Well folks while the little bald dude Krillin is one of the earlier VCs for this site let alone this VC section so this VC shall be for his Kid self. In the 1989 dub of Dragon Ball from Harmony Gold he was renamed Bongo (a slightly crude joke about how his head can be used for a drum). The reception of the voices for this dub ranged from pretty good to lets just say "not-so good" and I would have to say that Kid Krillin is somewhere in the middle in this case. While Krillin's VA in this dub tried perhaps a little too hard on the voice to be fair the performance was actually not that bad as it did fairly suit Krillin's persona pretty well back then.

Krillin's kid self didn't get a chance to have an English voice again until a bit over a decade later in the early 2000s in FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball series with Laurie Steele doing the voicework. And Laurie's work as Kid Krillin is probably her most renowned performance IIRC and I can definitely see why. She was definitely able to do a little boy voice and I liked her nasally tone for the role and she had a great performance for the role as well. Whether it was when Krillin was a little smart-alack punk or when Krillin matures and becomes a nice boy Laurie's overall performance was a great one and is easily one of the better performances in the FUNi dub of the show.

And not too long after the FUNi dub of the show there is the Blue Water dub in which Mike "Time Man" Thiessen took over the role. And I must say this performance is kind of a mixed bag, one hand Krillin is still just a little boy at the time and well to be blunt Mike is a bit too old to be sounding like a young boy. Granted not ALL grown men have this problem (as Greg Ayres is perhaps the most known example) but while Mike made a good effort in trying but he is not one of those men whom can do a little boy voice. However other than that detail his performance was pretty good though as his performance did fairly suit the role. So basically I am deeming Mike Thiessen as Kid Krillin to be a miscast (though to be fair he does have decent potential for older Krillin though). Overall I am definitely going with Laurie Steele first, his Harmony Gold dub voice at second and Mike Thiessen at an okay but miscast third.

(Note: Apparently there was a France dub of one of the Dragonball movies and I was pleasantly surprised by it, apparently even from what little I've seen their work on Dragon Ball has better voice acting than what they do on DBZ. But while I am still going with Laurie Steele the most I am pleasantly surprised with Sharon Mann here.)

Steele's is the best, IMO.

I think I'll go with Mike Thiessen. I'm not fond of Laurie Steele's version.

While none of them are particularly outstanding or anything, Laurie Steele sounds the most fitting to me, though I will say she does sound forced and a bit throaty at times.

Mike Thiessen's performance is the most naturally acted, but he sounds nothing like a boy, so I really can't vote for him on virtue of the fact that's not a kid's voice.

Wanda Nowicki is too effeminate and flat.

Sharon Mann couldn't be more annoying, really, effeminate and nasally at the same time, on top of rushed delivery to boot. AB Groupe dub voice acting is funny stuff, though.

I wish Sonny Strait would've voiced Young Krillin.

They're all kind of bad. I suppose I find Mike Thiessen the most listenable since he's not forcing his voice. Mind you it's not a fitting voice, it's just the most natural.

@munsonx4 I don't know how often they update these Dragonball comparisons, but they have a forum where you can post the links there. They'll most likely get to it quicker as well.

During the later sagas of DBZ Ocean Dub, in the flashbacks with Kid Goku and Kid Young Krillin Training. Terry Klassen did the voice of Young Krillin.

To be honest, I don't really like any of them. Not even Laurie Steele. As others have put, it can be said that she sounds the most fitting because she sounds the most like Sonny Strait's Krillin as a child, but in my opinion her voice sounds horribly forced and an overwhelming amount of the time her acting suffers because of it. I'm sorry, but I have watched over 100 episodes of the series and it still sounds awful to me. It's way too throaty and nasally and I just can't get into it.

As for my vote, I'm actually going with the Unknown Voice Actor from Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle. It's not much, but I the part from "I could be a gold medal winning swimmer!" sounded very natural, boyish, and it's perfect for the cocky, silly attitude Krillin had back then. Granted, in the first half of the clip the voice sounds too nasally and feminine, but the second half is close to my ideal Young Krillin voice.

The first UVA isn't very good at all, and Mike Thiessen's voice is actually pretty good as adult Krillin, but not so much with Young Krillin.

1. Laurie Steel - Sounds the most fitting for the character. And like Damolisher says, sounds like how Sony's Krillin would sound before he hit puberty.
2. UVA (Harmony dub) - Very good fit. Sounds kind of like Billy West's Doug Funnie voice.
3. Mike Thiessen - Yeah, that's a grown man trying to sound like a young boy.
4. UVA (Movie) - The voice is really good, but I am way too put off by the acting there. It's a typical bad anime dub performance.

Laurie Steel's is great! She actually sounds like how Sonny's Krillin SHOULD sound before puberty.

I actually think Mike's voice Is age appropriate, seeing as Krillin is meant to be 13-16, Goku being 12-15. But if you think about it, Krillin isn't much taller as an adult so I don't think he looks THAT young for his age...
