I think R. Bruce sounded a bit too high-pitched and gargly in Super, although I may need to hear more.

I prefer the deeper tone he did in Kai. I still think his work there surpasss the others.

Upon recently listening to his take, Richard Newman's Ginyu sounds a lot like JK Simmons. I can't be the only one hearing the similarities, right?

@Galactic_Cyrus Fair point. Honestly, I like all of their takes, Richard, Brice, and Dale, mostly. Although Kai reintroduced me to the series, I didn't like Elliot's take that much. Although on the lighter side of things, Richard and Brice's takes reminded me of JK Simmons. I can't be the only one who hears the similarities, right?

Ok this one is hard cuz honestly I think they all did a great job.

1-Brice, he straight up sounds like he could be narrating one of those military recruitment commercials. And it shows Captain Ginyu for the charismatic military man he is
2-Richard, about the same thing I would say for Brice. Just not as smooth
3-Bruce, this is VERY different from how I'm used to Bruce sounding. And he does a great job. I like how in a way he gives Ginyu a bit more of a strain to his voice compared to the usual smoothness of Ginyu's voice. It also works with the military persona.
4-Dale, I think he sounds great! Just not how Captain Ginyu is supposed to sound.

Richard Newman, Brice Armstrong, and R. Bruce Elliot are all great, sounding like a capable military leader. Dale Kelly's has a charm to it, but it's a basic "slimy villain voice" and seems like it'd fit more for a generic grunt than one of the main antagonists of the season.

All are quite good, even Dale Kelly's performance had it's own charm to it. My favorite would be Richard Newman, simply because i'm biased towards the Saban version of DBZ. It actually would have been really interesting seeing him voice Goku and Peter Kelamis voice Ginyu during the body switch episodes.

I think Newman, Armstrong and Elliott all do a great job. It's a real tie between Richard Newman and Brice Armstrong, but I think I really enjoyed Newman's take most.

Kelly's is the worst. I'm really glad they redubbed him with Armstrong on the Orange Bricks/Blu Ray sets. I thought the idea with FUNimation's initial dub was to find who could mimic the Ocean dub actors the closest. Kelly strayed far from sounding anything like Newman's take.

IMO Brice sounds more like Richard than Dale ever did
said at 7:56 AM on Sat Apr 2 2016
@GreenGoblin75 That's because Dale was told they wanted a evil little character voice as Ginyu they didn't want Richard Newman. So Dale thought of a evil weaselly little voice as Ginyu and the directors really liked it. As for the Narrator Dale was told to try and come up with a Drag Racing/Monster Truck Announcer like voice they didn't want Doc Harris. So that's why he didn't sound like the Ocean Dub actors, Funimation told him to do something different.
said at 12:08 PM on Sat Apr 2 2016
Interesting. I actually had no idea about that. Makes sense.
said at 9:15 PM on Sat Apr 2 2016
@GreenGoblin75 That was also the only role that was notable he said he got paid for in the interview he did with my friend Balish recently. As for the Narrator they didn't pay him at all when he first started. He had to drive all the way from Dallas to Fort Worth every day to do the Narrator voice for free. Eventually they cut him a deal but even then it wasn't much.

2. Richard Newman
3. Richard Epcar
4. R. Bruce Elliott
5. Dale Kelly

Richard Newman and R. Bruce Elliot are both perfect to me. They have an awesome commanding presence and work well as military leaders.

Newman plays him more straight laced and comically serious which is really funny to see when he does his more comedic moments.

However I think I might prefer Elliot's take. He has this George C. Scott type of voice that really gets this very Drill Sargent(y) quality in his voice. I love how loud and over the top he is in the role. I can tell he was having fun voicing Ginyu.

Brice Armstrong is really good too though I find him not as great as Newman or Eliot. I preferred him as Lord Slug.

Dale Kelly was by far the worst voice Ginyu has had. He sounds like he should be announcing for monster truck shows, not voicing a military leader. FUN FACT: When LittleKuriboh auditioned for DBZA he based in Ginyu on Kelly's take.

I'll vote for R. Bruce Elliot but Richard Newman is just as great and I hope Newman is back as Ginyu for Ocean Kai.

@Autovolt "He sounds like he should be announcing for monster truck shows" That has to be the most perfect analogy for Dale Kelly's take as Ginyu.

The DBZ redub aka the "Orange Bricks" sets were pretty phoned in and slapped together, as we all know, but one of the standouts from it to me, was Brice Armstrong's take on Ginyu- now I'll admit he could've distinguished it more from his Lord Slug voice, but I personally love the Army Sergeant voice he provided, he sounded very authoritative and commanding to me, it just seemed right for some reason.

Richard Newman is my second favorite Ginyu, he had this sort of elegant, booming classic radio voice to his Ginyu, and he was pretty funny as well, with "the dance of joy" in particular.

I know it's unpopular, but R. Bruce Elliot didn't leave much of an impression on me as Ginyu, he just felt average/satisfactory in the role. He's fine, but Elliot just didn't feel outstanding to me, I've heard better from him.

