Mr. Fantastic

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mr. Fantastic with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Fantastic Four

Mr. Fantastic is the superhero identity of Reed Richards. He is the leader of the Fantastic Four, husband of Susan Storm / Invisible Woman, and brother-in-law of Johnny Storm / Human Torch.

Mr. Fantastic is one of the smartest beings on Earth and his super power is elasticity; which allows his body to stretch and form into almost any shape he wants (usually for offensive or defensive situations).

His superpower was gained from exposure to the cosmic rays in space. Like all other members of the Fantastic Four his identity is publicly known to the world.

1. Beau Weaver
I'm actually little suprised that I'm giving Beau the first place, since I can't recall any moment from him where he really stood out and made me think "that's some brilliant acting right there" or anything like that. I think that it comes down to him having the best "batting average." His voice fits the character perfectly and he captured the "absent minded scientist" - side of the character. But, most importantly, he also sounded convincing outside of the comfort of Reed's lab and made believable superhero. Some of the actors pulled off one or two of those things, but Beau was solid in all three.

2. Hiro Kanagawa
Hiro's voice is little bit younger than I would personally imagine for the character, but he captured the personality perfectly. He can talk confusing technobabble and still sound like he 100% knows what he is talking about. Plus, he had some wonderful comedic moments, without breaking the character ("It's a metaphasic dimensional adjuster! Everyone knows that!").

3. David Naughton
David maybe sounds just tiny bit too old (by no means too much or anything like that, but just enough to stick out little bit), but gives Mr. Fantastic very fitting wise voice and pacifistic personality. Plus, I like the slight "dad - vibe" from his voice, which I find fitting for the character.

4. Wally Wingert
Wally definitely is recycling his Hank Pym - voice, but to his credit he is playing the two characters differently. His Reed Richard has much more commanding tone, which fits leader of a team, and is more sure of himself than Wingert's Hank was. Plus, the voice is slightly deeper here, so it isn't a complete copy of his previous performance.

5. Robin Atkin Downes
Robin shows great deal of potential by having very fitting voice for the role and getting the personality down pretty well even with limited material. He really should get to reprise the role someday to truly shine.

6. Dee Bradley Baker
Dee captures both the intellectual and "sucked into his own work" aspects of the character, but he is kinda doing his typical scientist - voice, which fits the role fine, but doesn't standout all that much.

7. Robert Clotworthy
Great scientist - voice, but I'm not sure it completely fits a superhero. I mean, I know that Reed Richards isn't a traditional superhero and he arguably is more a scientist (I wouldn't expect him to sound like Superman or anything like that), but it would be hard for me to imagine a guy with Robert's voice rushing into action or leading a team of superheroes.

8. Cam Clarke
Cam shows potential and I could see him being great, if he had bigger role and more time to finetune his performance little bit.

9. James Marsters
This is really cool against type casting for James and I really want to love it, but there's something little off about him. I can't put my finger on it, but his performance is missing some kind of "extra oomph."

10. Brian Drummond
I think Music Meister put it best. Brian works for what the role requires from him, but I don't see him (or at least this particular take from him) working if he had more substantial role.

11. Matthew Kaminsky
Pretty decent Ioan Gruffudd impersonation and has more energy than Ioan had in his video game appearence. I could see Matthew doing even better, if he got to do his own take on the character.

12. Ioan Gruffudd
Ioan made adequate Reed Richards in the movies and I feel he could have been actually pretty good with better writing and direction. He is more monotone in the game than he was in the movies and I don't think his performance translates too well to a voice-over role.

13. Gerald Mohr
The bombastic nature of his performance is kinda entertaining and he isn't going too over-the-top (by 60's standards), but the slightly nasally voice isn't personally doing it for me.

14. Mike Road
Mike's voice has certain charming "B-movie scientist" - vibe to it, which of course wasn't intentional and just me looking at his performance through modern day's lenses, since scientist characters usually were played like that back then. Other than that, he is kinda monotone and nothing too special.

15. Charlie Adler
I think most people can agree that Super Hero Squad Online overused Charlie (and Tara Strong) too much and in my opinion this is one of the best examples of that. Charlie's voice and performance are really generic, and I think he would probably be miscast for this role even under better circumstances.

VC thoughts update

I really like Gerald Mohr quite a lot as Mr. Fantastic. Gerald is one of my favorite radio actors and in this role, he's just great. He does sound pretty heroic, yet I like how he adds a more intellectual sound to his delivery. His Bogart-esque voice is always a treat to listen to and honestly, this is how I imagine Mr. Fantastic to sound like in the comics.

Beau Weaver is also look. He mixes the heroic leader and scientific genius traits really well and his delivery is solid. Along with Chuck McCann as the Thing, this was one of the better casting choices of the 90's Fantastic Four cartoon.

Wally Wingert is also pretty good. He hits the same notes as Gerald and Beau.

Dee Bradley Baker's voice is a bit too high for my taste, but his performance is really excellent.

Cam Clarke also works rather well in the role, though I do feel he could have made him a little bit more geekier. He does nail the heroic leader aspect, though.

I also enjoyed David Naughton, Matthew Kaminsky, Robert Clotworthy, Charlie Adler, Robin Atkin Downes and Brian Drummond in the role.

Mike Road... he could have worked perfectly in the role, but thanks to the direction, his performance is pretty flat most of the time and it really doesn't hold up to this day at all, which is a big shame.

Ioan Gruffudd, Hiro Kanagawa and James Marsters just don't work for me.

"I've encountered the most amazing things in many a universe. Wonders that people could never imagine in their wildest dreams. But for someone like you to love me never fails to astound me, Susan."

It's rage inducing for me when Mr Fantastic is poorly written since he is on of the few prominent Autistic characters in comics. Civil War and Ultimate FF absolutely disgust me as both a fan of Mr Fantastic and as a person with Asperger Syndrome....

