Colleen gets my vote. I always found Meredith to be a bit too monotone. It's funny because I think Meredith is way better as Launch (both forms), and she emotes better for that role than she does 18.

Meredith McCoy is my favorite 18, when funi got a bit more money and hired new actors for the androids i liked them, meredith is great as 18 though its a bummer she never got to reprise for Kai, Im pretty sure after years of experience she had as a va and better direction, she would have been given 18 a proper potrayl, It was nice of Sabat to allow her to reprise in the recent movies and Super and given the recent love 18 has been getting in that show im preety sure we can finally see that kai performance from her we never got.

though i dont dislike collen`s potrayl, the Kai dub had no bad recasts and Collen does a good job as 18, i never held her 18 in a high regard until the buu kai saga where she proved that she can easily play 18`good nature after her marriage with krillin.

the reason i slightly prefer McCoy is that her chemistry with Strait and maybe Huber was alot more beleivable they just had that spark that i couldnt find with colleen but both potrayls are good

@Abdullab Agreed, both are pretty fitting IMO. But I do think McCoy's chemistry with Sonny might be a little better.

Once again, my opinion has changed greatly. Happens very often. After hearing her again in Battle Of Gods, Resurrection F and Super, I think Meredith is much better suited to 18. Like the majority of the cast, I think she has really improved and settled back into the role very nicely.

Originally, I did like Colleen as 18 in Kai but looking back, the performance isn't as great as I remembered it to be which is disappointing. After re-watching some of 18's scenes, I noticed that the issues with her performance is that it was a bit too shrill and excessively shrieky particularly with the screaming moments. Although the scene where she is absorbed by Cell is very well acted. The main issue was the shrill nature of the voice which made the performance a bit too grating. I think there was also minor occasions where it would nearly slip into one of her other voices but I'll have to rewatch the whole thing again sometime. I'm still currently watching the Buu Saga of Kai so I'll reserve further judgement of her performance in that until I finish it entirely. I hate to say but, I don't like it as much as I did before. It's not as great as I thought it was. But I don't necessarily hate it either. I think I'm probably more indifferent to it at the moment. But I will soon give another update on what I think of her performance as a whole after I finish the Final Chapters.

I also re-watched scenes that featured 18 in GT and I have to say that Meredith did pretty well there. For all the crap that GT gets, one of the few things that it did right aside from Super Saiyan 4, Gogeta, the Shadow Dragons, the consequences of overusing the dragon balls and all was 18 getting a bit of character development and I think Meredith did pretty well particularly in the scenes where she loses Krillin, saves Goku and confronts Super 17. The emotional weight that 18 held in those scenes were very well acted and the anger portrayed in the thought of losing Krillin and the old 17 was great too. Meredith really did well there in portraying 18's emotional side and grief. That proves to me that Meredith is more layered. I have to give that praise to her because I feel like it was acted really well.

Then to have her return in both movies and Super where she's more mellow and relaxed made me realise that she's the superior voice. I wasn't sure whether the higher pitched voice or deeper toned voice was better suited for 18 so I ended up liking both at the time but I now think the deeper toned voice is much more suited to 18 because it conveys 18's toughness and hard-act, ruthless attitude but at the same time, Meredith is perfectly able to portray the snarkniness, sultry and more mellow side of the character. And when the emotional aspect is given on occasions, I felt like she was capable of doing that really well too. Plus the interactions with Krillin and Marron as well as the rest of the gang (in the Buu saga) with her voice are very warm and quite heartfelt.

With Colleen's 18, it's more high pitched and casual (light) sounding which is arguably alright for some aspects such as 18's fashion interest, shopping etc but it's nowhere near as balanced as Meredith's 18. It lacks the weight and strength of the character which is kept with Meredith's voice. It may also comes across as a bit too whiny on some occasions. As much as I love Colleen as an actress, 18 as a character has much more composure and coolness with her deeper toned voice as well as being more distinct which is why I'm changing my vote to Meredith.

Some time has passed. Might as well update my thoughts on this voice compare. It's not gonna be in any particular order, I'll just go through the actresses individually.

Colleen Clinkenbeard is still my favorite performance here. Mostly based off her Kai performance That is where she truly shines as 18. It does slip into her Zangya sometimes but I can look past that. She nails 18's traits much better than her predecessors.

I have to give Sharon Mann credit, she actually sounds really good as 18. One of the better performances in the ABGroupe dub of History of Trunks.

Jennifer Bain & Enuka Okama do suffer from stilted acting at times, but I find their voices a lot more tolerable.

