Black Knight

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Black Knight with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Fire Emblem

Zelgius, also known as the Black Knight, is a central character in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and its sequel, Radiant Dawn. A former student of the legendary swordsman Greil, Zelgius later kills Greil, beginning a fierce rivalry between himself and Ike. As one of the Four Riders of Daein, he seemingly serves the Mad King Ashnard, but his true allegiance belongs to the corrupt bishop, Sephiran. Zelgius is a steadfast, loyal swordsman who takes pride in his skills, unflinchingly seeking a challenger worthy of providing the duel that Greil could not. As a Branded, he ages slowly than most humans.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Mark Dias plays Zelgius when we see him in Path of Radiance. Here we see him more as the mysterious Black Knight who eludes and torments Ike. He effortlessly portrays the sociopathic demeanour Zelgius provides while killing Greil in one of the game's most memorable scenes, and the cold disappointment he feels regarding Greil's stature as an opponent.
Dave White gets to play him once his identity has been revealed. Though the voice on the surface might seem jarring coming from an unmasked Zelgius, it works excellently for him while he is in full armour. Although Radiant Dawn's voice direction was not always the most polished, you can see the heart of the right idea beneath it all. Both Dias and White's performances provide a cold level of isolation and alienation between Zelgius and those around him that lends his presence a bit of a chilling weight.
However, Robert Clotworthy's portrayal is the most well-rounded on all fronts, I feel. He manages to take the best aspects of Mark Dias's performance and weave them into an interpretation similar to what Dave White laid in a way that befits Zelgius while both masked and unmasked. There is a level of cruelty, bloodlust in a way that is foreboding, maintaining Zelgius's detachment from the messy trail he leaves in his wake. As far as a villain goes, it's a treat to hear him.

@Abdullab According to what Nightmare Crusher told me, he does the occasional video game at the Cup of Tea studio where the Fire Emblem games are dubbed. Tekken 5 was done at that same studio and Robert was in that game as well.

All three of these actors are pretty good and menacing in the role but overall I think Robert Clotworthy wins this one. Easily sounds like a horrifying enemy you wouldn’t want to mess with.

All of them actually did good IMO however I'm giving this to Robert Clotworthy. Not only does he have the advantage of better direction, I also enjoy how he makes Zelgius different than the Black Knight. He also does a great job making him sound like a force that is not to be trifled with and who wishes to get the job done even if it means going into a Tempest Trail map without a weapon just to look menacing.

This is a pretty fun voice compare, because IMO every voice here is pretty good

Mark Dias's performance (along with Greil's in the same scene) was easily the highlight of Path of Radiance's VA. I love how menacing his voice is, and his delivery of "Is that... all there is? No challenge? No... resistance?" gives me chills every time.

David Frederick White's voice isn't the most fitting, admittedly. But I LOVE how it sounds on it's own merits however, especially the "I trust you know who you face?" line.

And then we have Robert Clotworthy. Who really takes the best of both Mark Dias's and David White's performance, and sounding absolutely perfect in the role to boot. I love how he even kinda sounds a Disney villian.

All three of them are pretty great for sure. But I'll have to vote for Robert Clotworthy here though.

Looks at the picture that leads to the compare then sees all three game pics of this character, I think he was meant to sound young?

So with that in mind Mark Dias is much older sounding with an over the top tin can sound effect instead of a person.

Robert's decent but I think David White is a bit more distinct

@HienFan I don't think it's stated outright, but the implication in the games is that Zelgius/Black Knight is a lot older than he looks. He's part of a race of people who age differently.

Mark Dias is by no means bad, but there's too many effects on the voice, to where it makes him hard to understand.

Dave White is a step up in comparison to Mark, but I feel it's missing something.

Robert Clotworthy is perfect as Black Knight. He sounds threatening without being too overbearing. Plus it's nice to hear his voice in a Fire Emblem game. Vote goes to Robert.

It begins!

Mark Dias is pretty garbled by effects making it hard to judge him. From what I can tell his voice seems very airy and maybe even feminine which I don't think is the right call. The Black Knight is like an unstoppable force of nature, he should have a very commanding presence.

Dave White has the right sort of strong voice I think, but the acting sinks him. It's difficult to describe exactly. The best I can manage is that he, and plenty of other characters in that game, always sound slightly confused as to what their emotion in the scene should be.

This brings me to Robert Clotworthy who is the definite winner. While he make lack the exact deep commanding voice of Dave White he more than makes up for with his delivery. "The son of Gawain, Ike. He, now, is my prey" is a perfectly delivered line. You can just tell from that what the Black Knight is, an unstoppable juggernaut willing and able to crush anyone in his way.

@Nightmare Crusher

POR and Radiant Dawn struggle a lot with a sense of uncertainty in voice direction. In the same scene he's talking to Ranulf. The Japanese version makes it clear that Ranulf is being cocky, full of himself, and eager to get a fight going with the Black Knight, but in the English version he just sounds quiet. I'm pretty sure they had ADR too so I'm not sure what happened when most of Bad Animals' other work manages to sound more natural.

@NCZ Yep. I did rather like Ike's voice despite that though. There was something about it that just worked IMO.

@NCZ TBH a part of me is thankful for it since it gives me something to compare the Fates dub to when people claim it's bad.