Anyway, putting aside that rant, here are my Top 5 Favourite Mr Fantastic voices:

5. Mike Road/ Matthew Kaminsky
4. Dee Bradley Baker
3. Robert Clotworthy/David Naughton
2. Hiro Kanagawa
1. Beau Weaver

Future VA Suggestions:

I would be interested in hearing Brandon Keener voicing Mr Fantastic, since a more intellectual and paternal version of his Garrus Vakarian voice could work quite nicely IMO.

I also Think Thomas Gibson would be really good as Reed Richards, using a more affable version of his Deathstroke voice.

I also recommend Michael Trucco, Robert McCollum, Doug Erholtz and Alan Tudyk.

1. Hiro Kanagawa like his performance in F4 world greatest Heroes

2. Robert Clockworty had a wise sounding intelligence in Marvel ultimate alliance

3. Beau weaver for his performance in the 90s series really setting what the character is

4. Dee Bradley Baker remember hearing in Avengers EMH and like it was pretty good

I think my favourite voice for Mr. Fantastic is Beau Weaver. I feel he strikes a great balance between the old deep voice Reed Richards but also sounds young enough for the modern version too.

Robin Atkin Downes is actually a really close second actually, his voice is a great fit for Reed, he just needs more time with the role for him to maybe perfect it.

Gerald Mohr has a really good and fitting voice but personally I think he's a bit too deep.

Cam Clarke fits Reed pretty well too.

Hiro Kanagawa is also good as Reed but I find him maybe a bit too deep and dry in the role at times.

Robert Clotworthy and David Naughton both pull off the very smart and analytical scientist and genius really well.

Mike Road isn't too bad either, he sorta sounds like a deeper Don Adams.

Wally Wingert has a great voice, great pitch and delivery but unfortunately I associate his voice with Hank Pym more.

James Marsters has a nice pitch of voice but I think there's something missing with his take.

Brian Drummond works for the story he's in but I can't see him lasting as the traditional Reed much longer.

Dee Bradley Baker is fine but sounds way too light and young for Reed, he was far more superior as Dr. Connors.

Ioan Gruffudd was OK in the movie but I don't think his voice translate well as a voice for Reed.

Matthew Kaminsky despite trying to emulate Ioan actually sounds a lot better in the role.

Charlie Adler is definitely the least fitting voice here.

I'm going with Beau Weaver at least for now, unless someone new or RAD has another shot.

BONUS: So many actors i could see pulling off Reed including David Kaye, Daran Norris, Townsend Coleman, Brian Dobson, Troy Baker and Matthew Mercer.
said at 7:09 AM on Fri Feb 10 2017
@Autovolt - I think Hiro's dryness can work in certain instances, but I agree he could use more pep.

Also Kaye would make an awesome Reed

Wally Wingert, Dee Bradley Baker & Robin Atkin Downes are pretty solid voices for Mr Fantastic. Not big on Hiro's take. Something about Hiro sounds really off in that clip. Gerald Mohr & Mike Road were OK for the time, but don't hold up as well now. Beau, Cam, Ioan, David are pretty good. James & Charlie were decent and worked for their respective show & game that they were in. Robert Clothworthy is the worst imo. Doesn't really fit.

As for who my vote will go for, currently it's going to Dee.

I'm a little dumbfounded that Hiro has majority. And I wonder how much of it because he just happen to be the voice of Mr. Fantastic in the longest running F4 voice. There's just something really odd with the way he talks, the sound and speech pattern.

@Soldierkei He doesn't have majority, he has the most votes. 44/127 = 35%. 65% of votes are for people other than him. In any case, we all have our own opinions and I think it's silly to take numbers so seriously. VCs are supposed to be for fun, not a battle for votes.
said at 9:54 AM on Thu Oct 29 2015
@Soldierkei - Personally speaking I find Hiro a bit of a mixed bag. There are times where he does sound off, like you mentioned. But when he works, I actually find Hiro incredibly endearing. He certain has the intellectual and "sucked into his own work" aspects of the character down pat. And he can be pretty funny ("YEAH! TAKE THAT MAGIC!") I guess in this case it's a matter of inconsistent voice direction.

I have mix feelings about Gerald, Mike and Beau. On one hand, they sound smart and like a leader and make techno babel sound believable enough. However their voices are too "big chin hero" like, not too muh that I'm not talking Brian Bloom as Cap bad but they just don't do the nerdy side at all. Again not bad but a mix bag.

Cam, Ioan, David, Mathew, and Robert were also good but something in their performances just Not bad but I think their voices fit well enough but their acting sounds too stiff at times. I think each of them deserve a second chance a the role.

Hiro, James, and Robin are my favorites. I can understand why some might not like Hiro as he did have a line that could sound odd but he had more good than bad moments, he was nerdy and smart but sounded like he could lead without sounding too much like a typical hero plus he could be pretty funny when he needed to be. James was smart and I liked his optimistic version of Reed, he was also able to be funny and had a leader quality without losing the nerdy aspect though he didn't play the nerdy side as much as I would like. Robin had potential and I could see it turning out very well if he reprised.

I gotta say, I find Dee to be a complete miscast. His voice is too high and too recognizable which makes it more distracting. He plays Reed a bit TOO nerdy and likes any of the other qualities even sounding a bit stuff at times. Overall, just a miscast.

@Mr.Fennoy93 I disagree on both counts. Reed's supposed to be a smart guy. Dee Bradley Baker made him sound like that. Not to mention, I never liked Cam Clarke's Reed, Something felt off, plus quite a bit of the voice acting in the 90s Spider-Man show doesn't hlod up well today, anyway, Cam Clark'es Reed being one of them.