Meredith McCoy I was never really that fond of all things considered. The way she delivers her lines are so robotic & flat, you almost forget that she's also human. I know she's part cyborg, but that doesn't mean every line read should sound so bland & artificial. She's not even convincing when she's tries to portray her human side. Her performance is very overrated and in contrast to her peers Chuck Huber & Jeremy Inman, she has the weakest performance out of the 3 of them.

Her more recent work as 18 still hasn't impressed me & she sounds like she's phoning it in all the time.

As for Tamara Ryan, even though she hasn't been added to the poll, she sounds very similar to Clinkenbeard. She sounds pretty good as 18.

@Shaun Ince I agree with everything you said, Colleen now in Buu Saga has become much more perfect as 18.

I'd go with Colleen Clinkenbeard for the Android 18 that's present in the Cell Saga since the character is younger there and the voice works best for that (it sounded a bit femme fatale at times, that being said), but from the Buu Saga onwards (especially in Super), I feel like Meredith McCoy is a better fit- the older voice works once time has passed in the Series.

Overall, I think Meredith actually had the stronger performance here, a standout from the old FUNi dub of Z & I'm glad she got to reprise the role for Battle of Gods as well as Super since the character has aged a little by that point.

Colleen Clinkenbeard still did a good job in Kai, though, nothing bad about it at all- it fits well enough, the casting makes sense.

Enuka Okama is alright, but a little bland and too gentle sounding at times.

Considering how infamous terribly acted the AB Groupe dub is, Sharon Mann's Android 18 is possibly the best performance from it- that laugh is grating, though.

Jennifer Bain's delivery is so incredibly monotone and flat- just like she's reading lines off the script page: I mean, it's an upgrade over her take on Frieza, but that's not saying much to me.

Just speaking personally, Meredith has always sounded too old to me for what the character actually looks like. Even back when I was a kid watching it she always sounded off to me. That's why I ended up liking Colleen more in Kai, her voice actually sounded closer to what I thought should be coming out of her.

@GothamRed According to McCoy's date of birth listed on this site, she was only 20 years old when she started voicing 18.
said at 11:19 PM on Sun Dec 18 2016
@WittyUsername her actual age is irrelevant to my point. The voice she used for 18 sounded too old for the character, it is still possible for that to be the case even if the actor is young.
said at 12:33 PM on Mon Dec 19 2016
@GothamRed My point is that not everyone sounds the same just because of their age. The fact that Meredith McCoy was so young when she started voicing the character goes to show that it's not necessarily unusual for a young person to have that kind of voice.

Besides, have we ever gotten any official confirmation on exactly how old 17 and 18 were prior to becoming cyborgs? They could've been college age kids for all we know.
said at 1:40 PM on Mon Dec 19 2016
I think GothamRed is saying that Meredith's deep voice doesn't go well with the voice he'd imagine coming out of that design (I also agree).

Coleen and Meredith are my favorites

People said Coleen sounded too cute and Girly as 18,but if you think about she does have a girly side,18 likes to shop and she was trying Chi Chi s clothes on and looking at herself in the mirror. I think Android 18 is someone that is cute and deadly,Coleen captures that perfectly.

Meredith portrays 18 as more of a tough and Bad girl and does sound cute like Coleen, but I still liked her take. I am glad she returned for the movies

Enuka is good for something close to Meredith s take, but she was working under bad direction

Sharon and Jennifer were phoning everything in

out of these, I think Meredith McCoy provided the best performance. she sounded tough and gave the character a distinct attitude and was very memorable, in a good way. though honestly the voice actress for her in Dragon Ball Z Abridged suits her a LOT better and i would certainly vote for her, if she were an option.

as for the others:

Enuka Okuma did an alright job, it's fairly similar to McCoy's performance. there isn't really a whole lot to really note about it, it's just fine. she might benefit from a better clip though.

Sharon Mann sounds like a character out of Jem or something lol she also sounds kinda.... idk shallow and airheaded, which i don't think are words i would associate with 18. at the very least her 18 *does* have some personality, and is ok. she is acceptable. she'd sure be perfect if dragon ball z was a cheesy 80s cartoon like Jem though lol

Jennifer Bain didn't even... act.... lol she sounds like an emotionless robot. i get that 18 is a cyborg but jeez.... this might just be a bad clip though, and if i'm not mistaken 18 herself was under some kind of Hypnosis Thingie. the voice itself is alright, i actually prefer the way her voice sounds over clinkenbeard's. she should be given a better clip as an example though, because i'm not sure if her acting is generally stiff and wooden or if this was intentional.

and I really don't like Colleen Clinkenbeard's performance as 18 very much. she sounds much too..... idk how to put it. she doesn't give 18 very much of an attitude and she usually sounds rather bland and meh. the clip given is very bad so i'm going off of clips from Kai. she also doesn't sound tough enough. not that 18 should sound Super Extremely Tough but she should have an edge to her, which clinkenbeard didn't really portray. in fact her 18 didn't really have much of an attitude, or really.... anything to her. and the voice was too light and at times sounded really nasally and a little bit annoying ???

overall ranking would be:
1. Meredith McCoy
2. Enuka Okuma
3. Sharon Mann
4. Jennifer Bain (for her voice; if her acting is normally very stiff and robotic, then she would be on the bottom)
5. Colleen Clinkenbeard

I could go either way between Colleen, Jennifer and Enuka's voices for this one. I find them all equally fitting.

