Scar

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Scar with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Fullmetal Alchemist

He is known as Scar because of the X-shaped scar on his face. Scar is an Ishvalan and a survivor of the Ishval Civil War against Amestris. Scar lost his right arm in the war but before his brother died he transmuted his arm onto Scar. This arm is tattooed with rare transmutation symbols and makes Scar a powerful alchemy user. Scar believes that alchemy is a sin against God and the natural world, but it doesn't stop him from hunting down and killing State Alchemists.

In the English dub version of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime series Scar was voiced by Dameon Clarke. For the English dub of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime Dameon Clarke didn't return to reprise the character, so Scar is voiced by J. Michael Tatum.

I think Dameon Clarke brought more in the way of depth and presence to Scar than J Michael Tatum did, but nonetheless, both are great fits for Scar and I have no qualms wih either performance.

Anyone know why Dameon didn't return?

@Unknownsage13 IIRC he'd moved from Canada to work in Hollywood. Texas was a pit stop for him. We only even got him in Borderlands 2 because he was doing Kai as a favor to his old friend Chris Sabat.

We talked about this on Kanzenshuu at one point, & in fact that thread is where it hit me that the pay was really, really low compared to other stuff. Solved a lot of mysteries about VO.

I think both are fricking amazing and I'll admit I've only seen the first 10 episodes of the original (took me a while to get in on DVD, I found brotherhood sooner and watched it first, bit of a mistake in hindsight) but I think Tatum is just a little better, I found his performance to be more natural, sympathetic and intimidating

I'd recommend watching the rest of the original. Daneon's Scar got really, really good around episode 40-ish.

Voted for Dameon because he was great as Scar because in the original he was more focus on and I like how Scar was in that version with his big sacrifice

Tatum good in Brotherhood but i didn't like how quickly Scar gave up on his mission and decided to join them

Man they're both awesome. I've only seen the original so I'm partial to Dameon. I think his acting is better, yet Tatum has a really great voice. I'll report back after watching Brotherhood.

No fanboy rage here, but I'm honestly surprised how great of a lead Tatum has. I thought Dameon was great at this role.

Oh wow both Dameon Clarke and J. Michael Tatum are both phenomenal as Scar, but if I had to pick only one I'd choose Dameon.

I feel Dameon was 100% perfect as Scar, he had a youthful yet deep and harsh sounding voice, and really brought out the most depth he could in the role. The way he questioned what he believed in is phenomenal for raw it feels. He sorta at times slips into his Younger Toguro Brother voice but I think it adds a lot of badassery and coolness to his performance.

Much like Aaron Dismuke as Alphonse, I wish Dameon Clarke could have reprised for Brotherhood. Yeah their is a difference in their depiction, age and mentality but I know he could have pulled it off just the same. Well at least he reprise as Cell for DBZ Kai.

J. Michael Tatum was a great replacement choice to take over for Dameon Clarke as Scar. His voice sounds a bit deeper, heavier, breathier and gruffer and it works for this older, more jaded and more cynical anti-villain/hero but I feel he doesn't have as much of an emotional range as Dameon does. This doesn't mean I dislike Tatum at all in the role, no in fact I rather enjoyed his take greatly. Scar is one of the more unique kind of roles Tatum has done in his voice acting career far different from the aloof bishonens he's usually cast as.

In the end I'm giving my vote to Dameon Clarke but J. Michael Tatum is also just as excellent in the role.

J. Michael Tatum kicks ass as Scar! The other guy sounds too young and not very fitting for a warrior.

Much like Hohenheim, this is one that I really can't pick based on the clips alone, and would have to go watch lots of scenes of the character from both versions to pick a clear winner.

It's honestly hard because there's older Scar and then there's younger Scar.

I like the performances for both characters, they fit very well.

While I haven't watched enough of either show yet (18 for 2003 and 5 for Brotherhood), So far I'd say DAMEON CLARKE!!!! He just gives so much depth to his performance. I like J. Michael Tatums version as well, but I need to hear more from him. Expect an update at some point.

I've always favored Dameon in this role, even though Tatum is great at it too. That seems to be the majority opinion in the comments, yet somehow Tatum is ahead in the polls. :(

Dameon, without a doubt.
I love J Michael Tatum, but his voice for Scar is just so generic and just screams "Hey, I'm a villain."
Dameon's interpretation makes him seem more human, and a bit more interesting than just a strong, intimidating bad guy.
Both actors are great, but Dameon has my vote.

@RenoRebirth

Spoiler Alert for FMA Brotherhood

I haven't finished watching the original FMA yet, but scar isn't a bad guy in brotherhood, he starts out misguided what with all his murders, but scar was one of the main reasons they succeed in brotherhood and gives up on the whole murdering state alchemists plan.

Dameon without a doubt. Dameon makes Scar sound like a mature, pissed off serial killer. He just has a badass voice that would fit any "bad guy". On the other hand, I just flat out don't like Michael's voice. I can't imagine a character that would go with his voice. It's too flat and bland for me to get into it.

They're both playing somewhat different versions of the character, and they both fit for their perspective versions, but I have to go with Dameon Clark. In my opinion his character had a wider range of emotions and I enjoyed it more. But since they are in two different versions of the story it's a little hard to decide which one you feel is "correct". Tatum's is cool too, I just enjoy Dameon Clarke's more.

Dameon Clarke gave a respectable performance in the first fullmetal alchemist series but I like Tatum's take on the character a bit more but in all honesty both were well cast for the role of Scar.

1 . Dameon Clarke - Put a lot more emotion into the character and I strongly disagree with those who complain about him having a " Grr , generic bad guy " voice . I mean , he might at some points when Scar`s extremely angry but otherwise , it`s a very human , sympathetic voice befitting such a complex anti-hero .
2 . J. Michael Tatum - A bit more stoic , grumpy and gravelly , more in line with The Manga Portrayal of Scar . Well done .
So in summation , I like them both but prefer Dameon`s take just a bit more .
