Sonny Strait (duh)! He's always had the right amount of goofiness and innocence, and is a great actor too. He's beyond perfect! Terry isn't bad, but always kind of got on my nerves a bit. Dan's even worse, and Mike sounds too "cool." Also, as weird as Sharon sounds, it does at least sound like she was having some fun, and that clip is freaking hilarious! LOL

1. Sonny Strait is the best here. While it started off as a Klassen impression, eventually he developed his own signature voice over time. Like most of the other FUNimation cast members of Z, he's gotten nuch better over time.

2.Mike Thiessen is pretty solid as Krillin as well. One of the better performances from Blue Water's DB dub.

3.Klassen sounds rather nasally, but his Krillin voice is pretty good. The only problem, he doesn't pull off the serious moments quite as good as Sonny does.

4. Dan Gascon sounds too goofy and awkward. Not only that, but it was the inspiration for Lanipator's Krillin in the abridged version

5. Sharon Mann. I'm guessing casting a woman for Krillin was inspired by the Japanese version. Too bad it doesn't have the same charm as Tanaka. It sounds obnoxious & OTT.

And there's the Malaysian voice I heard somewhere, she's pretty flat but I will place her in between Mike and Dan because Dan and Sharon are just annoying to listen to

@HienFan Not forgetting Apollo Abrahams in the Philippine dub, but I haven't heard enough of him to form an opinion.

@Kioea I don't live in the Philippine to notice that dub too much while I at least live in Malaysia to actually consider looking out on it

Sonny Strait is more or less how I imagine the character would sound- he has the down on his luck and goofy tone for the character down pretty well, as well as working for the more serious moments, too.

Mike Thiessen sounds pretty good as well, though a little awkward in his delivery.

Terry Klassen isn't bad at all, and he did capture the kind and goofy sides of the character, but I feel he did struggle when it came to more serious moments, though he's pretty decent.

Dan Gascon just sounds goofy and doesn't fit much at all- now that's a voice I can't imagine being able to stomach for Krillin.

Sharon Mann is extraordinarily obnoxious and forced.

I thought that Sonny Strait sounded awkward at first as Krillin, but he did improve as the series went on. I'll give him my vote for that.

I do like Terry, and I remember him being good in the first three movies and early parts of the series.

@Kioea Just for a laugh, here's Sonny Strait prank calling Terry Klassen in character. I should mention, though, this is more a dig at the writing than the performance.

Sonny Strait really seems to get the character and clearly has a lot of fun with the part these days. He brings the right balance of snarky attitude, genuine emotion and Krillin's down on his luck nature. He really shine swith aome of Krillin's more mellow stuff towards the end too.

Mike didn't have a whole lot to do as older Krillin, but he really did have a good voice for it. Can't complain.

Dan isnkind of funny although he really doesn't fit that well. He seems to be forcing himself to sound older when it really isn't that neccesary.

I can't stand Terry's Krillen. He's way too wimpy and whiny sounding. It feels like he doesn't have the rest of Krillin's personality down and is just annoying.

The unknown's take on "Clearin" manages to be a million times worse. Even outside of that song she's way too obnoxious and screetchy sounding most of the time. If they were trying to match Mayumi Tanaka then they failed miserably.

I see a lot of the same people have made reposts swearing by Sonny Strait. I grew up with the Ocean dub back when Toonami was leading the air time '97 '98. A lot of younger guys I've noticed swear by the FUNi actors, or those DBZ fans who began getting into DBZ while it began to gain popularity for the first time.

IMO, those who say that Terry Klaisen sounded too nasally are pretty much copying other opinions. Just like the Ocean Group, FUNi recycle their finest voice actors for other animes. And some of their finest from DBZ sound similar to their DBZ characters. You could tell when you hear similar voices in different shows.

Terry Klaisen (et al) was also a voice actor in the original Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. He sounds the same, except in Dragonball Z there's more emotion, including a cheery or cowardly, depending, demeanor underneath the tones. So, I honestly don't see where this "nasally whine" is at. They sound similar if anything, especially when FUNi started. They were ordered to sound like the Ocean actors at first, so they really used other voice acting styles and slowly developed it as their own.

@Repentance I feel your pain, my friend, I really do. I personally feel Terry was superb in the first two seasons, plus most of the Android Saga. However, after watching the Buu Saga Ocean episodes, I'm going to have to go with Sonny. Terry's performance really went downhill in that arc.

@Kioea Sonny could sound rather whiny himself though both are way ahead of... everyone else

@Repentance "IMO, those who say that Terry Klaisen sounded too nasally are pretty much copying other opinions"

Or maybe that just how most people feel about Klassen's Krillin as a whole?

"They sound similar if anything, especially when FUNi started.

Yes, when they started, they sounded very similar. But Sonny's sound clip here doesn't sound like a Klassen impersonation, it sounds more like a standalone voice to me.

