Garfield Garfield

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Garfield with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Garfield

Garfield, created in 1978 by Jim Davis has become one of the most well-known cartoon felines in history. He is known for his laziness, his love for lasagna and for tormenting Odie, Nermal, and anyone else that stands in his way or annoys him.

I can't think of any other character in the history of voice-overs in which EVERY person who has voiced the character has done an outstanding job.  Other then Garfield that is! Lorenzo Music, Frank Welker and Bill Murray all have turned in fantastic interpretations of the character.

I even like Dave Coulier's impressions of the character, but before someone asks why we haven't included him, we have learned from the Voice Director on the show that Coulier never voiced the character in the cartoon, despite what other sites across the net have rumored.

In the end this one is truly too hard for me to pick. I absolutely love what each one of them has brought to the character. I will leave this one up to the voters!

It's been a while since I associated myself with Garfield but Lorenzo Music is definitely the strongest of them. It screams bored, pessimistic lazy fat cat and is just the most memorable.

Out of all the successors, Frank Welker is probably the most consistent. While it's a little nasally it still works and fits the character right.

Jon Barnard has potential but the acting falls rather short. He sounds so slow and bored even for Garfield. Definitely wasted potential.

Bill Murray sounds far too high and energetic for the character. Definitely not a fan.

When I read the recent Garfield comic strips, I can still hear Lorenzo Music's Garfield voice in my head as I read them.

Lorenzo Music IS Garfield! His very bored one note monotone voice just fits this lazy fat cat to a tee.....why I don't know? It just does, probably because half the time he is bored deadpan snarker so it fits, but he can express enough emotion for when the time calls for it. It's hard for me to not imagine or hearing his portrayal as Garfield whenever I read, it just fits so much.

Frank Welker is a surprisingly great voice match for Lorenzo Music, he sounds almost like him though I can still hear Frank in it at times. He's rather effective in the role, just not as much as Lorenzo IMO.

Bill Murray, if I'm going to be honest, I like his performance as Garfield in the movies. I know the irony that Peter Venkman is once again Garfield and that whole debacle Bill had with Lorenzo and yet here we are, it's come full circle. He was a natural fit for the role, even if the movies weren't really at all that great....I did love them as a kid though.

Jon he sounds like he's out of his mind recording this. He's definitely the weakest.

In the end I have to give this to Lorenzo Music, He IS Garfield and may he rest in peace.

BONUS: I can see Scott McNeil or Kyle Hebert being great as Garfield.

Lorenzo Music- By far he is the best Garfield ever. He fit just right for that fat cats attitude.
Sad that he's not here on earth anymore.
RIP Lorenzo :(
Frank Welker- Okay but Lorenzo Music is irreplaceable which means nobody can replace Lorenzo. Frank does the impression of Garfield real well. I liked him in Garfield's Fun Fest though.
Bill Murray- Well, you kind of say that works since Lorenzo, the voice of Garfield, did the voice of Peter Venkmen, Bill's character, on Ghostbusters cartoon but it does not work. It's an iffy and not suitable Garfield impression. He needs to work on it more and he will be become as superior as Lorenzo was.
Jon Bonard- Yuck! It it makes Lorenzo Music
look like he's about to have crack while having a stroke. Jon is an awful Garfield voice. Who idiot that it would be a good idea to hire a probably over 50 year old chain smoker to voice Garfield!
Not a very good idea. Where was Frank Welker at that time?

Overall, I'm going with Lorenzo Music.

#1) Lorenzo Music- Classic, distinct, and the clear best: hilarious as well.
#2) Frank Welker- Does a great imitation of Lorenzo, although he's a lot less distinct in the role, and just that: an imitation.
#3) Bill Murray- Different, but it works out alright: not as good as the other two, though, IMO.
#4) Jon Barnard- Nope: completely off base, and yeah, he does sound drunk or totally out of it in the role.
said at 7:47 AM on Sun Aug 3 2014
Jon Barnard sounds more drunk than deadpan, I may not be too big on Frank's performance, but I have no idea why he couldn't reprise the role. Needless to say Jon's definitely the weakest in the role.

@Metabad I have this game... in European in anything other than English. And it was kinda poor

From what I known the developer has made a lot of poor licensed games so I assume they were pretty lazy in the voice direction as well

It's an odd trait to go by, but whenever I think of the Garfield comics strips, I always picture Lorenzo as Garfield while reading the dialogue. The personality and characteristics (mainly his sullen mood and sarcasm) of his performance match up very well with the comic strips.

@DreamMaster08X See, I always think of Frank Welker's voice.

