Green Lantern / John Stewart

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Green Lantern / John Stewart with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Green Lantern

John Stewart, while he hasn't made as many appearances outside of comic books as Hal did John is still a fairly well known Green Lantern nevertheless.

In the DCAU he was voiced by Phil LaMarr and John Stewart is quite possibly one of Phil LaMarr's finest performances. Well it definitely helped on how this Green Lantern had some very good characterization in the two Justice League shows. (In which before the DCAU Justice League shows some fans have joked that DC's thought process on him was "Lets make Green Lantern but oh make him a black guy!") But Phil LaMarr's handiwork as John Stewart much alike the show itself is a great usage of drama with an occasional dose of humor.

In Justice League Heroes, John Stewart was voiced by Michael Jai "Spawn" White. Is it as great as Phil LaMarr's take on him? No but to be fair while John Stewart's role here is by no means minor it is a lot more "supporting" than anything else. But still Michael Jai White's handiwork on this Green Lantern was definitely fitting and pretty well done so it works on its own merits as well.

So in short Phil LaMarr was a great Green Lantern while Michael Jai White was pretty good as well.

(Note: Ken Thomas voiced John Stewart in DC Universe Online and he wasn't bad, sure its a little on the generic side compared to the likes of Phil LaMarr. But Ken's work wasn't bad especially when you view it by its own merits as it does work pretty well for the role nevertheless. Anyways I am still going with Phil LaMarr but both Michael and Ken are pretty good alternatives.)

I think I'll give my full thoughts on all of John Stewart's voices.

In my honest opinion, Phil LaMarr is the perfect John Stewart. He has this deep voice that is 100% fitting for a cool, no-nonsense guy. He also has a lot of charisma and commanding presence in the role, but another thing that I really love about his performance is his chemistry with Maria Canals-Barrera's Hawkgirl. Their chemistry just feels so natural and never feels forced in any way. One of my favorite roles from Phil, a great performance from a great show and the voice I always hear for John Stewart in a Green Lantern comic.

Michael Jai White is a very good fit for John Stewart as well and easily one of the highlights of Justice League Heroes.

KMR gives a good performance, but they really should have chosen someone else to play the part. They could have gone with Phil since he was in Young Justice, but I can see why they decided to choose another actor for the part. Still it's a good performance from KMR, but generic compared to Phil and Michael.

Roger Cross and Ken Thomas are underwhelming. With better direction, they'd be good or even great.

So yeah, Phil LaMarr gets my vote.

It will forever blow my mind Phil LaMarr here, played both the shy Virgil Hawkins, rather laid back Static Shock incarnation of that role, and the boisterous, courageous John Stewart Green Lantern as well: it goes to show just how good Phil is at inflection- not only can he change the timbre of his voice to suit the age of a role appropriately, but his deliveries are completely different to boot. Needless to say, his reputation as one of the best modern day voice actors in the industry, is very well warranted.

Anyway, my vote's going to Phil LaMarr on this one, but I do like how Kevin Michael Richardson sounds the polar opposite extreme of his Drek performance from Ratchet & Clank, despite using a similar voice, but inflecting that performance in a heroic, positive vibe, rather than an evil, villainous one.

Michael Jai White's a bit lighter than the other two in timbre, but he's just as effective in giving off the same intelligent, calm vibe with his John Stewart Green Lantern portrayal at the same time: very impressive.

Ken Thomas' voice is decent, but his delivery lacks enthusiasm and energy, not quite enough presence to it.

Roger Cross is...okay...but somewhat generic and bland, though.

Phil LaMarr is to John Stewart, as Kevin Conroy is to Batman. The character is somewhat of a no-nonsense kind of hero who's gotta get the job done, but still has some charisma thanks to Phil's performance.

While not as good as Phil, I think Michal Jai White is still pretty good with what he's given. Not as stern but still pretty cool to listen to, less of a cop and perhaps more of a forensics type-guy.

Kevin Michael Richardson is... well Kevin Michael Richardson. I don't mind the cast, but Kev really doesn't do anything here to make this take on John stand out from his usual performances. Maybe if he leaned closer to his Bulkhead voice, or maybe try and emulate his Mal Duncan voice more he might have done better.

Roger Cross was okay, thought it's a shame really how he didn't have a whole lot to work with, but it's alright.

BONUS: This may be typecast, but I'd love for Khary Payton to voice John; Ike Amandi, Greg Eagles, Chris Jai Alex, Imari Williams, James Mathis III, Jonathan Adams, Keith Silverstein or Keith Ferguson making notable choices as well. I can even see TJ Storm or Hannibal Buress making good with John to.

