Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Sonny the Cuckoo Bird with sound clips and images.
EDITOR'S OPINIONToday for the 2nd General Mills VC section's Voice Compare is everybody's favorite Chocolate Cereal addict... SONNY THE CUCKOO BIRD! Sonny was originally voiced by Chuck McCann (whom also voiced Sonny's Grandfather "Gramps".) While Gramps did most of the talking in most of the commercials (and often exploit Sonny's addiction to Cocoa Puffs every chance he had for his own ends but that's a different story) Chuck did do a memorably goofy and insane voice for Sonny. Basically Chuck's voicework for Sonny was an interesting example of his early voice work.
During the 80's and 90's even though Chuck was still active in voice work apparently Larry "Lion-O" Kenney took over the role of Sonny. Granted this is going to be one of those voice compares in which all of the other VA's where pretty much impersonations of the original VA but still Larry does do a pretty good impersonation. Granted one could tell the difference between Larry and Chuck's respective Sonny voices but Larry's voice for Sonny does sound similar in which it certainly works for the role here. While Sonny apparently wasn't quite as Cuckoo during this time compared to the original commercials or the more recent ones (granted he certainly had his moments but still) Larry's voice work for Sonny did work for the role.
Ever since 2005, Commercial VA Tex Brashear has taken over the role as he too does a very good impersonation of his predecessor's respective Sonny voices. Granted in the more recent Cocoa Puffs commercials they definitely played out how Sonny was definitely Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs in which Sonny was a addict trying really hard not to cave into his addiction here. Okay I apologize on how I might be making these Cocoa Puffs commercials sound more serious than they are but still Tex definitely gave an interesting over-the-top performance for Sonny here. Overall they all did well as Sonny the Cuckoo bird in their own way for this American Cereal Icon.
