Hulk Hulk

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Hulk with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Hulk

The Incredible Hulk is the result of a gamma bomb when Bruce Banner was caught in the blast; exposed to radioactive particles. Banner would then frequently transform into The Hulk when angry or had high levels of adrenalin. The Hulk is easily enraged and brutish. The Hulk is one of the most powerful beings in the Universe and his strength increases with his rage.

Although JB Blanc voiced Hulk before in various points of the Incredible Hulk movie, here he sounds too soft for this angry and loud character. Still he's a good casting choice nonetheless.

JB is a good cast choice, but his performance here is too soft for the character; I guess they wanted a more articular version like in World War Hulk (given the choice quotes) but still, needs more of a gruff texture.

Fred Tatasciore is the perfect Hulk voice IMO. He nails everything about the Hulk and his roars are just epic. I love his EMH take the most.

Lou Ferrigno, Michael Dobson and Rick D. Wasserman are also quite great in the role. One thing that I noticed about Wasserman is that sometimes he sounds like Clancy Brown.

Mark Gibbon is good, but I think Michael Dobson is the better Canadian Hulk. I wouldn't mind if Scott McNeil or the other Dobson brothers got a chance to voice him.

Travis works for the SHS version, and could work for the traditional version.

Peter Cullen makes Hulk sound too dumb, but he could have done better.

Bob Holt is the best 80's Hulk voice. Great roars.

Peter Lurie is okay to me.´

John Cena is not a bad casting choice, but with better voice direction, he'd be good.

Max Ferguson is fine. Not bad, not good, just fine.

Ron Perlman sounds silly.

The worst has to be Andrew Jackson.

Gotta admit. Cena actually did a pretty decent job here.

But yeah, my personal favourites here are Fred Tatasciore, Michael Dobson, and Lou Ferringo I'd say. The only one I'm not too big on is probably... Mark Gibbon honestly.

@HylianBelmont I'd say some of the others werent exactly top-notch either. Ferguson, Jackson, & Holt arent as good as Gibbon IMO. I think they sound sort of like Paul Bandey actually.

@Starscreamsfan I agree, Bob Holt is the best! I wish we had more of his audio clips being used on here of his vocal performances as the Hulk. ESPECIALLY of his many Hulk roars. Fred is good of course but at times his vocal delivery sounds more like an angry screaming man instead of an angry monster.

VC thoughts update

Lou Ferrigno does a commendable job as the Hulk. It's pretty surprising that he got the chance to lend his voice in later projects, whereas in the 70's TV show, the Hulk's roars were always provided by Ted Cassidy and Charles Napier. But still, Ferrigno does nail the anger and the sweetness, making him just as endearing and emotional as he was in live-action.

Next place would have to go to Bob Holt. Honestly, this is the voice I imagine whenever I read a Hulk comic. He nails the power and the rage, and those roars he provided are so epic. Honestly, Holt was a pretty underrated actor and this is my favorite role from him.

Peter Cullen works perfectly for a more lighthearted take. He really does a good job at sounding imposing and savage, even if he tends to sound goofy at times.

Fred Tatasciore is really good as the Hulk, but there are times where he can sound kinda unnatural. Still, he does seem to be channeling Bob Holt quite well, despite the unnatural sound of his voice at times.

Max Ferguson works quite well for the Hulk's earlier appearances. He sounds more like a Universal monster, but that's how the Hulk was written back then.

I also enjoyed Ron Perlman, Andrew Jackson (mainly for nostalgia), Peter Lurie, Travis Willingham, Rick D. Wasserman and Michael Dobson in the role.

I'm not big on Ang Lee, Mark Gibbon and John Cena's takes. Lee sounds kinda weird, Gibbon sounds pretty unnatural most of the time and Cena is pretty disappointing (he could work under better direction, though).

My input is practically the same with Batman; Fred Tatasciore IS the definitive Hulk!

No one even comes remotely close. There's just something about how he plays him that's so gratifying, that primal, almost animalistic texture to his yelling, or that deep voice from the diaphragm, it even sounds deeper than some of KMR's roles to an extent.

Sure, Lou Ferringo was good for the time, and even still conveys some good vocals for the movies; Rick D. Wasserman is also pretty similar in tone and vocal texture, and Travis Willingham does have plenty of potential for a good Hulk performance, but in the end, no disrespect to rest of the aformentioned actors, but Fred Tatasciore IS Hulk!

