EDITOR'S OPINIONToday on the Ghost in the Shell Voice Compare section we have the "Family Man" of Section 6 who is a great shot who is known as... TOGUSA! We shall start things off with the original Ghost in the Shell Movie in which Christopher Joyce was the first guy to voice Togusa. Unlike the TV shows while Togusa wasn't a bit cameo or anything like that but he did have a fairly secondary role lets just say. But to be fair Christopher does do a pretty good job in his performance as it does suit Togusa's personality pretty well even if it is above average at best. Now don't get me wrong its certainly not a bad performance but its not one of the movie's most memorable performances.
In Ghost of the Shell Stand-Alone Complex (and for most of the recent English GITS releases) since Christopher Joyce was for the most part out of the voice acting business in the 2000s Crispin Freeman takes over the role. Crispin was quite a natural in this role (granted Togusa has a bigger role this time does kind of help) but still Crispin's voice and performance for the role was very fitting for Togusa quite well. (Not too mention on how its good proof that Crispin can do a good Dramatic performance without sounding too "brooding".) Basically its a very good example of Crispin Freeman's voice acting skill and is a fine example of the voice acting in Ghost in the Shell SAC.
Now as for the GITS SAC OVAs in which Bandai used Ocean Studios to do the English voice work Trevor Devall takes over the role here. While some of the choices of voice casting in those OVA's have been considered questionable compared to the Californian-based Voice Cast of the TV series but Trevor Devall is one of the better alternatives for the main cast here. Oh sure Trevor's Togusa voice doesn't really sound like Crispin's Togusa voice but to honest I am actually not all that bothered as it also genuinely fits Togusa rather well. Of course I will also say the same thing with Trevor's performance as Togusa as well as its probably one of the better performances in that dub.
Last (and actually not the least) is the Animax dub of Ghost in the Shell SAC made for the SE Asia TV Market in Hong Kong in which Darren Pleavin is the voice of Togusa here. First of all let me say that this is a fairly interesting change of pace for Darren here (in which even thought this was an interesting change of pace as well). Darren's voice and performance for the role does work well with Togusa (not as much as the other two but its good on its own merits). Darren's overall performance does indeed work well with Togusa and its probably one of his better performances. Overall they all did well but I liked Crispin Freeman and Trevor Devall the most with Christopher Joyce and Darren Pleavin at close behind.