I can't really get behind Meredith McCoy because I think her "tough" voice is unfitting for the character. I think it works better when Android 18 is played to be gentle and meek because firstly, it fits her cute appearance better but, aside from that, giving her a gentle voice also deceives the audience into thinking she IS a sweet teenage girl. When we see what she's actually capable of it makes it all the more frightening because it plays against audience expectations and stereotypes.

By giving 18 a tough voice you're defeating the purpose of making her a cute teenage girl in the first place.

I will say though, Colleen, Jennifer and Enuka's voice clips are all bad examples of their work. I feel as though there are far better clips that could've been used to represent them than these.

This is a difficult one, because personally I don't think anyone here 100% nailed 18. I feel the ideal voice for 18 should be tough, yet not too tough and angry that she wouldn't sound like a good mother.

I know it's unpopular to prefer any of the abridged voices over any of the official voices but I genuinely like Amber Lee Connors voice and performance the most as 18.

Of the people here I think Meredith McCoy played her best. I think she's a bit too angry sounding but I still feel she's the most well rounded here.

Enuka Okuma is pretty close to Meredith too.

Colleen Clinkenbeard and Sharon Mann's voices are a bit closer to what I'd like for 18 but I feel their performances weren't as strong. Colleen is the better of the two voices but she felt like a lazy and uninspired choice. She still did well I suppose.

Jennifer Bain is the worst, she sounds too stiff and robotic....even for an android.

I apologize for prefer the abridged voice for 18 most but I will vote for Meredith, does that sound fair?
said at 9:16 AM on Fri Nov 6 2015
I liked Meredith most, personally, I actually thought her take was really unique and distinct, making 18 come off as less shallow and ditzy than the others.

The rest aren't bad, though, at least: if anyone comes off as robotic to me here, it's Bain's take.

I think the main problem with her performance back then it came across as too flat. She did improve in Battle of Gods.

Meredith McCoy FTW. She Captured 18's Personality perfectly, a Woman that is not to be messed with.

Enuka Okuma: Had a somewhat nice voice, though it was a bit too low toned.

Colleen Clinkenbeard: She was miscast as 18, so I barely even like her performance. Her tone was too light, and she overdid the screaming to unbearable levels. Not suitable enough for 18, IMO.

Jennifer Bain and the UVA: Decent, but they just don't cut it.

1. Meredith McCoy - A pitch perfect fit for a tough gal like 18. Very beautiful, sultry, and ruthless sounding. An incredibly strong performance.
2. Enuka Okuma - Almost identical to Meredith, except a bit softer and emphasizing the robotic quality of the android.
3. UVA - Sounds great for a teenage delinquent, but sounds a bit forced when she raises her voice and she doesn't do quite as good on the level-headedness as the above two.
4. Colleen Clinkenbeard - The worst dub recast. She sounds like a high voiced femme fatale and that's it. It doesn't have the same weight and character as Meredith's or even the other three.
5. Jennifer Bain - Has the right pitch, but seems to take "brainwashed" 18 as an opportunity to sound completely lifeless and flat. Not a good sign.

On a side note, the unknown sounds like Wendee Lee to me and, seeing as she had done some previous dubbing work for the series, I think it's possible it was her.

@Red524 There's basically no chance of the unknown being Wendee Lee. I can't remember the exact country that dub was made in, but it wasn't America.

@Nightmare Crusher Yeah, I was looking at the Funimation dub and saw Dameon Clarke as Gohan alongside all the reprised roles and thought maybe they were trying something interesting and different. I failed to notice the unknown was from a different dub and Meredith was already credited.

I really like Meredith in the role, but watching her performance now, she sounded a bit TOO pissed off. She didn't sound nearly that dominant or angry in the Japanese version and Colleen's take seems to reflect that more. Overall, both are good, but since Meredith is more distinct and improved her acting over time, I'm going with her.

Meredith- To me, she does the perfect "no-nonsense" voice for 18. I always picture the voice for someone who isn't afraid to hurt you without second thought.

Jennifer- Rosammy! Whoops, wrong anime series. Just from that clip alone, she sounds a bit robotic, but not too far off Meredith's voice.