Both Lou and Rick are tired at second place, with Travis at third

While I still hold my merits on how no one can truly top Fred, I still think Kevin Michael Richardson, John Dimaggio, or even Dee Bradley Baker would still be good choices, KMR especially since he's practically in the same league as Fred when it comes to voicing deep, tough sounding brutish characters.

And I guess Scott McNeil, Nolan North or even Troy Baker would be good to listen to, Troy in particular with his Groot voice; typecasts aside there's always Crispin Freeman, Imari Williams, Paul Dobson, Neil Kaplan, Patrick Seitz, or maybe even Eric Bauza or Matthew Mercer given their vocal range from what I gather.

I also agree with Autovolt with some of his ideas, especially Chris Sabat.

@Troodon2 Shoot, I forgot to comment on Michael Dobson. X0

I'm impressed, I honestly put him in second place. He almost sounds like a lighter Fred, hence why I sometimes compare the two to one another. (though he did sound a bit more like Patrick Seitz in some spots from what I heard)

In fact the best way I can describe Michael is his Hulk's like a blend between Fred and Lou.

Again, I am sincerely sorry not to have mentioned him in my comparison; but all the same he's pretty dang good.

ANOTHER BONUS: David Kaye anyone?
said at 7:50 AM on Mon Jan 2 2017
@Troodon2 You also forgot to mention Bob Holt. :(
said at 9:17 AM on Mon Jan 2 2017

For the time, Bob was alright, same with Ron Perlman, that's all I can say.

In fact I'm not even thrilled with Mark Gibbon, Andrew Jackson or the rest I didn't mention. Not that they're bad actors (as far as I know) but they're just not as impressive as the ones I mentioned.

So I'll be frank, and NOT Frank Miller, just frank; I didn't forget Bob Holt, I just didn't have much to say, but again he was still good for his time.

 11 Shout Outs!

Hulk's one of my favourite superheroes ever, I mean he's a raging monster who screams and smashes but he also has a heart too, Hulk isn't the easiest character to pull off since you need to have a voice that can sound monstrous but still make him human and I feel out of all the VA's here the one who pulls him off is Fred Tatasciore.

Fred has been voicing him over a decade now and it's not hard to see why? He has such a deep voice but also can pull off his angry yelling perfectly. I think one thing that really tipped the odds into Fred's favour is the fact Hulk as of the EMH cartoon has begun to speak in complete sentences and sound and act a lot more stable and less like he's going to snap, become unruly and attack his own teammates. He has his moments of loosing control and really saying some disturbing things but he still has his heart and humanity even more now. It's one of the few good things that Jeph Loeb kept over from EMH both Fred and Hulk's personality. I honestly think Fred Tatasciore is to The Hulk what Kevin Conroy is to Batman...maybe even more so.

Lou Ferrigno would have to be a close second, he played him in the old Hulk TV show psychically and then having him voice him in the cartoon in the 90's was a brilliant choice. Before Fred, Lou was easily the definitive and to some still the best. He does have a gruff deep voice but has a lot of heart and soul to the role. I've seen Lou in person and he's a really genuine nice guy.

Mark Gibbon much like Fred Tatasciore, has a really deep monstrous voice though maybe not as refined however it still fits really well. Easily the best Canadian Hulk voice. I'd love to see him voice a EMH styled Hulk.

Michael Dobson is such a out of the box casting choice him as The Hulk. He's one of the few VA's whose range is truly extraordinary to do high pitch raspy characters to low gruff voices. His Hulk sounds vicious and feral and weirdly enough a lot like Robin Atkin Downes's Abomination. I like Dobson as Hulk but now I'd rather have him as Abomination instead.

Rick D. Wasserman is amazing as The Planet Hulk Hulk, he conveys a gruff, deep savage tone but also pulls off his more intelligent speaking pattern well. He's definitely one of his best voices, If Fred is unavailable and so is Lou, Rick has to reprise for sure.

Bob Holt is easily the best pre-90's voices for Hulk, having a really deep monstrous voice.

It's great to see Peter Cullen using his range though I think he makes Hulk sound maybe a little too dumb.

I love Ron Perlman as a VA but his Hulk sounds really silly and inconsistent and not in a intentionally well. "The ugly rock thing like you" just makes him sound ridiculous, the middle he sounds a bit forced but at the end with the clip he sounds what he should have done from the start...*sigh*

Travis Willingham is perfect for the Super Hero Squad Show version which played up his stupidity and childish attitude, However he may be could work as a traditional version though.

Max Ferguson sounds Frankenstein's Monster more than Hulk though Frankenstein was a major influence on Hulk in the beginning. It's OK for what it is.

