Voice Compare » Inspector Gadget » Dr. Claw

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Dr. Claw with sound clips and images.
The second in our series of Inspector Gadget compares gives us the evil Dr. Claw. Dr. Claw is one of the rare examples within this franchise of a character who not only had the same voice actor in both seasons of the original show but also in the series pilot. However, apparently Don Francks originally replaced Welker for the main series, and recorded about 35 episodes before Welker was brought back and was able to re-record most of Franck's episodes before they aired, except a few, 4 to be exact. The voices are very easy to distinguish from each other. Of course, you may recognize that Welkers Claw voice sounds very similar to both his Darkseid and his un-vocoded Soundwave voice. Finally, in Gadget and the Gadetinis Brian Drummond took on the role.

Martin is excellent as Claw but he's only 2nd place in my opinion.

Reason being is because he sounds rather hammy at times + the fact that Frank will always be Dr. Claw to me.

@Ross123 I have to agree, I never seen the new series but Martin is very good especially considering how bland most of the voices in the new series feel

Martin is quite good. The part at the end is a bit iffy, but I'd chalk that up to the material.

Frank's a classic and it is clear why, it's just done perfectly. It is a little harder to judge now a days because so many have tried to copy this but Frank's take outclasses them all.

Martin is surprisingly good, it has similar qualities to Frank but different enough to be his own take. Though the "spoiler" line and onwards loses me a bit he is still good.

Don is okay, has a Jim Cumming sound to it, but isn't deep enough and in some places sounds strained.

Brian is a great actor but he sounds like your average joe trying to do Claw. I would even go so far as say he's a miscast.

@Music Meister I kind of agree on your point about Brain Drummond.

My goodness. Roach is pretty impressive. And he also seems to be having a ball playing this role.

I still like Welker (although I still call this voice his Darkseid voice, because that's the first character I've heard with that voice), but Roach and Francks are pretty impressive, too. Drummond is okay, but a tad forced (it makes me wonder why they didn't get Roach for this instead of Drummond).

@Starscreamsfan They didn't get Roach there because Gadgetinis was a Vancouver production and Roach is a Toronto-based actor.

@CatsTuxedo Ahhh, that explains it. Thanks a lot, CT ;)

Dang, Martin! You now in second place for me!

1.) Frank
2.) Martin
3.) Don
4.) Brian

All four are good, but it's a matter of comparing "really great" to "really good".

Martin is my new second favorite. I wasn't sure what to expect from him tbh, because I wasn't very familiar with his work, but wow he does a great job!
My vote still goes with Welker though, I mean come on, he practically invented that voice.

Going with Frank(obviously) though Brian's take isn't bad. I admit Don's sounds like Sabretooth with more of a rasp but for a different take it's not too bad. It was a bit distracting hearing that voice on the old show when they couldn't get Frank though.

Frank Welker is the best Dr. Claw. That voice is scary.

Brian does a good job, but don't really like how he sounds when he yells. Don is alright. He was a good fill-in.

@Polyester Funk Kevin Michael Richardson would be a good Dr. Claw. Just listen to his Shadow King.

I wonder if Clancy Brown would make a good Dr. Claw.

They're all good, but Frank Welker nails it. Second would be Brian, and Don at third place.

Frank is my favourite though Don & Brain both did average impressions.

I remember finding Don Francks's Dr. Claw voice strange as a kid, in those four episodes he did the voice (especially in "The Coo-Coo Clock Caper.") I was so used to Frank Welker, who was and still is the best Dr. Claw (he even reprised the role on Robot Chicken!)

Frank Welker wins of course, he made the character his own with his distinct voice. But for what its worth Don Francks did do a fairly good imitation, probably not the best but not too bad either. Not a fan of Drummond as Dr. Claw, I prefer his role as Vegeta personally.

@pete *Drummond

Don't hear Jim as much now but he would be perfect in the role.

I have never seen a source say anything other than Welker for DrClaw so i would need to see proof of this before I take it too seriously.
