Voice Compare » Iron Man » Iron Man
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Iron Man with sound clips and images.
I know this Voice Compare has been LONG overdue and it's about time we have an A-list super hero from the Marvel Universe that isn't part of Spiderman or X-Men. Ladies and gentlemen I give you IRON MAN!
Been living under a rock and never heard of Iron Man? That's ok here's some basic character info. Iron Man is a super hero in the Marvel Universe. His alter ego is Tony Stark; a billionaire playboy, genius engineer and owner of Stark Industries. Tony Stark created the suit after an accident which left him with a severe injury during a kidnapping.
His captors wanted him to build them a destructive and powerful weapon but Tony instead created a powered suit of armor to save his life and escape captivity. Tony then uses the suit to protect the world as Iron Man.

Special thanks to Pokejedservo, TylerMirage for additional sound clips.
EDITOR'S OPINION
Many of these voice actors were great so it's hard for me to "declare" a clear winner. Some of my favorites however are David Kaye, Eric Loomis, Marc Worden and Stephen Stanton.Jackson_H

I personally prefer the more serious Iron Man, so I'm going to go with Matthew Mercer.

When I first heard Adrian's Iron Man he just seemed kind of meh to me, not bad, but not noteworthy. Now every time I hear him he sounds worse and worse to me. Please Marvel, find someone else. Just Eric Loomis would be nice.

Saw the trailer and gameplay for the new Lego Marvel video game. Adrian is back as Iron Man. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh well, even if Marvel is shoving him down our throats, at least they are not pushing Drake Bell as Spider-Man in the game like I was afraid of. It sounds like James Arnold Taylor in the gameplay.

@MilanTheVillain01 If not Josh Keaton, he is the next best logical choice. I'm just really glad Marvel isn't forcing Drake into everything, even if they did feel like they had to in EMH.
And I guess Adrian does make sense, because by the time the game is released, Avengers Assemble would already be airing.

Jeff Bennett as Iron Man anyone? I can see him pulling off both Tony Stark and Iron Man. Him or Nolan North.

John Vernon- I know poeple don't like hsio performance but I do. Yeah it's kinda sterotypical hero voice but his performance and acting is good so he gets a pass.
Robert Hays- Really good. He has the charm that I feel Ironman needs but still has the power that's needed. He also did the obssessive side really well and didn't seem to over do it. His one liners were funny but his serious moments were really good, even if the show wasn't the best it at least had good voice work.
David Kaye- A bit too deep than what I want from Ironman plus I haven't seen the episode so I don't know how well he is at lighter scenes. I will say his voice had the power but that's it. I think David could do better in the role.
Tom Kane- I get that he's older TOny but still he should have a sense of oringal TOny, the charming yet a-hole and I don't feel that from Tom. THough he didn't get much time as Ironman so I won't be too harsh.
Adrian Petriw- I feel his performance is underrated, it's very good. know poeple get turned off by kid versions of adult characters but Adrian was very good as Young Ironman. He did a nice touch of slightly differing his voice (his Ironman is slightly deeper) and he had the comical/charming part of Ironman without coming off cheesey but the power that fit for serious/dramtic moments. He reminds me of a young version of Robert Hays' Ironman.
Tom Kenny- It's a different version of Ironman and whole it isn't bad...it does feel like a miscast. He has some elements of Ironman but I'd still put Tom pretty low on the list.
John Cygan- Not bad, I like the thick effects and he does fit the personality but nothing I'd call outstanding.
Stephen Stanton- An acceptable RDJ impression, that's all I can say.
Francis Diakowsky- Kinda generic but maybe if I heard more I'd have a different opinion.
Crispin Freeman- Surprisingly good, he had the charm but a-hole personality but sounded powerful and fit for moments where Ironman was in charge and commanding.
Marc Worden- While it's deep I don't mind it like David's, he has the power but his comical and serious moments felt very natural. It was good.
Chris Burton- Pretty generic.
Eric Loomis- It's odd to think of him as 'impersonating RDJ' when he just naturally sounds like him but in Earth's Mightiest Heroes he does seem like he's trying to do his own thing and he does well. He's a charming a-hole but sounds liek some one you don't want to mess with.
Jason Griffith- I'm surprised, I haven't seen a lot of Jason's work but he sounds really good. Grant it from the clip he doesn't really sound very jokey but I know he cna be plus he sounds very powerful. I'm impressed.
Adrian Pasdar- He's...meh. First off he's inconstant so that's the first thing but he doesn't do badly. There are times where he sounds good but other times he has werid delivery. I will say he was better in Ultimate Spiderman but he shouldn't be reprising his role as much.
Chris Cox- It sounds very different from his Hawkeye and he has the charm and ego of Ironman but I didn't get a sense of power that much. He's rather okay but could be better.
Mathew Mercer- I haven't seen the movie but he sounds okay, a bit like Crispin Freeman but he sounds a bit too serious for my taste.
Overal my top picks are; Robert Hays, Adrian Petriw, Crispin Freeman, Marc Worden, Jason Griffon and Eric Loomis

Robert Hays - My first Iron Man. I think his voice still holds up, he was just put in a kinda mediocre series.
David Kaye - I really enjoyed his performance as Iron Man. I would like to hear him again, but Marvel seems to play favorites when it comes to voice actors.
Tom Kenny - He`s always fun to listen to, and this performance was no exception.
John Cygan - A good performance overall.
Stephan Stanton - Ditto.
Crispin Freeman - Different, but it works.
Marc Worden - I dont think this clip does him justice, but I think he is one of the best of Iron Mans VAs.
Eric Loomis - At first I thought he sounded to light(used to Marc Wordens deep voice), but now I love him. He gives Tony so much personality in AEMH. I`m gonna miss him as Iron Man.
Jason Griffoth - Surprisingly good.
Adrian Pasdar - Aahh, Marvels current favorite Iron Man voice actor. Sometimes, he doesnt sound too bad, but other times(like in the Iron Man/Hulk movie trailer), he sounds horrible!
Chris Cox - Better than Adrian, not as good as Loomis. I say he`s somewhere in the middle.

