Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Iron Man with sound clips and images.
I know this Voice Compare has been LONG overdue and it's about time we have an A-list super hero from the Marvel Universe that isn't part of Spiderman or X-Men. Ladies and gentlemen I give you IRON MAN!

Been living under a rock and never heard of Iron Man? That's ok here's some basic character info. Iron Man is a super hero in the Marvel Universe. His alter ego is Tony Stark; a billionaire playboy, genius engineer and owner of Stark Industries. Tony Stark created the suit after an accident which left him with a severe injury during a kidnapping.

His captors wanted him to build them a destructive and powerful weapon but Tony instead created a powered suit of armor to save his life and escape captivity. Tony then uses the suit to protect the world as Iron Man.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Many of these voice actors were great so it's hard for me to "declare" a clear winner. Some of my favorites however are David Kaye, Eric Loomis, Marc Worden and Stephen Stanton.

Don't get me wrong, Matthew has a great performance, but I'm so use to RDJ/Loomis that it seems weird to hear Tony sound more serious.

I finally saw Rise of Technovore, and wow, Matthew Mercer is amazing in the role! He pulls off the suave sound pretty well but also nails the emotion and personality perfectly. He reminds me a bit of Marc Worden, except with a voice that isn't quite as deep. My vote still remains with Marc, but Matthew impressed the heck out of me and is my new second place. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of his performance!

Looking back, I'm starting to like Matthew Mercer more. He has the voice of a cool playboy and millionaire, but can also be a no-nonsense hero.

Of course, I still think U/MVC3 Eric Loomis is a top quality performance too.

I've really gotten use to Adrian as Ironman, he really improved in recent episodes of Avengers Assembled. Not my top favorite but in the top five at least.
I use to really like Loomis but...relistening he can get a bit nasally and while his voice can sound a lot like RDJ he doesn't quite have the same charm as him

After hearing Mercer in Avengers Confidential, I'm going to give it to him. He's got the right balance of cool, hot-shot and intelligence for Tony. Plus, he sounds a bit like RDJ while still making the role his own, so that'll keep movie fans happy.

My favorite is Eric Loomis; he really sounded alot like Robert Downey Jr. but added his own touch to the character as well. I also like Mark W, John Cygen, and Crispen Freeman.
I didn't like Adrian Pasdar at first, he sounded too "sleazy", but, like Drake Bell's Spider-Man, he really improved later on and his voice has grown on me. Also like Drake Bell, however, they've been using him way too much and now I'm kind of tired of him.

I think my top 10 for this would have to be:
1-: John Cygan: His voice sounds closest to what I hear for Iron Man in the comics, and the effects makes him a better Iron Man than Tony Stark for me.
2-: Crispin Freeman: Quite fitting for the character, and a worthy successor to John.
3-: Eric Loomis: A very good impersonation of RDJ, he puts a lot of passion into it.
4-: Marc Worden: The effects and deep voice are a nice way of disguising Tony Stark from Iron Man.
5-: David Kaye: Again, the deep voice and thick effects make sense and I enjoy him, but I think it should have been a little higher.
6-: Chris Cox: Shows off his range well, but something about his delivery feels a bit... off.
7-: Nolan North: I love Nolan, and he does a fine job, but that's the same voice he uses for a lot of characters. Nolan's got range, I would like to see him do something a little different with the role if he ever reprises it.
8-:Tom Kane: Great for the older version.
9-: Jason Griffith: He's got the passion in the delivery department, but he sounds too young for the mainstream version he's voicing.
10-: Tom Kenny: Entertaining for the comedic depiction of Iron Man.

Everyone else does a decent job, but Mathew Mercer sounds too downbeat, and Adrian's voice is just way too rough.

Robert Hay-sounds to high

David Kaye-could have potencial, but to effects are a bit to much, making him sound almost evil.