Ang Lee and Mark Ruffalo both work as the live-action movie versions even if its all pitch shifted but at the end of the way they aren't anything remarkable.

Andrew Jackson is definitely the worst voice here, he doesn't sound like Hulk at all. He doesn't even try to make Hulk sound gruff, he sounds like a normal guy and he doesn't even have any appropriate Hulk like lines to say.

Overall Fred's my favourite but I do love Lou, Mark, Michael and Rick just as much in the role.

BONUS: Since Fred usually is the go to guy for his voice, if he was unavailable and they wanted to go with someone fresh, someone one like Clancy Brown, JB Blanc, Paul St. Peter, Christopher Sabat or J. David Brimmer could all do the role of Hulk well.

@Zillah I think RAD, Matthew Mercer, & Michael Dobson all sound very similar naturally (verdi baritone, going by what I listen to opera)

Hulk & Abomination are all hitting 1st octave notes (i.e. bass, like KMR's voice), but they don't have the mass & volume that Tatasciore (or KMR himself) have.
said at 7:42 PM on Tue Sep 20 2016
@Zillah However, despite their softer timbres, I really dig RAD & Michael Dobson as these characters. They clearly display some serious range here & I'd even like to hear Matt do this sort of voice. He's done great Dan Green impressions so far.

@The Doctor It was literally

@TylerMirage I know that won't change/prove anything, but I would be ready to bet some real money on Ruffalo being the one who said the line. While Hulk's voice is heavily modulated, it does sound like Ruffalo and a lot different from Hulk's roars (which we know for fact being Ferrigno).

@The Doctor Maybe Ferrigno recorded them, but his recordings were replaced with Ruffalo's recording.
TylerMirage (Admin)

@The Doctor I was always a proponent of it being Ruffalo, too. Like you said, it does sound like him (and of course, if you've got Ruffalo's facial movements driving the animation of the character via mo-cap, why have someone else provide the voice?), but it also sounds similar to Ferrigno's voice, which has a distinct "hollow" sound to it due to his partial deafness.

Conflicting reports are unfortunate, but alas, we have to live with 'em.

Gonna be honest, I could never decide between Lou Ferrigno or Fred Tatasciore. The former provides a great sympathetic take on the character while sounding tough and dimwitted, but not TOO dumb at the same time and the latter sounds really menacing and downright furious. Both are really great at the sound effects too such as the growls and the roars. It's why I never even voted in this comparison before, I feel like voting for one of them would be neglecting the other.

That said though, I've always found Hulk to be a somewhat dull character, which is another reason why I never voted here. He's just never been my favourite Marvel character and I've always found him a bit one dimensional. Sure Bruce Banner is a complex character, but Hulk's just all about anger and smashing the nearest thing he can find, which I've always found pretty uninteresting. I like how he's done in a few things like EMH and The Avengers, but other than that...ehhh...

However, that all changed with Planet Hulk. In that movie I was actually really invested in the character, and I was anxious to see what would happen to him, as well as in seeing what transpired in the hostile alien world around him.

Rick Wasserman was fantastic in the role, he did the battle grunts and the voice in such a menacing way that there were times where I honestly thought it was Fred in the role. Seeing Rick D. Wasserman in the end credits pleasantly surprised me. He played him with the sympathetic nature of Lou Ferrigno's take along with the pure rage of Fred Tatasciore's take and I think he pretty much perfected it. The only drawback I can even think about with his performance is that it's very different from the conventional takes on the character, but that's mostly why I like it so much as well as what kept me so interested in the movie, and especially since before then I never found Hulk particularly compelling, it's pretty much an advantage in my book.

So yeah, going for Rick D. Wasserman, for playing the only incarnation of the character I've ever been interested in. I still respect Tatasciore and Ferrigno's performances as well though, so they tie as a close second for me.
said at 6:51 PM on Sat Dec 27 2014
@Metabad I'm glad to hear someone else feels the same about the character. Personally, I get REALLY tired of him being either a big, cute and stupid brute version who's just kind of a mildly cranky 'bro' who wants to smash s*** and crack jokes or he's nothing but screaming and brutality. I like when the Hulk carries the same depth as Bruce Banner instead of being like a separate character altogether. I mean, yeah, it's fun to watch him go berserk, but when he does it all the time it gets pretty old. I wish they portrayed him as more of a frustrated, contemplative and deep character more often.

The more I think about it, I think I like Rick Wasserman the best myself. I don't think he does the grunts and roars as well as Fred, but he does a fair job at them and his deep, smooth voice and quiet intensity really appeals to me for some reason. Fred's speaking voice for the Hulk is really good too, but the lisp thing he does irritates me a little.