Colleen- No doubt different. The youngest-sounding of them all. Not too bad at following 18's character. Her performance on the show is much better than in the games though.

I like Colleen's voice from Kai the best, but I have to admit that she sounds atrocious in the games she's been in.

No disrespect to Ms. Clinkenbeard (she's a great Erza) but I vastly, vastly prefer Meredith McCoy. I have little interest in Kai so I've stayed out of the Z vs. Kai topics but this is one I wanted to say a bit on.

I just watched the videos of Trunks going back to his future and killing Future Android 17 and 18. (yes I know they're cyborgs) Ms. Clinkenbeard just didn't do it for me at all. Her voice is just too light and doesn't have the sense of power or dominance that 18 should possess.

People say Ms. McCoy sounded too robotic but that was only at first. She definitely sounded very inhuman against Vegeta but remember that the two cyborgs were the villains at this point. They were supposed to radiate an ominous and chilling air. Once the charade of them being like the evil androids of Trunks' future is doen away with however, she sounds quite human. She may be laid back and casual but still very warm and caring, as you can hear during her interactions with Krillin or their daughter.

Speaking of the scene where Trunks wipes out his androids, McCoy was fantastic there too. She can be deadpan ("look, he noticed. How cute") or fiery ("I HATE YOU!!") and both are very convincing and make me love the character of Eighteen.

It goes without saying that you don't mess with a girl that authentically sounds like she can (and just might) bust your head open.

McCoy IS 18; accept no substitutes. If you don't believe me, then just look up some of her YouTube uploads from back in the day.

If you ask me, I think there all good: (except for Jennifer, she sound too gentle for Andriod 18.)

I guess my pick would be Meredith because that's what I'm used to, but props to everyone else too. :)

@Torak Jennifer is perfect for 18 when she did that voice. Think about it, in GT, she has settled down significantly and is a more gentle person in normal conversation.
said at 7:07 AM on Sun Aug 26 2012
@Super Sapphire Umm, I mean no disrespect to you, but Android 18 is NOT meant to sound gentle.

I'm sure Jennifer is a more gentle person in reality, but her voice did not fit a character that is supposed to be a powerful fighter that originally, killed many people. (DBZ: The history of Trunks.) That's just my opinion, take it or leave it.
said at 4:15 PM on Fri Nov 9 2012
@Torak To be fair this clip of her isn't the best choice since she's mind controlled. We don't know how she actually sounds.

@pete Huh, how do you know? Did you watch the episode or something? :/

@Torak Yeah but it was Funimation's version and you can tell by the clip because of how she talks.

Meredith McCoy is and always will be Android 18. Colleen did an ok job but I think I could see Spider Woman (Jessica Drew) with that voice more than 18. The others were meh to me.

I'm surprised at all the positive reception for the Unknown Actress! Usually the voice actors from the "Big Green" dubs get horrible reception, and are almost treated as a joke! But I guess I agree that the AB Groupe dub of "Gohan and Trunks" was "better" (not saying much) than the movies. But there were definitely some laughable moments (such as the scene where 18 says "We're taking a ride on a Merry-Go-Round!" in a childlike voice as she and 17 are getting on), and Bulma's "Big Green" voice was laughable as always and her dramatic scenes were slaughtered. Other than that, it was "less laughable" than the other movies (I still have no idea why AB insisted on having like... NO BUDGET to dub these movies).

1. Meredith - She's just perfect for the role
2. Colleen - She doesn't do a bad job imitating Meredith's voice.
3. The actress doing the voice in that dub of "The History of Trunks"
4/5. Enuka/Jennifer - Both sound too soft for the role.

Collean sounds better in the show then the games. In the games she sounds like a big flirt while in the show she sounds better. My vote still goes to McCoy but to be fair no one in this Voice Compare did a bad job

@ holly

Meredith is much more relaxed and seductive in the video games so if she reprises the role I think you'd approve.

As for Chuck I'm sure he'll reprise 17. He made a recover a short while back so all is good. ;)

The scripts for all the BZ Kai episodes have been very accurate to the Japanese episodes (Goku even said his last name in one episode). :)

Don't you mean Stephanie Young?

Anyways it is Colleen.

Stephanie Young confirmed it's not her.

Stephanie Nadolny didn't voice Gohan so why 18?

Colleen is confirmed for Raging Blast 2 and since Tenkaichi Tag Team only came out shortly before she voiced 18 for that game too.

Apparently Colleen Clinkenbeard also voiced 18 in the video game Dragon Ball Z:Shin Budokai. Might have to start looking for a clip.

I liked all 3 of these performances about the same and I was pleasantly surprised by Jennifer Bain's work. (Though yeah that clip wasn't really good but it was the only one I could do that wouldn't have any potential spoilers.)