John Cygan-the voice doesn’t fit and has a awkward way of speaking,he sounds like he’s reading most of his lines

Stephen Stanton-not bad,but again the effects are to heavy

Francis Dialowsky-yeah hes performance is crap, like most of the voice work on that show

Crispin Freeman-he sounds rather fitting, definantly one of the better casting choices in that game

Marc Worden-again with those damn voice effects, but jugging by his voice in Marvel Heores he actually makes a pretty good Iron man, managing to sound suave, slik, kind of arrogant but also heroic.

Eric Loomis-his voice is unique, its very different from the others, sounding higher and more nasally, yet its oddly fitting,it still holds a lot of qualities that I I would associate with iron man.

Jason Giffith-hes voice sounds very off to me,its to young and lack any qualities that would be associated with iron man

Adrian Pasdar-a lot of people hate him, honest ly I don’t get it,sure hes not perfect, but I find him to be a better fit than several of the other Vas on this compare, atoulgh I do agree that hes way overused and constantly shoved down our throats

Chris Cox-hes better than I expected, not the best but still a decent performance

Overall my favorite is Marc Worden, second Eric Loomis, third Crispin Freeman/Chris Cox,and I think Adrian Padar deserves fourth place

I just don't see the appeal in Eric Loomis as Iron Man. Its simply a Robert Downey Jr impression. There is no presence in his performance. Its quite baffling to me that he is in the lead for the votes. To be honest none of these voice actors really impressed me but Adrian Pasdar, Adrian Petriw, Robert Hays, David Kaye, Matthew Mercer,Jason Griffith & John Vernon were all fairly competent and stood out as the most effective out of the pack.

I've imagined Iron Man to have a deep, suave voice that can sound both powerful and heroic, with some intelligence and attitude too, of course. This VC is too big for me to have the patience to tackle very one of them, so here's my thoughts on just a few.

David Kaye - Very close to my ideal sound. He does a deep, intelligent voice with inflection that I really like. He's my current favorite.

Marc Worden - I really like this one too. The voice is quite suave, powerful, and it does make him sound pretty cool, but his inflection bores me just a bit.

Matthew Mercer - My third place. I like him quite a bit too and he gives a great performance from what I can tell in this clip, but I think he sounds a bit young.

Eric Loomis... he gives a decent performance, but he's never fit into my idea of Iron Man. His higher, nasally voice and accent get on my nerves, to be honest.

@PsychicVoiceSpy I really like how he makes Stark sound like a snooty rich guy. While I do like Eric Loomis as well, I think he gets that across much better than Loomis ever did.

He's not my favourite since there are a few things that still get in the way of his performance IMO, but I don't entirely see why he gets so much hate.

Still not a fan of Padsar's, to be honest, even after better scripts and direction (Lego Marvel Super Heroes, for example). I dunno, it just... doesn't sound right for Tony.

He is improving but I still don't feel like he is the best, and wouldn't mind if they'd let him step down for a bit so that we could hear a new Iron Man. This Avengers anime might allow that... I hope.

Vote remains with Eric Loomis, with Chris Cox and Crispin Freeman close behind still.

ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE: BTVA will not tolerate blind hating on voice compares. On *any* voice compares. BTVA is a place where fans can DISCUSS - in a polite and logical manner - characters, titles and voice actors.

If you have strong, negative feelings towards a certain VA or performance, then voice your opinion in a respectable manner, backed up with an explanation as to why. Fire-hose-spraying the comments sections with "so-and-so SUCKS BALLS as so-and-so!!!1!" is a quick way to get to get on the ban-wagon.

I really like both Eric Loomis and Marc Worden.

What bugs me about Adrian Pasdar isn't so much his performance, but Marvel continuing to shove him into all their shows. What's even weirder is that Marvel nowadays is clearly trying to ride off of the success of the Avengers movie, so wouldn't it make sense if they'd kept Loomis (who pretty much is the closest to having RDJ in the shows and games) since they're changing a lot of other things to more resemble Whedon's super-hit team up?
atlien
said at 12:07 PM on Sun Oct 6 2013
@HyperVoiceActing Agreed. It really pisses me off that they think they have to do that. I hate how they canned EMH only to start up another avengers series closer to the movie versions of the charachters. The movie's take on them wasnt even ideal imo. Hawkeye (my favorite character) looked way cooler in EMH than he does in Assemble.
HyperVoiceActing
said at 1:03 PM on Sun Oct 6 2013
@atlien - I think for the movie universe, the character portrayals were perfectly fine (though Clint DID get the shortest end of the arrow) but they don't have to apply it to EVERY adaptation.

