The Thing

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of The Thing with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Fantastic Four

The Thing is the superhero identity of Benjamin "Ben" Grimm. The Thing's super powers include super strength, durability, stamina and resistance to physical injury.

His superpowers were gained from exposure to the cosmic rays in space. He is the only member of the Fantastic Four to suffer a physical change to their appearance after being exposed to the cosmic rays.

The Thing has had some difficulty fitting in with the rest of the team and partly blames Reed Richards for his appearance. Like all other members of the Fantastic Four his identity is publicly known to the world.

Zach Hanks was trying to channel Paul Frees with his performance, according to the voice director.

@TheDayman Even though I hear more Pat Pinney in his voice, yeah, I can actually hear quite a lot of Paul's take in the delivery and the fun he's having. I honestly wish Zach gets another chance, 'cause he is on the right track, at least IMO, since Paul is my favorite Thing.

 10 Shout Outs!
1. Brian Dobson
Honetly, this is a landslide victory for Brian. His voice fits the character perfectly, the accent sounds great, het gets the personality down flawlessly and just overall sounds completely natural. He is the definitive voice of The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing.

2. Fred Tatasciore
Fred gets often typecast in these type of roles and for a good reason. He is the master when it comes to voicing deep sounding tough guys and he has the range to give the character actual charm too.

3. David Boat
David kinda has been all over the place when it comes to voicing this character. He doesn't sound all that good when he tries to do the really raspy voice (i.e. the voice he used in both SHSS and AA), but his big booming voice sounds great. In my opinion, to date his best turn as the character was in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

4. Michael Chiklis
Out of all of the major characters in Tim Story's F4 movies, Michael Chiklis was the only spot-on casting choice. Heck, he was probably the only spot-on casting choice out of all of the F4 movies period. Sure, the voice maybe didn't always sound the most natural, but he more than made up for it by perfectly capturing the personality of the character.

5. Gregg Berger
Gregg had great gravelly voice and gave the character to-the-point demeanor, without being too uptight or serious.

6. Chuck McCann
I admit right of the bat, I used to dislike Chuck, but grew to appreciate him after watching through the entire show (not something I would recommend). Like the 5 actors above him, he captured the fun-loving personality of the character, but additionally gave gravitas for the more serious moments. I also give him points for not going for the obvious booming or raspy voices, but doing something more different, but still fitting with the voice. However, he had a bad habit of mumbling a lot (which you can hear from the clip), which made it hard to understand what he was saying sometimes.

7. Scott McNeil
Scott was pretty natural choice for the role and he did good job. The voice is perhaps little bit too gruff, but not to a distracting degree.

8. Mark Gibbon
The voice is perhaps slightly atypical for the character, but I could see it working with the right material and direction. At the moments, Mark sound little bit too much like an imposing bad guy, so I would like to hear him reprise someday and finetune the performance little bit more.

9. Patrick Pinney
The voice is fine, but unmemorable and the acting is little stiff. Not awful by any means, but I'm not going to remember him later.

10. Ted Cassidy
The chainsmoker Thing! Well OK, I'm just exaggerating for the fun of it, but Ted honestly is really gruff and raspy, making him sound little unnatural. He still does OK job in terms of personality and his overall performance works in a campy sort of way, but doesn't stack up against people above him too well.

11. Joey Camen
Decent enough Chiklis impersonation, but he kinda sound more like a husky grandfather than the Thing.

12. Paul Frees
Pretty good by 60's voice acting standards, but the old radio show serial hero - vibe in his voice doesn't sound fitting for the character. Sure, to be fair, that kinda was the standard of superhero voice acting at the time, but it still feels unfitting. Plus, the way he delivers Thing's iconic catchphrase sounds really bad and forced.

13. Jamie Bell
Jamie was a complete miscast as Ben Grimm and especially as the Thing. His soft voice doesn't fit the character at all and post-production crews attemp at salvaging it with tons of modulation just falls flat. The material and direction isn't helping either.

I'll go with Brian Dobson for this one. He's absolutely perfect in the role. Gregg Berger, Fred Tatasciore, David Boat, Scott McNeil and Chuck McCann are also great.

I think Paul or Michael Dobson could also have worked as The Thing in F4: WGH.

Paul Frees: Frees is a great VA, but his Thing is too light and not gruff enough.

Ted Cassidy: An improvement over Frees. Probably the best performance of the 70's show.

Chuck McCann: A little light, but he still is gruff enough and has a great Brooklyn accent. Besides, love his delivery.

Patrick Pinney: Pinney is a little inconsistent. He sometimes sounds forced and besides he's a little high. Wouldn't mind if he reprised the role with better direction.

Michael Chiklis: He was a fine choice for the live-action F4, but here

"Hey Kiddies, do you know what time it is? IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME!"

