from Chuck Jones' Mowgli's Brothers and Brian-Doyle Murray's voice in that one flop.
said at 1:37 PM on Tue Apr 2 2013
@DeepC Also Joel McCrary in Kinect Disney Land Adventures. I think he did a suitable job, doesn't sound exactly like Phil, but a lot better than John.
said at 8:18 PM on Fri Jun 14 2013
@VctrBnsn I think John did a great job and is underrated. I see the problem with it but he did a great job and clearly enjoyed the role. He was also great at "Bare Necessities". At least IMO.
said at 8:35 PM on Fri Jun 14 2013
@pete You know, I loved Phil Harris and Ed Gilbert in the role as a kid, yet I never saw the difference between them and John when I first saw the movie. I guess he just doesn't hold up against the other clips here, but that doesn't mean he's bad either.
said at 12:31 PM on Tue Mar 8 2016
@VctrBnsn I just took a listen to Joel's Baloo. I think he's decent, it sort of sounds like a cross between Phil's Baloo and John's Baloo.
said at 8:01 PM on Wed May 30 2012
Ed sounded so much like Phil it's scary! Anyway, my list is:
1. Phil- Without him we wouldn't have the voice and there'd be no voice for the other VAs to imitate. Plus he gave Baloo the emotion and soul he's known for.
2. Ed- Like i said, he sounds pretty much just like Phil!
3. Pamella- Somewhat sounds like Baloo would as a cub
4. John- I agree, was miscast. Just because you have a deep, somewhat gruff, manly but not overbearing voice does not mean you automaticaly sound like Baloo!

Phil Harris and Ed Gilbert were both good in the role. John Goodman was miscast, IMHO. He was better in "The Emperor's New Groove", "Mosters Inc." and "The Princess and the Frog" than he was here.
