Cobra Commander

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Cobra Commander with sound clips and images.
Franchise: G.I. Joe

Cobra Commander makes his long overdue appearance amongst the Joes Voice Compare selections. Cobra is the famous antagonist from the Joe Series and leader of the terrorist organization known as Cobra.

The voices of the original Starscream and Cobra Commander were at times exactly identical. The main difference was that Latta's Starscream voice was run through a vocoder to produce digital echo effect of the Transformers. Latta's Cobra Commander was raspier and would lisp on the letter 's' to resemble the classic snake sound. During the DiC seasons both Latta and McNeil voiced the Cobra Leader.

In both Valor vs Venom and Spy Troops Michael Dobson took on the role.

Marc Thompson voiced the character in Sigma Six and Charlie Adler voiced him in Resolute.

The latest voice over of the classic villain took place when Joseph Gordon-Levitt worked as Cobra on the Rise of Cobra video game.

Future VA Suggestion:

Vic Mignogna would be excellent as Cobra Commander, using a More Boisterous and Serpentine version of his Hideki Kurohagi voice....

I'm honestly going to change my vote to Chris Latta. It's a tough call, but he puts SO MUCH energy and passion into the role that he makes Cobra even more memorable.

He also made him very sympathetic in the movie with his slow descent into becoming an actual snake. Chris was an awesome actor as both Starscream & Cobra Commander and I am going to vote for him.

Charlie Adler was my old favorite and he's still really good, but I think he plays the Commander too seriously. I get that Resolute is a much more serious take on GI: Joe, but I still feel CC should have a bombastic, comedic edge.

Marc Thompson is epic too. His British-accented voice combined with the energy he puts into the role makes his portrayal awesome. He does a great job with channeling Chris Latta and he screamed like no other (except Latta). Unfortunately, his voice can get a little forced at times, though.

Michael Dobson was WAY too whiny and grating in Spy Troops, but he got a lot better in Valor vs Venom, where he sounded both commanding and entertaining. Although this is all from memory, so I can't give him a super high place since I can't judge him fairly. He has a great laugh though.

Robert Baker is next, the voice itself is too deep, but he sounds really epic and his delivery is fantastic. I'm hoping he gets to reprise if a GI: Joe 3 is made.

Scott McNeil does a great impersonation of Chris Latta. No complaints from me, I'd like to hear him reprise again.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the game sounds too gruff, thuggish, and generic. Still, it's cool that he reprised. In the movie, he had a really cool voice for "The Doctor" even though it doesn't fit CC. When he actually put on the mask and portrayed Cobra Commander he sounded really generic.

Chris Burnham sounds really generic and boring. Still he's one of the better voices in that show and I guess he does a decent job channeling JGL.

Although I enjoy Marc Thompson & Charlie Adler a lot, I slightly prefer Christopher "Chris Latta" Collins on this one. My other runners-up would be Mike Dobson & Robert Baker.

BONUS: I think guys like Dameon Clarke, Steve Blum, Troy Baker, Cam Clarke, Steve Blum, Nolan North, Robin Atkin Downes, Tom Kenny, Frank Todaro, Patrick Hallahan, Terrence Stone, Scott Whyte, Frank Welker, Michael Bell, Wayne Grayson, & Ted Lewis could make a good Cobra Commander.

I'll admit Cobra Commander is not the easiest villain to get right, he's usually either too comically inept and bumbling or too scary and menacing. I feel he needs to be in the middle, one that can be comedic and fun but really menacing when necessary.

Unlike Starscream where I have more of a preference for a gruffer lower voice, I like the screeching higher pitch sounding voice and I'm going to go with Chris Latta.

while his Starscream gets a bit grating, for some reason I like him a lot more as Cobra Commander, I guess i'm weird like that. Honestly as Cobra Commander he sounds more menacing than ever did as Starscream and of course he has that snake like quality in his voice which helps.

Charlie Adler is my second favourite, he nails the more menacing version of the character. The only issue is that it's all he does really, I'd like to see him with a bit more emotion than that because honestly Charlie is the exact kind of actor that can make this character work perfectly.

Marc Thompson is also really good with his take, sounding very raspy while being very menacing and theatrical. Performance wise this is closer to what Charlie should be doing.