It's The Thing.... What More Needs To Be Said..... Oh I Know....

Here are My Top 5 Favourite Voices for The Thing:

5. Michael Chiklis/Ted Cassidy/ David Boat
4. Scott McNeil
3. Chuck McCann/Fred Tatasciore
2. Gregg Berger
1. Brian Dobson

Future VA Suggestions:

I think Marc Diraison has the Potential to be a Fantastic Voice for The Thing, voicing him like a Brooklyn Accented Guts.

If he added a More Gravelly Tone and Brooklyn Accent to his Killowog voice, Henry Rollins would be a solid fit for Ben Grimm

I also Recommend Ross Marquand, Christopher Meloni, David Kaye and Robert Patrick.

Brian Dobson for me one the best casting on the show he brought the gruff and toughness of the Thing and a part that makes you feel for the guy

Second David boat sounded OK in the super hero squad but improve greatly in current marvel animated series

Greg berger third sounded pretty cool in the clip

Side note: John dimaggio, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Patrick Seitz would be cool as the Thing

However he was terribly miscast as The Thing.

I think he's now my least favourite.

I hope he can get a better new major role soon to make up for this.

VC thoughts update

Personally, I always felt Paul Frees worked best as the Thing. That high yet gruff and tough voice always felt like the ever-loving Thing in my eyes. He has a lot of fun in the role (especially when he says "It's Clobberin' Time!!!) but he also manages to play the more emotional moments quite well (like in the "Diablo" episode).

Chuck McCann is also quite boss in the role. His Jackie Gleason-esque take is quite great, and I love how he manages to sound a little bit high yet still adding some gruffness to his take.

Dave Boat is quite nice as the Thing. He may be a little bit deeper, but it doesn't bother me that much thanks to the gruff sound he adds to his voice.

Fred Tatasciore is also quite good. Like Boat, he sounds a little bit deep, but not to the point of sounding excessively deep.

Pat Pinney is also quite boss in the role. Just like Boat and Tatasciore, his voice is slightly deep, but not too much to bother me. As a side note, if he used his Mainframe voice with his Thing's aggressiveness and a Canadian accent, he would really nail Wolverine if he ever reprised the role.

I also enjoyed Brian Dobson, Gregg Berger, Joey Camen and Scott McNeil in the role.

Ted Cassidy was a perfect choice for the Thing, but he was horribly misdirected here. With better direction, I would have loved it, but as it stands, I really prefer his Galactus a lot more.

Michael Chiklis, Mark Gibbon and Jamie Bell just don't click with me.

Honorable mention: Gary Martin (BBC Spider-Man radio drama)

The Thing/Ben Grimm is without a doubt my favourite member of the F4. He comes off as the most likeable and sympathetic member of the team, maybe it's because despite his mutation he still keeps on trucking and moving forward, plus he's a cranky jerk with a heart of gold...I love characters like this.

Despite my issues with WGH Brian Dobson is my favourite, of the three Dobson brothers Brian is the one I'd expect the least to voice Ben, I would have expected him to voice Reed instead. He's usually the uptight kind of character in most shows but here him playing the grumpy big guy worked really well, his New Yorker accent sounds great and his voice is gravelly which just adds to the rocky looking design of his.

David Boat is a close second, he did well in The SHSS but man he's really improved a lot since then in the current cartoons, he's fantastic.

Gregg Berger is third, he has a great gruff and gravelly voice and he needs to reprise again.

Michael Chiklis was perfect as Ben in the live action F4 movies, like seriously perfect. He really understood the character and just fits him to a tee. He even translates well into voice acting too. Overall he's the best casting in the entire movie.

Ted Cassidy is a surprisingly great fit for The Thing too, he has such a deep, gravelly voice and his acting holds up well too....too bad this was in the crappy F4 cartoon from the 70's....probably the standout voice of that show.

Joey Camen fits Ben really well.

Fred Tatasciore is a natural fit for Ben but of all the people here's he's by far the most typecast here. I love Fred but it gets tiresome of him always being the big deep voiced guy. He still voices him well though.

Chuck McCann is a bit light sounding but he still fits Ben really well.

Paul Frees sounds way too light, I get why some people might like it but for me Ben's gotta have a gruff gravelly voice. It sounds out of place with his design.

Mark Gibbon sounds deep but lacks the gravel needed for the role.

Overall I'm voting for Brian Dobson.

BONUS: I can so see The Thing being voiced by Clancy Brown, Kevin Michael Richardson, John DiMaggio, Patrick Seitz, Phil LaMarr, Christopher Sabat and/or Andrew Love. Hooray for deep voiced type casting!
said at 4:49 AM on Tue Feb 2 2016
Hey Scott McNeil's The Thing is really friggin good. He's got the voice and attitude down nicely, He's almost as great as Brian Dobson.