VC thoughts update

Phil LaMarr does a good job as John. His delivery is great and he has the right amount of energy.

Kevin Michael Richardson does a pretty good job as well. He does have authority and I like his smooth delivery.

Michael Jai White is a little bit lighter, but he works well in the role too.

Ken Thomas is kinda off. He does have an authoritative vibe, but his delivery is kinda unenthusiastic.

Roger Cross is kinda bland.

Phil LaMarr IS Green Lantern John Stewart, he has a cool, deep no-nonsense type of voice but still can have some fun with the role which is great for a mostly serious type of character. It helps them keep him from being totally boring.

Michael Jai White and Ken Thomas both sound very good, White is a bit better for sure as his voice just makes him sound way cooler and more fun to listen to. Thomas's direction isn't as strong but not horrible in the slightest.

Kevin Michael Richardson just sounds too much like his usual self, I'm afraid. I wish they could have done something a bit more different with his take. I just don't feel KMR as Hal was the more inspired casting, it didn't help that Phil LaMarr was in the YJ cast as some other characters. I get they wanted someone different but KMR, I just don't think was the best person they could have got.

Phil LaMarr will get my vote.

BONUS: If Ocean ever did a Green Lantern project of any kind, I'd love it if they could get Dean Redman (Dutch from Black Lagoon) to voice John. Holy Crap now that's a voice that might actually give Phil a run for his money. He just has this cool no-nonsense badass type of voice and I'm sure he could have fun with the role. I also would love to see Beau Billingslea, John Eric Bentley, Martin Roach, Rick Keeling and aww heck maybe even Keith David should have a shot as John Stewart?

Not my favorite Green Lantern, but still a pretty cool character. LaMarr really gave one of the better performances in a show that I really didn't enjoy (as I've said before) and he really made him a memorable character. Richardson and White are also pretty awesome casting choices.

2) Kevin Michael Richardson
3) Michael Jai White
4) Ken Thomas

Phil LaMarr, being my favorite VA, is obviously the best. But I don't want that to blind myself to these other guys performances. Michael Jai White I think did a fantastic job, and Ken Thomas was pretty good too. KMR's performance was a little jarring at first, being that he already voiced several characters in the show, but by "War", I got used to it and even started to like it, ironically in the scene when he talked back to back to Martian Manhunter.

I really don't like KMR's John. The fact that he voices Dr. Fate and Mal Duncan in the same show with more or less the same voice doesn't help either. Phil LaMarr gets my vote.

@TheVengeanceKnight He uses his regular voice 99% of the time. His Martian Manhunter voice in YJ is not one of those times.
said at 6:35 PM on Thu May 3 2012
@pete J'onn is the only time he doesn't use his regular voice (which I really appreciate; he even reminded me of Carl Lumbly a little). He does have range, it's just disappointing he rarely uses it in projects like this.
said at 9:39 PM on Thu May 3 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight I know that that was just an example. Bruno "Ugly" Manheim is another example on the show and his take on The Joker is another. He mainly uses his regular voice because it usually is the best voice for most characters he does like Panthro or Bulkhead.
said at 10:29 PM on Thu May 3 2012
@pete I call it weak voice direction.
Foxwolf (Admin)
said at 4:43 PM on Fri May 4 2012
@TheVengeanceKnight it's not weak direction. show's have a budget to stick to. and if they can utilize their existing cast, they will. and if that means we get more characters in each episode as a result of this, I'm fine with that.

Notice how many times Young Justice has had the Justice League appear in episodes and have no dialogue (Green Arrow and Flash in particular). It's because they don't have the budget to pay the actors.

@TheVengeanceKnight I will admit that as awesome as I find KMR's voice, having it overused in an episode kind of makes it lose it's buzz sometimes.
said at 10:10 PM on Fri May 4 2012
@Foxwolf And someone like KMR has a huge vocal range, believe it or not, and using it for only one character (J'onn) and leaving everyone else with the same generic KMR voice is wasted potential and weak voice direction.
said at 9:32 PM on Sun Jan 20 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight It does make sense since KMR's African American and using a different voice other than his own well African American makes no sense.
said at 3:52 AM on Mon Jan 21 2013
@pete Then why didn't they get him to voice Static? :-P

@TheVengeanceKnight It fits a grown man like John Stewart but a teenager would be pushing it. I have no problem if he uses that voice for a grown African American but teenage one that's a different story.