I don't know, I think for now I'm gonna change my vote to Rick. I may change back to Fred later.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Hmmm, I never noticed a lisp in Fred's Hulk voice, and even after listening to him again I still don't.

Anyway, I can see why you love Rick's voice, which, to be honest, continues to grow on me as time goes on. I still think Fred is better in this role overall, but Rick still does a fantastic job nonetheless.
said at 9:02 PM on Sat Dec 27 2014
@Zillah "Lisp" was probably a bad word to describe what I'm hearing, but I couldn't think of anything else because of my woefully limited vocabulary. My bad. Anyway, yeah, I still love Fred's Hulk, but something about Rick's just clicks with me.
said at 6:19 AM on Thu May 14 2015
@Zillah There's a very subtle lisp when Tatasciore's Hulk says "HULK IS STRONGEST THERE IS!!!"
said at 12:31 PM on Thu Aug 20 2015
@Metabad In the comics by Planet Hulk he was a lot more developed, and I think separated from Bruce. Even older stories did that too. You want to know how the comic goes? He's pretty three dimensional after that.

 3 Shout Outs!
1. Fred Tatasciore - What can I really say? He nails it right on the head every time, gets just the right amount of savageness and those screams are just outstanding, and he's also shown his ability to play a calmer Hulk as well.
2. Michael Dobson - Another fantastic fit for Hulk. He's got a great growly deepness that suits Hulk very well.
3. Lou Ferrigno - Classic Hulk voice, and he managed to show his soft side very well, while still getting the anger down.
4. Mark Gibbon - another well done performance and voice for the Hulk, sounding quite indimidating. 8.5/10
5. Peter Lurie - Too bad he didn't get much to work with. otherwise he sounds very fitting. No real complaints here.
6. Rick D. Wasserman - He plays what seems to be a more reserved version of the Hulk, and he does a good job. 8/10
7. Travis Willingham - Yes, this is a less serious take on the Hulk, but he does a pretty good job with what he's given, and even shows potential for a more serious version.
8. Bob Holt - Decent, but the savageness can get forced to the point of sounding more silly than scary. Again, not bad, but it tends to sound rather unnatural to me.
9. Peter Cullen - nothing special for Peter Cullen, seemed to focus a little too much on the primative speech pattern. Not horrible, but not great either.
10. Ron Perlman - Ron is sadly pretty forgettable in this role, as he tends to sound too much like a normal guy. On top of that its just kinda weird hearing Ron sound so campy. Again, not horrible, but nothing special either.
11. Max Ferguson - Yeah, he sounds too calm to fit the Hulk, but to be fair he was the first voice for the character, and that was in the 1960's, so I guess I can forgive this one.
12. Andrew Jackson - Ehhhhh, to be fair he is technically voicing the Bruce Banner persona more than he is the Hulk, but hearing that voice coming from the Hulk appearance just sounds wrong to me.

@Starscreamsfan To be honest, some of my opinions have changed slightly since I posted this comment. And yes, my opinion on Bob is one of them. I do now find him to be better than I did before. Infact, I'd say he was actually very good. Ranking was fairly difficult for me with some of these guys I'll admit.

I still think Fred Tatasciore is the best here, but again, I do feel Bob Holt was better than I originally gave him credit for.

@Zillah Tatasciore does an awesome job. He seems to be channeling Bob Holt quite a bit (especially when he roars), and he's a pretty worthy successor to Holt. That's what I imagine Holt to sound like if he was still alive and reprised the role. So yeah, Tatasciore really does a top notch job.

Gotta go with Fred, he is fantastic as the Hulk. Lou Ferrigno did a great job as well. He had the power and rage, yet he also brought a sweetness to him that really made you feel for the guy.

Mark Gibbon and Michael Dobson sound pretty good, and Rick Wasserman was alright. Ron Perlman just sounded too much like a normal guy.

Fred is of course Hulk but I've always Lou made Hulk sound a little lovable. The way he says "Betty" and cries makes me want to hug him and tell him it'll be okay. Fred didnt so that, he did the sympathetic side of Hulk a few times but not like Lou.
So yeah I do think Fred is the perfect Hulk but Lou is a very close second to me.
said at 9:04 PM on Thu Jan 2 2014
@Music Meister Yeah, I've always hoped that Fred would get to play hulk in a series like the '96 series so he would get a chance to show more range than angry and smart talking hulk. I think a prequel series to A:EMH that follows Banner from after the accident to when Hulk get's smarter and banner decides to help him become a hero would work well for that.