I still prefer Brian but if Scott voiced him again I'd be OK with that.
said at 7:41 AM on Thu Feb 4 2016
@Autovolt - No offense but I can't help but point out the irony in something you stated. You talk about how Fred Tatasciorce is being typecast as big deep voiced men, then you mention Kevin Michael Richardson (who's also guilty of being typecast in the same type of role) as a good candidate for Thing.
said at 5:05 AM on Sun Jun 19 2016
@HyperVoiceActing Yeah I didn't word myself very well looking back. -_-

I guess what I mean is that Fred has voiced like nearly every big guy in the Marvel Universe (between voicing Hulk, Beast, Juggernaut, Cable, Blockbuster, Thunderball..etc....etc) and I really don't think Hulk and Thing should have the same VA or similar voices.

again that's just me.

Paul Frees- Not bad but a bit too light but was decent enough to work.

Ted Cassidy- Maybe a bit too gruff, it doesn't really sound forced but it does come off as unnaturally guff. Although if he had lighten it he would have been pretty good.

Chuck McCann- His voice is a tad bit high but he was gruff enough and had a pretty good New York accent.

Michael Chiklis- He was better in the movies but I think he gave a decently deep and gruff voice. The major problem is his performance feels a bit phoned in, though I think that would be the game's creators fault and not Michael. Maybe if he got another got another chance he could have done better.

Gregg Berger- Very good, he was deep and gruff enough and his accent was done alright even if it was a little lighter then some of the others. Also to me he seems like a mix of Clancy Brown and Chiklis.

Joey Camen- He was alright, he sounded more like Kevin Michael Richardson more than Chiklis. My main problem is he doesn't sound like he's putting much energy into his performance, not that he sounds bored but he seems pretty low key for the character.

Patrick Pinney- Patrick did...alright, he did seem to be inconstant with how gruff he was and he came off as forced in some ways and a little too high.

Brian Dobson- He was perfect, he had the right amount of gruffness and was deep enough and had a great New York accent. Another good example of Brian and the show.

David Boat- For a while whenever I heard Boat there was something that didn't click with me no matter where I heard him. At first I thought he was because he sounded forced but relistening that wasn't it. Then I realized it that he always sounded he was yelling or he's grumpy, I can't picture David having Thing whisper or just talk normally. I get Thing isn't jolly but I can't see showing much range.

Fred Tatasciore- I may be the only person to think this but I thought Fred did better here than EMH. In EMH, he was pretty inconstant and wasn't gruff or deep enough at times. Here, he's got a good mix of both even if he could have been a tad deeper.

Unknown- It is deep and gruff but he doesn't seem to have any energy for the role.

My wish list for Thing is Kevin Michael Richardson, if he reused his Kilowog voice with a New York accent I think he'd be perfect. Another choice, this may sound weird, Peter Cullen would work. Look at some of his eailer work, he can do a New York accented deep and gruff voice.

This is one of those VCs where I feel that every VA did great in the role.

I'm gonna' be the odd man out here and say that my #1 choice is Dave Boat. I wasn't a fan of his at first, but listening to him in USM/AA/SMASH and other recent attempts, I think he nails the character. He's got the accent, he's got the deep and gruff voice, and in the case of USM and AA, they add an extra little bit of modification to make him sound more monstrous-y.

Chuck McCann, Fred Tatasciore and Paul Dobson are hot on Dave's heels for second place. Chuck's got a loveable quality to his performance, Fred (moreso in EMH than the MUA2 clip we have here) obviously does great in the role and Paul is equally awesome. No question about that.

Paul Frees, Ted Cassidy and Gregg Berger are tied in third place. Very good voices and performances.

Patrick Pinney, Joey Camen and the UVA (who I think might be Mark Acheson) are tied for fourth. They're all right, nothing special. Joey does a decent Thing voice, though I think he was a poor replacement for Chiklis.

Michael Chiklis is in last place for me. :( Not by any means "bad", just the weakest of the bunch. Now, I LOVED him as a live-action Ben/Thing. Personally, Chiklis as Ben/Thing is right up there with RDJ as Tony/Iron Man and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in terms of perfect live-action casting. Chiklis had the enthusiasm for the role, the voice, the mannerisms. He was just perfect. And I think that given different material or another opportunity to voice the character, he could knock it out of the park.