@lnytune1 Different strokes for different folks. Welker isn't a bad choice, though. Murray is good, too, but that probably sounds the least I'd imagine when I read the comics.

@CatsTuxedo That is just so out there and unique that I kinda hope that actually happens someday.
said at 11:47 AM on Sun Aug 3 2014
@Metabad Thanks. I think David's low, suave sound would be quite fitting of Gar's snarkiness.
said at 3:38 PM on Thu Nov 21 2013
I personally think Frank Welker puts the best personality twist on Garfield. Although it's like 85.7% percent his natural voice, I like it! Lorenzo is good and all.... and he's the original.......... but he sounds too forced, and doesn't have that lazy, lasagna-loving cat expression that Welker does. Bill Murray is just for the movies and is basically talking.
said at 12:38 PM on Wed Oct 2 2013
I've watched the Garfield Show a lot so my favourite has 2 be Frank.

Lorenzo would still be voicing Garfield if he was still alive today but sadly he isn't.

Bill was actually pretty good in the films which kinda surprised me.
said at 4:00 PM on Sat May 11 2013
Frank oddly sounds like Lorenzo mixed with Barney. Soooo no.

I like Bill Murray's impression though. Because it's really more of a "normal" voice which is what he should sound like. He's a little less lazy sounding as it's a less lazy portrayal of the character story and visually, it just sounds like what he'd sound like if he weren't a cartoon to me. :)

I have to admit that Frank Welker does a great job for his voice impression of Lorenzo Music's voice it's really good! But my vote still goes to Lorenzo all the way! ;)

Lorenzo of course with Frank as a close second, then Bill.
said at 4:21 PM on Sat Jul 21 2012
Lorenzo's is more like the strip he just says his thoughts while not actually speaking while Bill Murray and Frank Welker actually speak. Lorenzo is the voice most people hear in the strip and he's the original and the best so I'll go with him.

That being said it's ironic how Murray complained about Venkman sounding like Garfield but ended up voicing him years later.

Welker does a great impression of Lorezo but can't top him.

As far as Dave Coulier is concerned i think the rumor originated from him replacing Music on Real Ghostbusters.
said at 4:59 PM on Fri Apr 11 2014

Yeah. I saw that on and it didn't sound right. It's hard for me to picture Dave doing a Garfield voice. I hear if anyone subbed for Lorenzo on the show when he was ill, it was probably Frank.

Anyway, as for my vote, I have to go with Lorenzo. Though Frank is pretty much spot on with the imitation, I grew up hearing Lorenzo's voice as Garfield in the specials and in most "Garfield and Friends" episodes. It's a shame he's no longer with us.

@MatthewC17 well 'overcasted' is not a word - and I don't really think its true at all, when someone is that crazy talented they deserve to be cast as much as possible, plus he does an excellent Garfield voice!

@OptimusSolo Well I just find it a tad annoying that he's in everything non-anime
Also Bill Murray's Garfield is hilarious and in my opinion more entertaining to listen to

Lorenzo Music is nothing short of perfect voicing this character. He captured Garfield's sarcastic and mellow attitude to a T. Frank Welker and Bill Murray are also worthy successors, and continue Garfield's character just as great!
said at 10:40 AM on Sat Jul 21 2012
Well, it's about time! Anyway, I'd be crazy if I didn't give this one to Lorenzo. He WAS Garfield (and vice versa). However, Murray was an interesting choice (now Garfield has been played by Peter Venkman TWICE) and Welker is a worthy successor (I hear he's a pretty mellow fellow, perfect for playing Garfield). Also, I wonder if it would be possible to find some voice clips of Scott Beach as Garfield, as he played him in a few commercials prior to Lorenzo Music.

Lorenzo Music's deadpan stoic voice is absolutely classic and iconic as Garfield!

Though if anyone were to succeed him, I'm glad its Bill Murray. It makes sense after all, since Lorenzo portrayed Peter Venkman's cartoon counterpart in The REAL Ghostbusters. So its quite fitting that Peter Venkman's live action actor takes over voicing Garfield. That's probably old and common knowledge by now, but hey now its here just on the off chance that some of you didn't know.

Anyways, I like Bill Murray's take, I like how casual he sounds, he makes the role his own while at the same time staying true to his predecessor's performance. In the end I'm glad he was chosen as Garfield, he was probably the most natural replacement I've ever heard in all honesty.

Frank Welker is probably my least favourite here, he isn't terrible I suppose, but his voice sounds a bit too high pitched for my liking. If he made the voice just a bit deeper it would've been perfect but as it stands he was just okay at best.

So I'm ultimately voting for Lorenzo Music, with Bill Murray as a VERY close second and Frank Welker at a rather distant third.