I'm sorry to say this but Max (Hulk's original voice) fails to earn my respect here. I know that characters can be hard to voice when it is the 1st time getting voiced but just by looking at Hulk, you can tell how he would most likely be voiced.

I know it'd be beating a dead horse at this point, but I'm putting my vote on Tatasciore. Not just because he gets the voice down, but because he's voiced the character in so much different contexts and still has it seem like the same character, which definitely takes skill.

And it's been brought up, but I should reiterate that Ferrigno's clip needs to be fixed soon, especially considering it's the second-most popular performance.

Max Ferguson: He sounds generic and does not sound at all angry. 4/10

Bob Holt: He was ok, though it does not sound very natural. 6/10

Peter Cullen: I love him as Optimus Prime, but I don't care for his Hulk. It sounds too comedic and a little forced. 5/10

Ron Perlman: Perlman does not sound very monstrous and more like an unintelligent human, which does fit with some interpretations of the character. Though he does again sound a little forced. 7/10

Lou Ferrigno: I think Lou works well for the early Stan Lee Hulk, but not so much for the Savage Hulk. Based on my first note, I give him 8/10

Peter Lurie: Lurie is a natural in the role and does a good job with the little material given to him. 7.5/10

Mark Gibbon: Gibbon does a great job at the Savage Hulk, making him sound very monstrous and angry at the same time. 9/10

Fred Tatasciore: Tatasciore IS The Hulk. He plays a perfect Savage Hulk in Hulk Vs. Wolverine and a perfect Calm Hulk in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which I think would also work for the Gray Hulk. 10/10

Travis Willingham: While he is playing a more lighthearted Hulk, Willingham does suit the comics darker version as well to a certain extent. 8/10

Rick D Wasserman: He is perfect for the Greg Pak Hulk, as he sounds tough while at the same time not sounding thuggish. 9.5/10

Andrew Jackson: All I have to say is that he is terrible, just like all the other voice actors in the game. 1/10

Overall, Fred Tatasciore is easily my favourite, with Rick D Wasserman at second and Mark Gibbon at third.

The classical Savage version of Hulk is obviously the original and superior incarnation to me. That's why Mark Gibbon (2nd), Lou Ferrigno (3rd), and Fred Tatasciore (1st) were the correct voice choices. The first few voice actors for him sounded nearly similar to cave people. And I have no real problem with that, but a more vicious tone wouldn't be much to work with, no? Travis Willingham... Okay, first off: Why is Hulk in TSHQS? Second: the voice itself is unique in its very own way, but Hulk is just... what's the word I'm looking for? Oh, yeah! Pathetic in that entire show. And then Rick D Wasserman... I haven't watched that movie before, but judging by the voice clip, I guess he's alright! However this version of Hulk seems to be a bit more intelligent when I hear him. Dunno if anybody else feels the same. And finally for Andrew Jackson for voiced the Hulk in those crossover fighting games I loved so much as a kid (except for MvC2, due to some unbalanced problems), when actually speaking, he uses the Banner persona... O.o

@ tylermirage while I'm aware of that scene and those lines.

The only small problem is that those lines are when Bruce Banner had control of the Hulk so it wasn't the "real" Hulk's natural voice.

Jackson, not to undermine you or correct you, but Tatasciore's Hulk DOES have dialogue in 'Ultimate Avengers'. He says this: "It worked! Betty, see? I told you!"..."Yes. Everything's gonna' be fine."..."THIS IS MY FIGHT! STAY OUT OF IT!", in addition to lots of roaring and shouting. :) (Just some editing required) Plus, I think this Hulk should be added because he sounds different enough from his "Hulk vs." version. I posted a link to the scene, if that's alright.

True that Ferrigno's voice for the films is a lot deeper. I'll talk with the other admins about it.

But as for Tatsciore's Ultimate Avengers, I was originally going to use that voice but funny thing is he didn't have many lines as the Hulk. Lots of roaring not much talking.

Bruce Banner had plenty of lines but was a different voice actor. Michael Massee I believe.

FYI you may think some VA are missing but chances are they voiced Grey Hulk or Devil Hulk which IMO are different characters and deserve their own VC.

BUT I am missing Graig Robertson (Hulk 2003 VG) and Andrew Jackson (Marvel vs. games e.g. Street Fighter & Capcom).

Anyone have sound clips or can point me in the direction of them I'll add them to this VC asap.

 3 Shout Outs!
I chose Bob Holt, mostly when he roars. He was a great cartoon Hulk, Lou was a great TV Hulk, and Fred plays a great modern day Hulk.