Can't believe i haven't commented on this yet. D:
David Kaye and Marc Worden get my top votes.
I think most of them do a pretty good Iron Man, though some are better as Tony rather than Iron Man and vice-versa. For example, I think Eric Loomis makes a great Tony Stark, but a mediocre Iron Man. I know it sounds weird, but that's what I think.
I honestly don't get the appeal of Adrian Pasdar though. I'm not saying he's awful, I just don't think he's anything special, as either Tony OR Iron Man.

All of them are pretty good in their own ways, I feel that John Cygan would be a better older Iron Man while Jason Griffith would be a better younger one but they are good nonetheless. I would have to say though that Eric Loomis is the best because he really sounds like a millionaire.

Why do we have separate compares for Tony Stark and Iron Man? Anyway, I pick Eric Loomis.
Reply
said at 6:25 PM on Thu Sep 20 2012
@Nightmare Crusher Because Tony Stark doesn't appear in Marvel vs. Capcom or Marvel Super Hero Squad. Only Iron Man does. One appearing doesn't always mean that the other necessarily will.
Replysaid at 10:15 PM on Thu Sep 20 2012
@Dannybee92 And that matters why? We don't have different compares for Bruce Wayne and Batman or Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
Replysaid at 10:22 PM on Thu Sep 20 2012
@Nightmare Crusher It's primarily because Iron Man usually has a filter effect applied to his voice, while Tony doesn't, thus leading to drastically different voices. As well, some actors have voiced Tony, but not Iron Man, or vice versa.
Replysaid at 10:24 PM on Thu Sep 20 2012
@NCZ That does make more sense. I actually thought it might have been due to filter effects.

It's a three way tie between Eric Loomis, David Kaye and Marc Worden. Though Crispin Freeman, Adrian Pasdar, Stephen Stanton did a great job too.
Tom Kenny and Adrian Petriew were great too even if they aren't the most accurate of depictions.
If I we're to pick a winner I'l go with Marc Worden.

2. David Kaye. Now he really surprised me, Kaye really gives Iron man that strong and heroic voice. Only problem is his voice sounds a little too dark for Iron man.
I also liked Marc Worden, Crispen Freeman and Robert Hays too.

Eric Loomis for Iron Man. I know a lot of people say he's emulating Robert Downey, Jr., but tt's just that he sounds like him--Marvel posted an interview with him a while back and it turns out that that's his actual normal voice, so he just sounds a lot like him.
Speaking of RDJ, I wonder why he also didbn't voice Tony in armor in the first game, given he did reprise the role of Tony out of the armor for it.
That said, Robert Hays, Crispin Freeman, John Cygan, and Marc Worden are pretty good, too. Tom Kane was good in Next Avengers and Adrian Petriw is good in Armored Adventures, though I don't care for the deaging of the character.

I like Eric Loomis the best he sounds just like Robert Downey, Jr and I think this voice style fits both Tony Stark and Iron Man well just like Robert Hays did when he had the role since Iron Man should NOT sound deep and gruff like the Hulk or Thing or sound like a robot both Hays and Loomis nails the character profile of both Iron Man and Tony Stark the best. I hope more work comes Eric Loomis way in Iron Man or in other voice work. Let's hope we get a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DVD movie like we got a comic book.

I know Marvel is trying to keep it similar like in the movie, but i dont know... it's getting iritating.

It was fun in Iron Man 2 videogame but now in the avengers serie he doesnt give that same impression. He is a good Robert Downey Jr voice but not an Iron Man voice.

Robert Hays for me is the best. I know Season 1 of the 90s Iron Man sucked but they kept him for Season 2 and he was fantastic. He really got it right, from being incredibly paranoid in the Iron Armour episodes to having a really bad heart in the final episodes. I think he got the character down and was really good, he was great when he appeared in Spider-Man too!

But if you want my opinion on who acted least like the character I'd say Tom Kenny's version.
Though to be fair The Super Hero Squad Show is targeted towards young children so all the characters act a little silly and childish.
Tom Kenny still a fantastic voice actor veteran though. :)

@Jackson_H I completely agree here. Tom Kenny's voice for Iron Man just didn't cut it. That's not his fault though; The Super Hero Squad Show sucks and is an absolute disgrace to the rest of the Marvel Universe.

I suppose I could but all the voices would kind of sound the same as these voices, they wouldn't have that robotic filter thing.
Only voices that would sound a little different are:
Crispin Freeman
Adrian Petriw
David Kaye
Marc Worden
I'll ask the other admins about this :)

I believe Robert Downey Jr. will actually voice Iron Man this time for the Iron Man 2 video game. When it's available I'll make sure to add him too. :)