Scott McNeil deserves MAJOR points for how spot on his Chris Latta impression is, it's a shame this strains his throat doing this, I wish we could get him to voice Starscream in other Transformers series.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as much as I despise Rise of Cobra, I always like his voice for "The Doctor", one of the more interesting modulation sounds I've heard in a Hollywood movie. The depiction of CC is awful but the voice almost had me forgiving it....almost.

Robert Baker is alright but generic sounding. Still a neat sound, but I really don't think Cobra Commander should have a deep voice.

Michael Dobson, I usually love Michael's work but his Cobra Commander.....sounds too manic and I can't take him seriously at all. Shame since I really loved his Starscream.

Chris Burnham sounds so generic.

I wish Chris Latta was still alive, it'd be interesting to see how he'd approach it, more likely it'd be like Charlie or Marc's takes.

BONUS: Considering since they've voiced Starscream before, Scott Whyte naturally should have a stab in the future, Steve Blum would be great too his Prime Starscream showed he can do more emotional range than just being either menacing or pathetic, he could be both. lol I'd also suggest Tom Kenny and Sam Riegel. For non-Starscream VA's I think Brian Drummond, Troy Baker, Dameon Clarke, or Christopher Ayres would be excellent.

Charlie sounds like a mix of Mark Hamill and Steve Blum, not bad for a more sinister take. Like Starscream there's way to combine the two, it's a shame he hasn't done more with the latter. Marc is good but kinda generically menacing. Scott and Chris are tied.

I already commented here before; but, eh, I might as well rank all of these babies... or at least give them my opinion anyway, as I'm not big on scores:
Chris Latta - What can I say? He's great; he originated the character! blast. Even though this version of the character was fairly goofy, you can tell he had a blast and I think he could've pulled off a serious version as well, if only he were able to have that chance now.

Scott McNeil - His range continues to amaze me; it's pretty much a pitch-perfect imitation of Latta. Thankfully, he has a good performance to top it off.

Michael Dobson - I prefer the clip from Valor vs. Venom, but in both, I think he's a bit TOO over-the-top. XD He's not bad, though; I think he probably should've used a voice that was closer to his Starscream.

Marc Thompson - It's a decent performance of one of the more serious incarnations; I like how slimy he sounds.

Charlie Adler - Like with Starscream, he does a great job at sounding similar to the original, while still making the role his own; with a more menacing tone to it. Definitely one of my favorites.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - I like JGL as an actor, but not as Cobra Commander; this kind of just sounds like it could be any generic villain.

Chris Burnham - He's alright; I like how he tries to have a bit of a snakey sound to him.

Robert Baker - He sounds cool and it's a pretty good performance; but once again, this voice sounds like it could be used for any old villain.

Charlie Adler is my favorite, the rest were really great too. Seth Green, while not in this voice comparison, was actually a really good rendition of Cobra, but that's my opinion. I basically thought each actor was truly good in their own right, but Charlie Adler wins for me.

Chris Latta is Cobra Commander to me. I know he was kinda silly, but that was the point and it was the 80s.

That being said, Charlie Adler was great. He made the Commander sound scary and like a real world villain. Which was the point of Resolute.

Are you sure that's Scott McNeil? He sounds exactly like Chris. I do believe that he took over after Chris' death, but can he really duplicate him that exactly?

Michael Dobson was pretty good, however he was even more over the top than Latta. If he toned it down some I'd like him much better.

Marc Thompson is rather good, also. He's pretty creepy-sounding.

said at 6:07 AM on Tue Dec 23 2014
@Polyester Funk Actually, Scott's only appearance as Cobra Commander was in Sgt. Savage. Chris was Cobra Commander in every DiC episode he appeared, with the exception of Operation Dragonfire (a lot of people say that Maurice LaMarche played the Commander in that one). But then again, Scott was a great stand-in.

I've only seen the films but I've listened 2 all the clips.

I have 2 go with Joseph Gordon Levitt as I really liked the films (well the 2nd film was very good while the 1st one kinda sucked but I really liked Levitt's performance in it). In my opinion it should have been him in the 2nd film but he didn't want 2 return & I respect that but it would have made it even better. Robert had a good commanding voice though but he & Luke still couldn't make as good as before.

Charlie is good as is Marc.

Michael sounds awful 2 me but he'd make a good Joker from Batman.

Scott is annoying & so is Chris but Chris has got 2 earn my respect for being the 1st person to voice the character which isn't easy.