The only one I dislike is Dale D. Kelly, truthfully, he just sounds too dumb and thug-like. I feel bad for him, though, he was given garbage and had to work with it (under better direction, it seems like his voice could've worked, too), plus he got a permanent boot from the dub after the Cell Saga. For what it's worth, I guess he was one of the more entertaining actors in that season's abysmal dub, if nothing else.

In my opinion Richard Newman nailed Ginyu's character down to a T, so he's first.

R Bruce Elliott is in second due to having a lot of the same qualities while adding his own flair to his performance with the southern accent imo, and Brice Armstrong is in third because while his performance is great he sounds way too much like his Lord Slug.

Dale Kelly COULD have made a good Ginyu. But as others have said he sounds way too forced and stupid. It doesn't help that they gave him some of the worst dialogue in the 1999 Funi dub either.

@Nightmare Crusher Although these days R. Bruce Elliot has gotten too wacky I think. His performance in Super lacked the nuance he had before. I actually think Richard Epcar pretty soundly out performed him for the brief time Ginyu was around in Super.

1. R Bruce Elliot. Combines the Armstrong & Newman performances into a nice blended mix.

2. Richard Newman/ Brice Armstrong. Both sound marvelous in the role. Newman sounded like he had a lot of fun with the role. And you can tell by the sound clips.

3. Dale Kelly sounds really generic & uninspired. I think he worked better as the narrator, rather than Captain Ginyu. When they weren't throwing corny & cringe-worthy lines like "POW, Right in the Kisser" & KRILLIN'S IN DA HOUSE, he worked fairly well as the narrator of the show. Anway, Dale Kelly is the weakest of all the Ginyu performances.

I like both Brice Armstrong and R Burce Elliott the most.

Although I grew up with Armstrong's portrayal, I'm leaning towards R Bruce Elliott a bit more. There's a mixture of cockiness and seriousness in his voice. He also sounds more militant which also works and fits quite well with the character. I really like this portrayal as there are quite a few effective traits.

1. Brice Armstrong - I grew up with his portrayal and it was one of the most unique sounding voices I ever heard.
2. Richard Newman - I was surprised on how baritone it sounded compared Brice, but it was one of the better performances in the Ocean dub.
3. R. Bruce Elliott - I admit when I first watched Kai, I was a bit worried about hearing Ginyu's voice change (especially since the first anime role I heard Elliott in was as Raiti in the original anime dub). I watched a few of his other roles (Hayato and Makarov) and than his Ginyu take, and I was shocked at how similar it sounded to Brice. I definitely think that it was a good choice.
4. Dale Kelly - I didn't (properly) watch the Ginyu Saga until I saw it online after the series was taken off of CN. I had no idea Ginyu had another actor between Richard and Brice (I only saw a few scenes on the Toonami intros and promos and the voice clips of Ginyu that were used combined with the music made it way too hard to tell the difference). Upon hearing him when he switched with Bulma, however, I didn't really know what to think. In my opinion, I had heard worse, but it pretty much falls flat compared to the other three.

 10 Shout Outs!
1. Richard Newman - A perfect fit for Ginyu. Suave and sophisticated, but also radiating authority, confidence and menace. You could buy he was an experienced leader amongst warriors. And when he was funny, he was hilarious! The "dance of joy!" and the scene of him bullying his men are particular standouts.
2. Brice Armstrong - Very similar to Newman's Ginyu in terms of baritone pitch and the same confidence, authority, and menace is present in this performance too. The one downside is that he kind of forces that drill sergeant growl in his voice and ends up sounding like his Lord Slug because of it. Still the best Ginyu Funimation had.
3. R. Bruce Elliot - His pitch is must lighter than the other two and his voice is scratchier. However, when he adds a Southern accent to it, it really works. He sounds a bit like George C. Scott's General Patton, fitting for a militant leader.
4. Dale Kelly - He's cocky and sometimes funny but other than that, he doesn't fit AT ALL. The pitch is too light, and the tone is that of a wrestler or a generic thug than of a captain. He also raised his voice in every other line, sounding over-the-top and obnoxious as a result. A lousy performance overall: way too typical cartoon comic relief bad guy.

I'm going with R. Bruce Elliot. To me, he sounded as distinct as the others as well as sounding the most villainous. He sounds a bit silly at times as he should, but in my opinion he also really made him sound appropriately cocky and evil too. In this clip you can tell he's really taking pleasure in the fear Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan are in and I have to say it's the most effective performance in my eyes.

I'm going against what everyone believes, and I will say Dale Kelly hands down! He makes Ginyu sound like a real captain, loud and commanding. Elliott is my second, Armstrong sounds too much like Lord Slug and isn't very commanding, and Newman is okay, though we didn't get to hear him fight.
said at 1:45 PM on Fri Aug 30 2013
@TommyBNSF Are you kidding? Kelly sounded LEAST like real captain: he just sounded like a dumb thug or a cartoony bad guy voice. Newman sounded like a sophisticated veteran officer, Armstrong sounded like a drill sergeant, and Elliot sounds like a General Patton impression. All of those suit Ginyu better than Dale Kelly's overacting performance.
