Voice Compare » Jungle Book » Baloo

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Baloo with sound clips and images.
Ballo is a laid-back sloth bear who lives by the "bare necessities" philosophy and survives by living off the land. He grows attached to Mowgli and does all in his power to keep him in the jungle and away from the man-village.

I never commented on this?
Phil Harris was the original Baloo, gave him his wonderful laid-back and easy tone. He holds a spot in my heart for Baloo forever.
Ed Gilbert does a fantastic sound-alike job of Phil Harris as well! It's incredibly well matched.
Unfortunately, as much as I love John Goodman, he just doesn't sound much like Phil.

I wonder if John DiMaggio would make a good Baloo?

@Finister2 Possibly but not as good as Bill Farmer.

@Finister2 I always thought Daran Norris would do well as the Disney version of Baloo.

Pamella is the young version so she doesn't count for me.

Phil is the best as he was very funny & created a character that I sometimes find hard 2 get out my head which is good when I get bored.

Ed did an average impression as did John.

Too bad there aren't any clips of Baloo from Chuck Jones' Mowgli's Brothers and Brian-Doyle Murray's voice in that one flop.

@DeepC Also Joel McCrary in Kinect Disney Land Adventures. I think he did a suitable job, doesn't sound exactly like Phil, but a lot better than John.

@VctrBnsn I think John did a great job and is underrated. I see the problem with it but he did a great job and clearly enjoyed the role. He was also great at "Bare Necessities". At least IMO.

@pete You know, I loved Phil Harris and Ed Gilbert in the role as a kid, yet I never saw the difference between them and John when I first saw the movie. I guess he just doesn't hold up against the other clips here, but that doesn't mean he's bad either.

So who did Baloo's voice in the original version of Bare Necessities?

@TheTrueYuma That'd be Phil Harris still.

@CatsTuxedo Doesn't sound like Phil Harris to me.

@TheTrueYuma It's Phil Harris. Phil wasn't just an actor, he was a singer.

Ed sounded so much like Phil it's scary! Anyway, my list is:
1. Phil- Without him we wouldn't have the voice and there'd be no voice for the other VAs to imitate. Plus he gave Baloo the emotion and soul he's known for.
2. Ed- Like i said, he sounds pretty much just like Phil!
3. Pamella- Somewhat sounds like Baloo would as a cub
4. John- I agree, was miscast. Just because you have a deep, somewhat gruff, manly but not overbearing voice does not mean you automaticaly sound like Baloo!

Balloo was in TaleSpin? I forgot about that, that's so random.

@Music Meister Not really. Talespin also had Shere Khan and Louie as well. It was basically a spin-off of Jungle Book.

@TylerMirage A spinoff where Baloo becomes a pilot, lol

@Music Meister Oh, you were getting at the fact that he become a pilot. I thought you meant Baloo's inclusion in general.

Phil Harris and Ed Gilbert were both good in the role. John Goodman was miscast, IMHO. He was better in "The Emperor's New Groove", "Mosters Inc." and "The Princess and the Frog" than he was here.

1.Phil Harris - He was the original
2.Ed Gilbert - He was good til his death
3.John Goodman - He sounds too much like Pacha and Sulley
4.Pamella Adlon - She sounds too similar to Bobby Hill and Spinelli

It appears you have one more to add, Steven Curtis Chapman voiced him in the video game The Jungle Book: Rhythm N'Groove. And my votes for Harris but Goodman and Gilbert are very good as well!

I'm still liking Harris best, then Goodman.
And I give points to Segall for effort.

I still think there could be a voice actor that could do a better job than all 4 but my vote for this one goes to Gilbert.