@skeletonking1234 What I really enjoyed (mostly about the voice, but it also applies to his design and overall portrayal), is that they didn't just say "screw it" to how he sounded/looked in "Rise of Cobra", but they found a natural, story-related reason to make him look more traditional. It's obviously still (or *supposed* to be) the JGL character under that mask, so he SOUNDS similar to how he sounded in "Rise of Cobra", but it's tweaked a little. And he has a reason for wearing his mask and his new costume. Man, I love this CC. :D
said at 7:57 PM on Mon Aug 26 2013
@TylerMirage plus in the film they made him close to being as intimidating as the Renegades Cobra. I just wish he was in the movie for more than 9 minutes
TylerMirage (Admin)
said at 1:29 PM on Tue Aug 27 2013
@skeletonking1234 Hey now, having nine minutes of screentime - even in a two hour movie - is still quite a bit. Consider, Darth Vader was only in "A New Hope" for just over eight minutes himself.

Plus, I kind of liked how the movie wasn't *just* "COBRA COMMANDER IS TEH EVIL!". CC was basically the man in the shadows, pulling the strings. Pryce as The President was the "face" of film's antagonist. You had one guy up front, the other doing things behind-the-scenes.
said at 5:29 AM on Mon Mar 3 2014
@TylerMirage And that fits Cobra Commander perfectly. As in the original cartoon, he tends to be a schemer instead of a fighter, and yet this particular CC does well in the scheming part, but he also looks capable of kicking the good guys' behinds.
said at 12:21 AM on Mon Aug 26 2013
I'm going with Michael Dobson with this one for having the most range while maintaining the high, snake-like quality and the hamminess level that I expect from this kind of character. Scott McNeil's a close second for pretty much being a more natural-sounding version of Latta.

Yeah, I never found myself watching G.I. Joe stuff growing up, but I have to go with Chris Latta.

As far as Charlie Adler goes... I think his voice is too quiet and breathy, and this kind of villain acting is starting to sound generic to me.
said at 12:17 AM on Mon Aug 26 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy Might have to go with you on that sentiment. With this type of acting, the actor isn't really allowed to have that much of an emotional range beyond "scary and evil" because serious works as a whole share this myth that this is the only way to do major villains, presumably because it's "more natural and/or realistic". I find that notion laughable because in a more casual scenario like, say, riffing over a movie with pals or ordering a pizza over the phone, that kind of voice would be utterly out-of-place and thus not truly natural. This is why I usually prefer more light-hearted performances because the actor doesn't have those same restrictions put on them and so they have more elbow room to allow the character to "be themselves", so to speak.
said at 9:22 AM on Mon Aug 26 2013
@CatsTuxedo I agree with how it allows them to be more themselves, but what's especially troubling to me about Charlie's take is that I feel that I've heard nearly the exact same thing before. The whole "menacing villain whispering evilly, then throw in a growl or two, and then a big over-the-top rant where he practically goes GGRRAWW!!!" is just so formulaic and predictable now. Yeah, he kinda sounds creepy, but when it feels like I know what he's going to say, and heck, even HOW he's going to say it before he does then we have a problem.

And plus, some people are suggesting Steve Blum should try the character, and I can see why, because he's played characters almost exactly like Cobra before and he would pretty much be doing the exact same thing as Charlie Adler in his own voice, knowing how boring modern voice direction can be... Heck, listen to Blum's Vilgax clip, it sounds almost note for note the same (the voice as well as the delivery) as what I described above. It all sounds so samey to me now.

@PsychicVoiceSpy What's even sadder is that Charlie(and Steve)could really do the character justice. Cartoons these days need more unique villains.
said at 1:57 PM on Mon Aug 26 2013
@Nightmare Crusher Agreed. Both Steve and Charlie would probably do very well, but if the material and direction wasn't more inspired than this then it would just be more of the same. Cobra Commander is meant to be a funny villain, that doesn't mean he can't be intimidating as well, but the way they did him in the two shows Charlie is in just seem to miss the point overall.

Chris Latta: As the original, he is good, I like how it is slightly lower than his Starscream voice.

Scott McNeil: He does a spot-on Latta impression, very, very good.

Michael Dobson: I have kind of a mixed opinion. He seems like the most comedic version of CC, I think that it's missing the rasp from his Screamer that I feel would have been better. Then again, he didn't have the best material to work with so not too bad overall.