It's like how Batman fans complain when the newest Batman show is nothing like Batman TAS: if every show was like that it'd have no identity (Which is one of the many reasons why I love Beware, but that's a topic for another day).

But back to Iron Man: if that was their ideology, to make it more like the Whedon film, they could have just brought back Loomis as oppose to Pasdar (who sounds nothing like RDJ). That being said, I also think Loomis did much more with the character than Pasdar. Yes Loomis was at first just a RDJ knock-off, and one could argue he still is, but he seemed to put enough into it to make the role his own IMO.

I honestly have to vote for Eric Loomis... but I am mostly judging this for his performance in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He had a sort of RDJ-like feel to him, but he also expressed so much emotion with the character. Anger, pain, a sense of failure, pride, triumph; he made Iron Man truly feel like a worthy leader of the Avengers throughout the series.

I also REALLY like Marc Worden, Crispin Freeman and Chris Cox in the role.

Adrian Padsar... Marvel, why must you keep recasting him? His performances are just so... inconsistent and unfitting for Tony Stark. He doesn't have the traits that I affiliate with Tony Stark, he just feels really... flat to me. He doesn't express as much emotion as other Iron Man actors have, and that is a huge problem for me.

Now, if I were to cast any new actors in the role, I've got two ideal men who I think could really rock the role, and make their own in a new way from Robert Downey Jr's...

1) Quinton Flynn: After listening to his KHII Axel voice, I realized that it was that sort of confidence and emotional range that would make a great Tony Stark/Iron Man. He can get angry, he can express sorrow, he can nail the confident, lax aura of Stark; it'd certainly be an interesting take to see.

2) Troy Baker: I know the man is in nigh everything, but he does have a sort of Marc Worden feel to him. Like Quinton, he has a great emotional range as well and can execute the many different traits and quirks of Tony Stark, if given the chance.

...At least, I'm sure these two men would be better than Padsar's...

Saw the trailer and gameplay for the new Lego Marvel video game. Adrian is back as Iron Man. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, even if Marvel is shoving him down our throats, at least they are not pushing Drake Bell as Spider-Man in the game like I was afraid of. It sounds like James Arnold Taylor in the gameplay.

@MilanTheVillain01 If not Josh Keaton, he is the next best logical choice. I'm just really glad Marvel isn't forcing Drake into everything, even if they did feel like they had to in EMH.

And I guess Adrian does make sense, because by the time the game is released, Avengers Assemble would already be airing.

 1 Shout Out! [?]
John Vernon- I know poeple don't like hsio performance but I do. Yeah it's kinda sterotypical hero voice but his performance and acting is good so he gets a pass.

Robert Hays- Really good. He has the charm that I feel Ironman needs but still has the power that's needed. He also did the obssessive side really well and didn't seem to over do it. His one liners were funny but his serious moments were really good, even if the show wasn't the best it at least had good voice work.

David Kaye- A bit too deep than what I want from Ironman plus I haven't seen the episode so I don't know how well he is at lighter scenes. I will say his voice had the power but that's it. I think David could do better in the role.

Tom Kane- I get that he's older TOny but still he should have a sense of oringal TOny, the charming yet a-hole and I don't feel that from Tom. THough he didn't get much time as Ironman so I won't be too harsh.

Adrian Petriw- I feel his performance is underrated, it's very good. know poeple get turned off by kid versions of adult characters but Adrian was very good as Young Ironman. He did a nice touch of slightly differing his voice (his Ironman is slightly deeper) and he had the comical/charming part of Ironman without coming off cheesey but the power that fit for serious/dramtic moments. He reminds me of a young version of Robert Hays' Ironman.