My second favorite would be Dave Boat and Greg Berger, both give the Thing a suitibly deep and gravelly voice that again feel very natural with the character

Fred Tatasciore,i know typecast,he is a lot better in Earths mightiest heroes, and while not as good as the 3 above he still did a decent job in my opinion

Chuck McCanns take still sound pretty solid to me even though its from the 90s,Patrick Pinney on the other hand jus doesnt work for me,i dont think he sounds forced but the voice just doesnt fit

David needs a clip from Ultimate Spiderman or a longer lasting one from Super Hero Squad.

I prefer Michael in live action rather than the game though Joey was a good voice double in the 2nd game.

Chuck was not bad a bit too soft to me.

Ted & Patrick were both gruff in a bad way while Paul (despite being the original) was a miscast in my opinion.

I'm going with Brian Dobson, although David Boat isn't bad. I do like Fred's voice work but I'm sorry, this role was just too bad of a typecast for me to get over.

I'm fairly certain Mark Acheson voiced the Thing in Rise of the Imperfects considering his name's in the credits. Just to be sure, I might have to get more clips of him.

@CatsTuxedo You know...I kinda hear it

@Music Meister Actually, after listening to more of Acheson's work and spotting Mark Gibbon's name in the credits, I'm thinking Gibbon is the UVA since that voice sounds closer to his Grey Hulk.

@CatsTuxedo Ironically I misread your first post as Mark Gibbon instead of Acheson. I even went to the Grey Hulk compare and thought "I totally hear it now"

Agree with the polls. Dobson is the best Thing, followed by Fred Tatasciore and Michael Chiklis. Dave Boat, Patrick Pinney, and Greg Berger are also great, even though the latter makes me think of his Jecht from FFX.

As for the rest...yeesh. Paul Frees didn't have the right sound, Ted Cassidy sounds like a pirate, Chuck McCann and Joey Camen were ALL WRONG, and the Unknown Voice Actor can't act.

I'm voting for Brian Dobson. He really brings the character to life and fits his personality so well.

However both David Boat and Fred Tatasciorce are tied for a close second. They both did excellent jobs as well.

Also I thought Michael Chiklis was excellent in the films but for some reason in the game they have him a weird reverb

Definitely Brian Dobson.

 7 Shout Outs!
Paul Frees - Really good for a pre-90's voice over.
Ted Cassidy - Really good too.
Chuck McCann - The Thing I heard as a kid. Still not too shabby.
Michael Chiklis - Like his movie performance, good.
Gregg Berger - Would like to hear more from him.
Joey Camen - Really good too.
Patrick Pinny - Good.
Brian Dobson - Probably the best.
Dave Boat - That show really let Dave show off his range. Good job.
Fred Tatasciore - He is always awesome.
Unknown Voice Actor - This is how I think John DiMaggio would sound like as Thing.

I'm surprised to say I don't think any of them are bad. I think Clancy Brown can do Thing using his voice as Rhino.

Fred Tatasciore is my pick for the Thing. I prefer his voice in Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes to his voice in Ultimate Alliance 2. Brian Dobson, Dave Boat and Chuck McCann are pretty good too.

Brian was just epic.

My top picks for Ben are Michael Chiklis, Chuck McCann, David Boat, Fred Tatasciore, Gregg Berger, and Brian Dobson for sure. =)

Even though Fred Tatasciore's the typical go-to guy for big guys, I'm actually gonna give it to Brian Dobson.

1. Gregg Berger
2. Brian Dobson
3. Fred Tatasciore
4. Patrick Pinney
5. David Boat

@Spider-Fox Wait, why would Scott McNeil always be The Thing for you???
said at 4:43 PM on Tue Dec 11 2012
@TylerMirage I just think he'd be good for the role.

@TylerMirage I heard roles from him that would back up that statement.

@Spider-Fox Seconded. Nice to know I'm not alone on. I think Rex in Extreme Dinosaurs was what got me started on that.

@Spider-Fox I agree that he'd be good for the role. I was just confused that you thought that Scott would "always be The Thing" for you, considering he's never actually been The Thing, ha ha. ;)

Giving this to Fred Tatasciore for Ben, though Brian Dobson, Gregg Berger, Michael Chiklis, Chuck McCann, and David Boat were good, too.

 2 Shout Outs!
Man, this is a tough one. They all do a great job; all have their own spin on this iconic character and they do so well! :) Interesting to note that Fred's version of The Thing on A: EMH is different than his Thing-voice for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.

Also, it's a shame that the video game sound quality distorts Michael Chiklis' voice so much. It sounds fantastic (HAR!) in the movies, but this audio clip does not do it justice. :(

My top three:

1.) Brian Dobson
2.) Fred Tatasciore (from A: EMH, not Ultimate Alliance 2)
3.) Ted Cassidy

I think Dobson does the gravel and deep voice very well without sounding forced and having what seems like a new york accent.

If I had to choose out of all of them, I'd take Brian Dobson with a close second to Gregg Berger.
