Black Shadow

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Black Shadow with sound clips and images.
Franchise: F-Zero

One of the most wanted criminals in the galaxy, Black Shadow is a sociopath who thrives on chaos. Utterly despising Captain Falcon with a passion, Black Shadow wants nothing more than to see him go down in flames before the whole world's eyes - whether on the racetrack, or off it. The only person who comes close to striking fear into his eyes is the elusive Deathborn.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Kinda like Samurai Goroh, this really illustrates the tonal difference between GX and the anime. Whereas GX is much campier and over-the-top, having fun with its cast of admittedly-goofy characters, GP Legend tends to take things more seriously. Jack Merluzzi's take is more comical and plays him as more of an evil rival superhero who delights in his own awfulness, while Eric Stuart plays him as, well, blacker and shadowier. Personally I prefer Jack since his take infuses a really great presence and really embodies the role, just as Black Shadow is embodying his role. My main beef with Eric isn't really the darker take itself, which is totally fine, but more just that it sounds more put-on in comparison.

My favorite of the two is Eric, sounds threatening.

Albeit Jack Merluzzi's my favorite performance in overall GX game.

I prefer Eric's deeper huskier voice

Jack err... I think this should have been a time he used his Raven or Zero voice but apparently not

Jack's got an okay voice, but his delivery I think is really bad. It sounds really flat and disinterested, and at times it just comes off as funny. I feel his Zero voice would've worked a little better since it was deeper, and I kind of feel like Black Shadow should have a deeper voice and I think he sounds too light, and average to really be a villain.

Eric's acting is much better then Jack's, but again, I think he is a little light. He sounds more evil and deep compared to Jack, but I do think at times his acting, while better, can sound very stilted and awkward.

Really neither of these two are what I would call good, but I'd say if I could pick I'd pick Eric.

1. Eric Stuart
This is definitely a role I didn't expect from him. Eric has played villains on occasion, but they were either too minor (Professor Sebastian from Pokemon is one) or comic relief (James). Hearing him play a serious, dark villain is a surprise and shows how wide his vocal range really is.

2. Jack Merluzzi
He's...okay. I like his evil laugh, but other than that he doesn't click with me for some reason.

I like Jack's acting more in terms of how much energy he has behind his performance, but I like Eric's deeper and raspier voice more...pretty tough comparison since each one has a strength the other lacks (Jack having more natural and less stiff acting, with Eric having a less plain & more fitting voice).

So yeah, tie it is for me, for now: I'll listen to more of their respective performances as Black Shadow, before I decide on one here.

A Character Voiced by Eric Stuart who hates a "Wheeler"..... hmmmmmm..... .....

Perhaps they should resolve their differences by playing a card game on Motorcycles......?

Anyway, tough call for me, but I'm leaning towards Eric Stuart getting my vote.

It's actually a pretty tough call here. As they both fit Black Shadow rather well for their respective material.

I'll vote for Eric since I like his darker take on the character slightly more, but it's pretty close IMO.

If you take away the horns, he looks like Space Ghost.

Neither one's doing it for me, really. Jack has the right attitude and delivery, but the voice just does not fit. He sounds so normal. Eric's voice fits the character, but his acting is too stiff and awkward.

Guess I'll vote for Jack, but this just isn't a great showing from either of them.

I like Jack's acting, but the voice is far too...normal.

Eric's got a creepy raspy voice that fits this guy, and he's playing him more serious, which while maybe not as hammy as Jack, is still very effective.

Voting for Eric Stuart. One of his better villain voices and a pretty underrated role from him IMO.

I was both dreading and looking forward to this comparison because I wanted to hear them both...unfortunately it's just as I feared...I like both actors and don't know who to vote for...aaaaaaaaaaaa...

I do really like how Jack's laughter reminds me of Master Albert as well as how smug he sounds, not to mention the energy he brings to the role, but while Eric's a lot slower paced I also really like how deep and raspy he sounds.

Fffffff I'll decide later. Calling it a tie on my end for now.