Tom Kenny- It's a different version of Ironman and whole it isn't bad...it does feel like a miscast. He has some elements of Ironman but I'd still put Tom pretty low on the list.

John Cygan- Not bad, I like the thick effects and he does fit the personality but nothing I'd call outstanding.

Stephen Stanton- An acceptable RDJ impression, that's all I can say.

Francis Diakowsky- Kinda generic but maybe if I heard more I'd have a different opinion.

Crispin Freeman- Surprisingly good, he had the charm but a-hole personality but sounded powerful and fit for moments where Ironman was in charge and commanding.

Marc Worden- While it's deep I don't mind it like David's, he has the power but his comical and serious moments felt very natural. It was good.

Chris Burton- Pretty generic.

Eric Loomis- It's odd to think of him as 'impersonating RDJ' when he just naturally sounds like him but in Earth's Mightiest Heroes he does seem like he's trying to do his own thing and he does well. He's a charming a-hole but sounds liek some one you don't want to mess with.

Jason Griffith- I'm surprised, I haven't seen a lot of Jason's work but he sounds really good. Grant it from the clip he doesn't really sound very jokey but I know he cna be plus he sounds very powerful. I'm impressed.

Adrian Pasdar- He's...meh. First off he's inconstant so that's the first thing but he doesn't do badly. There are times where he sounds good but other times he has werid delivery. I will say he was better in Ultimate Spiderman but he shouldn't be reprising his role as much.

Chris Cox- It sounds very different from his Hawkeye and he has the charm and ego of Ironman but I didn't get a sense of power that much. He's rather okay but could be better.

Mathew Mercer- I haven't seen the movie but he sounds okay, a bit like Crispin Freeman but he sounds a bit too serious for my taste.

Overal my top picks are; Robert Hays, Adrian Petriw, Crispin Freeman, Marc Worden, Jason Griffon and Eric Loomis

Robert Hays - My first Iron Man. I think his voice still holds up, he was just put in a kinda mediocre series.
David Kaye - I really enjoyed his performance as Iron Man. I would like to hear him again, but Marvel seems to play favorites when it comes to voice actors.
Tom Kenny - He`s always fun to listen to, and this performance was no exception.
John Cygan - A good performance overall.
Stephan Stanton - Ditto.
Crispin Freeman - Different, but it works.
Marc Worden - I dont think this clip does him justice, but I think he is one of the best of Iron Mans VAs.
Eric Loomis - At first I thought he sounded to light(used to Marc Wordens deep voice), but now I love him. He gives Tony so much personality in AEMH. I`m gonna miss him as Iron Man.
Jason Griffoth - Surprisingly good.
Adrian Pasdar - Aahh, Marvels current favorite Iron Man voice actor. Sometimes, he doesnt sound too bad, but other times(like in the Iron Man/Hulk movie trailer), he sounds horrible!
Chris Cox - Better than Adrian, not as good as Loomis. I say he`s somewhere in the middle.

David Kaye and Marc Worden get my top votes.

I think most of them do a pretty good Iron Man, though some are better as Tony rather than Iron Man and vice-versa. For example, I think Eric Loomis makes a great Tony Stark, but a mediocre Iron Man. I know it sounds weird, but that's what I think.

@Nightmare Crusher It's primarily because Iron Man usually has a filter effect applied to his voice, while Tony doesn't, thus leading to drastically different voices. As well, some actors have voiced Tony, but not Iron Man, or vice versa.

Eric Loomis for Iron Man. I know a lot of people say he's emulating Robert Downey, Jr., but tt's just that he sounds like him--Marvel posted an interview with him a while back and it turns out that that's his actual normal voice, so he just sounds a lot like him.

Speaking of RDJ, I wonder why he also didbn't voice Tony in armor in the first game, given he did reprise the role of Tony out of the armor for it.

That said, Robert Hays, Crispin Freeman, John Cygan, and Marc Worden are pretty good, too. Tom Kane was good in Next Avengers and Adrian Petriw is good in Armored Adventures, though I don't care for the deaging of the character.
