@batcool I'd love if Keith could maybe dig up a clip of his audition at some point & share what it sounded like with us.

 1 Shout Out!
Coming back, I still prefer a deep voice for Rodney/War Machine. As such, James Mathis III and James Avery are my favourites.

Don Cheadle is also great too. A great VA performance from a movie actor.

I've come to like Bumper more than I previously did, also I still prefer a deeper voice for WM/JR.

Much like with the Rhodey compare I like James C. Mathis III the most. I think the deeper voice of his works a lot better than as War Machine than as Rhodey.

James Avery definitely fits War Machine so much more than he ever did as Rhodey. Dorian Harewood sounds way too unconfident sounding plus he doesn't sound like he's wearing the suit either which is a shame since I liked him a lot as Rhodey.

Bumper Robinson and Don Cheadle better as War Machine than as Rhodey, I think its the effects on the voice, it helped enhance their performances.

Nolan North....Holy Crap man. He friggin rocks here, he sounds deep, powerful and badass sounding. I can't believe how well he pulls him off. This is definitely an example of an out of the box casting working perfectly.

LeVar Burton and Daniel Bacon sounded a lot better as Rhodey than War Machine I'm afraid.

Phil LaMarr really needs some effects on his voice. I like his performance though even if he's trying to voice match Don Cheadle.

Wayne Ward is the worst one here, he only works for a fighting game but if he were to voice the actual character, it wouldn't work.

I'm giving my vote to James C. Mathis III.

BONUS: Adrian Holmes and Khary Payton would make awesome War Machines. I'd love to see Rodney Saulsberry some day get the chance to voice War Machine.

Time between Don Cheadle and James C Mathis for me.
said at 3:38 AM on Sat Feb 1 2014
Older- James Avery and James C Mathis are the best voices for the older War Machine IMO. Avery sounds a bit cheesy, but the performance is no doubt memorable. Mathis has that professional and experienced tone down well, which works for War Machine. Props to North for sounding unrecognisable.

Younger- It's not even a comparison for me. Don Cheadle is the best for the younger version. Sounds like a younger version of Mathis. Phil doesn't do too badly impersonating Cheadle. Could be better, but it works. Daniel Bacon works really well for the Armored Adventures version. Bumper Robinson is the weakest of the lot. I don't feel that War Machine is a profession like I can with Don Cheadle. One of EMH's worst voice/casting choices IMO.
said at 8:26 AM on Sat Feb 1 2014
@Fulgore2005 But Don Cheadle's not playing a younger version of the character, he just has a naturally higher voice. The only one who's intentionally younger is Daniel Bacon's version.
said at 1:32 AM on Sun Feb 2 2014
@GothamRed Right. I forgot that was Cheadle's natural voice. Oh well, one learns something.

Personally, I think Phil does a near-perfect impression of Cheadle.

Also, I don't know why, but I prefer Avery as War Machine but Harewood as Rhodey.

It's like they took all the good things we could expect from Phil as War Machine and did the opposite. I get he was a stand in for Don but he just sounds like he has a cold at times.
said at 8:34 AM on Sun Jan 19 2014
@Music Meister Well, he's trying to sound like Don Cheadle and not do his own thing. He sounds better I think in LEGO Marvel.

James C Mathis sounds closest to the voice I hear in my head when I read the comics, so I'm going with him.

Wayne Ward is just generic, Daniel Bacon, Levar Burton, and Bumper Robinson all sound too young, and Don Cheadle sounds just plain boring.

Dorian Harewood, James Avery, and Nolan North are all strong contenders for first place. James Avery just sounds a little cheesy but he's got the voice down, and Dorian sounds a bit too deadpan. I'm pleasantly surprised by Nolan's range, and I think he would be my favorite if he had more material to work with.
said at 4:32 PM on Fri Sep 26 2014
@chaosincarnate At least you have your own idea of what his voice should sound like. I think most people don't even care about that and pick the voice actor from their favorite series. Im seein' way too much judgement of Phil Lamaars voicing of the character is based on how much he sounds like Don Cheadle. Which is just asinine if you ask me.
said at 3:38 PM on Sat Sep 27 2014
@atlien Yeah, most one sided polls/VC's stem from what show/product the VA is working in, rather than how they stand as actual performances on their own. Hence the bias that goes on so easily.
said at 3:45 AM on Sun Aug 25 2013
An interesting comparison. A lot of these guys are great in the role. But I like James Avery's version the most.

Dorian Harewood, James Avery, Nolan North, and James C Mathis III are my favorites. Each gave a deep and powerful vocie that you would expect from a guy with machine guns on his body.

The others are a bit too light

I'm going to go with Bumper Robinson. Though Nolan North, James Avery and Don Cheadle were great too.

That being said since Bumper will be voicing Falcon in Avengers Assemble. I think Phil LaMarr should be the next voice of War Machine.
said at 8:08 PM on Wed Jan 23 2013
@Autovolt 1. What makes you think Bumper won't reprise it since he's a main cast member? 2. Phil already voiced him for some additional dialogue in the Iron Man 2 game. See the 4th comment from the bottom.
said at 3:33 PM on Sun Mar 10 2013
@pete Lots of shows do something similar. Phil LaMarr is a reacurring cast member in Young Justice, yet they got KMR to do Jon Stewart simply because they wanted someone different. And even though Phil has done him once, it would be cool to hear him do it in something more high profile.
said at 3:36 PM on Sun Mar 10 2013
@pete Even though Phil has done War Machine , I mean. just wanted to be clear.

@TheVengeanceKnight Here's the thing. James Rhodes is a veteran and he's supposed to sound like he's been in combat and Jame Avery did that best with Dorian Harewood, Nolan North, and Don Cheadle close behind. I personally think Bumper sounds too young for the role but he could improve if he had more to work with as could Daniel Bacon and Levar Burton.
said at 6:15 PM on Sun Nov 25 2012
@pete You mean if the execs at Marvel weren't assholes and didn't cancel AEMH. :-P
said at 10:28 PM on Sun Nov 25 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight Yeah pretty much though I think he was good in the "New Avengers" episode. In his debut he barely had any lines in the suit and had more lines out of it prior to that.
said at 12:38 PM on Sat Dec 29 2012

No offense, but it depends on the war EMH Rhodey served. If we're talking about the Vietnam War or something like that or even the Gulf War, then yeah, he'd sound too young. If, like the live-action Rhodey, we're talking about the War on Terror, then he's fine.
said at 3:42 PM on Sun Mar 10 2013
@Anicomicgeek And it basically is the war on terror, maybe not Al Quida, but HYDRA, AIM, and Latveria count right?

In this case, probably.

James Avery. I remember that episode. His deeper voice & attitude work best.

I know this might sound weird, but I'm actually gonna have to vote for Wayne Ward. The only reason being that I've played the crossover fighting games and I still can't get enough of War Machine's quotes in both MvC1 and MvC2.