#1) Don "Sonny" Strait- Like pretty much all of the FUNimation Cast when they started out (excluding Stephanie as Kid Gohan and Chris as Zarbon), he sucked badly when he took over the role initially. However, he improved dramatically as the Frieza Saga progressed, and that continued until in Kai's dub, he has established himself as the quintessential English Krillin/Kuririn, managing to capture the serious side, comedic side, and well mannered, polite, down on his luck character Krillin is. 9/10
#2) Mike Thiessen- He's good, but not great: I like him more as Krillin than as his Kid Krillin, though-- nice pitch and he delivers his lines fairly well. 8/10
#3) Terry Klassen- Okay, but too goober and wimpy sounding...not bad, but he exaggerates the weaker side of the character too much. Nice pitch of voice, though, but his delivery of lines/overacting was really awkward at times (e.g "Uhhh...thePOWER? Yes! It issss I who now possesses the POWEEEERRRRR!") 7/10
#4) Dan Gascon- Way, way, too wimpy sounding, and pretty much what Lanipator/Nick Landis based his interpretation of the character on in TFS. Too weak sounding, too gooberish, and just falls flat. 4.5/10
#5) UVA- Awful beyond belief...no words needed to describe this horror. 1/10

1. Sonny Strait - He IS Krillin, no contest.
2. Mike Thiessen - Sounds like a good young Krillin.
3. Terry Klassen - Average at most. The voice is too nasally and wimpy sounding, and Klassen overacted the part to no end.
4. Dan Gascon - So that's where DBZ Abridged got their Krillin voice from! It's fun to listen to just for that.

@Galactic_Cyrus Unlike Dan Gascon, in my opinion Lanipator is actually GOOD. Extremely high pitched and goofy but oddly lovable.

Sonny. Terry Klassen was quite good, but Sonny has really nailed the part. Still, Terry was always a bit "goober" sounding to me and down on his luck, but he made Krillin too wimpy at times. Sonny has a lot of Terry's performance in him but carries it with an air of competence as well and does a wonderful job expressing all of Krillin's emotions.

Yeah, I have to go with Sonny Strait ten times over for this character. He sounded comical, likable, and his voice perfectly captures his "not the toughest of the bunch but a real scrapper" qualities as well. When I first watched some clips from the Ocean Dub, Terry Klassen was the first voice that really bothered me because to me he sounded far too nasally, and I don't know, he just doesn't have enough spunk.
said at 4:44 PM on Tue Jun 11 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy Also, watch the scene this scene and compare the two, Sonny Strait's talent speaks for itself. Terry sounds like he was just phoning it in.

said at 5:46 PM on Sat Apr 5 2014
@PsychicVoiceSpy I like and respect Sonny Strait's Krillin and all. You may not agree. But I think Terry did a better job as Krillin for the first 3 movies and 53 episodes. Of course I was exposed to Sonny's Krillin first in DBZ Kai and remastered dub before I saw Ocean. I still think Sonny is pretty good. As for the comparison my only problems with Ocean was the music choice for that scene and dialogue. Not Klassen's voice acting.
said at 6:21 PM on Fri Apr 11 2014
@munsonx4 Yeah, I'm sorry, but I'm just not a fan of Klassen's Krillin in the slightest. However, I will say I think I was being a bit unfair to him, because it looks like the Ocean version of that scene was edited and shortened pretty heavily. So yeah, that might have had him at a disadvantage, but I just don't feel the same sense of urgency and raw emotion in his approach to that scene regardless.
said at 3:02 PM on Sat Apr 12 2014
@PsychicVoiceSpy Haha well truth is. I used to think Terry was awful. But the more I listened to his performances the more I began to like him as Krillin. As for Krillin sparing Vegeta in the Ocean Dub. I didn't really like that scene because of the lack of emotion in it. So I went back found a sad track from One Piece that was appropriate and played it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgmD-KxvhOA Start the song at around 2:54 or 2:55 in the beginning of this scene for the Ocean Dub. I thought it was a better fit than the actual music they used.
said at 3:48 PM on Sat Apr 12 2014
@munsonx4 Yeah, you're right, that music was a better fit. Also, the script Ocean had for this scene really sucked a lot of the dramatic tension out of the scene. If Terry Klassen had a more dramatic script for that scene and it hadn't been shortened so much, he probably would have done a lot better.

My vote is for Terry Klassen. He's got that comical 'down on his luck' performance which suits Krillin to a punch. While Krillin IS the strongest human in DBZ, he's also the underdog of the Z-fighters, the one who gets the bad luck, the one who provides the comical relief (even though most of the characters provide comic relief) and Klassen's higher pitched voice also goes well with showing Krillin's small size.
Sonny Strait I thought just sounded not terrible but too plain.

There's no contest here: Sonny Strait IS Krillin's US voice. He's the best of the bunch while (aside from the horrible Unknown Voice Actor) Terry Klassen is the weakest.

Also, I'm amused at just how much Dan Gascon sounds like Krillin's voice on DBZ:Abridged.
