Voice Compare » Fullmetal Alchemist » Scar

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Scar with sound clips and images.
He is known as Scar because of the X-shaped scar on his face. Scar is an Ishvalan and a survivor of the Ishval Civil War against Amestris. Scar lost his right arm in the war but before his brother died he transmuted his arm onto Scar. This arm is tattooed with rare transmutation symbols and makes Scar a powerful alchemy user. Scar believes that alchemy is a sin against God and the natural world, but it doesn't stop him from hunting down and killing State Alchemists.

In the English dub version of the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime series Scar was voiced by Dameon Clarke. For the English dub of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime Dameon Clarke didn't return to reprise the character, so Scar is voiced by J. Michael Tatum.

This is a pretty interesting VC because Scar's personality is pretty different in the 2 shows. While I think Dameon Clarke's voice sounds a bit better, I do think J. Michael Tatum version fits Scar's true personality better (which is based on the manga). Not to mention the slight age difference between the 2 characters. Dameon Clarke's version is a bit younger while J. Michael Tatum's version is older and more mature. I guess I'd call this VC a draw and honestly I like both voices.

Ehhh.....no offense to Tatum, but this is one of those "gotta go with the original" choices. If only Dameon was still VAing

While I haven't watched enough of either show yet (18 for 2003 and 5 for Brotherhood), So far I'd say DAMEON CLARKE!!!! He just gives so much depth to his performance. I like J. Michael Tatums version as well, but I need to hear more from him. Expect an update at some point.

How come Takahata101 isn't here?! He brought true emotion to a man tired of people getting in his way of killing state alchemists. He was the best actor.

J. Michael Tatum, no question. One of the best performances in FMA:B.

I've always favored Dameon in this role, even though Tatum is great at it too. That seems to be the majority opinion in the comments, yet somehow Tatum is ahead in the polls. :(

@Galactic_Cyrus I think there might be a larger amount of people on here who haven't seen the original series and only Brotherhood than those who have seen both.

Dameon, without a doubt.
I love J Michael Tatum, but his voice for Scar is just so generic and just screams "Hey, I'm a villain."
Dameon's interpretation makes him seem more human, and a bit more interesting than just a strong, intimidating bad guy.
Both actors are great, but Dameon has my vote.

Spoiler Alert for FMA Brotherhood

I haven't finished watching the original FMA yet, but scar isn't a bad guy in brotherhood, he starts out misguided what with all his murders, but scar was one of the main reasons they succeed in brotherhood and gives up on the whole murdering state alchemists plan.

Dameon without a doubt. Dameon makes Scar sound like a mature, pissed off serial killer. He just has a badass voice that would fit any "bad guy". On the other hand, I just flat out don't like Michael's voice. I can't imagine a character that would go with his voice. It's too flat and bland for me to get into it.

They're both playing somewhat different versions of the character, and they both fit for their perspective versions, but I have to go with Dameon Clark. In my opinion his character had a wider range of emotions and I enjoyed it more. But since they are in two different versions of the story it's a little hard to decide which one you feel is "correct". Tatum's is cool too, I just enjoy Dameon Clarke's more.

Definitely Dameon Clarke: J Michael Tatum's voice may have a cool stoic delivery but it's very bland and generic. With Dameon, you can feel the anger and sadness in Scar's voice.

Dameon Clarke receives my vote.

@JSD Thank you! Everyone saying that Dameon Clarke just sounds like a generic bad guy with no depth are most likely lying, he sounds conflicted, but he does sound angry most of the time because ALMOST HIS ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE WAS DESTROYED!!! He is a sometimes conflicted, but constantly bitter character, and for good freaking reason.

Dameon Clarke gave a respectable performance in the first fullmetal alchemist series but I like Tatum's take on the character a bit more but in all honesty both were well cast for the role of Scar.

1 . Dameon Clarke - Put a lot more emotion into the character and I strongly disagree with those who complain about him having a " Grr , generic bad guy " voice . I mean , he might at some points when Scar`s extremely angry but otherwise , it`s a very human , sympathetic voice befitting such a complex anti-hero .
2 . J. Michael Tatum - A bit more stoic , grumpy and gravelly , more in line with The Manga Portrayal of Scar . Well done .
So in summation , I like them both but prefer Dameon`s take just a bit more .

Both of these guys did very well with what they were given. I can't make a decision without regretting it in some way.

I wish there was a tie vote for this one haha, both did the version of scar they were given very well so i cant easily pick who i like better. But I do like the older more gruff version of Scar personality wise so i have to pick Tatum

Dameon Clarke sounds like a common thug.

J. Michael Tatum sounds big and hateful. So, I'm gonna go with him.

I prefer Dameon Clarke! He sounds so much better i thought it was just deep enough and emotion was alot better too i loved scars voice, I know his age is altered in the new one but dameon would've been better I think, cuz scar sounds like an old man!!! I wanna clear my throat everytime i hear his voice now T_T...
and scar sounded more intimidating when it was dameon clarke doing the voice and it wasn't too young sounding either, i thought it was just fine...WHY DID IT HAFTA CHANGE!? T_T

I choose Dameon Clarke, and J. Michael Tatum is alright for me, as well. But it's true that Scar's age, as well as his story is altered, so I think the voice change somewhat fits. In the end, I still much prefer the former.

I don't know where you see the physical resemblance between scar and his english voice actors. why the heck does that even matter anyways, their voice is what matters to the story not their face.

I can see why everyone does like Dameon J Clark, he does put more emotion into it. But I don't think that really ever suited scar's character (It suited the 1st anime version fine, but I personally consider the manga version the one and only original). The manga verse scar is actually pretty stoic, and that is what FMA brotherhood is based on. So in that sense, Tatum does a much better job of expressing that part Also Demeon's voicing makes scar sound a lot younger and even more vulnerable, Tatum's doesn't: he sounds older, grimer, and less emotive- which suits me fine, scar was a hobo serial killer, I could never imagine him as a young adult and I never will. he is just not that type of character.

So really I don't think one is better than the other, the scar character in each story is not the same- not in portrayl anyways. So you just take the side/ portrayl of scar you fell in love with

I loooove Dameon as Scar, but Tatum does an amazing job to fill in for him. He had some pretty big shoes to fill. Plus the Scar from the original anime and the new anime are almost completely different, so it makes sense, really, that they'd be different.

Dameon J Clarke was, is and will ALWAYS be Scar to me.
I don't like J Michael Tatum he doesn't match Scars physical appearance, character, or attitude.
Dameon put actual emotion into every single syllable, word and sentence he said.
I would have mad Dameon be the voice actor for Scar again no matter the price.

Dameon Clarke's Scar was this awful, generic "grrr, bad guy!" voice. It ruined the character for me when I watched the dub.

J Michael Tatum's Scar, though, I can barely hear, it's a slightly hoarse whisper.

So, they're both pretty awful. But Tatum's only been in one aired episode thus far, maybe he'll improve.

Both Japanese voices have this eerie presence to them that really sell Scar's anger and the English voices have utterly failed to capture this.

I definetely go with Dameon Clarke: J.Michael,s is bit too huffy and raspy, not having same anger driven passion and almost gentle touch of his God,s word as Dameon had. Dameon,s voice brings, at least to me, more life and justice to Scar,s tormented character: he is still to me one of the best, badass and tragic characters in FMA story.
Sorta makes you wonder, if his voice actor was changed to match Manga,s description to the character, as Scar was in Anime a bit younger than his Manga self. Similary, i have noticed that Rose,s voice is lighter compared to first anime, despite the fact that Colleen Clinkenbeard returned to the role.