Marc Thompson: He sounds kind of like a cross between Adler and Dobson. Kind of underrated, I think.

Joseph Gordon Levitt: As much as I love JGL for being a total badass, it's hard to compare to the others when his version is so different. I do like it but I'll put it last with great regret because it's so different.

Charlie Adler: I think he's much better fitted to the Commander then Starscream. combined with great writing, he makes the most sinister and evil Commander of them all.

Adler takes an easy first place, then Latta and McNeill tie for second, Thompson third, Dobson fourth and JGL in a regrattable last place. Frowny face.

Chris Latta set the standard and embodies the true essence of Cobra Commander.

While his voice is obviously similar to Chris's Starscream voice... there is a subtle difference with speech and pronunciation. Especially with the reptilian slurring "s" trait.

While all of the other voice actors are talented and bring their own qualities to CC... Chris Latta's version will always be the iconic take!

@OptimusSolo "whiny and puny" isn't exactly a description I would associate with the main antagonist of a franchise.

@TheVengeanceKnight I would for some franchises. An antagonist does not always have to be a brute powerful intimidating character. Some of the best antagonists are usually whiny or sometimes weak in some aspects. Cobra Commander like Starscream were both originally written to be whiny, cowardly at times, weak when it came to certain aspects of leadership etc etc. The world would be a boring place if EVERY single antagonist was some powerful brute force type character. I could make a list of many awesome antagonists who were quite the opposite.

Not being a brute and powerful I can understand, but he/she should at least contain some trace of menace, otherwise he/she fails as a villain.

@TheVengeanceKnight in your opinion maybe...

@OptimusSolo serious?

@TheVengeanceKnight Absolutely, just because YOU have the opinion that those traits make a character fail as a villain does not mean its a fact nor that everyone else has to share that opinion. That's how opinions work my friend :)

@OptimusSolo ...nostalgia, nostalgia everywhere.

@TheVengeanceKnight Nothing I said has anything to do with nostalgia but if that makes you sleep better go ahead and think that lol

@OptimusSolo I still think you're letting nostalgia dictate your opinions rather than deciding things objectively. But, whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess. :-P

@TheVengeanceKnight You can think whatever you would like sir....just know that you are wrong ;)

@OptimusSolo I agree with you. I haven't seen much G.I. Joe stuff yet, but Cobra Commander not being an over-the-top cowardly nutcase at all just feels... wrong. Unnatural.

Latta and McNeil are the best not only when it comes to the higher Cobra Commander voices but best for CC in general. Latta's work is just classic while Scott McNeil's impersonation of Latta's CC voice was amazingly dead-on.

The others are alright as Dobson is an alright "Lighter" Cobra Commander but no where near as good as Scott McNeil. (Though as dead-on as Scott's CC voice was I heard that it supposedly was rather damaging to Scott's vocal cords.) Though I admit I am not entirely sure which type of Cobra Commander is the one in Sigma Six but Marc Thompson was alright as well.

As for the "darker"/lower ones done by Joseph Gordon Levitt and Charlie Adler. While I don't dislike Joseph's handiwork I did like on how Adler's CC voice did suit how they tried to make CC more menacing but still kept it remotely in spirit with how his voice traditionally went.

So yeah I am going with Latta and McNeil with Adler closely behind while the other 3 are at a decent 3rd place.

 1 Shout Out!
Anyone else find it interesting that Adler, Dobson, and Latta all voiced both Starscream and Cobra Commander?

Chris Latta's Cobra Commander stands as one of the best voice performances in history there is no way I could vote for anyone else. I will say McNeil did a good job imitating him but Adler and Dobson are no where close to as good. Cobra is supposed to be somewhat crazy and not so stoic like Adler portrays him whereas Dobson goes overboard with it. Sorry, McNeil and Latta got it right with the happy medium but Latta is a touch better. And it is not EXACTLY the same as Starscream ;)

Wait, is this the Starscream page, or the Cobra Commander page? ;) Huh? Get it? No? *crickets chirping* ...Okay.

Chris Latta sounds too pansy and Michael Richard Dobson sounds too crazy in the first clip, in my opinion.

I'll have to go with Charlie Adler too. He sounds so calm, cool and collected as Cobra Commander. Very spooky. Plus, it reminds me of the "Transformers" films Starscream. :)
