Voice Compare » Green Lantern » Green Lantern / John Stewart
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Green Lantern / John Stewart with sound clips and images.
John Stewart, while he hasn't made as many appearances outside of comic books as Hal did John is still a fairly well known Green Lantern nevertheless.

EDITOR'S OPINION
In the DCAU he was voiced by Phil LaMarr and John Stewart is quite possibly one of Phil LaMarr's finest performances. Well it definitely helped on how this Green Lantern had some very good characterization in the two Justice League shows. (In which before the DCAU Justice League shows some fans have joked that DC's thought process on him was "Lets make Green Lantern but oh make him a black guy!") But Phil LaMarr's handiwork as John Stewart much alike the show itself is a great usage of drama with an occasional dose of humor. In Justice League Heroes, John Stewart was voiced by Michael Jai "Spawn" White. Is it as great as Phil LaMarr's take on him? No but to be fair while John Stewart's role here is by no means minor it is a lot more "supporting" than anything else. But still Michael Jai White's handiwork on this Green Lantern was definitely fitting and pretty well done so it works on its own merits as well.
So in short Phil LaMarr was a great Green Lantern while Michael Jai White was pretty good as well.
(Note: Ken Thomas voiced John Stewart in DC Universe Online and he wasn't bad, sure its a little on the generic side compared to the likes of Phil LaMarr. But Ken's work wasn't bad especially when you view it by its own merits as it does work pretty well for the role nevertheless. Anyways I am still going with Phil LaMarr but both Michael and Ken are pretty good alternatives.)

Phil LaMarr, being my favorite VA, is obviously the best. But I don't want that to blind myself to these other guys performances. Michael Jai White I think did a fantastic job, and Ken Thomas was pretty good too. KMR's performance was a little jarring at first, being that he already voiced several characters in the show, but by "War", I got used to it and even started to like it, ironically in the scene when he talked back to back to Martian Manhunter.

Phil, no question. I still think it's one of his best performances ever...and since this is Phil we're talking about, that's no mean feat.

Phil LaMarr is easily the best. The others were okay too.

I really don't like KMR's John. The fact that he voices Dr. Fate and Mal Duncan in the same show with more or less the same voice doesn't help either. Phil LaMarr gets my vote.

@TheVengeanceKnight He uses his regular voice 99% of the time. His Martian Manhunter voice in YJ is not one of those times.

@pete J'onn is the only time he doesn't use his regular voice (which I really appreciate; he even reminded me of Carl Lumbly a little). He does have range, it's just disappointing he rarely uses it in projects like this.

@TheVengeanceKnight I know that that was just an example. Bruno "Ugly" Manheim is another example on the show and his take on The Joker is another. He mainly uses his regular voice because it usually is the best voice for most characters he does like Panthro or Bulkhead.

@TheVengeanceKnight it's not weak direction. show's have a budget to stick to. and if they can utilize their existing cast, they will. and if that means we get more characters in each episode as a result of this, I'm fine with that.
Notice how many times Young Justice has had the Justice League appear in episodes and have no dialogue (Green Arrow and Flash in particular). It's because they don't have the budget to pay the actors.

@TheVengeanceKnight I will admit that as awesome as I find KMR's voice, having it overused in an episode kind of makes it lose it's buzz sometimes.

@Foxwolf And someone like KMR has a huge vocal range, believe it or not, and using it for only one character (J'onn) and leaving everyone else with the same generic KMR voice is wasted potential and weak voice direction.

@TheVengeanceKnight It does make sense since KMR's African American and using a different voice other than his own well African American makes no sense.

@pete Then why didn't they get him to voice Static? :-P

@TheVengeanceKnight Phil Lamarr is also African American as is Static but Kevin did his dad.

Awesome clip of Phil there. He's my pick. Grew up with him and really loved his performance.

Gonna be odd man out again, but I'm going with Michael Jai White on this one, though KMR and Phil LaMarr were good, too.

@Anicomicgeek Another chance of opinion here, but, I'm going with Phil LaMarr for John Stewart.

They're all good but I think Phil LaMarr is the definitive John Stewart voice to me.

Phil built the character for media outside of the comics.

They're both good, but I would also have to go with Phil. John Stewart is way better than Hal.

Phil LaMarr IS Green Lantern hands down. I prefer Phil's lantern over The original Hal lantern anyday.
